Yelp
A bit about me: I love pizza. ALL pizza. I can find something good about any pizza you give me and that includes 7-11 pizza and school english muffin pizza. I love NY style pizza. I love Chicago deep dish. Detroit style, brick oven: all are wonderful. That said, I was raised on the south shore and my 2 favorite types are "New England Greek" and "South Shore Bar".
Among the bar pizzas, Lynwood is my #1. #2 is probably Poopsie's. Cape Cod and Crisp are next. Then Town Spa places. For some this may be blasphemy, but they are wrong. :)
My judgement is primarily on THE PIZZA, which is what a good pizza review should be all about. Lynwoods keeps things classic and simple and I like that. You can order pizza, maybe some chips/pretzels and beer/wine/liquor/soda. There isn't an extensive menu here. They do one thing and they do it really really well. Town Spa and the others offer MUCH more variety and are great on their own, but the pizza is the star at Lynwood.
My favorite pizza choices would be Bean Special, Linguica and Onion, Mushroom, Onion Pepper and plain cheese. If you are going for the first time, I recommend getting a plain cheese on the side. IMHO it's the best way to try a new place and compare it to others. If you want to have the pizza like many of the locals like it, order your pizza "laced", meaning they put tomato sauce up on the top/outer crust, so it comes out extra crispy. Many people also like to order it "well done" or "crispy", but I've always been fine with the default.
The atmosphere is awesome if you want to go back in time. The place hasn't changed my entire life (nor as long as my father has gone) and we are in our 40s and 70s, respectively. Wood paneling, a cool bowling shuffle-puck game, a tight bar with great people and waitresses with a fun personality.
It is cash only, which used to be an inconvenience, but now they have an ATM in the restaurant. If you sit at the bar, they will expect you to pay with cash per drink. The bartender will leave the change in front of you. Just leave it there...they won't pick up the tips till you are done. You can order a few more and then decide what tip to leave.
If you are sitting at a table vs a bar, I recommend ordering your beers in twos. They are smaller glasses (price adjusted) and I tend to take them down 2 at a time without them getting warm.
Warning: if you are doing takeout on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, you probably want to plan in advance. Sometimes the wait for pizza is measured in hours, so if you're planning a big pizza night, call at 5 to check out the scene and decide whether to order then. Worst-case, you can order a set of "half-bakes" at 5 pm, pick them up and toss them in your own oven to finish the bake. Then when your party people come over at 7 or 8, it's fresh, hot and not overcooked. That said, I like the "second cook" of their pizza as much as when it's fresh.
In summary, I love the place. It's one of my favorite places to go with friends and it's a go-to for takeout. Never change, Lynwood.
