The food was great! Nice size portions enough for you to take home. Friendly service and a very clean dining area. I highly recommend the salt and pepper Cod!

Google
Have not been in here for a very long time. I think it was with the ex-wife. Anyway, we ordered a white dinner with just chicken chow mein and egg foo young with rice. The chowing was nice, kind of the usual chow mein that everybody else makes, the egg foo young was slightly disappointing because it was, it seemed less egg and more batter. I will come back because there are other dishes to try and I'm curious about their shrimp dumplings

Great place to have a good time with family and friends, the food is delicious and fresh.

It is so sad I have been eating here 30 yrs. Now snd never had any problems with the good. I order the pork chops with ginger over rice. I took it home and notice the chops were not cooked all the way . They were still pink inside and had a bad tangy taste! I immediately call them back the young man at front counter said he had ti check with the book ti see what to do since I had took the item home. The young man said the book advised me to bring the food back . I had only bitten off a piece of chop. I was upset that that the small statue. Petite women that sits next to the kitchen began fussing in her language then in English said she no want food! I yelled back which I should have done and told her I have been coming here with my family for 20 yrs. And never received bad food before. Please Becareful going here check your food and I guess it is different owner now. The elderly nice waitress Corina is no longer there. It has been a changing of the guard.

Google
LyLuck is now under new ownership. Dine in is available again and they are open 7 days a week now. The food still tastes great like before. There has been a change of menu items, so check the menu carefully. I have provided the new menu in my photos. My takeout order today was my usual order in the past which is still on their new menu. Glad to have their dining area open again. Good luck to the new owners.

Google
I ordered a leafy greens dish and the first bite was loaded with grit. I threw the order out! Greens must be thoroughly washed! I’ve cooked enough greens in my life to know that these were not washed at all. I’m pretty sure that LyLuck is under new ownership.

Google
Wonderful food and service. Got the Beef Won Ton soup, General Chicken, and Mongolian Chicken. Highly recommend

Google
The food tastes sooo poorly now that it’s under new management, it’s honestly sad. I grew up eating food here and the only reason why I won’t give it lower than 2 stars is respect for the old owners, I hope that retirement treats them well. This sesame chicken pisses me off smh, and they have the audacity to raise the price and lower the quality of food, Super backwards.

Yelp
3537 Fruitvale Ave Oakland, CA 94602 I was in the area, and dropped by for some takeout. I ordered Black Bean Pepper Beef and Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice. Salted what? Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice. If you like it, you love it, and will want to order it. I like the way Ly Luck makes it, and they give a big generous serving. Black Bean Pepper Beef is bite sized pieces of beef with a balance of peppers and onions in black bean sauce. Very well seasoned, big serving. Good amount of gravy to go with my rice. Eat it Chinese style and enjoy a nice meal from Ly Luck.

Yelp
Revisted Ly Luck for the 1st time in over 4 yrs after Covid started & when they only served take out & then changed ownership It was never a great restaurant to begin with but they had fresh fish tsnks & served while steamed fish which was fine until now The fish I got this time around was undercooked (the bone didnt lift free from the flesh of the fish) sent it back & it still wasnt fully cooked when reserved on top of that, they served us old (no freshly steamed) rice I didnt bother complaining because even if they cooked some, it would have take a 1)2 but that's how long it takes to steam a fis & they should have started a new pot of rice when the steamed fish order came in but thry didnt. I'm never going back .

Yelp
NEW MANAGEMENT, NEW CHEF, NEW MENU Sometime last year, the restaurant went under new management. You no longer see the same ladies that would manage the front of the restaurant. The menu has also sightly changed. While the offerings looks similar, it's different. My mom was craving a dish that we would always order. XO Beef Clay Pot. It was a dish that seemed to be slowly cooked with fatty and tendon style of beef with napa cabbage and ginger. We ordered something similar on the menu, Beef Stew Clay Pot with Bean Curd. The meat was not that tender, and there were pieces in there that were too hard to bite easily through. My thoughts are, if you're going to take over a restaurant, you should be familiar with the previous menu and dishes and try to make it the same. If not, you might as well call the restaurant something else. The Egg Plant with Garlic Sauce was really good, I would order it again. The rice was a little hard... The gentleman server was not very attentive. I would always find his back to me when I was looking for him (either for water, boxes, the bill). As a server, I feel like your attention should be the interior of the restaurant and the front door. At the time we were the only ones in the restaurant. I am certain, at one point he went outside the front door to smoke a cigarette, and the front door was open so the smell wafted in. The prices are expensive. We paid $47 (with a $5 tip) for 2 dishes and steam rice. I don't know that I would ever go to this restaurant again, unless I were given some kind of coupon. Before I could rely on dishes that were to my liking. Now, I don't want to take the risk of being disappointed, especially with how expensive food is these days. My overall first experience back was lacking. I may delete my previous reviews as they are no longer relevant to this establishment.

Yelp
Yowza! They know how to give you a portion here. I paid $15 dollars for my beef chow mein and had dinner for three nights. Amazing bang for your buck at this restaurant. Food was just alright though, nothing to write home about so I'll most likely get something else from the menu if I order from here again to see if all the food on the menu is like this...

Yelp
Under new ownership. Still delicious! Finally open on the inside again! - Dry braised green beans - Beef chow fun with gravy - Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings - beef stewed

Yelp
The food is good and fresh. I love their black bean sauce over rice with ribs. Their chicken and salty fish rice is the best. So much good flavor

Yelp
Ly Luck has been our go to restaurant since1990. New ownership for several months now. We figured they have worked out the kinks now. I should have clued in that at 11:30 I was parked outside for 10 minutes waiting for the take out to be ready. Only 3 people went to pick up food. Usually there are a substantial amount of people! As I walked inside there were absolutely not one diner. The dishes looked delicious. We ordered 4 dishes. So so disappointed. Three of the dishes clay pot beef stew, clay pot fish with tofu and chicken chow mein tasted the same! Bland and lacking any flavor what so ever! Ordered fried chitterlings...ummm cold, limp and almost soggy!! The lack of vegetables in the dishes was because they were old chewy and bitter. If it is that bad, I sincerely wonder what care they give to the cleanliness of their kitchen. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Our go too for Chinese food !! Great price and value and so friendly ' we usually ordered 7-8 items and eat it family style . They are always consistent

Kasi J.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer for about 5 years, I typically order the wonton soup. Today I decided to try something different and ordered the salt and pepper wings. When I got home to eat my dinner that was good approximately $22 the chicken was not cooked all the way through. I called to let them know and the lady just said "ok" didn't offer to refund me or didn't offer to make anything else. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
Bang for buck! Good food done fast for a great price. My go to local spot for dinner when I'm lazy to cook and craving Chinese food. Where else can you pick 3 freshly made entrees from 69 options, all for less than $30?

Yelp
I love this place. It's been here forever. As a kid, I remember my mom and my grandma taking me here for dinner or getting me sizzling rice soup when I wasn't feeling well. As an adult, I stopped coming because... life, but I have recently gone back, and I was so happy that the food tasted as good as I remembered it. I even tried their crispy duck (as a kid, I didn't have the pallette), and it was AMAZING!

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. Their food are delicious and come in huge portions. Since their prices are so very reasonable, you get the best value for your money in all of Oakland (maybe even in the East Bay!) The owners and the staff are super friendly. Parking is very easy. That is why even people from far away come here.

Yelp
My friend and I are looking for a restaurant nearby for lunch. I ate this restaurant a long time ago. I read the reviews. They changed the new owner. I see some old customers write the comments, but I still think I want to try it, because everything in the Bay Area are very expensive now, and their prices are acceptable to me. I think I still like their taste, especially their seafood eggplant pot. Maybe everyone's taste is different. I will recommend my friend to come. Their waiter is very good.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
No frills, delicious authentic Chinese food. They are still take out only but the food is wonderful.

Doris C.

Yelp
I tried it again More disappointed I waited for quite a while to be seated Only a few customers! I was seated & thrown a menu I was trying to ask if they had sizzling rice soup which wasn't on the menu She never stopped running To the phone After awhile I decided to leave I didn't want to hold a table if they didn't serve it Someone saw me getting up & asked what did I want to order He told me they had it but it just wasn't on the menu I decided to stay The hostess never returned for water or tea The gentleman brought out the soup She was running to the phone Totally unresponsive to seated & tipping customers The soup was horrible It tasted like fish & grease A few grains of rice & a cut up snow pea Very fishy Nawww I have never had anything like it I am polite & a generous tipper but the food wasn't good Service bad & unappreciated No more I hate writing this but everything is so expensive & taste & service are very important Fishy soup?? No more

Yelp
We've been loyal customers for decades but after the business change hands, it's not worth going to at all. Sad to say goodbye to the old Ly Luck... end of an era...
google avatar

Yelp
New owners same great taste. Very thankful to have this option without the feeling of a whole new ownership.

Yelp
The lobby is CLOSED to patrons so you'll have to get the food to go. There was a bunch of ppl sitting however congregating on the opposite side . The food was pricy for what we ordered. 2 soups 2 main courses. About $60 -Do Yourself a favor and Avoid the soup. I never imagined anyone could ruin soup for this, they win top prize. Both won ton and Hot & Sour soups horrible. -The other items were okay at best. I would return for many other items just exclude the soup ...

Yelp
My favorite restaurant for years! Food is so flavorful! The staff is very accommodating for special requests. I take home large amounts and freeze to eat during the week. Many others have discovered this wonderful place and I am planning a trip into Oakland soon to stock up again.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in town. Guess they never recovered from Covid. They are takeout only now!

Yelp
We had an unexpected bunch of us that were free on thanksgiving day, and Ly Luck welcomed us with super friendly service on a short notice and hot delicious dinner! The new owners are so nice - we ordered a bunch of dishes, the standouts were the soup (not sure what kind but yummy!), mushu chicken, pork chops, and the Chinese cauliflower dish. We will be back

Yelp
*****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Ly Luck is open for takeout during the COVID-19 public health emergency. To support small businesses during these challenging times, I ordered some takeout here on 04/05/2020. I placed my 6-dish order when I left the house and it was ready when I arrived 20 minutes later. Everything was neatly packed and placed in a small cardboard box. The total was just $52.50. The lady who handled my order had a mask and gloves on. Social distancing reminder was posted near the cash register. Here's a quick breakdown on the food I got: Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - It was decent. The pork chops were crispy and meaty. It could have used a bit more seasoning and aromatics. Ginger and Scallion Chicken - Solid. The chicken was tender. It was topped with a good amount of ginger and scallions. Soy sauce provided the seasoning. Ginger and Green Onion Beef - Pretty good. It was more like green and white onion beef. I didn't taste much ginger in the dish. Instead, it was made with lots of green and white onions. Beef was tender. Ly Luck Beef Stew - Superb! The beef was braised to tender perfection. Portion was huge! Dry Fried String Beans - The beans were fresh and cooked just right. The ground pork topping added a savory dimension to the dish. Fish Fillet with Chinese Greens - Decent but saucy. I had to pour out some of the sauce. Fish fillet and greens were seasoned well. Overall, solid Chinese food. Please go support them! BONUS MATERIAL: - Major credit cards accepted.

Yelp
Adding another Star - I want to support this great local restaurant who has been struggling like many others during covid.

Yelp
First time trying this place and I gotta say the chowmein was very fresh and salty and tasty. I will definitely try other items again

Fan Z.

Yelp
Great food and service! Will order crispy shrimp again. prices make sense, compared to the food quality.

Yelp
Just heard Ly Luck will be closing permanently. Last day will be 10/30/23. So sad, no where to get Duck Yee Foo WonTon anymore. Thanks for the many years for great food. Another business falls victim to the deplorable conditions in Oakland!
google avatar

Shirleen A.

Yelp
A little old and dated in decor. SeTing is crowded and noisy. Food was the run of the mill Chinese. Had Walnut Prawns, Peking Ribs and some Pea Sprouts. All were edible.
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Ly Luck has the best dry fried beef chow fun anywhere. This restaurant is especially good in that their chow fun tastes excellent AND it is also significantly less greasy than at other restaurants. The only drawback is they run out of chow fun fairly often.
google avatar

Alexa W.

Yelp
I haven't tried many of their dishes yet, but so far, everything was great. What stands out for me hands down are the won ton soups. Thick, flavorful broth, a healthy helping of bok choy and a generous amount of hand-made dumplings. If you order it with protein, they cook the beef (or whatever you chose) in gravy and dump the whole thing on top of the soup. This threw me off a bit at first, but it's delicious! The staff can be a bit grumpy, but for this food and those prices, I don't mind a bit! The decor (and especially the carpet) needs a serious overhaul though...

Rebecca D.

Yelp
I'm sorry to say the Ly-Luck I've loved for years is gone. My favorite dish was tofu in ma po sauce, which usually has ground pork and, blessedly in the old place, no peas or carrots. Now it's a complete switch -- and no ma po sauce! It was just a nasty glutinous glop with no taste. Sorry the old guard's gone.

Yelp
This is an authentic, delicious, and affordable Chinese restaurant. They have a menu you can choose from in the "3 dishes for $25" category you can order from for both lunch and dinner. I order take out every time I come home and visit. My favorite is the steamed queen clams over vermicelli noodles. The queen clams have a great texture and is cooked basically with hot oil, soy sauce, garlic, and green onions. My mom's favorite is the sautéed beef with veggies over rice. The beef is tender and they give ample veggies to go with the meat. In general, any dish you order from here will be really good and a sufficient portion size. Service is quick. The owner is really nice and gives us free soup whenever we dine in. Place is clean and there is never really a wait. Definitely recommend checking out if you are in the area!
google avatar

Vanni C.

Yelp
I ordered via phone and the staff taking my order was extremely polite tand helped place my order. He knowledgable about the menu and provided an estimated wait time of 15-20 minutes and was spot on!! Their 3 for 22.50 (25.60 after tax) menus ousd a good deal I think it's about 8.5 an item the food was good I bbn ordered the chicken wings in garlic sauce chinese broccoli and chicken chow mein. The Chinese broccoli was a little weird it was mostly stock and not much foliage. The chow mein was not greasy at all it actually was light on flavor but still good. It was even better with hot sauce . And the wings were perfect

Yelp
Been going here for years...my nibling love this place!! Even made him wear a tie to this place cuz we went so often!!

Jane S.

Yelp
We found out a few weeks ago that this is under new ownership when we went to pick up take out and they were open for dine in. We've been back for dine in 3 times now. Prices are higher which is understandable given that it's higher at most of our regular places too. And the size of each dish is much larger now. Everything we've had so far is tasty. Service is attentive and food delivered quickly, I think because most don't know they are open for dine in. There have only been 1-2 tables when we were there and they seem to still have a number of people coming in for take out.

V W.

Yelp
Ly Luck use to be our go to place for Chinese food, especially chow fun and the 3 dishes special. We found out, it's under new management, prices have all increased significantly, no more 3 dish special, and there are new cooks. No wonder everything was tasteless. Will not come back & will look for another go to place.

Susan L.

Yelp
We had dinner here on New Year's Day. Service was okay and the dishes were lacking. We ordered half of duck and it was the worst duck with no meat I had ever had! The rest of the dishes were okay. We probably will not be back, too bad because it used to be one of our go to Chinese restaurant.

Robin K.

Yelp
Beef chow fun had 6 pieces of beef. Noodles are odd and short. Overall flavor ok. nice people, no one on the restaurant though, even though now seating customers
google avatar

Rustin L.

Yelp
Been going to Ly Luck for decades. I wouldn't say it's THE best Chinese restaurant, but the wide selection of items including some that are hard to find on other menus, and consist quality makes Ly. Luck a reliable go to wherever you're in the mood for Chinese. Fried wonton soup, pea sprouts, dry fried green beans, are some of the favorites (sorry i didn't take pics). They are consistently busy even during the pandemic, and very quick to churn out to go orders. Happy to support this local business.

Delwin N.

Yelp
I love this place. The last day, at least with the current ownership, was last night 11/16/23. There is a new owner now. Not sure if it will stay Ly Luck or be a different restaurant but Ly Luck was special.

Blue S.

Yelp
Hadn't eaten here in a very long time. Food used to be excellent. Ordered online for pickup: one Mongolian Beef & one Garlic Bok Choy. Our order was ready on time for pick up. Although everything was fresh, it was completely lacking in flavor and didn't taste AT ALL Chinese. The beef was high quality and tender, but dull, tasteless and veggies were soggy and limp. Bok choy's stems were so tough we couldn't chew them and had ZERO hint of the garlic as advertised. Very disappointing because this used to be my favorite dish. I ended up doing a complete make-over of both dishes at home. Added garlic, ginger, soy, etc., to Bok choy, and cut stems off and simmered them separately to tenderize. To make a long story short, for all the work I had to put into RE-making the food, I should've just made it from scratch myself. I cook FAR better Chinese food than this at home, and I'm not even Chinese! Besides being DULL, it is not good value for the price. We didn't even get rice. Certainly not what Ly Luck it used to be. We won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
i purchased some shrimp fried rice yesterday. today i check on it and it already spoiled. terrible quality. don't buy from here.

Daphne Mae T.

Yelp
A neighbor posted that the business was struggling. I immediately sent my husband to Ly Luck Restaurant to order their duck and bean cake lunch special to support their business. It was more tofu than duck, and the cashier was very rude and dismissive to my poor husband who had such fond memories of that place from childhood. She acted like he wasn't going to pay BEFORE he could even order. We will not be returning. There's a reason why they're business has slowed.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Ly Luck is a Cantonese Chinese Restaurant in the Dimond District of Oakland. It's been there for a while. They have a pretty good and pretty affordable menu of Cantonese Chinese dishes. They have a special menu of 3 items for $26. I love that they list specials on the wall in both English and Chinese. Their dishes are pretty authentic, and they don't break the bank. Try Ly Luck.
google avatar

Pedro S.

Yelp
This is my go to place for Chinese. I highly recommend it. My favorite items i like to order is the wonton soup, green beans, fried rice, walnut shrimp, and eggrolls. Currently there's no dining in and parking is easy accessible.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
A night off from cooking we decided to dine in the restaurant and on a Friday night, they were busy! We ordered several entrees so that we wouldn't have to cook over the weekend. We started with Westlake beef soup, Hung Tao Yee Won Ton, beef and broccoli, steamed pork cake with salted fish (yummy), steamed spareribs with black bean sauce, chicken with ginger and green onion, combination clay pot, The portions were hearty and food delicious. My favorite was the steamed pork cake so light and fluffy and the steamed spareribs! The only con was that we were sitting near the air conditioning vent on the ceiling and it was a cold night and it was going full blast, brrr.
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
Amazing food for a great deal. I can always count on generous portions. My favorite part about their food is that it's authentic but not too oily. My favorites are the shrimp and egg chow fun and the beef stew pot. The wings are delicious as well! Give them a try. I wish they were on Door Dash though.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in east Oakland, hands down. They will basically make you anything even if it's not on the menu.

Richard B.

Yelp
Very good quality food here, and efficient service. A wide variety of items on the menu. Nice neighborhood place for lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Huong V.

Yelp
Solid restaurant and home style Chinese cooking. My family and I love Ly luck, especially for their "Lai tong" aka house soup; it's made with pork bones and some other veggies and ingredients that you can tell have been slow simmered for hours. Sadly, they are no longer serving it during Covid. That's fine, we just gotta keep ordering and keep them afloat until this pandemic is over with. Our usual favs are: pan fried noodle, beef chow fun, Peking ribs (less sauce), fried cod with corn sauce, salted fish pork patty, seafood and tofu clay pot. The fried rice is a bit too dry for my taste.
