Hayward: A James Beard Award-Nominated Chef Is Moving Her Restaurant to Carlton, Oregon | Eater Portland

"An incubator-style market in McMinnville where the food operation currently shares back-of-house operations with several other businesses; the owner says she "always have love for the incubator space," but that moving to a standalone restaurant will allow her team to "really stretch" their talents and grow beyond the constraints of the shared setup." - Paolo Bicchieri

It's a great hangout place. Different shops to visit. There is outdoor seating. Honey pie pizza 🍕 is a must try.

Google
Honey Pie Pizza is a great purchase, it tastes great, with beautifully tasty dough - crunchy on the ends softer in the pie section, while it leans towards the thinner side of the dough spectrum- it is soft and a perfect base for your favorite ingredients. Their Greek salad is nicely portioned and has a good variety of flavors. And best of all it is kind on your pocket. We had a great meal and brought left overs for lunch the next day!

Google
Such a great spot! I recall a few more vendors but now a smaller selection and only open on specific days of the week. Although, still a must visit for Alea Bakery & Cafe and Honey Pie Pizza.

The Mac Market is a hidden gem. The building is perfect for work or dinner. Expect a great cocktail menu a mix of small and large plates for dinner. The food from the Kitchen is truly incredible. Not something I would expect to find in this small town. It is easily the best food in McMinnville. Now serving lunch!! Great coffee, baked goods and sandwiches to stay or go. I come here for solo work and meetings during the day time. Stellar produce from Even Pull is available from their coolers, along with local meats and items.

My husband and I had a wonderful experience here. Very friendly vendors with unique & earth-friendly products. Farm to table food, everything we ate was fantastic. Our drinks were made with very clean ingredients and loved the freshly infused flavors. We are looking forward to our next visit.

Google
Run, don't walk, to get a House Party reservation at Mac Market. We had a 5-course meal that was exceptionally tasty with high-quality local ingredients that were sustainably sourced. Chef Kari answered all our questions about unique ingredients and their beautiful prep (fermented honey?!) and Britt gave us much insight about the space and the local farmers who were literally sitting next to us. $85 for 5-courses and reasonably priced wine list too! The food was a perfect mix between vegetable forward and meat-heavy dishes. Any vegetarian would love the experience. We left incredibly full. What a gem in McMinnville. We hope to come back and try some cocktails and shop the farmer's market. Maybe even convince Chef Kari to do a cooking class!

Super cool spot tucked away. Great seating options inside and out. Grabbed some bread from Bakery Bar and a bunch of charcuterie supplies from Wellspent Market. This will be a frequent stop for our family, both mornings and evenings.

Google
Stopped by cause we are in this area and this place looks really cool Love the atmosphere and the space, definitely would be a cool place for small gathering or even intimate wedding! Didn’t buy anything this time but really enjoyed the market they have, a lot of unique local product to choose from Guess I will have to go back on an empty stomach next time

Yelp
This was our second meal at Hayward. Astonishingly good cocktails, food, and service and an amazingly curated wine list. Kudos!

Yelp
We can start with the first impression. A literal 10+. Outside seating. Inside seating up and down stairs. Lights and plants and everything you could want from one place. A couple places to order some food and some cute little places to shop. We went to the Honey Log for some pizza and it was the best pizza I've had in a long time!!! Everything was so delicious. The salad and the pizza!!! Everyone was friendly and service was fast. New to town and Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
Super neat market and has a lovely staff! We were recommended Hayward restaurant for dinner (inside the market) and it was some of the best food on the planet. Get the focaccia and thank me later! So freaking good!

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries on a weekend morning! The staff are always incredibly friendly and welcoming. They have a lot of seating inside and outside, with a nice patio up top with a great view. Dinner is always good, a bit pricey but definitely worthy of a try.

Yelp
What a Hip neo-rustic warehouse barn aren't you Mac? Brilliant concept & atmosphere, lots of open seating upstairs/down, outside patio & sidewalk, sky high ceilings with a huge barn door & garage door to vent the space & overhead heating throughout. Street parking was already busy on a Tuesday 1PM but seems there's several side streets around for a short walk. 2 visits here bc..read on, I'm in love! With few open lunch boxes open on a Mon-Tues in town, Mac's was sold out of most Cafe food, besides sweet pastries and just 3 slices of their take on Detroit style pizza plus a few containers of couscous salad, remained after 1:30PM. Reportedly selling out of some 80 pre-made sammies, it was a huge disappointment as I read their inviting Small Plates-Entrees-Cocktails menus online. This Food NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL 4PM waa@h... so not wanting to miss out, reluctantly settled on the Carolina Gold meat slice, noting neither veggie or meat had red sauce. Detroit Pizza 5/5 Preferring red sauce, & betting on this too brown a slice being ever so dry on an inch thick Focaccia, Ooh were my doubts ever disproved, it was nothing less than INcredible. Crust of golden melted cheese, crisped to edges like a Detroit duh but not brick I suspect but some harder cheese like a Grana/ Parm, therefore not as greasy as a typical Detroit, heaps of, tell yourself 'healthy' olive oil in the crust to make it sing and crunch! ...thinking of you Detroit Slice ever since ;) Btw leftover slices are sold 20% off in the refrigerated case which I promptly purchased after my 2nd visit for dinner. Coffee/Berry Scone 5/5 Excellent cappucino pull of Caravan locally roasted coffee. Berry Scone was dense in a wholesome feel good way (what you tell yourself when you are cheating haha) The baker/s here from Focaccia to sweets c'est par excellence! Dinner Phenomenal 5/5 - Come Often, menu changes about every 2 Wks!! 7/10/22 Returned for Dinner Service starting 4PM Gosh the drive out is just lovely and sooo well worth a spot at Dinner here. Surprisingly the tables were empty everywhere? Where are all the winos in need of calories to soak up the grape juice? They must not know Mac's yet because the food, every flavor profile, so clean, so balanced, precise, you can taste each element, so outstanding! Yes a bit on the spendy side but so worth the creativity, fresh ingredients, and execution! Please Mac's don't lose the cooks delivering this level of plating on the farm fresh goodness you serve! $8 Grilled Chicory 5/5 I had to ask what was in the Calabrian Chile vinaigrette on charred raddichio as I expected some heat but instead got an almost passion fruit, slight citrus, tad bit o'sweetness and fruity Chile flavor here. Hubby wanted to try this dish, loving his heat, but I, hesitant on heat in my salad was just going along. 30 seconds later, I deftly moved the plate right in front of my fork! lol $15 Grilled & Crispy Squid 5/5 Tendrils of crispy squid, the crisp from cornmeal or amarath? alongside tender soft squid ringlets of textural velvet, gorgeous bright green fresh fava beans are a fave, hard to find on menus (sold fresh in the market case too as were the other greens) alongside fat heirlooms in a lush olive lemon basil oil, very yummy. Interestingly couldn't really detect the fermented peppers akin to an Asian chile crisp oil drizzled atop but didn't stop me! The favas and basil tomatoes really stood out more than the squid but the dish needs to be twice the size! $19 Braised Rabbit Pasta 5/5 House fettuccine noodle was cooked perfectly chewy and poor Peter made excellent in a delicately sweet braise not heavily sauced but noteworthy, with bok choy, broccoli and pickled celery which you can't necessarily see at first unlike an in your face primavera, but a definite veggie boost & lightness to this dish, topped with micro greens. Cocktails $13 Coco Club 4/5 Coconut Gin drew me in, with its defined coconut profile but the gin certainly didn't lose it's way, with Lillet Blanc & Lemon her only other partners, this is a long drink but will sit your pants down, it's alcohol forward, no fooling Sis! I'd prefer her a little longer actually, a teeny more sweet without the calories, like some coconut LaCroix fizz or plain/pineapple coconut water if cal-splurging. $14 Corpse Reviver no. 11 5/5 Yep kiss au revoir to the $10 cocktail, long gone but nothing will Revive your faith in the nuances of getting it right with some of the stronger ingredients of absinthe, cointreau & lemon profiles filling your Coupe' than this No 11. It's so perfectly aligned carrying the gin and Lillet along, thank you Bartender, you are brilliant! The Market also hawks local provisions including butchered meat, chocolates, canvas totes, cookbooks and a wall of wine in addition to farm fresh produce. Don't believe my words when I say I am in love with Mac Mkt, hop on your bike, scooter on out, or 4 wheel it, Go Seek! You'll probably find me at a table :)

Yelp
This was part of a celebration for Lunar Chinese New Year. There is a lot of parking all around. For a event well attended the parking circle starts to get large. There are multiple access points to keep the crowd flowing. Really good food inside and a nice permanent store for to go food. Great time walking around getting ideas for the sustainable store and products Love the bar area really good selection of beer and excellent service. It does get a little bottleneck at the entrances as the event grew in size. They are ready for bed weather. Hopefully still growing and more events going on. A good venue

Yelp
Five stars for folks trying to create a cool space for McMinnville locals. As someone who doesn't eat dairy, I was hoping for more dairy-free baked goods and dinners. Driving to Portland for vegan food is the only option, currently. Hope to see something exciting for vegan GF folks in the future. Tips for vegans: No vegan pastry options at bakery bar. They do have oat milk for coffee drinks. Hayward will omit some ingredients in their dishes to accommodate, which is appreciated by folks like me who've been met with judgement for my preferred diet; pizza at Mac Market can be made vegan, as they carry plant-based cheese and meat alternatives.

Yelp
Really cool open space for hanging out, grabbing a bite to eat or drink, shop for sustainable products, or do a little grocery shopping. I've come here a few times for all of the above, but this last in particular I brought my father in law to have coffee and lunch. He thoroughly enjoyed his cuppa and our vegetarian sandwich loaded with veg. I had an Italian sandwich and it had a ton of meat, freshly carved. Everyone who works in this entire market always seems friendly and helpful. If I were to choose a place to come do work or write a novel, this would be the place around the corner to do so.

Yelp
Had a snack platter full of yummy veggie options. Cocktails were good, first time customers on trivia night which was really a kick! Looking forward to returning first Tues in June after renovations are competed.

Yelp
Brilliant! Delicious, innovative food, wonderful cocktails, exceptional service. You really can't go wrong here. Plenty quiet enough to carry on a conversation. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
The gathering place containing two restaurants, gift nook and plenty of seating for friends serves a good need. Hayward is especially precious.

Yelp
We went there on a Saturday night with a group and expected so much more. We ate in the restaurant but frankly wished we had eaten at the pizza place. It was very empty which was surprising since they'd been open 1month. It wasn't a menu for everyone. It was overly ambitious, portions were small and prices were high.

J M.

Yelp
The vibes, food, people are all the best here. We came here for the first time a week ago and couldn't wait to return. It was a hit for the whole family which is rare. We're alas planning when and how often we can go back! As another reviewer said, just go!!

Yelp
Been wanting to come here for awhile, must kept missing it. If so go around 4 as that is when they had dinner. The Red Fork was amazing! This girl doesn't really dog chicken, but that was good chicken! Plus I like that they had Shasta soda. I love Shasta! So many areas to sit and relax and or bring a few people and enjoy the town of Mac. After this I went to a record store and book store that are right next to eachother! Both things I love then decided I wanted nice cup of water with strawberries as it was a hot day.

Yelp
Cute market with Portland prices. There's a restaurant kitchen with rotating food offerings, beer/wine bar, little kiosks with local produce, meats and foodie gifts. Live music and whatnot too. Very open and spacious. Towards the back is a courtyard area that can be reserved for private events. I enjoyed the atmosphere very much and loved that it was off the main drag of McMinnville, so less crowded and more of a locals spot.

Yelp
Delicious coffee's lattes, teas, etc. I got a pumpkin cheesecake muffin that was to die for !big huge open building .fun place to meet with a bunch of friends. Very cool vibe.!

Molly H.

Yelp
The coffee they brew tasted very watered down or a poor brand. Seating was uncomfortable (metal chairs), and the acoustics made it difficult to carry a conversation without yelling. The cost was average. I won't be going back.

Yelp
Unique, world-class creative gourmet food, in a down-to-earth and funky big open happy social space. Fantastic waitstaff- I mean truly exceptional service.

Yelp
Brand new (August 2019) food venue in a cavernous airy structure. All the food we tried was delectable. We came twice during their "soft grand opening" for breakfast and then late lunch. There were different food venders there each time (we sampled from three). There are also coffee venders and a bar set up in what looks like a vintage airstream trailer. There was even a boutique jam vendor. Nice ambiance.

Yelp
We stayed next door to the newly opened mac market on our recent McMinnville stay and were glad to have it near! It is a cute and trendy spot that has a beer and wine bar, a coffee stand, and some cute local goods and produce. They have live music certain nights of the week and at the bar serve all local wines and beers. There is cpr hole and other games and it serves well as a place you can come hang out. There is even a little airstream RV inside that doubles as a a cocktail bar! In all it was a cute and trendy spot that we visited several times. My only critique would be as a "market" we were wishing there was a lot more to shop from (both goods and foods), but I know they just opened so maybe more are on the way soon!

Katrina B.

Yelp
Every. Single. Thing. Steamed buns were perfection. The tasting plate with the various spreads was delicious. Not cheap but totally worth the price. Great set-up. Lots of breathing room.

Yelp
Love this place! Perfect for today's covid environment, big open space with plenty of ventilation and perfectly spaced seating. I enjoyed having a cocktail from High Spirits while I shop for plants. I will be back to try Flour and Fern Bakery and coffee ASSaP!

Yelp
Incredible food, fun atmosphere and the service was perfect. I had the squid mole and it was dreamy.

Yelp
Story in the Oregonian today about Swamp Soda. Took a country drive and showed up at MAC Market where it was advertised for sale. They are having a private event today with tickets sold out. We were refused entry. We explained all we wanted to do was buy a case of Swamp Soda. No dice. They lost a ten second $24 sale. Their loss. We won't support their local business. I totally understand it was a private event but it would have been nice if they had problem solved the sale.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. They have a bit of everything: prepared food which is delicious and creative via Collab Kitchen, a full bar with unique drink options as well as old standards or beer/wine, Even Pull Farm fresh vegetables, local meats and other great offerings (Durant olive oil, Ken and June hazelnuts, Briar Farm cheeses, etc.). I'd highly recommend a visit if you're in the area. It's casual and Covid-safe (wide open space with LOTS of air flow and plenty of room to spread out.

Dave H.

Yelp
Now, I can't be sure if this was just the menu that was chosen or the failure of the kitchen, but six dishes and five solid misses. Much of this may simply be that I find the ingredients chosen unpleasant. Odd flavors. Under cooked beef. A real lack of seasoning.

Kelly S.

Yelp
perfect place to hang out with friends or catch up on a book or school work. all the food is so good!! cant go wrong
google avatar

Yelp
This place features multiple, engaging shops, bars, craft food, coffee bar. None. A fabulous space for community and expression. Upstairs events space and shop stalls. Unique &Van Glorious is the titke I give to the eclectic patio bar from a reclaimed, RV shell. New, rustic, electric and delicious. It was open because it contains many places. Hours on google says closed, but it was definitely open for Sunday "best" coffee bar!!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome food, coffee, drinks, staff, venue. This place is nothing if not groundbreaking for the area. God bless it!

Yelp
Amazing spot in Mac! Tons of Covid-friendly seating, really cool industrial feel, beer, wine, and cocktails (I am currently drinking my way through their list of specials)! The food is delicious, from meals to small bites, even a gluten free bakery is on site! The service is excellent and you're able to keep a tab at both bars and the Colab kitchen, making payment easy. Mac market is a must if you like supporting local businesses and want a place to gather with friends or grab a coffee and get some work done. I would give it ten stars if I could :)
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. Cool vibe with plenty of room to spread out and incredibly attentive and friendly staff. Decent beer choices from PNW craft brewers. Excellently crafted cocktails if that's your thing. Now for the food. Wow. Collab kitchen has literally never disappointed me. I will admit that a few times I've been hesitant to try something because it's not in my normal wheelhouse of food choices, but I've tried anyhow and I'm always pleased. Creative flavorful dishes that rotate on a regular basis. They just added another food cart that has wood fired pizzas, sandwiches and salads and they are off to a tremendous start. Tried a pizza and sandwich and both were delicious. I'm hopeful that they stick around because they are a great addition to the space. When the weather is nice the outdoor space makes for a great option for some fresh air. My only hesitation in posting this is that they will get busier and I will have a hard time getting my "regular" table.

Mary B.

Yelp
What a wonderful discovery! I've seen it a few times and wondered about it. We went yesterday for a snack and a drink and LOVED it! A variety of food businesses under one big roof. Credit card, they hang on to while you are visiting. You can go to any of the vendors and your card is on hand. An additional WONDERFUL offer - for $25 you can have a brick painted on the outside walls. You design, vendor does the painting. We designed "C-19 TOGETHER". Vendor painted it as we were enjoying ourselves inside. $25 and you also get a free drink. We will be going back. There is music too, we want to see that. Families, pets outside, kids coloring...everyone was having a nice casual outing. Oh, I forgot - food was GREAT, staff was GREAT!
