Visiting the Ma Rainey House was a true experience—like stepping back in time to connect with the life and legacy of a blues legend. The preserved home and exhibits offer a heartfelt glimpse into her world, allowing you to appreciate not only her music but also the cultural impact she had on the blues and beyond. I especially loved that they highlighted she was educated—an important acknowledgment for a Black woman, especially during her time. It adds even more depth to her story and underscores her trailblazing role in history. It’s both inspiring and humbling to walk through the rooms where history was made. A must-see for music lovers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to feel the spirit of the blues come alive.

This place would've been a great visit but we came at 10am and no one unlocked the doors they sure seen us and heard us there outfront but whomever is running the museum is definitely not doing their job and not allowing people to enjoy this place that's ashame and I will be calling a complaint in my daughters were so upset and excited to see this place and we were there during business hours

I stopped through town on my way to Alabama excited to visit Ma Rainey’s home after recently watching the movie about her life. I was confused about the operating hours listed online and even sent an email the week prior requesting a tour (with no response). No one answers the phone when you call. I was able to capture some pics of the outside but was so disappointed I was unable to tour the home. Recommend calling/emailing weeks in advance and actually speaking with someone to arrange a visit before going as the house is likely run by volunteers who give tours in their spare time. The house is located on a quiet street right off the main road going through town.

I am so happy I came across the Ma Rainey house! Talk about learning about a woman who changed the music industry and society basically! Teresa's informative tour was great and she was super knowledgeable about the local area and history. Highly recommended for everyone who wants to learn some actual history of the area.

Loved this step into the history of this iconic woman. Theresa gave a fantastic tour full of history, though provoking moments, and laughs. This is well worth the time to visit and deeper understand Ma Rainey's legacy.

What a gem! This was the last home of Columbus native and blues legend Ma Rainey and it is packed with stuff from life....Our guide Val was fantastic with a deep knowledge of the subject matter and a personality that will take her far.

Great curator! Everyone needs to go see. They are limiting crowds, and mask wearing is enforced, so be prepared. Teresa is a marvelous curator. I have included a few pictures. If you look closely at the wall paper, you will see the instruments hiding in plain sight.

The house was in excellent condition with historical marker stating the significance of the property. We were greeted and stated we would like to do a tour. There was five in our party and was told the group would be dividend into two tours due to Covid. The docent went back inside and we be waited another 12 minutes and she didn't return even after seeing us preparing to leave. I hate that we were unable to do the tour!!

Yelp
What a great experience! If you are a fan of the Blues, you definitely need to come visit Ma Rainey's House since she is the Mother of the Blues! Due to COVID-19, only 4 people can come in at a time. Teresa gave us an amazing history lesson and tour. They do accept donations. Better to call to make a reservation. So impressed and what an amazing woman and performer she was! Also go to the Porterdale Cemetery where she is buried to pay respect.

Yelp
We visited this Black history museum on a whim. The museum consumes the first floor of the home. It includes many period artifacts including a piano that was found in the home. The docent Teresa was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She walked us through each room and period in Ma Rainey's life. The museum is undergoing some restoration and is limited to four visitors at a time due to COVID safety measures. Then docent and guests must wear a mask and temperature checks are done at entry. There is no fee to visit the museum and donations are encouraged. We thoroughly enjoyed our Black history lesson and hope to return in the future.
