We wanted to have a nice wagyu meal during our Japan trip, and we decided upon Matsusaka Gyuu Yakiniku M as our restaurant of choice. As the name suggests, they serve a type of wagyu called Matsusaka beef from the city of Matsusaka, in Mie Prefecture.
My friend made reservations a couple weeks beforehand for dinner Thursday night at 7:30 pm for our party of 3.
You can either order a full course or a la carte. They have three tiers of courses: platinum (15,180 yen pp), premium (10,780 yen), or special (8580 yen). If you want to order a course, please note you need two minimum orders per table, and the orders for the rest of the party can be done a la carte.
They also offer an omakase platter which is roughly 10,000 yen pp. The omakase platter differs from the other courses in that it comes only with 6 cuts of Matsusaka beef, whereas the courses include side dishes, banchan, dessert, etc.
Two of us chose the special full course with the sushi add on for 638 yen per piece, and the last person chose to order a la carte.
As part of the special course, we received: banchan, veggies for grilling, Matsusaka beef sashimi, 3 cuts of Matsusaka beef (kalbi, round, and bottom sirloin flap), thinly sliced beef yakishabu (ribeye slices), garlic rice served in a hot stone pot, and warabimochi for dessert.
It was my first time trying Matsusaka beef, but everything was amazing. The beef really just melts in your mouth; it's so soft!! The standouts from the meal for me were the garlic rice and the sirloin flap, though the top round my friend ordered a la carte was amazing as well.
The beef nigiri sushi was a bit underwhelming compared to the actual cuts of beef. I would not recommend getting this.
Service was a bit lacking, which we found surprising in a high end place like this, and hence my 4 star rating. I thought they would grill for us, but they just started handing us platters of meat without any instructions on how to cook them. We had to press the service button just to ask them how long to grill each cut of meat.
Also, they messed up our order halfway through the meal and almost didn't bring us all of the courses. Someone suddenly came and asked if we were ready for dessert, and we were all so confused because we were expecting more beef. The staff went to check, and sure enough we were still missing two more cuts of Matsusaka beef.
