A Portland Matcha Pop-Up Was Threatened With a Lawsuit Over Tea | Eater Portland

"Set in a second-level storefront along NW 23rd’s posh shopping district, this shop—led by founder and CEO Mari Wada—tried to curb local resales of Marukyu Koyamaen matcha by mailing cease-and-desist letters that initially claimed exclusive U.S. distribution rights, a stance later retracted in favor of describing the business as a brand partner focused on proper representation and appropriate distribution. Citing the maker’s policy discouraging resale and a list of unauthorized distributors, Wada has argued for tighter controls, while acknowledging the letters’ tone “may have been a little too strong” and indicating plans to let the Japanese brand handle future enforcement." - Ben Coleman

Had a wonderful experience here. Zia was very friendly and we shared a lot of tea knowledge and talked about Matcha. Very impressive Matcha selections as well - will come back!

Sweet little place. Lots of tea pots and a small selection of teas. Very clean store. If you're looking for Japanese or Japanese inspired gifts, this place is neat.

This gem in NW Portland has beautiful items from Japan. I went there for a “Nihoncha 101” Japanese tea demonstration and learned so much about various teas, their brewing process, and the history. I’ll definitely return for future events and shopping!

We had a matcha tasting here, and we had a really good time! The session was a great intro to matcha for someone who’s fairly inexperienced in matcha. The staff are clearly very passionate about matcha and very lively and kind. The store is also full of products from Japan, and it’s clear that they take great care into curating a beautiful and cozy vibe. I would love to visit again!! P.S. they are also one of the three official distributors of Marukyu Koyamaen!! So please come here for all your matcha needs! Also, their matcha ice cream was sooo good and has a good taste of matcha, so I can’t wait to buy some!

Loved the intimate matcha tasting event that started to be held here. Each session is 30 mins long with 4 ppl at most. After the event, we browsed the cute gift shop merchandise. This shop is also one of the few official NA distributor of Marukyu Koyamaen. The staff are very nice and can speak Japanese too. Parking is difficult here.

We came here to try the mocha tea, and it was good and refreshing. The service was great! The mochi dessert was very soft and delicious. The shop is cute and offers a variety of items to buy. We especially liked the Yuzu hand cream with its fresh citrus scent.

Went to a matcha tasting with some friends! We were able to try the Kinrin and Tenju Marukyu Koyamaen matcha. We were also served some hojicha and a sweet to try. They offered a choice between two different matches and then made it for you. The ladies working there that day were very nice and answered all our questions about matcha. They also sell lots of other Japanese items so be sure to stop by!

Fun and fanciful stocking designs in the window display caught our eyes. Walked in the for the stockings but fell in love with the ceramic bowls for soup and noodles and tea. Just visiting this time but loved knowing where to come for beautiful things in Portland.
