Best restaurants in Cherry Creek | Eater Denver

"An oasis of grit in the chichi expanse of Cherry Creek, this party place is known for its freewheeling approach to tacos and margs: The former features the likes of crispy tripe, grilled lobster with smoked avocado, sweet potatoes, and tortillas flavored with hibiscus tea or squid ink, while the latter incorporates coconut, cucumber, blood orange, chiles, and more." - Eater Staff

Google
A great spot for happy hour in Cherry Creek. Happy hour is from 2pm-6pm and margs are $8 and tacos are $3. They have delicious and creative homemade corn tortillas with flavors like hibiscus and squid ink. Highly recommend sitting outside on their large patio!

Google
Machete Tequila and Tacos is definitely a spot worth visiting if you’re a fan of authentic and flavorful tacos. We tried the Al Pastor, Arrachera, and Tripas tacos, and they were absolutely amazing—well-seasoned, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor. The Lengua tacos were decent, but I probably wouldn’t order them again as they didn’t stand out compared to the others. To start, we had the salsa and guacamole, which were fresh and a great way to kick off the meal. For drinks, I had the Sayulita cocktail, which had a nice kick from the muddled habanero—spicy but well-balanced. My husband ordered the Oaxaca cocktail, which he enjoyed. Overall, Machete Tequila and Tacos delivers on bold flavors and quality ingredients. If you’re looking for a great taco spot with creative cocktails, this place is worth checking out!

Google
Fabulous food with a great variety of different tacos and dishes. Service is fast and very friendly. Good kids menu. Music a little loud but not overwhelming, and the lively atmosphere compliments the food well. The margaritas are fantastic.

Google
Great place for big parties and strong drinks! Definitely recommend if you're looking to eat good food and drink on a budget. Vibes are amazing and service was even better.

Laura Kramer

Google
Great spot for tasty tacos and good margaritas. I only wish we had more time in Denver to try the full menu. The lively vibe made the visit even better.

Google
Killer tacos. I loved the tortillas on my street tacos. I ordered the Campechano which was lovely. I am a taco snob and this landed beautifully for me. I would have like more heat out of the salsas but I’m a bit crazy when it comes to spice level.

Google
Machete specializes in tacos with house made corn tortillas and tequila. The beer list is limited but the margarita list is long. All margaritas are served on the rocks. Happy hour ends at 6 and we missed it so no margaritas for our table. Instead my party ordered tacos (grilled shrimp, sirloin and avocado salsa, and pork rib meat.) I ordered the rotisserie chicken quesadilla as well. The tacos are street taco size but very filling. The quesadilla was a good size and my favorite. The restaurant is fun. I’d like to return, sit outside, and enjoy a margarita during happy hour. According to the menu, Machete is proud to present the finest margaritas in Colorado.

Google
Amazing spot, the food waa amazing, our server was super attentive, and the happy hour was so great! Definitely coming again!

Yelp
Strong margs, great guac and the happy hour tacos were all legit. Nicely tucked away spot.

Yelp
the queso with mushrooms was scrumptious, and my quesadilla was delightful, although i would have preferred the shrimp to be cut into smaller pieces and distributed evenly across the tortillas. our server was great, but the restaurant itself is a little dark, noisy, and dirty.

Yelp
My partner and I haven't been to Machete in years--it was our 7 year anniversary and since we met there (on there outside patio--which was too hot outside for us to sit at one of the tables), we decided to celebrate by going back and sitting at the indoor bar. Inside Machete's is fairly dark, snug, with very loud music--making it hard to hear each other, as well as the bartender. When we first sat down the bar counter was filthy so my partner had to ask our bartender Olivia to wipe it down. Olivia was extremely helpful and nice and immediately had the counter cleaned. We also loved that Olivia was able to suggest tacos when we asked her which three we should try (other then steak--since we were having that for dinner). Olivia suggested: Pollo Rostizado: Rotissere Chicken, Avocado Salsa Verde (minus Crispy Potatoes to make it gluten-free), Camaron: Grilled Shrimp, Poblano Pesto, Mango-Pico, Avocado on Squid Ink Tortilla, and the Langosta *MP: Grilled Lobster, Smoked Avocado, Com, Chile Morita Aioli on Squid Ink Tortilla. The Pollo Rostizado taco was so delicious as well as the Camaron. We also liked the Langosta taco, however the aioli oversaturated the lobster taking away from being able to taste the preseasoned lobster meat, which was a disappointment. We also ordered the Queso Fundico: Acadero Cheese, Onions, Jalapeno, Mezcal (with added Chorizo) which was delicious--we really enjoyed how Machete's queso is made with real cheese versus a "cream cheese," watery cheese, or velveeta. Machete does have great Margaritas (which we have either found inconsistent when ordering another round of the same drink in many Mexican restaurants or just not that great). I had the Coin Margarita and my partner had the Skinny--both drinks were yummy. What really made our experience special was seeing the manager Sam--even though we hadn't been to Machete's in years he still remembered our faces and names. Sam is not only a caring manager, his customer service is impeccable! If you are looking for a casual Mexican restaurant, don't mind loud music, and want delicious food, I recommend you try Machete's.

Yelp
Love Machete, specifically the langosta taco! Such an amazing unique taco that I visit for. Hoping it was just a one off, but the service was not good. I sat at the outside bar that faces inside. There were like 3-4 bartenders, yet one poor girl seemed to be managing everything. There was one girl in front of us who was prepping limes for the hour I was there who didn't help the other server out at all. It took a while to get some water, and the lady next to me actually had gotten her drink forgotten about. To order a drink, food and close out I had to grab my server and she didnt have time to check in or refill water. She was the only one working with 3 other people behind the bar.

Yelp
Machete is one of our go-to happy hour spots in Cherry Creek! The jardin, al pastor, tinga, and arrachera tacos are three dollars each and margaritas are three dollars off! We also tried the five dollar pineapple shots off the happy hour menu which were amazing! They have a super wide selection of margaritas- definitely try the hibiscus one! The staff at machete is extremely sweet and very accommodating. We will be back very soon!

Yelp
Service was subpar at best. I had to ask for silverware, after the food was delivered. Secondly food was cold. Literally tortilla out of the bag and on plate. Al pastor cold from the fridge. Only thing warm was the tinga and I bet it's because it being warmed. I ordered the arrachera and it was cold. I ate the food because I was already displeased and didn't want to have a worse experience. Ambiance was actually decent on this holiday. Very disappointed. I also wanted to review them for my blog but not after a terrible experience such as this one. You can see in the pictures that the tortillas weren't event thrown on the grill for 1 second

Yelp
I met a friend for lunch on a Sunday at Machete. She recommended we order the chips and salsa. Most of the salsas were a bit spicy for me but the chips are clearly homemade and unique, they were addictive. I ordered an Al pastor taco and Arrachera con Chile Relleno Taco. The later was so spicy I had to remove the pepper just to finish it. The Al Pastor was very flavorful. Both tacos were decent size so I was full from that. I had a skinny margarita with salt on the rim. The margarita was as expected but had a bit too much ice in the glass so when I drank it slashed a bit. I would definitely go back and highly recommended stopping in if you are in Cherry Creek and want a quick bit of Mexican food.

Yelp
This place definitely has a vibe! I'm not a huge fan, but it was fun. It's loud and everything is REALLY close together. The food is delicious. We got tacos and chips and salsa with guacamole. The food actually has flavor, so if you think Taco Bell is full flavored.... This will be way too spicy for you. I like the assortment of salsas and the guacamole was very fresh. The chips are clearly made here and that's awesome. The tacos all tasted amazing and I can't pick which was my favorite. We will be back again, very very good food

Yelp
Justin is , great music, even better fundido, tacos and margs. Hibiscus is my fave. Justin is attentive even when it's busy. Service was fantastic!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Good food. Tacos tasted fresh and delicious. House Margarita- the Machete- was refreshing- not too sweet, not too tart.
google avatar

Lea R.

Yelp
Justin the bartender is amazing. Great service and super kind and fun Food was great and music on point. Ask for Justin at the bar. Can't miss him.

Yelp
It's small but fun! Not a huge space and the patio looks awesome if the weather is good. Just a heads up, if you have any issues with stairs then this might be a hassle for you; you have to go a set down stairs to the entrance. The vibe is very fun making it a fun catch up or a good date place. Our waitress was awesome! Always checked on us and made some really great recommendations. The chips and salsa were awesome, I loved the creamy green one! I had 3 different taco and they were all amazing! I highly recommend trying Machete out!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Service is pretty good but food is awesome. All their tacos and quesadillas I've had have been delicious and honestly reasonably priced compared to some of the other restaurants here in the Cherry Creek area, will be frequenting more often to try the rest of their menu!

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! We came here with 6 people and they sat us immediately! Our server was amazing! He kept our drinks full and great recommendations, too. Please note this place is not wheelchair friendly, they have over 20 stairs you have to go down because it's on the lower level, I don't know if there is an elevator somewhere I didn't see but we had a stroller and had to take the baby out to bring the stroller down with us. We shared the queso fundido and added chorizo, and that was the best decision! They give you tortillas to pull apart the cheese, the cheese was so stringy, and the chorizo was amazing! They have this awesome deal where you get 12 tacos for $57, it was perfect for us because we were gonna get 2 tacos each anyway. I chose the chorizo taco because it had mango salsa, and it was to die for! I could eat that taco every day! I also chose the pastor chicken, and the pineapple salsa was the perfect pairing. I got the fruitas margarita because I had to try thier tequila. It was perfect! It's not too sweet but yet really strong. I liked the sugar on the rim and the dried fruit added. They do not skimp on the alcohol! It was so strong that I was feeling it after only half. This place was so amazing, I highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
Great place for anything that has to do with tequila or mescal or sotol. It was mid to late afternoon on Tuesday. We perspired like nobody's business at the botanical gardens nearby (it was super hot in its mid 90 degrees). We were desperate for something that'd quench our thirst. Machete was simply a perfect place for it. Whether it's a margarita or shot of tequila or mescal or sotol, you will find something on the menu as it's got some variety. I didn't eat any food though (some of our friends ordered chips and salsa and shishito which I didn't partake.) Service was prompt. This is not a super fancy place in any way but fancy appearance doesn't always guarantee the quality of the food they serve. Price wise, they are right at the point where they are not too expensive (and too cheap may not be good from time to time either.) What I had (A Day in Tulum) hit the spot. It's refreshing and easygoing at the same time. If you are looking for some beginner/basic margarita this might be what you should order. My friend's Mescal Blackberry Smash was nice and smoky. I'll probably order this one at my next visit.

Yelp
A bit of a surprise. I've been in Machete's four times and the first two times, I viewed it as a full selection tequila bar. I didn't think much of the food. That was my mistake. The last two times I have come, I ordered two different Dishes and found the both were very tasty, well prepared, and well put together by an excellent chef in their kitchen who knows how to prepare upscale Mexican food. The cost of the food is moderate, but it is a terrific Mexican food restaurant plus it has an extensive tequila bar. I will be returning.
google avatar

Kara H.

Yelp
The food and the service were excellent. Loved the feel of the place- really colorful and fun. The prices for what you get were rough though. $15-16 for a short margarita, $6 for a street taco. I get that rent for that space is probably outrageous, but I wish the prices were more on par with what you got. Mind you, everything tasted great- the tacos were heavy on the meat and unique, with lots of fresh flavor. We adored the hibiscus margarita and the Kona had amazing tropical flavors. Everything was spot on flavor wise. I would absolutely go during happy hour, when the prices seem much more reasonable.

Yelp
This is not a place to go to relax and talk, inside it's loud and busy. But despite all the activity, service is great. Our waitress brought us a bottle of water right away and got our orders quickly. We were a little surprised at how pricey the margaritas are (the Machete - house marg?, top of the list is $14 ) but they are good and strong (we ordered a couple different ones). The selections of salsas is totally worth ordering, all of them very flavorful and different, even the chips are yummy. I'd recommend to order the guacamole because it's also good and come with the salsa. The selection of tacos is impressive and the vegan Yaca Y Champis amazing! No wonder this spot is popular!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
We were having a crappy day, so happy hour was in order. We had a great time here drowning our sorrows. The skinny marg was awesome, and the $5 pineapple shot was also tasty. In addition, we enjoyed $3 tacos and some guac, salsa, and chips. I would definitely return.

Christen H.

Yelp
The tacos are absolutely amazing! The chips and salsa are divine, the ambience is really nice, they always have great music playing. The staff is really nice too. It's always a nice experience.

Yelp
Must try: Campechano Tacos, Crisps with a Guac and Salsa, and Margaritas! Why: The Masa Crisps with Guac and Salsa were awesome and came out literally less than a minute after ordering. I enjoyed having the 4 salsa options too. I also got three tacos and my fav was Campechano: Sirloin, Chorizo, and Oaxaca Cheese topped with Avocado Salsa Verde, Onions, and Cilantro - delicioso! The Strawberry Margarita was refreshing made with tequila and strawberry bits inside! Notes: Great Mexican spot with high top and bar seating, as well as outdoor dining. Workers were friendly and provided great recommendations. My friends and I got into deep conversation catching up after a couple years of not seeing each other, and the waitress checked in but also gave us time to order without rushing us. Overall fantastic experience!

Nathan B.

Yelp
Amazing tacos and nice patio experience. I would recommend the salsa and the Al pastor tacos.

M J.

Yelp
The Manager wouldn't help Our table was so tightly arranged that two members of our party physically couldn't pull their chairs out to sit down. When we asked the manager if the table could be shifted slightly to make room, we were met with a flat-out refusal: "We don't move tables." No attempt to find a solution, no concern for our comfort--just an unhelpful and dismissive attitude. Our only option was to leave without ordering. Pathetic!
google avatar

Edie A.

Yelp
The spice and margaritas are strong at Machete - just like Danny Trejo in the movie. They have a great happy hour from 3-6pm with $3 off margaritas and $3 tacos. If you want heavier fare, the Calma Borrachos is a heaping plate of al pastor , steak, mushrooms, bacon, onions, and cheese with tortillas on the side. (I recommend getting the flour.) Wash that all down with a Machete margarita and you will be satisfied.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Me, wearing a skirt and super-femmy hair style: Excuse me, where is the bathroom? Waiter: It's at the end of the hallway and then turn to your left. Me: Thank you. The hallway: [is totally straight, with the men's room on the left and the ladies' on the right] Me, annoyed at being visibly trans: Ah. Anyway, the food was okay, I guess. Chicken tinga was okay, al pastor was dry and not terribly flavorful. Everything needed a touch more salt.

Elaine D.

Yelp
Our bartender Justin was amazing! Best spicy Rico and service was top notch! Food is soooo good!
google avatar

FallonRaye S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and their tacos are delicious. So are their drinks! The drink and taco menu is pretty extensive, so there's a lot to choose from. The interior has dimmer lighting but you're still able to see. However I wish it was just slightly brighter. Or you can just sit outside. Which I enjoy doing. The bar has outdoor seating.

ryan m.

Yelp
Machete has always been fairly pedestrian when it comes to food; it's saving grace being the drinks and service. Unfortunately, the bald guy who is bartending there (might be the bar manager, I'm unsure) is just an ass. Really poor experience with him-- very short, unhelpful, and sarcastic. Also, the bar top was a complete disgusting mess and I had to ask for a wet towel, to which he gave me, to clean it up myself. Do better bud. You're there to serve.
google avatar

Osvaldo V.

Yelp
What a cool place. Went with several colleagues from work for dinner. We ordered the chips, salsa and guacamole for the table. The four salsas that they served with the chips were very good and fresh. The 3 tacos that I ordered were excelente. I also ordered the side of rice and beans. The we're good but lacked flavor and definitely not worth $10. Our server was very good and very helpful with the menu and selection.

John C.

Yelp
Outstanding cocktails. I didn't eat but the food did look amazing. I can speak to the margs and they were excellent.

Jack R.

Yelp
From the entrance - the host gave an attitude of misery, followed by sitting at the bar, the gentleman gave a bulldog face attitude! I myself, normally tell my employees if they don't want to work; take the fucken day off to recalibrate! The place was not even busy, and man, would I come back, absolutely fucken not! I'll stick to the downtown location! Oh, the food is great, but this time around it sat out before it got to me, and it was cold...... take your money elsewhere! This comes from a person that's been coming to this place for years..... miserable dinner experience this time around.

Yelp
Machete never disappoints, even across locations!! I live much closer to the Union Station one but found myself in Cherry Creek hanging out with my best friend. We found a paid parking lot (because driving around to look for street parking was a waste of time around lunch) and walked a few blocks to the restaurant. Despite how busy the neighborhood is, we were seated immediately. Same menu. Same vibe. Same quality of food and drinks. Plain and simple, check out machetedenver.com/menu. Our waiter was fantastic, and I got the same thing I usually do: Shishito Peppers, Shrimp Quesadilla, and Spicy Rico Margarita. Everything was so flavorful and made me look good in front of my best friend who I recommended this place to. At some point I should probably try a few other dishes, but for now, I'm sticking to my favorites. It really says something about the business to have consistency in service and food at multiple locations. Even if you order to-go, it's been easy and efficient in my experience. Bring some friends for a visit, and maybe don't drive because the margaritas are quite strong!!

Yelp
I was excited to try out their patio for dinner on a recent nice day, but unfortunately they didn't seem to want us to. We got seated by the host and then ignored for the next 25 minutes before we finally gave up. The patio was busy, but no one acknowledged us - even to bring water or take drink orders - despite servers walking behind us every couple of minutes. A weird, rude experience.
google avatar

Holly F.

Yelp
I may have been a little too excited to come here and had too high expectations. We were lucky to grab what seemed like the last spot in the back lot and were seated with our reservation on time. Our server was kind but seemed to disappear towards the end. There was someone that seemed like a friend who had brought a baby and they spent time holding them over giving us our check. The margs were pretty good, but the food was just okay. While I enjoyed the decor it could have been a little more. Overall pretty nice.
google avatar

Eddy F.

Yelp
Was not impressed with their customer service at all. So much so that I decided not to eat. I was with some older people that needed to stay to take their pills with food and could not wait for another table at a different restaurant. The server was very rude, made me feel like I was doing them a favor by coming to eat there. We could not have separate checks, even though we were at separate tables, because they add 15% gratuity to large groups. And the cherry on the cake? They would not let my mom keep a menu to peruse and order something later. It's such a little thing but my final straw. I hope yall have a better experience than I did.
google avatar

Jordan J.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Super cool vibes underground and the food was great too. I smashed In here daisy was our server and she did an amazing job. 10/10 will be back
google avatar

Jordan W.

Yelp
Such a good taco spot! Love the vibe, tacos were amazing, chips and guac were great, good service. Definitely a spot worth checking out
google avatar

Joshua B.

Yelp
This place is great! I moved here a month ago from San Antonio and my first goal was to find good tacos and Machete Tequila + Tacos delivers every time! It's a real chill place, the bartenders are friendly, and the tacos (and variety) taste amazing! I've found my local taco place
google avatar

Ahron B.

Yelp
Tacos were flavorful and good portions of ingredients, chips and salas were good, and the margaritas were LARGE and delicious. Hit the spot and would go back.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Have been here multiple times and will keep going back!! Stopped in for a quick lunch today - got seated immediately at our requested location on the patio. Our server brought us water + additional drinks very quickly. Was super attentive and the food came out quick. The tacos were very tasty. My favorite was the campechango!
google avatar

Umar G.

Yelp
Best tacos I've had in a while . Proper corn tortillas , massive amounts of filling and bursting with flavor . Definitely a great spot to stop with friends since they have a great selection of tacos and it would be fine to try and share a bunch of them . Lost star is for wonky tables and too-cramped inside seating. Also I don't recommend the guacamole or the salsas. Guac needed more seasoning and had an processed ice cream scoop quality . Salsa seemed a little less fresca and more quesa (and not in a good way) . Took away from the fresh and vibrant flavors that make Mexican food delightful. But definitely some for the tacos .
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
This is one of the staple neighborhood tacos spots you can add to your list. It's casual with an upscale flare. There's a variety of tacos on your menu (including all the ones you'd typically predict and more that will catch you by surprise). Everytime I've visited, I've had good service. The tacos are yum and the margs are strong. The tacos are small street tacos which makes it perfect for a happy hour snack or stack up to create a full meal.

Kathy K.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican. Happy hour prices not bad. Music waaaaay too loud. Cannot hear your people even sitting close together.
google avatar

Sarena R.

Yelp
Really great flavor. Amazing salsa selection and chips. Great original margarita. Would come back!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to try this place out. Had 3 tacos, veggie, chicken, & carnitas. They were all flavorful but the carnitas were the best. Even though these are the size of street tacos they are hearty which was awesome. Once you order from here, be sure to walk over to Cerebral brewing after.

Jhosselyn M.

Yelp
It's a good place but the manager is really rude, it's my 3rd time there and the attention is the worst
google avatar

Drew F.

Yelp
Stopped in to grab some lunch and I picked a pretty good day because it wasn't crowded at all. The staff was really friendly and at the time I visited, mask were required and social distant rules were in effect. I started with a margarita and the chips and salsa... which was amazing but one of the salsa dips were hot... it had my head sweating like crazy but I love spicy food so I was there for the punishment. For my main lunch, I went with the local favorites...Arrichera, Al Pastor and I wanted the Langosta but they were out. So I went with the Bacalao Al Pastor. While I had my mouth set on that lobster taco... I wasn't disappointed in the tacos at all. I will certainly be back becuase I want to try the Langosta. I thoroughly enjoyed the staff as they continued to check on me and to make sure if I needed another drink or just anything in general. Kudos to the staff and the bartender because that Margarita was on point! I highly recommend you give them a try and if you do, tell'em Drew sent ya! Y'all be Easy! Drew

Adrian S.

Yelp
Everything here is great What else do you need me to say, snobs. Service is good, tacos are great. That costilla joint is bangin son, word to my mother. Margs slap you right where you wanna be slapped. Only complaint is the customers bunch of weirdos, but hey, you can't have it all.

Khalil F.

Yelp
Would recommend. They have really good tacos and I thoroughly enjoyed their birria tacos to be more exact. I will be stopping by again if I'm ever in the area.
