Macao Trading Co. - Review - Tribeca - New York - The Infatuation

"Look for the red lantern," instructs the Macao Trading Co. website. This is how you will know you have reached your destination - the Portuguese colony of Macao circa 1952, "a fugitive's heaven from which there is no turning back." Awesome. We're apparently having dinner at Universal Studios tonight. Last week, we went out on an Immaculate Infatuation blind date. A mutual friend introduced us to two food enthusiasts with whom we share similar tastes and interests, Miss Info and Heather Park. Team Infatuation suggested Macao Trading Co. for dinner based on some recent hype and the promise of an interesting "Chinese meets Portuguese" meal. A Thursday dinner went in the books and we hit the town feeling it. We met our partners in crime at the bar, hit it off immediately, and sat down at our table ready to get into some serious eating. This review wrote itself so fast; I think I have enough material to make it a three part series. First of all, Macao is a huge scene...everyone in the house is either on an early in the game date, or starting off their night before they hit Pink Elephant. Second, the place is essentially a theme restaurant. There must have been a yard sale after the last Indiana Jones movie and the owners of Macao cleaned out every prop that Planet Hollywood didn't already scoop up. I honestly wouldn't have been surprised to see a monkey in a shriner's hat come out and bus the table. The food and service were right about on par with a downtown Ruby Foo's. We ordered a lot from the menu, many of the dishes suggested by our waiter, and nearly everything was overcooked, over seasoned, and overrated. The shining stars from our meal were the chicken dumplings, and you can get five of those for a dollar a few blocks north on Canal Street. Moral of the story? Next time we let our new friends pick the restaurant. RESERVE A TABLE WITH RESERVE A TABLE Food Rundown Manila Clams – Portuguese Style This is actually a pretty good dish, and word must have spread quickly since they were out of it by about 9:45pm the night we were there. Small clams in a spicy broth with chorizo sausage, that's a tough combo to hate on. Meatballs – Portuguese Style These are lamb meatballs inexplicably filled with a large amount of white cheese. The cheese is unnecessary and unappetizing. I imagine the thought process went something like "hey, it worked for stuffed crust pizza...yep let's do it". Olive Oil Poached Octopus This dish somehow lacks flavor. Aside from the texture, the potato in the dish and the octopus taste exactly the same. Chicken Dumplings Our blue ribbon winner for the night, but honestly you can't screw these up and still be open for business, and you shouldn't be charging nine dollars for four of them. Peking Style Pork Ribs I have a hard time believing these ribs come from a pig and not a wooly mammoth. Maybe the biggest pork ribs I've seen, and it took an hour to eat one. Messy and unimpressive. Ants Climbing The Tree This is a large serving of glass noodles with minced pork. It could have been much better, but the noodles were overcooked and mushy. Bacalao Fried Rice Almost a really good dish, but the Bacalao (salt cod) wass way too salty, even for the taste buds of Miss Info and Heather Park who have eaten their way through every ethnic food in this city. Swing and a miss." - Chris Stang

I loved the atmosphere. The modern dimlit take on a testing company office transported me far away. The music could be quieter though. The food was a bit uneven. I really liked the ants climbing the wall because of their intense flavor and slightly spice seasoning, and the coquettes were a second favorite. The staff was something else, very tender and delicious when served rare. The chicken and pork dumplings were unfortunately dry inside, and the market vegetable salad had too much lettuce. The portion sizes are good to share many dishes even in a small party. That means, they are not particularly big.

Loved this spot in Tribeca! I’m all about a fun food experience - not just great dishes, but the whole vibe - music, ambiance, service. This place really has character. It’s a Portuguese-Chinese concept with a menu with lots of seafood options and a pretty good cocktail list. Everything we ordered was great, but the standout for me was the steamed mussels - the coconut broth was so flavorful and delicious. Also, definitely recommend getting the BBQ short ribs with the vegetable rice. They compliment each other so well, though the rice lacked sauce. I didn’t get a chance to try their famous lobster noodles, but this is why I’m coming back. Perfect spot for a night out with friends or a fun date - just a heads-up, the music can be loud.

Google
Food, service and atmosphere are great. I love decorations so much, pretty cool design and idea. When it comes to noodles, I found the minced pork one better than the lobster one, expected the lobster to have more of a buttery flavor. Dumplings are better steamed than fried, fried it just tastes like an empanada. The salad is also really good, recommend to order. I didn’t try the croquettes as I don’t like croquettes, but the table said they were really good. Skirt steak is very tender and lots of flavor, not your regular skirt steak. The drinks are good as well. I recommend the place.

Beautiful design and ambiance. Tasty food with a menu that delights rather than overwhelms. Excellent service and interesting drinks. Would recommend to a friend for sure

Google
The restaurant offers a really unique menu (both food and cocktails). Upon being seated, I was greeted right away and put my order in pretty quickly. Everything was fantastic! The charred octopus and African chicken were great and looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu.

Had a PHENOMENAL experience with a few girlfriends. 10s across the board: drinks, food, vibe, service. Make sure to ask to be seated in Josh’s section. He was fantastic and made the experience all the more special by being very knowledgeable about the menu, creative about cocktail options, and very attentive throughout the night. We will be back!

Google
Had a lovely experience here! The vibes were great, and the service from Diego was fantastic. I enjoyed the Hakka noodles and ribs, and their cocktail list is solid too (had something with berries in it). Such a cute spot with a DJ downstairs! Would definitely come back.

Google
Macao Trading Company oozes mood and mystery—the kind of place that feels like a secret you’re lucky to know. Dim lights, Old Shanghai decor, and just the right amount of lighting. I like my cocktails gin-forward, and I felt seen. The bartender delivered something crisp, complex, and perfectly balanced with a cherry blossom vermouth. The food was just as thoughtful—bold, shareable, and packed with flavor. Perfect for a sultry date or a late-night escape. Macao isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a whole damn vibe.

Yelp
After 3-years, I came to this place to see if it was just as good as it was before. And to no surprise. I would still suggest this place for a one-of-a-kind experience, maybe I'm biased because I'm Portuguese ;-) Try the house noodles, the skirt steak, the dumplings and greens - salad. All amazing flavors. Great for a first date - for all those looking for a bit more on the romantic side too. Dark and mysterious feel.

Yelp
I don't give 5 stars lightly, so trust me when I say this place earned it for the food. The service was fantastic too, our water glasses were never empty and the space is nicely decorated, very cool interior (wooden with high ceilings and a balcony area, looks like a fancy trading post) complete with a massive bar. The food knocked our socks off. The only thing that was good but not great was the shrimp and scallion dumplings. Again, they were tasty and a decent size (4 per order, two big bites per dumpling), but compared to the other dishes they just didn't hold up since the entrees were so unbelievable amazing. As a table of two, we ordered the African chicken for one (you can order for one or two), the duck, the lobster noodles and a side of the sichuan eggplant. We really enjoyed the eggplant, but the 3 entrees were the stars. The chicken had tons of flavor and great texture. The slaw underneath the chicken was really tasty too. The duck was delicious and paired really well with the cucumber and mango. The lobster noodles are arguably the best lobster noodles we have had (and we are no strangers to lobster noodles). Absolutely perfectly cooked lobster (you get two small tails) coupled with a chili beurre blanc. It is just divine. For a regular eater, the lobster noodles would be a decent entree, but if you are hungry or like to eat, it is not sufficient on its own. It was a really incredible meal, so much so that we already have a reservation to go back next month. The prices are not cheap, but for the quality of the food it is worth the splurge.

Yelp
Such a fun romantic place to go for a date night! Good: - The lobster noodles were amazing! I was blown away since the noodles were so tasty and chewy and also the sauce had so much flavor The lobster meat was tender and savory - The dessert was so good the donuts were flakey and chewy and adding on the condensed milk was nice - Very solid ambiance, dimly lit and private booths to eat Bad: - The place is pretty expensive! - Took a long time to flag down waiters and get them to take our orders - nice servers though Overall enjoyed the experience here and would come again! I liked he decorations mostly and the way it crafted an experience

Yelp
Macao is always a solid choice. The ambiance, food and cocktails are always sublime! Bartenders are well versed on their spirits and service is great. I dearly miss their sister bar Belle Reve, but glad to see Macao still alive and kicking. The ribs are always a solid choice and make sure to try the malasades for dessert!

Yelp
Staff was a delight and they made my friends' and my last meal in New York a great experience! Love the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant also. The outside dining was also well decorated. Since we were visiting, we heard good things about this place. We had a party of 6 and made a reservation for 6 people in advance. I mistakenly reserved on the wrong day and called in to update it with no problems. We also were celebrating my bachelorette party and the drinks were definitely a hit for me. I didn't realize there's happy hour on a Sunday either but that's mainly for bar seating -- will remember for next time! Must get was the crispy fried fish, calamari, and truffle croquettes for us! Something about the fish in NY is just amazingggg.

Yelp
I give this particular bar the highest possible score! Our bartender, Ratko, puts so much conscious effort into every drink he makes, and that effort makes a difference! My friends and I had some of the best, most perfectly balanced drinks we've ever had. Our recommendation: come on a Sunday or day when things are quiet, so you can get his full attention and aren't crowded out! I ordered the drunken dragon milk and the antiquado, then had a drink of Ratko's choosing and followup up that by asking him to Make his favorite drink (Spicy Mezcal Margarita) - and all were absolutely fantastic, and worthy of highest marks!

Yelp
Very good restaurant. The decor is beautiful, it's very dark and moody. All the food that we ate was tasty. I would definitely return.

Yelp
Adorable ambiance, and the food is so flavorful!!! 10/10 recommend. Staying at the Roxy Hotel down the street and found this based on the reviews and they are correct, it's the perfect little gem! Great food, service and ambiance all around!

Yelp
I came here for the bar, which is downstairs. The space was super hot as the AC was barely keeping the space cool. My friends and I ended up going back upstairs because it was getting uncomfortable from the humidity and heat on a summer night. We decided to get some food when we found out the kitchen was still open. There were a lot of empty tables, so it was strange when a waiter asked us to move elsewhere because it was reserved. Why is someone reserving a table to eat at 1am and why couldn't they take any other table in the entire space? It was completely empty, but we moved over anyways. In the end, we decided to not even eat there as the vibes just weren't right.

Yelp
Macao Trading Company is a Chinese-Portuguese fusion restaurant set in an old gambling parlor in SoHo. We came for a midweek dinner and enjoyed a family-style meal. We started off with some stellar cocktails, calamari, shrimp and scallion dumplings, and char siu bbq baby back ribs. All the starters were amazing but the ribs will have us going back just to have them again. For entrees we had the African chicken for two smothered in creamy peanut curry sauce and piri piri as well as the incredible lobster noodles topped with lobster tail. Both entrees were fantastic and justified the somewhat eye watering price tags. For dessert we had the malasadas, mini Portuguese donuts, with dulce de leche and yuzu anglaise and chocolate mousse tart special. Macao Trading Company is a great special occasion date venue or place to sit at the bar and enjoy some phenomenal cocktails

Yelp
The bartender, Ratko, from Monte Negro, was incredible and had a wonderful attitude. The staff was fantastic, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the bar was really welcoming.

Yelp
TLDR: Dim lighting, stellar service, romantic vibes, a bit pricey, but delicious authentic Asian cuisine! 10/10 would recommend for any casual or semi formal dining. Highly suggest the ribs! Super crispy, flavorful, and make sure you eat it with the spring onion. The dumplings were harder than I expected but worth the price. I don't recommend the lobster noodles - they lacked so much flavor, we had to ask for house sauce to fix it... Nevertheless, the service was impressive, the bathroom was super clean, and the table decor was super romantic!

Yelp
The food/drinks: Generally yum! I recommend any of the noodle dishes and the duck breast. The octopus was good but a very small serving. I thought the calamari was okay, could probably skip. The drinks were decent. Strong and a lot of stirred options. I like a more refreshing shaken drink and didn't find one that I really liked. The vibe: Lovely long table booths throughout the restaurant that are great for large groups. Didn't feel squished or anything. On a Friday night (around 8pm) I'd say the restaurant was around 60% full, and you'd probably be okay coming in without a reservation. The service: Really great! Server was attentive but not hovering, knew a lot about the menu, and overall had a lovely attitude. Food and drinks all came out fast. Would go again! A great date night and hangout spot.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my time here. I came for date dinner and the ambiance/lighting is perfect for an intimate night of good conversation with your romantic partner. The server was great and he made it clear that he knew how the dishes were served and prepared by the way he described the ingredients. We ordered the steamed dumplings, ribs, and lobster noodles. I had these dumplings on a random summer night 2 years ago and never forgot about them since. So I had to come back for more. Their dumplings are amazing, and their ribs are to die for. I wasn't the biggest fan of the lobster noodles, maybe I'm just not a lobster guy. However, I know that they serve quality dishes and the next time I come I'll probably try to hoisin noodles. Loved my night here overall. Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 5/5

Yelp
Fantastic service! The atmosphere is fantastic. Excellent bar-friendly setting. Ratko, the bartender from Monte Negro, had an incredible personality and was truly remarkable.

Yelp
3.8 stars is crazy y'all need to stay of the weeeeeeed!! Macao Trading Co is my gold standard for Asian fusion in nyc. It was my 2nd home when I was subleasing in Tribeca, damn I miss it. Maybe I should call............. For you jocks who didn't pay attention in school, Macao is an autonomous region on the south coast of China which has become known as "Las Vegas as the East." So, it makes sense that the restaurant takes its inspiration from the brothels and opium dens of old 1930s Macao...which is maybe why it's REALLY hard to find on the initial walk by lmaaooo. The first time we came we just kept walking right by it because it is so discrete. Other times I've been, they have the neon sign lit up outside which was much appreciated. I'm deep in a google search rn about Macao (the place) and the more I read about it the more I want to go. Macao was a Portuguese territory until 1999?? Few things fascinate me like a good mixing of vastly different cultures. Okay sorry- back to the restaurant. I think I just have a gnarly undiagnosed case of ADHD sometimes hehe. Upon entry, you feel as though you are walking into an extremely high end opium den ahahahah. They almost have to make a new kind of funny "I take myself way too seriously" kind of architecture name. Let me take a crack at this... *cracks knuckles* ...I'm going to call this Post-Renaissance Pre-Neoclassical Mid-Century Modern Opium Den. Yeah that's the one ahahah. The food here blows me away EVERY time. We got a dozen oysters, fried shrimp dumplings, bacon and shrimp fried rice, Hakka noodles, and the grilled skirt steak. Normally I pick one dish to really highlight but I need to go in here: That green sauce they pair with the Oysters - TO DIE FOR. The shrimp dumplings are elite, with a perfect crunch on the shell but they come hot af so be careful, head on a swivel always. The Bacon and Shrimp fried rice changed my life. Hakka noodles are near perfect, barring the fact I wish there were more noodles...the plate is a bit too vegetable dominant. Skirt Steak Medium rare with an IDEAL char on the outside. Man I'm getting hungry now smh. I promise you won't regret a trip to this Post-Renaissance Pre-Neoclassical Mid-Century Modern Opium Den. THANK YOU MACAO I'LL SEE YOU SOON (EYE EMOJI)! Yelp
What an amazing experience at Macao. I had seen so many great reviews at this restaurant, both for the food and the ambience. There was a bouncer at the door checking IDs which was a little odd for a restaurant but I guess it's not the best area on a Saturday night. We stopped in for dinner with a group of 6 for a stag night. Our server was Liv and she was amazing, we'll revisit her later in this review. The menu offerings for food and beverages were both extensive and appealing from top to bottom. There weren't many options we didn't intrigue us, and to that effect, there weren't many dishes that we didn't order. Suffice to say, we ordered everything. Appetizers- Dumplings - chicken/pork belly was perfectly juicy and salty with the added fat from the pork belly. Shrimp and scallion was a classic. We opted for the fried option for both, which meant deep fried rather than pan fried. I would have preferred the steamed. Mushroom and truffle croquettes - the most decadent croquette. Perfect golden brown delicious on the outside, luscious and creamy on the inside. Calamari - good fry, nice variety of squid pieces Charred Octopus - tender on the inside, charred on the outside with a funky tangy salty salsa verde and black vinegar sauce Mussels - the broth and the pea shoots were the star of this dish for me. mussels were a nice accompaniment Noodles/Rice- Lobster noodles - this was as decadent of a dish as the croquettes. the combination if lobster and beurre blanc was one I didn't know I needed in a noodle dish. Glass noodles - tough to get everything mixed together with the glass noodles a little overcooked but all the components were delicious and had a nice spice to the dish. Bacon/shrimp fried rice - great side dish. classic fried rice dish Entrees- African chicken - juicy tender half chicken, resembles a classic piri piri chicken with an east asian twist Duck breast - arguably the odd dish out of the menu selection but who doesn't love a perfectly seared duck breast. Part of me wished this was served like a peking duck with a homemade pancake on the side but that probably wouldn't fit this setting. Crispy whole fish - what a fun part of the dining experience. Our server Liv cleaned the fish table-side for service. She clearly had practice because the bones ended up bare and the fillets came out flawless. Cocktails- Mah Jong - great twist on the classic Manhattan cocktail. Probably my favorite of the night Bashful maiden - another twist on a French gimlet. A little sweet but dangerously tasty La Nora - half the table ordered one but everyone found this a little too spicy. very tantalizing green color to the drink Sweet Jane - probably the sweetest drink on the menu but the most popular with the group. Probably because you don't realize the tequila pour at all. The pineapple slice was a nice garnish and I love a good shaken cocktail over ice pebbles. Macao espresso martini - subtle spin on the classic staple. absolutely end your meal with one of these if you're a fan of the classic espresso martini. they also do a classic espresso martini if you prefer

Yelp
Bad experience than before .the service was terrible the server elena very rude .the ambient is ok.

Yelp
Came here when I was in NYC for my bday and this place was AMAZING! The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed the calamari and oysters for an appetizer-the oysters were delicious and fresh and the calamari crispy and well seasoned. The crispy whole fish was the best I've ever had, and my husband ate every last bite of the African chicken. Drinks were really good and our server had great recommendations. Will definitely come back!

Mike B.

Yelp
There's a bit of pretentiousness to the bar program. If your schtick is to "free pour" your staff should be trained on how to do so and to make sure cocktails are properly balanced. On a slow Sunday night I called a classic daiquiri which is basically the "bartenders omelette". After 3-4 straw tests I got my cocktail which was painfully acidic. This raises concerns more for the fact that the bartender tasted the cocktail and thought that it was good. It's so much easier and cost effective to jigger a cocktail to ensure consistency. The show isn't worth it when it doesn't taste good, especially for $65 before tax and tip for 3 cocktails.

Yelp
Literally was walking by and heard noise coming from the inside and said I want to go in here lol. Good decision , I'm glad I did . It was busy bc they were showing the Super Bowl. The space is dark and ancient in a cool way. My bartender was amazing, tall guy lol. Now for food I ordered the shrimp and scallion dumplings . Listen to this you can get your dumplings steamed or fried. I chose fried. They were so yummy and fresh, they came with bomb dipping sauce. The Macanese lobster noodle was my choice for an entree . Best choice a girl could make. Those noodles were so good. They had a buttery taste to them with a kick so so good! At the end of my dining experience the bartender gave me a shot of idk what but thanks! I enjoyed myself and I'm going back to try the rest of the menu.

Andrea S.

Yelp
The ambiance is immersive with elaborate decorated. There's bar seating and also regular tables. We sat across from the bar and ordered the appetizer specials, truffle croquettes, char siu ribs, and calamari. We also had crispy fish as a main, which had a sour but good sauce.
google avatar

Yelp
The inside and the ambience is perfect for the holiday season. The holiday lights + the wood creates a wonderful ambience. The service was very excellent everyone is super kind and attentive. The dish I really enjoyed was the pan seared duck. I appreciate all of the colorful ingredients and it went well with the duck. The mangos and cucumbers around the duck was refreshing. The ants marching noodle dish was ok, not my favorite by taste. It looked the way it's supposed to be, a little overly greasy and a bit flavorless in my opinion. The mocktail I had was very refreshing and fruity.

Yelp
I was in the area and stopped by because I was hungry around 1am. The ribs were good but I wish I had some white rice lol. Shout out to Steffie to made my experience very memorable. I will definitely come back. They were playing 90s music at the time and had a DJ on a Thursday night. Check it out if you are in the area.

Yelp
Food - flavors dancing around in my mouth! So tasty and unique mixtures of seasonings Service - Amazing! Prompt, with a smile and very attentive Ambiance was super sexy and dark and moody! Great for a date, with a group for drinks and after work dinner or weekend vibes! Very trendy but low key spot! Truly a gem! I came here many years ago and it's still holding up amazing service and food!

Yelp
my favorite bar we went to! The drinks were so good & the bartender was probably the best I've ran across! + we were able to meet some fellow NY'ers. There is also a downstairs that has a DJ & dancing. The ambiance is unmatched & def a vibe!

Yelp
When we were first greeted at the hostess stand, I felt the hostess had a bad attitude and make me feel very uncomfortable. When I check-in early for my reservation at 630pm, I said to the hostess that i would like to have a drink in the bar before dinner. She said, "You should not have a drink at the bar. We want your table back by 830pm." How can be the hostess make customers feel so uncomfortable, unwelcome, and have an unpleasant experience in less than a minute that I'm in the restaurant. Food and service is good, but the restaurant is pricey and the food wasn't really special. I can't say more. Because of the hostess experience, I just want to get out as soon as my dinner finish.

Yelp
Delicious meal and exciting experience at Macao. Came here with a friend for dinner, everything was exceptional! We loved our meal---service was outstanding. Shout out to all of the service staff, including our waitress and additional servers making sure our water was always filled and our coats were checked. We felt so taken care of! This place is definitely a scene---the bar gets packed and there are lots of groups who are going out/celebrating a special occasion. Despite that, they did a great job of making the experience intimate and special for the two of us. The food IS BOMB. We ordered a few apps to share and the branzino and lobster pasta- YUM. Great portions and flavor. Highly recommend---can't wait to go back!

Yelp
My friend and I chose this restaurant for the launch of a small group dinner series we are hosting, and initially it checked all of our boxes. The ambience was slightly mysterious, the playlist was great and their cocktail list was varied. We were seated downstairs in the lounge area which was perfect for our party even though the table was a little tight at times. At the beginning of our dining experience, our server, Helen started off attentive but that changed once initial orders were taken and the first round of cocktails were given. Helen did not periodically check in on us throughout our dining experience. The other serving staff were attentive even though she was not and definitely picked up her slack. Helen mistook our appetizer order and gave us an order of shrimp dumplings that we did not order, and at the end of our dine when one of party members ended up swapping out a dish and noticed the unswapped dish was still on the bill, Helen had no problem insinuating that the party member was being wasteful by expecting the meal she swapped to be removed. Was not accurately recording our orders and bringing out an extra dish not wasteful as well? Now, I understand dishes can't always be removed from bills, even when they are virtually untouched, but arguing with a patron over it is just poor customer service. Insinuating that they are wasteful is also in poor taste as well. If your policy is that you do not swap out dishes, then clearly articulate that to the patron during the initial ask. We spent a good amount of money during that evening and that moment coupled with the lack of attentiveness during the dinner unfortunately will be more memorable than their food options. The good in terms of food? The chicken and pork belly dumplings are great - fried or steamed - they're great appetizers. The ribs also have a nice glaze and are cooked to perfection. The calamari and their noodle dishes didn't really have a depth of flavor, only spice. And just so there's no confusion, their pan seared duck dish is actually served cold and while a nice follow up after a filling appetizer like the dumplings or the ribs, it just wasn't as flavorful as it could've been. I'd like to give Macao another chance with a different server but I think this is definitely an establishment where you need to stick to a couple of staple items and try not to get too adventurous with their menu options. Once you find something that you like there, stick with it.

Yelp
Had a great night here catching up with a friend. The interior of this place really sets the mood and the food and staff were amazing! Shoutout to David for making one of the best drinks I've had in a really long time (Ciao Rizo). For food, we shared the Mushroom and Truffle Croquettes, Hoisin Hakka Noodles, and Chicken and Pork Belly Dumplings. It was plenty of food to share between 2 people. I would recommend everything we ordered because it was delicious, but the Mushroom and Truffle Croquettes had to be the best croquettes I've ever had in my life... and I've had many. I would highly recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
I am obsessed with the ambiance here. Have been meaning to try it for a while!! The service was great! My server was great and super helpful with recommendations. I however, found the drinks to taste very light and bland for the price ($21 per drink). The food were very flavorful! I love the mini truffle croquettes and skirt steak!!!! It does get pretty busy despite coming on a weekday night, so I would make a reservation or come in early 5pm!!!!

Yelp
What a cool place! I love Fusion cuisine, and this one hits all the spots. Went for a birthday dinner, and we ordered a ton of dishes. Absolutely nothing that is didn't like here! Cozy dim lighting with cool decor, really fun staff. Very nice!

Yelp
Last minute dinner reservation was desperately needed while my wife and I were visiting NYC from LA, and since Macao Trading Company was walking distance from our hotel we decided to give it a whirl. The food was pretty decent overall, and the vibration of the place was certainly happening. But when it came to our drink service things just didn't pan out well AT ALL. We almost always revert to having martinis and placed our order for dry martinis with olives - so when they showed up with a twist instead we mentioned there must be a mistake. The drink server didn't apologize or say anything, he simply walked away with a grimace on his face. We figured he may just have been having a bad day or was mad at the order getting screwed up, but when he returned with our new drinks he continued to act super put out and annoyed with us. To add insult to injury, these must have been the most watery martinis that my wife and I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. I'm sure some of you reading this might find this to be a tad nit-picky, but considering the price point and the fact that cocktails/spirits are a focal point of the menu I felt quite let down. With so many other options in NYC to choose from, it's unlikely I will return.

Yelp
Place is mid. Legit overpriced as hell. $24 drinks with hardly any alcohol. Food was ok? Not really amazing in any way.

Yelp
Ordered: Shrimp & Scallion Dumplings (~$15 each): 1 fried & 1 steamed Dozen Oysters (~$48): with leche de tigre mignonette Mushroom Croquettes (~$16): with gruyere and parmesan Sichuan Eggplant (~$15): with hoisin Baby Bok Choy (~$14): with garlic Fried Rice (~$15): with shrimp Grilled Skirt Steak (~$36): bok choy, crispy potatoes Macanese Lobster Noodles (~$48): shanghai noodles, kale, chili beurre blanc Aya's take: Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the rustic and dim ambiance. It's quiet in here; great for intimate dinners but we can by as a party of 7. Macao blends Chinese & Portuguese flavors and although I love that combination, the entrees could have used more flavor. The appetizers were all delicious! From the freshness of the oysters to the crunchiness & softness of the croquettes to the deliciously fried dumplings (way better than the steamed). Their Fried Rice is so simple yet tasty. And the Sichuan Eggplant is an absolute must! The Macao Lobster Noodles had 2 lobster tails but the noodles lacked flavor and were a bit too soupy for my liking. The Grilled Skirt Steak was cooked to a nice medium and the crispy potatoes complemented it so well. However, the bok choy wasn't seasoned (unlike the side which had a garlic flavor). It was a good try; I would stick to a variety of appetizers if you find yourself here!

Yelp
It was my wife's birthday, and we treated ourselves to a spa and went to one of our go-to places which is Macao Trading Company. Wow, how the place has dropped down overall. The pros: lovely waitress, excellent drinks The Cons: The management/hostess seated us in the basement claiming there were no available seats which was not true for there were plenty of empty tables (we had reservations). When we got downstairs, it was dead. That said, It was a lovely ambiance so we were okay with it. That changed immediately once we were seated. Management thought it a great idea to sit a party of 4 (rowdy guys who were already drunk) directly next to us. To be clear, the 4 men did nothing wrong, however, it was awkward and uncomfortable to cram them next to us when the area was so empty. The food was lackluster at best. The Dumplings were just salty. My wife's lobster noodles were tougher than a Brillo pad. My burger was uneventful, with fries that were just oily and tasteless. This was disappointing. The menu overall was not daring as it once was and it no longer felt like a fine restaurant but rather a club. I guess the restaurant is trying to have it both ways? Well, guess what, sadly, it's the last time they are getting my money.

Yelp
Went here for dinner with a group of 5 on a Friday. We were about 5 min late for our reservation and the rest of our party arrived about 45 min late. The hostesses were extremely polite and understanding of the situation. My boyfriend and I got some drinks at the bar while we waited. I had the west end- if you like lemon flavored drinks I highly recommend this one. It's very light and not too sweet. We got some steamed dumpling for the table- the dipping sauces are delicious and different for each type of dumpling. The portions are generous, I got the Hakka noodles and couldn't even finish the entire bowl. The noodles had the perfect amount of chew. The food came out very quickly which we appreciated. Overall great service, polite staff and fantastic ambiance. The perfect place for a group outing or a date night.

Yelp
Macao definitely punches above its weight class. The location is unassuming and when you step inside the vibe is akin to waiting in line for a jungle cruise at Disneyland, but the food is excellent and reasonably priced. Give this place a shot!

Yelp
This was my 2nd time dining here - first time was for a friends birthday and it was great! 2nd time the food was SO salty and probably a lot of MSG in it. The cocktails are good but on the pricey side - $20+ for one cocktail. For the little food we ordered, the bill was around $224 with tip. I was looking forward to dining here, but my opinion has changed since the last time. Other spots will have better food, although the ambiance here is nice!

Yelp
Been meaning to come here for far too long. One look at the menu and you just know the food will be good when you see spice, noodles and seafood on it. I finally got to come here on a busy night with a girlfriend. We didn't have any reservations but we were seated immediately albeit in their space downstairs. It's much smaller and less-sceney than the space upstairs but when you're hungry and don't want to wait an hour for a table, this is your best bet. Also, if you are single and looking to meet some finance bros, forget the dating apps and just hang at the bar at Macao trading co. The two seater tables are tiny, the mood lighting is too dark, we needed our phones for the menu. We relied heavily on the one small flickering candle on the table to eat our meal. It's basically you know, your typical New York dining scene at a super popular restaurant somewhere downtown on a Friday night. But now, onto the food. It's everything I had imagined it would be. We had the shrimp and scallion dumplings and the mushroom and truffle croquettes to begin with. We got the crispy whole fish and hoisin Hakka noodles from the entrees. The croquettes were forgettable. I literally don't remember how it tasted but we didn't have high expectations from it anyway. The dumplings were great although I wouldn't come back here for that specifically because I mean it's New York City. There are a ton of amazing dumpling places in the city. The crispy whole fish was the piece de resistance. It was spectacular! The noodles went great with it. I got the Pimm's cup, unorthodox I know for this time of the year but that's just me. I also drink white wine and rose in the winter, so sue me! The drinks are decent. It's a really great place overall! Enjoy your visit here!

Yelp
Beautiful setting and great for happy hours after work. The food is not close to Asian so it was a bit underwhelming. Steamed fish was delicious but I'd say overpriced.

Yelp
Truly shocking attitude from the staff. We were hosting friends out of town and decided to take them for a post brunch cocktail at a spot nearby (Macao). It was mostly empty and yet the host refused to seat us and proceeded to give us a very hostile and negative attitude. Not sure if they were homophobic or if there was another reason for the prejudice but it was quite appalling at a place I used to remember as fairly classy. I would welcome a conversation with the management about the experience.

Yelp
We had a fantastic dinner here. From the host, to our wonderful server Jessie, to the bar tenders and beyond, we had the absolute best welcoming crew. The ambiance was spectacular; fun and moody. The food to die for. We had the dumplings, croquettes, ants on a log, skirt steak, duck, and malasadas. Highly recommend all of it.

Yelp
We popped in here on a whim, just looking to grab a cocktail during our evening tour of Manhattan. What a cool place, with vibes of an Irish American Pub but globally inspired food and drink. The layout of the restaurant bar had a lot of great energy, and while the decor was cluttered it added to the energy. The specialty drink menu was excellent. We really enjoyed our cocktails and the prices were reasonable for the location although a bit higher than what we are looking to spend for a quick drink. The bar was really busy with most guests in their twenties and 30s and fairly casually dressed. The bartender was super friendly although not fast. He was really busy, so we didn't get stressed. Next time we're by here, we'll probably have appetizers or dinner.

Yelp
Both fish dishes (crispy whole, steamed) I've tried here are hands down the best fish texture I've had anywhere so far

Yelp
Macao Trading Company is a okay place to eat, but left more to be desired. I came here for dinner. The ambiance was cool, but seating was too crammed and uncomfortable. The service was standard. The food was mediocre. I recommend the noodles, fried rice, eggplant, and mushroom croquettes. Skip the veggie dumplings.

Yelp
Just come for the drinks and bar. Cocktails so tasty - drunken dragons milk is so sweet and creamy with coconut milk and green tea vodka, etc. Great service and bar area. The food itself though was very average and overpriced. Burger was cooked perfectly and very tasty. But both the burger and noodles pretty average and way overpriced for what they were
