Lygon Arms | Best places to stay in the Cotswolds

"Something of a Cotswolds institution, the Lygon has been welcoming guests since the 14th century, and has played a part in some of the pivotal moments in British history, including acting as a base for King Charles I and his supporters to assemble before battle. The 21st-century Lygon combines its long past with plenty of contemporary comforts – handmade mattresses and quality toiletries in the rooms, a luxury spa with a gym and pool, cocktails by the fire and upscale dining in the opulent Lygon Bar and Grill. Décor is dark and moody – great for cosy winter stays, but less appealing when the sun is out. It’s beloved of American tourists and those searching for something a little more old-school than the Cotswold’s new breed of boutique hotels – traditionalists will find much to love. The most beautiful hotel. Great courtyard and gardens. We went on a Sunday and it was a nice day so we sat in the courtyard and had lunch although we love it here the food is very overpriced for the portion sizes. They are minute. However, I’ve got to say the chips we had were amazing. You only got eight chips for £6 but to be honest with you they were the best chips we’ve ever had so I didn’t mind paying that the dress salmon was expensive for what you got, but I guess you’ve got to expect this in a top class hotel. My only criticism is how many dogs were in the bar area. You could smell doggy smell when you walked through. I have no objection to dogs. I have owned many of them over the years, but I do think there should be a limit of how many are in the hotel public areas.

We stayed here as the first stop when we were walking the Cotswold Way, which starts in Chipping Campden. The room we had was superb. We arrived earlier than the check in time, actually just hoping to be able to dump our bags. However, the room was ready for us, so we were allowed to check in. The beer was good. The staff were all very friendly and chatty. We had our evening meal in the bar, and it was really good quality and not too expensive. Breakfast was plentiful and they started it at 7.30am especially for us (usually 8am). The packed lunch was a little expensive, but there was absolutely loads of it – we could’ve shared one! Definitely recommend.

The food here is exceptional—truly the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had. Every element is cooked to perfection, from the tender meats to the perfectly crisp roast potatoes. Jo and her colleague went above and beyond with their warm, attentive service, which is something you don't come across often these days. The cozy, traditional pub atmosphere only adds to the charm. We've returned several times now, and each visit has been consistently excellent. Generous portions, high-quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality make this place a standout. Highly recommend!

It’s a beautiful old pub on the high street , sat in a court yard garden which was picturesque, greeted by a friendly lady who was pleasant but you could tell she was on auto pilot ( I’m guessing she’s been in the business a lot of years ….) meal was okay, until I payed ….. bill was hand written and the poscecco was nearly £11!!! For a small bottle! I was so shocked I can’t remember the exact price, I did question it and was told that you won’t get cheaper than that round her ( I beg to differ….) ….. left feeling a tad annoyed with myself as I would never pay that price ever!

I was just served here by the most unpleasant woman I've encountered in a long time. I came in with my family to buy some ice cream, and when it was my turn, she wouldn't let me try one of the flavors, claiming they were too expensive for me to try. All the while, she kept asking us "anything else? Anything else?" without giving us time to even think about it. I think it's ridiculous when a family is ordering multiple things.

Dont stay in Room 4. Their restaurant clients sit right under your window. Not only do you hear constant chatter you have no visual privacy unless you pull the curtains closed. In summer its hot with the windows closed and curtains drawn. And it makes the room dark. So only stay here if its colder. No quiet comfy cool place for relaxing if you take an afternoon nap or want to read a book.

I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I visit Chipping Campden! As soon as I walk through the archway and see the courtyard filled with gorgeous hanging flowers and welcoming tables and chairs I feel at home. I can't say enough about the staff...Sandra (the owner) , Big Jo, Little Jo, Donna, Karen....well, they are all so lovely and fun. I stayed in Room 8 ("my room") which faces High Street. I loved waking up and looking outside as locals were going about their day..walking their dogs, heading off to work or school. One morning I was awakened by the clippity-clop of horse hooves which this city girl never hears. It was "so" Cotswolds! Sadly I didn't grab my phone quickly enough to grab a photo. My room had a comfy king sized bed, extra pillows and blankets if needed, a lovely bathroom with large bathtub/shower. Great water pressure which is always a plus for me. Gobs of coat hangers (also a big plus). It was pretty hot a few days but the fan in the room kept me cool and the whirring sound helped me to fall asleep. Most nights though it was cool enough that I had to close the window. Although my room (which I requested) is on the top floor, I didn't mind taking the stairs knowing I was burning off calories from the previous days' Sticky Toffee Pudding and numerous Rhubarb gin and tonics. Many shops and restaurants nearby to choose from...some may think the shops open too late or close too early...but this isn't NYC or Boston....thankfully. You have to go with the flow and enjoy the experience of a quaint and lovely village in The Cotswolds! Besides the friendly staff at the Lygon Arms, the locals are very kind and helpful. I was able to visit many gardens in Chipping Campden during a special "Garden weekend" (raising money for local charities) and wow! The owners were such a delight to chat with, all so proud of their gardens and happy to answer any questions about the history of their homes, what flower is this or that. I really learned a lot! I look forward to my next visit to Chipping Campden and staying at the Lygon Arms!!

Yelp
Lovely, comfortable accommodations and excellent food - only out done by their amazing service! When our late check in turned into a middle-of-the-night arrival, Sandra was more than welcoming at such a late hour. Her kindness didn't stop there however. As we departed to walk the Cotswold Way, I accidentally left my jacket behind. Realizing it miles away, Sandra went above and beyond driving all the way to our next night's accomodations to personally bring it to me. Having since finished our walk to Bath, we can say the Lygon Arms is not to be missed. While Sandra would not accept anything for her trouble, we've given a donation to the National Trust in her honor.

Yelp
Popped in here for a drink while wandering around charming Chipping Campden. The service was really great - we sat at the small bar because it was Sunday and the restaurant was booked up for Sunday roast. Good beer selection, including Cotswolds beers. The gals who work here are really nice and fun, honest locals who treated us as locals even though we aren't. A good place for a drink!

Yelp
We shared the deep fried prawns in phylo. Over batered and one was just batter (prawn was missing). I had the steak, Stilton, and ale pie. Meh. Skimpy on the meat. Ale was not cooked off so the gravy had a bitter taste. My wife had the pork roast. 1/3 of it was inedible fat. Veg was boiled to death. On the upside the drinks were good and the local atmosphere fun.

Yelp
Average is the kindest thing we can say about our Sunday lunch here. Tomato soup tasted as is they added some canned tomatoes and forgot the spices and flavourings--- incredibly boring. Roast beef was stringy and grisly. Cabbage was overly sweet, cauliflower was over cooked, Yorkshire pudding and potatoes were OK. Haddock was quite good, as were the peas, chips were very greasy looking and tasting. Maybe the chef called in sick and they muddled through? Service was quite good and very friendly!

Yelp
Fabulous meal in Chipping Campden. It was a rainy, cold night, and as soon as you walk in, you feel warm and cosy! The building is beautiful and historic. I love the low ceilings and the exposed beams. The service is fantastic - they made us feel like a local. Super friendly and helpful. The portions are HUGE! Everything was delicious and would definitely go back when in CC!
