Game and seafood from the Scottish Highlands elegantly plated in a wood-decked, bi-level restaurant.
"You’ll have to grab a shotgun to get in the door here, but don’t worry – it’s just the door handle, which sets the tone for this restaurant that’s all about the Scottish pursuit of wild food. The menu uses venison and haggis as the basis for some fantastic cooking, and the Veni-Moo burger (a double whammy of venison and beef) is a classic you should try on your first visit. There are also expensive steaks and a whole roast shoulder of lamb for two or more, but you can have a great time with cheaper main dishes, small plates, and side dishes. The basement is much bigger than the ground floor and better in the evening, especially if you’re on a date – which should probably be a second or third outing rather than the opening event. No one’s going to be impressed by how much red meat you can put away, unfortunately." - Richard Ehrlich
"Delivery on-demand to neighbourhoods around Fitzrovia. A Dundee Sour sounds distinctly like the kind of thing Ewan McGregor would drink at the Oscars, and you know what, we’re into it. Scottish spot Mac and Wild are now delivering batched cocktails across the UK. You can find a foraged old fashioned, a wild fizz, a bonnie spritz, and something called a Bobby Burns Manhattan in their online shop. Bonus points if you listen to the entirety of The Proclaimers back-catalogue whilst sipping." - heidi lauth beasley
"Film Pairing:Celeste and Jesse Forever (Amazon) “If you’ve ever been through a confusing break-up, you should watch this film. Because if red wine’s match is cheese, then this film’s match is listening to five solid hours of Robyn whilst dancing. And when I say dancing, I mean, manically weeping. This modern break-up number is about two best mates, who also happen to be a couple in the midst of divorcing each other. There’s romance. There’s comedic heartbreak gold. And there’s an exceptional scene where Rashida Jones drowns her break-up blues in ranch dressing and burgers. Fuck it, do the same. Get involved in the venimoo burger kit from Mac and Wild. The salt from your tears will really make that bearnaise sauce pop.” - HLB" - oliver feldman, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak
"Mac and Wild have been making nationwide deliveries of their butcher’s supplies since early in the pandemic, but their venimoo burger kits are a newer offering. £28 gets you everything you need for four burgers made up of a beef patty, a venison patty, cheese, lettuce, gherkins, two sauces, and some mustard. Order here." - oliver feldman, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak
"Mac and Wild not only serves one of London’s best burgers, it’s also an excellent excuse for your dad to crack out his Braveheart impression. And we all know how happy that makes him. A Scottish restaurant that champions fresh produce from the Highlands, you’ll find everything from truffled mushroom mac and cheese to ‘haggis pops’ to big juicy steaks on their menu. The real star of the show here though is their half-venison, half-beef Venimoo burger that comes covered in a top bearnaise. Tucked behind Oxford Circus on Great Titchfield Street, it’s a great central location for a little pavement dining without being too overwhelmingly busy. Oh, and get the deep fried Mars bar." - heidi lauth beasley
