Capitol Hill’s Korean Grocery From H Mart Is Finally Open - Eater Seattle

"Capitol Hill finally has its Korean grocery store — M2M, what H Mart calls its “urban convenience” format — right next to Capitol Hill Station. The new shop opened Friday and will be open 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekends. M2M means “morning to midnight” and is a grocery store from the Hanahreum Group, the same Korean American grocery company that owns H Mart. Though it’s described as a “convenience” store, photos on the Capitol Hill Seattle Blog show a selection that looks just as expansive as the H Mart locations in Seattle, with plenty of produce, meat, prepared food-to-go, and rows and rows of snacks and condiments." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart

This market has an excellent selection of Korean items — and is conveniently located next to the Cap Hill light rail stop. Despite the popularity of Korean food, many Korean ingredients are absent from most grocery stores. That’s why this place rocks! I easily found doenjang (bean paste), ssamjang (bean paste w/ gochujang), soybean paste 4 jjajangmeon, and soju from Jeju Island. I love this place & look forward to returning! Thank you 4 saving me a car trip up north!

bought tofu dated July 8. got home, put everything in the fridge. started dinner, opened it, it's covered in mold. can't return it, though, because certain products can only be returned within TWO HOURS

Food court upstairs has great Korean food! The store has a bunch of asian items you cant find in a normal grocery store. Very clean and organized.

I was excited about a new market opening up in the neighborhood. I know the Central Coop was hoping to get selected for the location. I was out shopping for a few things and since it was finally open I went in. The place is smaller than I had thought it would be. Even with the smaller carts, it was not easy to navigate if there was more than a couple of patrons in the same aisle. I took a few pictures for this review and then set about looking for a couple of items. My nieces introduced me to a Pocky like snack, and I was comparing the picture of the snack to the items on the shelves, and suddenly some man sharply asked me why I was taking pictures. I have reviewed a number of places now and never have I been asked about it. I tried to explain, I was looking for an item and figured he worked there since he took issue with the pictures. He barely looked at me and sharply said no pictures, why you take pictures? While walking away and ignoring my question. I thought maybe he didn't work there but didn't like someone taking pictures? I had taken pictures for the review but I had stopped when I started shopping. I only had my cell out to compare the picture of the item I was shopping for. I did confirm he does work there, tho in what capacity I don't know. I tried to finish my shopping but I could tell I was being shadowed and that made me feel uncomfortable, so I put everything back and left. I have not been back and don't think I will.

Wandered in here after there was a 2-hour wait at the brunch spot we wanted to check out. Loved all the hot options and went upstairs to grab some food. Lots of hidden gems in here.

Google
Great selection of Asian foods, cookware fresh bakery seafood and bulk foods. I was not expecting the nice selection and ideas for dinner with fresh meats , seafoods and more! Was little hard to find help but that’s ok. I enjoyed the grocery stop. My Son found me some vegan noodles, which was great.

After being a repeat patron, I won’t be buying anything here after the way I was treated today by the general manager. I was a paying customer in the grocery store and asked the manager for the restroom code because I was experiencing a bathroom emergency related to my medication. I told him as much, and he denied me despite me telling him it was an urgent matter and I didn’t want to have an accident inside the store. He asked me what I wasn’t understanding about his rules and told me to go ahead and soil myself. I have reported this store now to the Seattle Civil Rights Office for not observing the Seattle Restroom Access Laws for people with medical conditions.

Google
- Good packaged Asian food selection with many drinks, dry goods, snacks, and treats. Some unique produce but not as much as an H mart or Uwajimaya. Decent grab-and-go area. Prices are a little high for what things are. Also staples like milk, eggs, cheese, etc... with the occasional non-Asian international item. - The French inspired bakery inside has very tasty things and I can't say enough good things about their expensive cakes and desserts. - The food court upstairs is finally open and has more affordable Asian food than what is in the area, though the quality is average. Still, it's convenient to stop in for a bite and quiet rest. There are claw machines in the back. Overall it's in a very convenient location, very clean, and a great addition to the neighborhood despite the lack of bargains and sales.

Yelp
I got these sweet & spicy Sun chips when I was in South Korea and loved them, they don't sell this flavor at regular stores here in the US. It is the BEST! So excited when I found them here!

Yelp
I have now had two separate occasions, months apart, on which the security guard accuses me of stealing and makes a whole big scene at the front of the store?? I do not steal, I literally pulled off my jacket, emptied my pockets, very clearly showed him I did not take anything, and all he does is smile and say, "okay". No apology, no admitting he was wrong, just a smug look on his face as we walk out of the store?? Get some glasses dude

Yelp
While I love that there seems to be an accessible Asian market here in Capitol Hill, why is everything here so expensive? How do I gauge this? Coming from California where I am used to H-Mart pricing in the Bay Area, you can't tell me that similar items being $1-2 higher here is simply due to the area. You may as well shop at Whole Foods for produce at these prices. The deli section was also a bit sad. Coming in the evening, there was little to no food leftover to pick from, so any chance at getting a partially discounted bentou was just out of the question. Despite the food, the fact that a dedicated Asian market here is always a good sign so shop here in a pinch.

Yelp
This place is GREAT! M2M is perfectly located in the heart of Cap Hill, directly beside the light rail station. Lots of fresh produce, a huge selection of Asian market goods with a delicious bakery inside as well as hot food! No complaints here! ありがとう ございます!!!!

Yelp
I've eaten the sushi at M2M a couple of times and it has been very disappointing. Hard rice and tough fish. While it is marked being made on the same day, it literally tastes like it has been sitting in a freezer for a week. On top of that, all of the food, including their sushi, is way overpriced. Many of the employees are unfriendly and not helpful. I will not be going back there again.

Yelp
i love this asian grocery store! has so many options, better and bigger than h-mart. they also have hot foods ready, bakery inside, and upstairs you can order noodles or bento and dine in. has everything you need from meat selection to condiments to yummy snacks.

Yelp
Thanks to M2M, I am in love with Daifuku Korean Pancakes. I can't decide which one is my favorite...Taro, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon or Boba. Who needs to pick just one?
google avatar

Yelp
I purchased a pack of cucumbers, only to realize that the date of expiration was the day of. I did not consume them, but they were rotten - slimy in texture and strange smell.

Yelp
M2M is a smaller version of Hmart that offers an urban convenience of produce, hot meals, snacks, accessories, and other basic grocery needs, right off of Broadway. The prices are a little steep, but you're paying for the convenience. It is right next to the Capitol Hill station! We were able to pickup some basic items, but, honestly, we waited to go to one of the main locations later in the week for a main grocery run. This place can get busy usually around the after work rush, when people are picking up items for dinner. +smaller, urban-style convenience store from Hmart +located next to the Capitol Hill stop
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
M2M Mart's got the perfect location, right by the Capitol Hill station. Stopped here for some snacks and beer. While the prices are a bit high and the aisles are narrow, everything is clean and it's well-stocked.

Yelp
A good variety of Asian Foods, in the middle of Capitol Hill. It's owned by HMart so there's a lot of buying power, management, and technical support. . The produce is fresh. A wide variety. Some are less expensive than the markets. A ready-to-go section has attractive offerings, but I haven't tried it. There is a French (Vietnamese?) bakery inside that will have you trying new flavors. Some of these are of a different style, and that is wonderful. I have a hard time ignoring this. I recommend this place for a potluck, or hostess gift. It's as beautiful as it is delicious. You get dozens of choices of every item--noodles, drinks, sauces, frozen items. It's clean and well-organized. Fun housewares are available as well. Snacks give you an introduction to new tastes. You'll even find European cookies and candies that are sold in Asia. There is never a line to check out and friendly service. My only criticism is that I find more items without pricing than I like. Guys will never ask. Let us buy more. It is like a large convenience store. You can run in, buy what you need, and be out in a minute.

Yelp
What a great Korean store in Capitol Hill located at the light rail station. First off, this location is huge! There is a wide selection of food items including hot items to go. There is also a coffee/pastry shop inside that had great coffee and a wide range of pastries to choose from. There is also a food court upstairs coming soon and I can't wait to try it out once it opens. Overall, this is a great place to shop and the staff are friendly. Definitely will be back and a long time customer.

Yelp
The wife brought home a salmon salad and a pork belly kimchi rice bowl. Both were good, not great. Reasonably priced and would likely get again out of convenience. But again, nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Tripp L.

Yelp
Over priced! Yikes on Sodu! Sales tax should be a crime! Felt monitored because of my color but due to petty crimes I fell victim to the stereotypes.

Yelp
TRIGGER WARNING: DRY RICE AHEAD. C'mon, it's 9:15 in the morning and your sushi dated today already has dry rice. What's it gonna be like by 1:00 or 2:00?

Lita T.

Yelp
Highly recommend to check it out but remember it's a little bit pricey lol other than that it's super cool the food and everything. Oh please don't forget to check the expiration date lol the stockers are so fired about this !!!!

Yelp
A convenient Korean market in the city - Capitol Hill. I can get things here that the U District Hmart doesn't carry. They have a lot of items and things I have to drive out to Hmart Lynnwood to get. The cashier was nice and the workers were helpful with finding items for me that I couldn't find at first. They have a cute bakery and lots of hot bar items. I hope a lot of people come here so they keep this location.

Lestat G.

Yelp
My husband accidentally dropped a drink he was going to buy and this old lady that worked there with short black hair and glasses made a big deal about it as if we just robbed her store. She glared at us the whole time while cleaning it up and we paid for our stuff and left.

Aw H.

Yelp
Good location and large selection of products. The downside is price cheating, they label the product with a lower price but charge you with a higher one. I found 4 out of 8 items like this in my cart and told the cashier, he said " I'm not the one who did this". Very unprofessional and bad service! If you have to shop here, be aware of this and pay attention to the price traps.

Yelp
M2M Mart is a Korean supermarket newly opened in Capitol Hill, Seattle by H Mart. The store offers all the essential items that would be in a H Mart. The produce, seafood, and meat departments aren't as vast as the larger stores found in NY/NJ which caters to the mostly Asian population there. Meats and seafoods are mostly sold packaged. Produce/vegetables were fresh and nicely displayed; only basic items. There is also a large alcohol department displaying a large variety of wine and Soju. Overall, the prices are consistent with Seattle area but a bit pricey compared to the east coast. While I was in the store, I noticed a few seedy clientele coming in only for the alcohol with one of them being caught for shop lifting. The homeless are still a problem in the Seattle area. There is also a small Tous Les Jour inside the store for baked goods.

Yelp
Pretty lame to get followed by security when I've literally been in the store for snacks/drinks at least two days a week for the past 6 months since it's across the street from my workplace. Dude wasn't even discreet about it and when I said "Have a nice day" on my way out his response was a curt "Okay." Which pretty much confirmed my suspicion that he was deliberately following me, outside of catching him watch me enter the store, overtly staring at me from the frozen food isle, and then appearing at the register as I was paying. This follows up a $10 musubi my dumb ass didn't notice had a fried rice tag on it until I got home, looked at the receipt, and realized how much I was charged. I want to like m2m because it is conveniently located, but I won't be returning after this and other small incidents.

Yelp
Ambience. B Service. A Food. A Price. A Found next to entrance to Sound Transit train station in heart of Capitol Hill on Broadway! Across from Dicks burger. Couldn't figure out parking today. There is a garage below building , but it looks like it charges $4 and hour. Don't know if the store validates. Forgot to ask. Newly opened in April 2022. Finally a convenient Asian market in my neighborhood l!! It's a smaller downsized scale of H Marts that are in suburbs, but this store fills all my Asian niche and needs in a pinch. The food court as of July 2022 is not open...can't wait to see what the food court brings! Noodles, Asian veggies, Asian alcohol, Asian curios, fresh food takeaways, meat, seafood, sauces. I'm a FaN!

Yelp
Review is solely for the pork belly rice bowl. 4 star portion (generous) but meat was too tough (2 stars). At $11.99 pre tax the price is mostly right. Would not recommend the bowl though for being tough.

Tom C.

Yelp
Frozen and dry item selections very good. The precooked food selection and cooking below expectations. I sushi rice is not fresh and the chicken and cooked other items not authentic asian. A little dissspointing.

John X.

Yelp
This M2M mart has been going downhill. The hot food options cut their portions (i.e., the corn dogs are 80% bread), the raw meat is often grey and/or placed with fresher meat, and their prices are deceptive. You can look at a label, see a matching brand and product for a price, and the cashier will ring you up at a higher cost if you're not paying attention. When challenged, they'll drag their feet, take a picture of the wrong price tag, and start to give excuses as to why they want to charge you more. All things considered, it's in a convenient location, but the service is pretty deceptive and the quality of groceries is questionable at times.

Lisa M.

Yelp
They often have expired/moldy food. Before you buy anything, check the expiration date. Especially the prepared food area. I told the cashier about the expired food and all she said was, I'll let my manager know and nothing happened. Came back to check if they removed the food that was expired, and they didn't. Can't really trust them to uphold food safety standards at this point.
google avatar

P S.

Yelp
The selection and prices are just OK. The cashiers are usually standoffish and don't greet you or make eye contact (sometimes they fully turn their heads away from you) but they may ask if you need a bag. Have some basic courtesy. Good for convenience and it's very clean though.

Marshall C.

Yelp
I love the options at their deli. Musubis are good. Yummy teriyaki chicken. Also tried the yakisoba. A great affordable spot to grab lunch to go. I'll be back soon!
google avatar

Yuni K.

Yelp
Worst korean food ever. Not Korean style at all. Horrible kimchi fried rice, wings, and chicken teriyaki - all failed to cook right way- just no taste at all. Totally different from normal h mart food

Jim C.

Yelp
Although they were fresh out of fresh basil leaves, little disappointed being an Asian market, but the young lady who helped me was very attentive.
google avatar

Damkee ..

Yelp
While the store itself has good selection, they were also selling expired items. I was there in July, and found that they were selling soy sauce that expires in May (2 months old). It wasn't just one item, but multiple - quite alarming. I was able to find out since I knew how to read the language, but it wouldn't have been as discoverable if you don't know how to read the language on the product. It also didn't help that the item had a sticker over where it indicates item expires on the date below (2022.05.10). I also let the employee in the front store know. If you are shopping here, make sure you take a look at all the expiration dates.

David G.

Yelp
Like a long box of spaghetti with convenient entrances a both ends and a clean interior inside with well presented displays, a welcome change from the discolored warehouse-like floor inn the Japanese one we used to go to. Friendly, helpful and well mannered staff, too.
google avatar

Pratima M.

Yelp
The cutest Asian market that's right by the Cap Hill Link Station -- they have all of the yummiest little snacks (which I love exploring) as well as all of the basics! The layout is definitely a little cramped and basic veggies tend to be more expensive that QFC down the street BUT it's perfect for all the more speciality items you can only find at a Korean mart.
google avatar

Urban L.

Yelp
Fun to browse for something new to try. Plenty of vegetarian and some vegan items. Warm curry croquet at bakery was yummy treat. They have frozen edamame which I haven't been able to find at my usual grocery stores. Spacious brightly lit, self checkout available. PS - there are non-Asian items too. Like rugulech and babka in the cold case.
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
The nicest and cleanest Korean mart that Cap Hill needed! Went in on opening day and everything was super organized and eye catching- I was tempted to buy everything! They have a really fresh selection of Asian fruits and produce, a hot food section, and grab-n-go packaged foods/sides. Lots of frozen foods, noodles and the biggest selection of soju I've seen around here. There's also a Korean bakery inside called Tous Les Jours that has reaaally yummy pastries and cakes. They pretty much had everything that would be on my grocery list and more. The employees were all friendly too. So happy for this location!

Anthony O.

Yelp
M2M mart is H mart's urban/ smaller footprint format. Think Trader Joes as opposed to Safeway. However, they have a much wider selection of fresh produce than the cap hill TJs, as well as a focus on asian goods across the store. At the north end of the store there is a French / asian style bakery with cakes, pastries and coffees. Upstairs there is a food court under construction, though from talking to a staff member, it seems like they are still deciding whether it should be a food court or more shelves. I've been twice now. On a Sunday afternoon when it was pretty busy and the small aisles made it hard to navigate around people. However, it was pretty empty Monday midday. Biggest downside overall is the lack of parking, but otherwise it's great! They are temporarily not accepting EBT / SNAP.
google avatar

Beatris D.

Yelp
Very cool and large market for Asian food, groceries, and hot meals! They also have this suuuper yummy bakery at the entrance closest to the train station! The location is well stocked, maintained and the staff is very nice! I also love the cleanliness of it making it a nice shopping experience!

Francisco A.

Yelp
I frequently shop at this store. Today, a female, morbidly obese middle-aged African-American teller rang me up, she was rude from the get go, never asked me if I wanted my receipt, so I asked for it, since she didn't respond, I asked for it again. ANGRILY she told me I didn't need to yell at her (which I wasn't ) I told her i wasn't being rude, but since she didn't respond I wasn't sure if she had heard me, she then tells me that I am disrespecting her and tells me to "get the F. Out of my store" at this point, gloves off witch, so I told her to "go to hell you crazy witch" ( with a W). There was a younger Asian teller next to her who saw exactly what had transpired, and he looked at me as if acknowledging that she was in the wrong. I understand a lot of crazy people from the area may harass the employees, but I wasn't one of those rude people, I had to defend myself against a RUDE teller. I have never seen her working there before. However, with her bad attitude, hopefully she won't be there next time I go back. Up until today, I had always had good experiences shopping there. I wish management paid closer attention to customer service. That rude teller would be better qualified to work at a High Security Prison!

R. K.

Yelp
They have great lunch food selections, some nice tableware. Produce is consistently bad/old. Good tea selection. Unfortunately, none of the positives outweigh the negative of going there this morning and seeing them detain someone for shoplifting. And by detain, I mean that they had the person on the ground inside the store entrance, while they stood over them yelling at them to empty their pockets and stomped on their knee repeatedly. I would suggest in future that they call the police instead of deliberately trying to cripple someone.

Cameron B.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place before it opened. Overall, it's sauce/packaged food section is decent. They have most things you'll need to cook a wide variety of Korean dishes. Unfortunately, they always have moldy produce. Last week, I wanted some Korean radishes, but a handful of them were slightly moldy, so I had to make the trek to uwajimaya. Previously, I've seen moldy ginger, onions, green onion, and eggplant. I'll make sure to photograph next time I'm here. Also, their meat/eggs/milk are more expensive than uwajimaya/QFC. TLDR; M2M is fine. Don't bet on it for quality produce or affordable meat. If you just need sauce/noodles/packaged food, this is your place.

Sheila D.

Yelp
Rude woman hispanic cashier twice never say thank you! Came there and the tags always wrong!

Joel D.

Yelp
The diverse product selection is great, but the layout is cramped. That wouldn't be so bad, but the hand baskets are absolutely massive. Good luck getting around when it's busy. H-Mart decided to brand this location "m2m" (as in "morning to midnight.") More like "m2ninethirty." Temporary for some reason, one would assume, but it's as if they didn't know what they were getting into opening on Broadway. Speaking of temporary, they are "temporarily" not accepting EBT. No H-Mart, anywhere, takes EBT. That doesn't affect me directly, but let's be real: the store is classist, and the only "poors" that's keeping out are the ones, say, living in MFTE units in the very same building.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Good selection of Asian snacks and pre-made food. Produce looked nice and fresh on the opening day, but 2 weeks later the quality is spotty (wilted lettuce, moldy fruit). Their prices are all over the place: some produce was priced well below other stores in the area, other items are crazy expensive (nearly $8 for a smaller-than-usual bunch of asparagus, eggs and beer 25-50% more than QFC).
google avatar

Rocco P.

Yelp
So glad this finally opened! Love their daily prepared food, plus it's discounted later in the day for such a reasonable price. My new go to for a lot of my grocery staples.

Lee B.

Yelp
It is impossible to know what price things are at this store. Product is put onto shelves in vaguely the correct section, with no regard for tags, nor are tags ever fixed. Some sections of the store will have half the products in the section be completely unpriced. Today, I bought some soy sauce with a tag in front of it for $5.49 that looked to be for the same soy sauce (same brand at least, with no other tags/products from that same soy sauce nearby). When I checked my receipt, I found out that not only did that soy sauce ring up as $7.49, but the cashier actually added a further price adjustment of $3 more on top of that price??? I have absolutely no words for this. Even the worst Walmarts I've been to run their operation so much better than this place.

Jack H.

Yelp
Wanted to update my review as the selection has expanded and it's nice to have a deli that isn't Safeway or QFC on that part of the Hill. Prices are still high but I've been impressed with most of the items sold here. When I went when they opened they didn't have half the fresh prepared items they have now and it makes a big difference.

Denisa D.

Yelp
A lot of things were expired. I bought kimchi in a plastic container. I didn't check at the store if it was sealed which was a mistake. I opened it at home and the paper which was under the lid just came right off. It was supposed to be sealed. It also expires in 4 days. I should have checked the expiration date. How can they be selling 2 pounds of kimchi which expires in 4 DAYS!!! Also the salmon sashimi was definitely not fresh. Most of the things also do not have any tags or prices. I am not sure if I will be coming back.

Michelle P.

Yelp
Please ask for receipt and check your receipt before going out. We were charged for two items that we did not buy or receive. The person behind us was our friend, and he said he did not buy the items either (so it was unlikely that the cashier mistakenly scan the next person's items). The cashier name on the receipt is Kailly.

Meg F.

Yelp
My new favorite grocery store! Everything from their prepared food section is delicious (hot meals and sushi / sashimi) and all their produce is always so fresh!
