Essential Brewery Updates | Eater Boston

"After years as a celebrated food truck and caterer, M & M BBQ — taken over by Geo Lambert and founded by his grandparents Marion and Maurice Hill in 1982 — will move into a permanent restaurant space inside Dorchester Brewing Company this fall, bringing its acclaimed ribs and barbecue to a full-service setting." - Eater Staff

M & M BBQ to Open Barbecue Restaurant Inside Dorchester Brewing Company | Eater Boston

"I learned that this long-running family barbecue operation—originally called M & M Ribs and founded in 1982 by Marion and Maurice Hill—was taken over about a decade ago by Geo Lambert, who has since run it as a catering and pop-up business and gained acclaim for its ribs. After popping up at Dorchester Brewing Co. before, M & M will move into a permanent restaurant space inside the brewery this fall, becoming a fixture in the taproom and offering its lineup of barbecue meats, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and a host of new items Lambert will prepare for the full-scale restaurant, with a grand opening estimated in October." - Dana Hatic

Google
Went here as overflow for young BBQ. Ordered the fried chicken plate. Delicious. Good portions and good rice and macaroni salad. This is a great plate lunch place.

David Brian C.

Google
This is the perfect hidden food place that locals go to. Good food, good prices and the service is practically non existent. Meaning, it's 99% take out. There is a small table outside but that's why it's cool. No nonsense food at a good price. I highly recommend the Bento #1, the Katsu and the fried chicken.

Sang “JohnLee” M.

Google
Tried the sweet & sour spareribs for $11.90 and found it to be delicious and they gave a lot. The lady working was very friendly and sweet. This is definitely a hidden gem.

Jefry T.

Google
It was yummy! The chicken skin was crispy, just how I like it.

Alexander Van M.

Google
Good prices and a large variety of plate lunches. I recommend the mixed BBQ, you definitely get some bang for your buck. I have seen the garlic chicken mentioned, but when I got it, it was unnecessarily hard despite having good flavor. I'm a regular at this place because there is a lot to try and you only have to spend about 10 bucks for a filling meal.

Google
Great food and awesome prices. I have ate here a few times and keep going back because the taste and prices.

Google
Excellent food. We will return next time in Oahu.

Google
Great breakfast deals and reasonably priced bentos and plate lunches. Love their cheap burgers and sandwiches. Lots of free parking, but dine-in is currently unavailable.

Yelp
Just freaking delicious. Family had a bento, bbq plate lunch and fried shrimp. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
This establishment is one of the more affordable fast food spots. I would have to say that it was just ok. I would have to say portion size for $14 is kinda small. Chicken Katsu curry was as expected. Gravy is from Their curry stew which is to be expected. Just don't expect Japanese style curry. Hamburger steak was thin and very underwhelming. Once I got the fish sandwich and that was stinky. I would never recommend or order it again. Whenever I stop by, I would recommend sticking to the hamburger. It gives old fashioned drive inn vibes. Fries are usually good. Fried chicken is one of my favorite things here but it's not home style flavor more Chinese style Which is still Ono.

Yelp
We ordered the mix plate and the garlic chicken which came with rice and mac salad. This spots a super hole in the wall with no seating inside. You actually can't even order no inside and just at the door. However, the lady working there was sweet and our food was ready very quickly. As everyone stated, the portion size is pretty big. The pricing is affordable compared to most places! I would say the garlic chicken was mostly batter and thin pieces of chicken but the mix plate is worth it! The meats were well seasoned and tender. Next time I will definitely get the mixed plate.

Yelp
We are visiting island on vacation and this was our first stop to eat. We were all hungry! Food lives up to the ratings. We all ate everything on our plates and portion size is good too. Unfortunately, we had to eat outside by door but it made meal even better. Definitely worth the stop.

E W.

Yelp
They will charge you 85 cents extra if you use a credit card, not 3% as it state on the door. The chicken katsu was cooked in old oil so it tasted like fish. I don't eat fish, so I couldn't eat this. Never coming back and everyone should avoid this place. I knew I should have just go to ohmygrill that is close by instead.

Yelp
Takeout lunch in Aiea, O'ahu, Hawaii... I was in real starvation mode when I figured out that i was hungry because I hadn't had lunch yet. It was after 3pm when I looked through my list of places that i haven't visited. M & M BBQ had pretty good reviews from friends such as Bruddah Fran, Rod U., Peter T., Emi H. (Former Community Manager of Yelp Hawaii), Clay Y., Kathy Y., Cathy T. (Former Yelp Hawaii Ambassador), and Mikey C. Of Ventura! Located on the ground level of a two-story building, next to the former Aiea Library, M & M BBQ is takeout only. The entrance of the restaurant was blocked off with a table. Order and pay here. If you have cash, you can avoid the credit card fee. Service was pleasant and efficient! I got my Hamburger Mix Plate and BBQ Mix plate quite quickly. I ate the Hamburger first... real comfort food! The beef stew (with tender meat, but slightly bland gravy) was hidden under the teri beef. I didn't really care for the teri beef, but it filled my tummy! Next, I was disappointed in the BBQ short ribs (kalbi), but was pleasantly surprised by the BBQ chicken... wow! And I don't really like chicken! This one was well marinated and yummy! The rice was good and the macaroni salad was great! Gosh... It all evened out! The prices were reasonable! I'll be back!

Yelp
Always great to come back here either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We love to support small business / mom and pops shops. They're the ones that brings back to old school days. Their portion on the mink loco Moco was just right for me and the Mr. Had the bento special that filled him right up! Mahalo M&M BBQ for another satisfying yummy in our tummy ;)
google avatar

Kaiu K.

Yelp
The owners are really nice. Their food is tasty, plate lunches are good size and the prices are great!

Yelp
I happened upon this place situated right across the Aiea Library. A Small littlr hole in thr wall next to island manapua. This is strictly take out only. They say they open at 8:30 am and they literally come in to open thr shop at 8:30am. An asian lady and man more past the middle age. They was old skool ..very appreciative and service oriented. The food is your typical plate lunch fare and thr portions are decent and prices very affordable. If you are looking to grab good food at fair prices give them a try..nothing wrong here.

Yelp
We were looking for a local spot near Pearl Harbor and found M&M a mile away. Highly recommend making the drive and grabbing a meal. The prices are also good!
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Large menu to choose from. Breakfast is served all day with lunch included. Prices are very reasonable & portions are good.Been a customer for years.
google avatar

T S.

Yelp
Food and prices are good here. The beef curry was really tender and went really good with their mac salad. The hamburger patties are homemade which is hard to find nowadays. It's only take out no dine in anymore.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our go to place for catered food but I swear it's never ready on time no matter how much notice I give?? Placed my order yesterday for pick up at 6pm today. It's 6:25 and they still cooking. I asked how much longer and she said ready soon. Didn't give me a time. So annoying when I'm supposed to be at the party with the food!! Poor planning on their part!!

Yelp
Tried the sweet & sour spareribs for $11.90 and found it to be delicious and they gave a lot. The lady working was very friendly and sweet. This is definitely a hidden gem.

Yelp
This hole in the wall has been a staple in Aiea for many years. The foos is good and you can't beat the quantity you get for the price AMAZING! Very friendly. Since Covid better to phone order and pick up at the door no inside dinning .

Yelp
I love supporting small, local business and I've always seen this mom & pop while driving to Queen St Cafe. I picked up dinner one night from them since Queen St closes so early, and it's better than L&L for me. Service was pleasant. I ordered the bbq mix: bbq chicken, bbq beef, & Kalbi, and my mom said food was good but the bbq beef a bit tough. She did mention that it was tasty. I'll have to try them again!

Lorna M.

Yelp
This is package C ( correction) so perfect and so delicious. I will continue ordering from this place . The owner is so kind, the food is so good and the price is perfect.

Yelp
The aunty is super sweet and her food is super good!!! It's nice to see her children come along side her. I have catered from her mutiple times and the food is always super good, more than enough to feed everyone and she is very prompt. Everyone asks all the time where did we get the food, as all our guest have enjoyed it. Thank you Aunty!
google avatar

Zasha L.

Yelp
I hope this place never goes out of business. I will cry lol. I've been going here since I was little and hands down the best food for the best prices. Best kalbi compared to $30 plates out there! Absolutely love here!
google avatar

Kalani B.

Yelp
Decent portion, quick service. The inside dining area was closed. But they had at outside table with 4 chairs.
google avatar

Vern F.

Yelp
Food was good. Would go again. However had a hiccup was too late to correct because my orders was taped in a box when I got home found no sauce for the chicken katsu and ordered a shrimp burger but it was a hamburger sandwich. I swear I repeated what I ordered when I went to pick up.
google avatar

Shon K.

Yelp
Place is the BEST BANG for your buck!! Super friendly place. Food come out quick, and on point
google avatar

Yelp
Got bento #1 and a can soda. Prices are decent and portions good. If ordering a can soda, I'd advise getting it right away. I opted to get it with the order and the guy forgot to give me the soda.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for first time 10/20 4pm. You can't go in but you can order at the door. They made every thing fresh for us...we could hear the grill sizzling from outside! I had the mini bento which was only like $7 and some change...it had 1 spam, 1 scoop rice and Mac salad, 1 good size piece beef teriyaki, and 1 chicken breast. I was stuffed! everything was delicious and fresh! Husband had the bigger mix plate which had so much food that he was stuffed too. We both consumed our meal quickly, but luckily I snapped these photos right quick! we will be back to try more dishes. You can't dine in but I recommend this local business for a nice, plate lunch freshly made to order! They're open long hours and looks like they cater too! Give them a try... I'm sure you'll enjoy something here!

Yelp
Came by to get some Hawaiian bbq and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and prices. We got a bbq mixed plate (bbq chicken, bbq beef and kalbi) and a seafood combo (fried shrimp with meat that was upgraded to kalbi). We also got a piece of fried chicken and mochiko chicken just to try it. I didn't really care for the fried chicken. It was pretty plain to me. The mochiko chicken is a little sweeter and was better than the fried chicken. I also didn't really care for the fried shrimp. The mixed plate was better. Located in a small plaza with parking available. Highly recommend for reasonably priced hawaiian food!
google avatar

Yelp
Ok. Found this place in a Yelp search under "Korean Restaurants" and I got to say, it's not a Korean restaurant. It's a local plate lunch place. A good one at that. Even though I live nearby, I haven't tried this place before. I had the mix plate (forgot to take a picture). This is definitely a place to come back to. Things to know. It's take out only. Parking is limited but there's nearby parking and even the small parking lot in front has a quick turnover.
google avatar

Bob S.

Yelp
Call the cops! The food prices are a steal for the quality and amount you get. It's all takeout for now but wow lau lau!! ... finally a place we can afford to eat. And service it quick! It's an easy place to get to in Aiea. Next to the library that closed. Very nice people too! It's a little hole in the wall plate lunch type place that we will continue to go to now that we've been there and tried it! I'm willing to be that they're the cheapest in town. So if you're on a tight budget, or just like a good value for quality and quantity like the good ole days - this is the place!
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
Excellent food! We got the BBQ mixed plate. The meat was tender and yummy! There's only one table outside, so best to plan to take away.

Jason S.

Yelp
The bento plate specials are a great value! I got the #2 with Portuguese sausage instead of ham. The everything was so delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Update: When I went back, I immediately asked for a refund and without a question, the lady working popped open the register and gave me a refund. She cut me off a few times and made excuses for the reason why the food is like this. I asked if she wanted to hear it to help them improve. "No, I don't" This tells me 1. You know the food isn't good, without any explanation you open the register for a refund. 2. It has happened a lot more than you would like to admit. 3. You don't care to make customers happy for the longevity of your business. **When a person has a bad experience, they tell more people than if they had a good one.

Yelp
Hmmmm, This wasn't our first choice but since Kim Chee 7 was closed -On a monday "for cleaning". we decided to try here. It is what it says Bar B Que. Don't get it twisted with Korean Bar B Q. We ordered Pan#2 comes with bar b que chicken - Beef and short ribs. (thin ones). They all taste the same The chicken -beef - short ribs all tasted the same! True talk. We even ordered Kim chee when we saw the sign that read: HOME MADE KIM CHEE! Well not to my liking or my family liking. Just cabbage with a hint of kim chee flavor. look at the picture. It speaks for itself. If you're hungry and really don't care about the flavor then this is the spot. Although reasonably priced, I don't think i'll be back again.

Yelp
Good food always! Good service and location! The family loves the food Must try again soon for occasion

Yelp
I purchase the uncook meat to take to the beach and BBQ. It was so good. This is actually so good that it can feed 5 ppl or more . It was 48.00 for 10 chicken, 5-6 pcs of teriyaki beef it's pretty good size and 5 bone in Kalbi. It was good. It was worth buying this pack. I wound probably purchase it again. Great customer service and the owner son is amazing! He takes care of his customers. I am for sure always going to return back. The fry chicken is a must.
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
This was our first spot after getting our rental, we were all starving and I found this place that had good reviews so we decided to give it a shot. The plate lunches are so huge and absolutely delicious!! No place to eat inside so we ate in the car because we were so hungry. We are definitely going back before we leave.

Yelp
Hubby wanted to eat here. It's a small place with a few tables to dine in. It was 5 of us. Hubby, daughter, myself and my two nieces. We were greeted hello as we walked in. I ordered a chicken katsu sandwich with a large fruit punch. Daughter got the garlic chicken with rice and Mac salad with a root beer to drink. We got our drinks first and then shortly our food came out one by one. Food was good! I enjoyed my chicken katsu sandwich with my fruit punch. Everyone enjoyed their food. However there was no public restroom to use here. Kind of a negative because my daughter had to go right away and we ended up using the boba place we went to. Hence, the four stars. Overall, we had a good experience even though the lady gave my niece a root beer rather than an iced tea. She didn't charge for the drink. Good call. This place was good!
google avatar

Emmett M.

Yelp
Love this hole in the wall restaurant! I really like the fried chicken, reminds me of another restaurant "Jan's" who used to butterfly chicken the same way. This is the closest fried chicken I've experienced that is like the way "Jan's" used to cook. The skin is crispy and my wife loves it! Officially my favorite fried chicken plate!

Yelp
M&M has been a staple to most families in Aiea for years. I remember being in high school and going down there for juice and a snack, and they always had the best prices and they're the sweetest people ever. My brother would walk us over there when we were growing up and they never forget to ask how he's doing, even though he moved away years ago. My family used to go every Saturday morning for their $6 breakfast plates and tremendous service. Even though they're a small mom and pop shop they are always quick and get it right every time. The mom is up front and managing the front of house, while the husband is on the grill managing the back of house. They always give a generous amount of any breakfast meat you choose. And their eggs are always made perfect. Over easy eggs mixed up in the rice with shoyu and ketchup used to be our favorite way to eat it. I am so grateful and I hope that any time people head to Aiea Manapua they stop by M&M as well, not only are they affordable, they've always taken care of the families in the community. Thank you M&M for always staying true to Aiea!

Marvin K.

Yelp
Great food and very reasonable prices! Breakfasts are the bomb! All food at this place is prepared nicely and very tasty! Ask for Leiha, she's the owner of this place with her husband! It's a take out only but they have a table outside. They used to have a sit in with 4 tables but since covid, it's a take out only. It's my "go to" BBQ!!!

Victoria L.

Yelp
Love this place!! We've been using them for all Our parties the last several years and they're awesome! Quantity and Quality are both there!

Ray H.

Yelp
Been coming here for years & my family loves it here! I even remember when we could dine in & everything. But since covid it's only takeout & they help you right at the door. You can either walk up & order or phone order. BTW It's still cash only Top items to order : Breakfast : Link sausage w/ rice and eggs - Spam and eggs sandwich Lunch: Bacon Cheeseburger w/ French Fries Dinner : Loco Moco w/ rice & Mac They have a bunch of things on the menu but what I listed would be my go to items when I order from them. Parking is tight with only 8-10 stalls so be prepared to park in the Bigger lot & walk over.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a tiny place with no seating. The food is phenomenal. Literally the best plate lunch I had my entire trip. Prices can't be beat!

Nayeli D.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall place ! Good prices and good food! Service was really good too!

Glenn S.

Yelp
We wanted to try something a little different when we say youtubers eating at "cheap eats" especially when it's close to home. Ordered the bbq beef, hamburger (steak?) and stew; mrs ordered the bbq short ribs, chix & beef. Also went next door for manapua at Aiea Manapua. Got home and wen grinze...oh so hungry. BBQ beef was tasty although sort of thin; hamburger was very thin, but tasty; and stew was good with a few pieces of beef without fat. Mrs enjoyed her plate lunch and made a small dent in her bento. She commented that the ribs were tough. We both agreed that because of the affordable price and hugh servings, it was an OK deal, but I wouldn't go back again only because of the many restaurants all over the island with Great food. Limited parking and I had a difficult time reversing and getting out of the lot. I recommend parking at the old Aiea library for easy access.

Yelp
Brah, I ain't gonna lie to ya...........if ya looking for old skool local style comfort grindz, this hole-in-da-wall joint called - M & M B-B-Q is da place!!!! Thanks to my Yelp buddies - Rod U., Emi H., Clay Y., Scott B., & Eric M. for posting their wonderful reviews and pics, but what really put me over the edge about this place was seeing Clay Y.'s pics of his mini fried chicken plate!!!! Then, when I read Bruddah Rod U.'s review...........I really liked the things he said about this place..........and I quote him - 1. "25 years and still going strong!" Dat means this place is legit for local grindz!!! 2. "Small and nondescript with just three booths. Takeout is their main business." Dat means this place is truly a small mom & pops joint............although the restaurant is small, they do have a few booths, as well as tables & chairs inside of the restaurant. The restaurant is clean, so no worry about this hole-in-da-wall joint. 3. "Incredibly friendly mom and pop service." Yes indeed! I experienced this last night when I wen' get some grindz with my friend! 4. "Dirt cheap. Prices from 10 years ago. Around $5.50 for a mini, $8.00 for a regular, $8.70 for a three item BBQ mix." Bruddah Rod was spot on about that!!! Although Bruddah Rod's Pimp Hand is STRONG (as I see him eat at a lot of High End joints), he can get down ghetto wid' da best of them yo! Lol! 5. "Choke food. Kanak attack! You've been warned." Brah, they sure gave a lot of GRINDZ!! But as a PROFESSIONAL Frrrrrrrried Chicken Eater...........I wen' lick & polish dat plate off and I neva get da Kanak Attack! Handle, Randal!!!! 6. "The flavor, old school." Das what Bruddah Fran truly loves.............Local Grindz, Old Skool, cuz I grew up eating like this, and I one old fut! Lol! So I drove from town all the way to Aiea to check out M & M B-B-Q, and I must tell you it was worth da trek.........no regrets! Upon walking into the restaurant, we were greeted right away, and to be honest I didn't even bother to look at the menu because after I saw Clay Y.'s pics of the Fried Chicken plate, I knew I had to give this dish a try. As for my friend, he decided to get the Garlic Chicken plate. What can I say about da Grindz????? Are you Kiddin' me????? Did ya see my plate?????? DAS WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!!!!! I got 3 HUGE butterfly (bone-in thigh) pieces of deep fried chicken, fried to perfection!!! My fried chicken came out piping hot, & the marinade was delicious!!!! With my plate lunch I got two scoops white rice, & one scoop mac salad. As for my friend, his Garlic Chicken plate was MASSIVE too! The Garlic Chicken was cut up in bite sized pieces, accompanied by two scoops white rice, & one scoop mac salad. The Garlic Chicken had very nice garlicky taste (I tried a piece from my friend). Overall, a very cool mom & pops local diner! Be ready to eat when you come here! Awesome prices..........and generous portions!!!! I'll be back again real soon should I be in the area!

Yelp
This is the spot for local kine grinds! Hole in the wall place with bomb local food. Parking is free. Service us always friendly and everything is ono! I always get the fried chicken plate and a cheeseburger! Prices are very reasonable and good portions. They also cater.

Yelp
M&M has been around for a long time and has delicious and very reasonably priced food. I love their BBQ chicken plate! Ordering from them on the phone is great. I call in and she asks what I want and I say the dishes and she says OK and that's it. No asking what my name is, no telling me when to come pick it up, just OK. I know from experience to show up in 10 or 15 mins and my food is ready!! Check out M&M next time you're in Aiea. It's far far better than L&L and it's a great little place to get a good local plate. No photos this time! I'll add more next time.

Marc S.

Yelp
I came to this place based on reviews from yelp. So disappointed, I ordered garlic chicken and it was halfway cooked, this is what was given to me. It looked like tempura vegetables posing as chicken and many chicken pieces were pink. Use caution and check your food before you leave. Be careful with this business !!!!!

Yelp
Picture it, a bunch of twenty-somethings and me at a home game (I thought I dressed the part). "Anyone know an old school plate lunch resto with good teri beef?" I ask. "Go try [name withheld]. They've been around forever. Like five years" to nods of agreement. SMH. Enter M&M. 25 years and going strong (and to think, this isn't that old to me). - Small and nondescript with just three booths. Takeout is their main business. - Incredibly friendly mom and pop service. - Dirt cheap. Prices from 10 years ago. Around $5.50 for a mini, $8.00 for a regular, $8.70 for a three item BBQ mix. - Choke food. Kanak attack! You've been warned. The flavor, old school. Aloha shoyu, sugar, fresh grated ginger and some sake. Well marinated. The beef, short ribs and chicken are softer, milder, with more rounded sweetness. Grandmas home cooking and the complete opposite of L&L's, in your face soy and caramelized sugar firmness. The hamburger and loco moco also good. A bit of fillers to keep it soft and moist. Flavorful pan gravy. Why did it take 25 years to discover this place when I live just 10 minutes away? One of the best plate lunches and a true taste of a vanishing past.

Jocelyn M.

Yelp
Delicious food and great prices! My family members and I got the bbq mix and bbq chicken lunch plates and we we were really happy with the food. We all had leftovers for dinner. Will be coming back.
