Eater’s Guide to the Best Dining and Drinking in Boston | Eater Boston

"A Randolph spot cited as an exemplary purveyor of South Shore–style small pies, where the thin crust and cheese that chars to form a lacy perimeter typify the local style." - Erika Adams

The Best South Shore Bar Pizza in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"There are plenty of South Shore bar pizza acolytes who’d tell you that Lynwood, which dates back to 1949, is the cream of the crop. It would be hard to argue with those people. It’s a great place to drink a beer and an even better place to eat a hamburger and onion pizza. Planning to travel? Lynwood offers half-baked pizzas to freeze and finish cooking elsewhere. Cash only." - Terrence Doyle

The South Shore Bar Pie that comes out of the oven under this roof, will blow your socks off, and possibly your boxers/panties. The linguisa pie might even blow all of you clothes off. You will not walk out of here being anything other than 110% satisfied. Yours Truly Worlds Biggest North Shore South Shore Bar Pie Fan

Google
#Barpizza The sausage pie was good and worth the $13.90. It did take 25 minutes after order to be ready. Service was outstanding.

Finally got to try my first South Shore bar pizza. I went right at opening (11:30 AM) and was first to place my order, but I still had to wait 30-35 minutes. However, there is a large parking lot, so I just waited in my car. The lady working there was very friendly. Note that this place is cash only; there is an ATM inside. By the time my order was ready, the place was bustling with diners. The size of the pizza is perfect for one person, which is one of the defining characteristics of a SSBP. The first slice I tried was cool from the drive home. I heated up the rest of the slices, which was the move, since they tasted sooo much better hot. The pizza was very thin but stiff (no flop), with a cracker-like crust. The cheese had a rich, deep flavor with no pull. My only complaint was that it was too salty (I was thirsty for quite a while afterward), but I really enjoyed the pizza overall.

Cash only- nostalgic- old EVERYTHING, BUT CLEAN- NICE BATHROOM BUSY! BUT NOT TOO BUSY FOR GOOD SERVICE! PLENTY OF PARKING- MOST IMPORTANTLY... AMAZING PIZZA! DELICIOUS BUTTERY CRUST- WE TRIED 3 PIZZAS EXTRA CHEESE SUPREME AND LINGUICA

Google
This was our first south shore bar pizza, and while we weren't huge fans of the crust (a bit dry/bland), the toppings were really delicious. Overall, a reasonably priced pizza and would probably visit again. Still yet to compare it to the other big pizza players in town!

Google
Lynwood is a classic pizza spot in town that probably looks the same as when it first opened serving South Shore bar pizza. There is usually a wait and be sure to put your name down at the bar for a table. The restaurant has a local and retro vibe. Cash only. I got half special and bean special that is cooked crispy to hold the toppings. You'll definitely will want to request utensils! The bean special is the first time I have had baked beans on a pizza and it is pretty good. The pizza is loaded and the crust has a perfect crunch. I really enjoy the pizza here and if you're not able to dine in there was many people picking up.

Google
We love the crisp and tasty bar pizza here. We waited an hour for our pizza. I think someone dropped the ball in the kitchen. The. Bartender didn't comment as others who came after enjoyed their pizza. Still 5 stars because I know this isn't typical. Unfortunately we brought our cousin from Texas to show off the place. We ended up rushed because he had a plane to catch. Disappointing! They should have told us and bought us a round for the mistake.

Yelp
Great staff better cold beer and pizza. My favorite the bean special laced. Chuck M., Kingston Ma.

Yelp
It was okay, but I wasn't really impressed for so much hype. Crust/edges were not crispy or "laced." If you're supposed to ask for the edges laced it didn't say so on the menu and the waitress didn't ask or mention anything. I've had better bar pizza at other less hallowed spots. Best bar pizza I've had was at Burnt Edges in Waltham.

Yelp
I saw the Lynnwood Café on the phantom gourmet and decided to have my first Southshore bar pizza once you enter the front door it's a throwback in time The bar area and stools along with the booths, is just the way I like it. There's only one item on the menu and that's pizza My guest is from the area and usually orders from Town Spa Tiffany was our server and we let her know that it was our first time at the Lynwood. Jessica came over and gave us a menu for take home along with aa magnet and a pen for us first timers Thank you Jessica and Tiffany my guest ordered a mushroom pizza and they said it was better than Towne Spa pizza. I had nothing to compare to as this again was my first South Shore pizza I ordered the special with anchovy minus the green peppers. I want to guess and say that they probably use cheddar cheese for the pizza topping. I'm more of a mozzarella fan I also thought the pizza was soft meaning that a fork and knife was needed. I took a mushroom onion and linguiça pizza home and reheated it in the toaster oven The pizza was still soft even after reheating it I like my pizza a little bit more firmer but listen this place has been selling pizzas forever and there's a line out the door so they must be doing something right if you haven't visited go ahead and enjoy yourself a Southshore bar pizza at the Lynnwood Café

Yelp
best bar pie east of the Mississippi. old school bar vibes and cheap beer. Worth whatever wait they may have at the time.

Yelp
AMAZING! I am definitely coming again. Also, great service. Good price and a very cool environment

Yelp
This is a treasured spot for locals. What I love about lynnwood is it is consistent. You get the same quality of pizza every time. It's a small spot and they are cash only, so I would prepare ahead for that. The wait times are long, I've never had it under an hour which shows just how popular and good this place is so make sure to call ahead. There are only about 10 basic pizza options, and they do bar pies. Nothing more! But when the pizza is good, no complaints here! I love the crust on their pizza, it's always a good crisp.

Yelp
The Lynnwood Cafe is a great choice for pizza if you are in the Randoloh. Massachusetts area and craving some pretty stellar pizza. The Lynwood Cafe is a pretty humble place, not huge on the ambiance. But the real star here is the pizza. The staff here was very friendly and again, the pizza is definitely pretty amazing. It hasa nice crust and the cheese and sauce perfectly compliment the crust. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Lynwood Cafe.

Yelp
Decent place with ok vibes.Pay as you go at the bar is kinda funny. Service is fine. Good bar pizza that hits the spot.

Yelp
South Shore Bar pizza. You can't be in business as long as Lynwood and not be good. Worth a trip just remember to bring cash.

Yelp
Stopped in to try after reading reviews as I enjoy town spa bar pizza in Stoughton .... This was very good pizza with nice crust Ordered a pepperoni laced style for 12.80 A draft beer was 1.86 including tax... Nice quick bar seats . Very good, a bit different than Town Spa pizza But I can't say one is better than other as both excellent pizzas

Yelp
Twenty years after leaving metro Boston, THE LYNWOOD is one of two things I still miss! Only pizza, and what a pizza!! Chill bar vibe with tables, arcade games, and often a line! It's even one of the earliest memories for my son, who was only four when we moved to California in July 2005. Service always friendly. One-size pizzas. YUM!

Yelp
Everything you think you know about Pizza is about to change... beginning with where to get great pizza. Randolph, MA happens to be a hidden destination pizza haven like Connecticut! I know it sounds crazy, but these people have a Baked Bean Pizza that will blow you away, and the Pepperoni Pizza is real deal! Order your pizza Laced and Crispy. The burned edges are a must try.

Todd S.

Yelp
One of my favorite bar Pizza places in Massachusetts. Currently living North of Boston and nothing on the North shore compares to this pizza. At least once a month, I travel to Randolph to treat myself. The ambiance is lacking as it's an old restaurant but you're there for the pizza not the decor. The service is alway great. It can get really busy so be prepared to wait. If you call for takeout it could be an hour wait.

Yelp
In my attempt to visit all the SSBP (South Shore Bar Pizza) notables, I landed at the Lynwood Cafe today. Even though this is a local dive bar (albeit charming, in a land-that-time-forgot way), we showed up along with everyone else, even though it was around 1:30pm. I figured the locals were more noontime lunchers. I was wrong. The wait from time of seating to pizza serving ran close to 55 minutes. Even if you'll be eating-in, it's a good idea call your order in before getting in your car. It's suggested on the paper menus, so believe it! My friend had the hamburger pizza, which was generously sprinkled with crumbled beef. I'd have preferred the meat be seasoned a bit more (garlic?), but the tomato sauce shined through for a solidly delicious pie. I had the pepper, onion, mushroom & salami Special. The salami and shrooms come chopped, which makes for an even bite and mouth feel. I rather liked not having hot salami slices slapping me back in the face. The salami, however, needed more zing--it was not easy to taste among the other toppings. I'd try this again and swap out pepperoni for the salami. What the Lynwood does exceptionally well is a crispy bottom and laced edges. No flop on these pies. The comparison: for me, the overall flavor of bar pizza remains #1 with Town Spa in Stoughton, but Lynwood edges them out on all things crust. New favorite trends in SSBP make Bardo's a consideration for cheese blend and unique toppings. If you're a SSBP lover, you need to try them all, because Bardo's could knock off both Lynwood and Town Spa from top rankings.

Yelp
My first time having bar pizza! And it was yummy. We had the special with anchovies. Cash only place so we came prepared.

Mike G.

Yelp
Fantastic food and seems like a good place to hang out. However last night I couldn't help but notice the demeanor of a younger male bartender towards the guests and his coworkers. Even some of the other guys around me were very surprised by his bad attitude especially towards other females. Great food but very odd behavior!

Yelp
Still amazing. Still great. Still always worth the drive out to Randolph for this. 7 out of 7!!

Yelp
We happened to be in the area on Saturday at rush hours. 30-45 mins wait but worth every minutes. Great pizza if not one of the best in southern Mass. The phone was ringing nonstop. People picked up order left and right. Awesome tasty pizza indeed!
google avatar

Yelp
Very disappointed. Heard about and been meaning to try them for years and it didn't live up to the hype. Overpriced and a little undercooked on the bottom. Maybe I caught them on an off day. People were nice though.

Yelp
My husband pulled me into the South Shore bar pizza Facebook page. I get it. I am on the hunt for the best. We have been to two places (together) so far. Lynwood won't be the winner. but let's talk about it: The good: - Love the basic, retro interior (and I don't mean thy put effort into the retro, it's just how it has been) - colorful staff (I over heard another waitress deliver a pizza and say to the customer: " Daddy loves his meat!" ) - Laced edges and cooked to order- well done - Great sauce to cheese ratio - The retro disk slide bowling game (and it's free) - The price! Around $40 or our family of 4 to have lunch The bad: - The retro disk bowling game is partially broken (think missing pins) - The fruit punch I ordered was Gatorade (I hate that funky Gatorade taste) - No changing table - The crust/dough. There is something about it. It made me feel like it was a flatbread but one friend coined it frozen pizza crust and that makes sense too. - The pizza maker went a little crazy with mushrooms in the back. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and a linguica pizza. No mushrooms ordered but there were at least 4 mushrooms found in our pizzas. - Cash only (good lord that's hard in this day and age!) True score: 3.5 and I would totally eat it again

Yelp
Goooood za! Take a step back in time and enjoy some really really good pizza. This is your classic tale of "looks can be deceiving". Ordered a specialized pizza the other day asking for peppers and mushrooms. Boy, did I get a pizza loaded with peppers and mushrooms. It's not a very large pizza, but certainly enough to fill the appetite of two. It's the classic style thin crust pizza. A little different tasting crust than I've had in the past, but I judge a good pizza partially on the taste of the crust, this was good. Peppers were fresh. Mushrooms were fresh. A tad greasy but not enough to disparage the pie. The order was to be ready in 35 minutes. It was.

Yelp
My friend raved about this pizza for years. I finally got up there to Lynwood Cafe and boy was she right. The pizza was the best I ever had. Love the bar pizza. The crust is not thick and doughy but also not thin like a cracker. It was delicious pizza. Call ahead and order yours so when you get there it's about done. Place was clean and the servers were busy but accommodating. (Place was packed right away when it opened. A great stop! Will definitely go back. Oh, and you need to bring cash as they don't take credit cards. Value was great!

Yelp
I met a friend about 2 years ago at the "famous" Lynwood. Few beers and got to check out the men's room - no running water Met him again 3 months later - same deal, no running water in restroom. Our friends wanted to meet up there a few weeks ago. I cringed but thought there is NO Way they would not have addressed the lack of a place to wash up in the men's room. We met our old friends. Got up and headed to the men's room .The cook stepped in front of me and did his business. I went in after him and did mine. (insert drumroll) You guessed it.... I'm not a germ-a-phobe, but I know there are plumbers that could help this establishment out. Pizza is ok. However, I do wonder about any secret ingredients.

Yelp
OMG. Just got my first pizza at Lynwood and oh no; I'm addicted. I got a cheese, because I'm boring, but it was so good. Crispy n cheesy and oh so yummy. Got here at noon and already jammed so I knew it was going to be good. By time we left it was wait only. So good Sat at bar and service was great. Old establishment so very quaint and very reasonable in prices

Andrea M.

Yelp
Finally made it to the Lynwood and it did not disappoint - the pizza was amazing - perfectly cooked and delicious and the service was fun and friendly - definitely worth the trip and can't wait to go back!

Pamela H.

Yelp
There once was a bar with a pan, Where pizza's the star of the plan. Linguica's a dream, Beans? Quite the theme, And pepperoni with hot honey--must try!

John O.

Yelp
I loved the old school look inside it's like stepping back in time, no credit cards accepted cash only or they have a ATM on site. Drinks were reasonably priced and the pizzas were delicious
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Call ahead for take out and by ahead, I mean call in the afternoon for that evening. But the pizza has always been hot and fresh. The staff are super busy but always nice.
google avatar

Cory C.

Yelp
10/10. Phenomenal south shore bar pie. Pizza is light, crispy, and full of flavor. Not greasy, not soggy, and crust is perfect. Service 10/10. Cannot help but feel like a regular here even on our first visit. Cash only establishment, cheap beer, phenomenal pizza and overall excellent experience. If this doesn't land you 5 stars, you don't know food. Simple
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Everyone loves great bar pizza right? Lynwood is old school, delicious small bar pie with the crunchy golden crust. We love the classic cheese - but some other hits have been baked bean , and pickle! Call ahead and pick up - nice and easy- orders never wrong - and pizza is consistently good .

Timothy W.

Yelp
Best bar pizza around. Classic, plenty of other places have tried to replicate this place but Lynwood is still the king

Cara P.

Yelp
Pizza Pizza and more Pizza. If you are in the mood for amazing pizza, great service, and maybe a beer or a bag of chips, this is the place for you. Family friendly spot with pizza at the right price. I have always had the best experiences here. My mouth is watering thinking about biting into a piece of pizza from the Lynwood right now.

Key B.

Yelp
Pizza had the consistency of cardboard, warmed up with mediocre mozzarella melted on top. Would never recommend.

Deborah J.

Yelp
Lynwood's is always busy on the weekends, so on Friday night I made sure to call ahead of time. I ordered 11 pizzas for a small party. Pizzas were ready and were delicious as always! The staff is friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Sachiko S.

Yelp
Wonderful neighborhood place. Friendly service. Draft beer for $1.90! And the most delicious pizza. We ordered it laced and crispy as recommended in reviews. WE WILL BE BACK!!!
google avatar

Foo L.

Yelp
Legendary was the reputation and even Davey Pageviews was a fan at 8.0 so I just had to go. The parking lot was not that full and an open booth was just the ticket. "Hi, what'll it be?"asked the waitress. "Cheese crispy with a Miller Lite." "Coming right up!" So the pie came out and it was solid, no nonsense and hot as Hades. After a while it cooled a bit and boy was it yummy. An 8.0 is about right as the pie was nothing to rave about but it had a great taste, excellent crisp and was delicious. Super solid. Perfect size too. "What's your name sweetheart?" asked the waitress. "My name is Foo!" "Well, good to meet you Foo! Foo what?" "Whole name is Foo Ling!" "Well, what do you know," said the waitress as she adjusted the air conditioning and filled the cute homemade napkin holders. "So, how do you like it now?" she asked. "Near perfect, like the pie!"

Yelp
A bit about me: I love pizza. ALL pizza. I can find something good about any pizza you give me and that includes 7-11 pizza and school english muffin pizza. I love NY style pizza. I love Chicago deep dish. Detroit style, brick oven: all are wonderful. That said, I was raised on the south shore and my 2 favorite types are "New England Greek" and "South Shore Bar". Among the bar pizzas, Lynwood is my #1. #2 is probably Poopsie's. Cape Cod and Crisp are next. Then Town Spa places. For some this may be blasphemy, but they are wrong. :) My judgement is primarily on THE PIZZA, which is what a good pizza review should be all about. Lynwoods keeps things classic and simple and I like that. You can order pizza, maybe some chips/pretzels and beer/wine/liquor/soda. There isn't an extensive menu here. They do one thing and they do it really really well. Town Spa and the others offer MUCH more variety and are great on their own, but the pizza is the star at Lynwood. My favorite pizza choices would be Bean Special, Linguica and Onion, Mushroom, Onion Pepper and plain cheese. If you are going for the first time, I recommend getting a plain cheese on the side. IMHO it's the best way to try a new place and compare it to others. If you want to have the pizza like many of the locals like it, order your pizza "laced", meaning they put tomato sauce up on the top/outer crust, so it comes out extra crispy. Many people also like to order it "well done" or "crispy", but I've always been fine with the default. The atmosphere is awesome if you want to go back in time. The place hasn't changed my entire life (nor as long as my father has gone) and we are in our 40s and 70s, respectively. Wood paneling, a cool bowling shuffle-puck game, a tight bar with great people and waitresses with a fun personality. It is cash only, which used to be an inconvenience, but now they have an ATM in the restaurant. If you sit at the bar, they will expect you to pay with cash per drink. The bartender will leave the change in front of you. Just leave it there...they won't pick up the tips till you are done. You can order a few more and then decide what tip to leave. If you are sitting at a table vs a bar, I recommend ordering your beers in twos. They are smaller glasses (price adjusted) and I tend to take them down 2 at a time without them getting warm. Warning: if you are doing takeout on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, you probably want to plan in advance. Sometimes the wait for pizza is measured in hours, so if you're planning a big pizza night, call at 5 to check out the scene and decide whether to order then. Worst-case, you can order a set of "half-bakes" at 5 pm, pick them up and toss them in your own oven to finish the bake. Then when your party people come over at 7 or 8, it's fresh, hot and not overcooked. That said, I like the "second cook" of their pizza as much as when it's fresh. In summary, I love the place. It's one of my favorite places to go with friends and it's a go-to for takeout. Never change, Lynwood.

Amy L.

Yelp
Amazing bar pizza. I moved out of the area so I always make it a point to go when I'm back in town. It never disappoints. The wait time can be busy so plan accordingly
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
It is not often that I write a poem about a restaurant. In fact, I have never done it before. But sometimes one is moved by the beauty of the moment. And so, I give you... "Ode To The Lynwood Cafe" by Jeffrey Ray Wine On an early, autumn day Before winter came to stay My friend and I found our way To the lovely, old Lynwood Cafe Their South Shore-style bar pizza was an A There's so much more I want to say But all that praise would take a day And I am hungry, and on my way to the lovely, old, Lynwood Cafe
google avatar

Peter Z.

Yelp
Grew up on the south shore of Boston and probably ate this pizza at least once a month till I moved away in my early thirties. That being said I've never given them the stellar review they deserve! Now residing on the north shore I still make the pilgrimage to head back down to enjoy these "bar pies". Nothing has changed in all these years with the establishment and that's not a bad thing.(if it's not broken don't fix it) the only place I order pepper and onion pie, gotta have just cheese and usually mix up the third choice when ordering from this no frills pizza joint. There's handful of good south shore pizza shops in the area but Lynwood is the OG foe me. Don't be put off by the wait times there's a reason for that!
google avatar

Maureen P.

Yelp
The Lynwood is a landmark for pizza in the South Shore but be aware that they serve bar pizza and chips (that's it). And it's cash only. Great for takeout pizza.
google avatar

Sean Matthew L.

Yelp
Lynwood Cafe is an institution when it comes to bar pizza. It's the place for pizza in the area. You can buy frozen uncooked pizzas at the holidays to ship as gifts. This kind of gives you an idea of the cult following behind this pizza. The place is almost always busy. Me personally, I've always been a Cristo's kind of guy myself, but they do a solid pizza. They serve simple drinks and simple food. The pizza is greasy, but damn is it good. Cash only, there's an atm if you need one, but expect to pay a fee to use it. Set your expectations levels to neighborhood dive bar and you'll come out happy.
google avatar

Jodi M.

Yelp
Amazing as always! I've been going here since I learned to chew, and I still try to get back at least twice a year. I recommend mushroom/ onion laced.
google avatar

Barbara K.

Yelp
We have only been doing takeout here, never eat in before. We love their pizzas and it is one of the best so far. When my boyfriend introduce me to it I was hooked from day one
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Good pizza, but over hyped! Good service, cool old school game in there. I'd go back but not rush back.
google avatar

Lena V.

Yelp
I feel like Linwood is more popular for take out than for dining in. Well, we love coming to Linwood Cafe. You may feel the selection of drinks and pizzas is very limited (yes, it is) and the restaurant is not fancy enough (again yes, it's not fancy), but there is something special about this place. There is a little bar to sit at and watch the buzzing or plenty of wooden boots and chairs to sit at. The ladies will take great care of you no matter how busy this place is. Available drinks are served in tiny glasses that could easily fit in a doll house, and the bar pizza comes on paper plates (with no utensils). And yes, it is absolutely delicious! I ate the entire mushroom pizza on my own last night. No sharing. No leftovers. No doggie bag.
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Awesome bar style pizzas served with a smile. There's a bit of a wait for each pizza to be made, but you're at a bar! So knock back a few brews and by the time your pie arrives you'll be ready to wolf down the entire thing!
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
My buddy and I are doing a tour of the best bar pizza restaurants on the south shore. I worked up the road from the Lynnwood for 11 years and never had one of their pizzas. So I started here. The pizzas are always rated number 1, and deservedly so...love them. I don't think the Lynnwood has remodeled since the early sixties, but that adds to its charm. Beers are served in a high ball Glass for that nostalgic feel. A must if you're in the area!
