Austin Food Stall P. Thai’s Khao Man Gai Makes the Best Chicken and Rice | Eater Austin

"Tucked in the back of the Hong Kong Supermarket in Quail Creek, P. Thai’s Khao Man Gai — opened this summer by Austin chef Thai Changthong using his mother’s recipes — is a buzzy lunch stall where dishes often sell out. When I visited at 1 p.m. on a Tuesday in late August the casual, supermarket-stall vibe (buzzing fluorescent lights, bar seating, the occasional fragrance from the fish counter) felt upbeat and unpretentious; customers and staff seemed genuinely happy, and because it’s outside central Austin it attracts people serious about food and even off-duty local chefs, making it a great spot for solo dining, though by 1 p.m. items were running low and the restaurant was fairly empty. The tight Thai-style menu has four entrees — fried pork belly, steamed chicken, fried chicken, and a combo of steamed and fried chicken — each served with chicken fat rice and sauces, with the chicken dishes coming with a dynamite consommé; the combo is $18, and specials sometimes include fried chicken livers or crispy chicken skin, but items do sell out (the fried chicken was gone by 1 p.m.). Come for simply great, perfectly executed food with zero pretension — and the bonus opportunity to grab groceries on your lunch break." - Erin Russell

I highly recommend this place. For those would like to try Filipino food, this is the place. The halo-halo is my favorite.

Picked up some pancit, lumpia, and fried rice. It was all very tasty, with the pancit being a highlight. Will definitely be getting food here again.

Nice to have a small Filipino market closer to us. I usually end up having to travel to Tampa or Pinellas to the Asian market. The selection is ok but small...but you have some if your basic staples. Friendly people too Mabuhay and Salamat.

I love shopping here! At first, I visited just to buy the best Boba tea in Hernando County or anywhere in the area, really. But then one day, the owner turned me on to BUTTERFLY PEA FLOWER tea. Everyone in my little household of three is currently facing a cancer diagnosis. Not only did the butterfly pea flower help me a lot, but I also found REAL green tea there that you can brew in a pot. Now that we have discovered that tea bags can contain BILLIONS of microplastics in each bag, these discoveries were amazing. I did manage to find the dried black gogi berries and apricot kernel tea hidden away off the beaten path in Tampa. May, this store's owner, actually referred me there. She knows where some of the best places to buy things are and she is not afraid to share. As someone who is NOT Asian myself, I really appreciate May's expertise. In other grocery stores, like HL Asian Market on US19, it's a bit harder to find folks who communicate so easily in English PLUS are willing to talk and get to know you. I highly recommend this business. I hope they never close. Here, the owners are EXTREMELY knowledgeable.

Under new ownership by the most charming husband & wife duo! Such an awesome array of Asian goods and products can be found here and the Boba is terrific! She offers home made cooking on Saturdays and everything I’ve tried by May has been perfection. It’s an unassuming storefront in a strip mall but don’t let that fool you, everything you could need to cook authentically at home can be bought here
