The Ultimate Guide to Boba in New York City | Eater NY

"The name Machi Machi means “best friend” in Taiwanese. The Taiwanese chain’s Koreatown store is Instagrammable with neon lights, interactive wall art, and cute bottles. They are most known for their strawberry latte with panna cotta, jasmine green tea with plum jello, and black milk tea with creme brulee. There are also mochi donuts and Korean corndogs for purchase inside the storefront for those craving a snack." - Anna Huang

Located on the first floor of a mall, you order at a kiosk — there’s not much seating from the store, as the seating around is part of the mall. They had some cool art and small murals around the store that you can take pictures of. Ordered a standard milk tea and a cheese foam drink — they were decent but overpriced for what they were. Drinks take while to be made as well.

Google
Machi Machi in Queens is a must-visit for bubble tea lovers The drinks are super smooth and flavorful and you can really taste the quality in every sip I tried their famous cream cheese foam tea and it was next level The presentation is always on point and the vibe inside is clean modern and relaxing Staff is friendly and helpful especially if it’s your first time Definitely coming back to try more drinks on the menu

Google
I had a really great experience trying this unique drink at Machi Machi in Flushing. First of all, their bottle-style drink cups are so cute and something I brought home so I can reuse. I ordered the Shizuoka Matcha Milk Tea with Panna Cotta and I really enjoyed it. the matcha is very good quality and has great flavor, and the Panna Cotta (first time trying for me) definitely added a unique texture to the drink that I’ve never had before, but I really liked it. It tasted like I had a small sweet custard inside my drink. This location is in the Tangram Mall in Flushing so there’s seating nearby in the mall/food court. The drink is definitely not the cheapest (~$9), which is the main reason I won’t give five stars, but it was a great experience nonetheless and glad I got to try. Will be back!

Google
Location location. This bubble tea spot is conveniently situated on the ground floor of the Tangram Mall. You order at kiosk and wait for them to send you a text that it’s ready. I only saw 1 staff, likely another in the rear. Expect a 10 minute wait or longer. Better to stroll around until you get texted. My grapefruit, mango, & cream smoothie was good. The size was about 14 oz? For $9.21 a drink, I don’t feel like I’m getting much value here. 20 oz would have justified it. It’s a nice sugar rush. Looks like a novelty with the teenage crowd 💰💰

Google
This was my second time trying Machi Machi. First time I purchased for their special bottle and this time I was attracted by their tiny knit Christmas hat for the bottle. The appearance of the milk tea is creative and cute. Their original plastic bottle with the logo sticker is very convenient to bring it out and can be reused if you want. However, just some signature drinks can be made in this special bottle. Generally, the taste and quality is great. If you’ve never try it before, you definitely can take a try. For the cost performance, it is 7/10 personally. One score for the price, one for the variety and the other for the quantity. The price is a little bit too high for me, but if I am a fan of Jay Zhou, I probably will accept it in a happy mood. The variety and quantity is not as much as I expected since I am a senior milk tea lover and I have tried so many milk tea before. Compared to other brand, it is absolutely above average but not my favorite.

Google
good but VERY expensive for what it is. i've been to this location twice and had been treated by my sister both times. otherwise i'd find it hard to shell out $$ for their drinks. the panna cotta drinks are definitely popular here and the taro and strawberry drinks are both pretty good. the grapefruit green tea with jelly was very refreshing and balanced. i've tried a fruit tea before and found it very underwhelming, so underwhelming that i've forgotten what it was... now, the best drink i've gotten so far is the shizuoka matcha milk tea with creme brulee and red beans. the creme topping is like a more liquid version of a pudding or creme brulee, it was sooooo rich and decadent! the matcha had a nice flavor (not that grass clipping taste) and red beans made it a perfect match. highly recommend this one if you're a matcha fiend! overall, it's pretty but oooooooh-so-pricey. definitely more like an once-in-awhile kinda treat.

Google
I tried the new drink Mojito, which taste really fruity and fresh!!! The staff is really nice and well explained what’s contained in the drink. Definitely will come back again and try other drinks! Recommend to everyone

Google
I recently visited Machi Machi Flushing in the Tangram mall and I'm so glad I did! This place is so unique - you order from a kiosk and then they make your drink right in front of you! I had a panna cotta drink for the first time and it was delicious. Plus, it came in a really cute bottle. There aren't many seats to wait for your drink, but that didn't bother me because the wait time was minimal. Highly recommend!

Yelp
On a normal day, I would steer clear of anything in Ktown but I was sold on the cute bubble tea panna cotta flasks. It isn't new to add pudding into bubble tea, but when it's marketed as pAnNa CoTta in a cute flask on Instagram, your mind starts to consider. So when my friends and I walked in, I ordered a Black Milk Tea with Panna Cotta and my other friend ordered a standard ti guan yin green tea through the digital kiosks. It didn't take long for our orders to be called and we picked up our drinks at the pickup window. Taste and texture wise, the Black Milk Tea with the Panna Cotta is a hit with the subtle sweetness of the black milk tea (25% sweetness) mixed with the creamy chunks of panna cotta. I surprise myself in admitting that the drink was worth my 9 dollars. My friend's ti guan yin green tea was pretty good too but I think you can get similar quality for cheaper at other places. So if you're also targeted by those cute Machi Machi Instagram ads, give into the temptation and get your milk tea panna cotta flask. Or even better, go with your friends and try one each.

Yelp
If Machi Machi were anywhere else in Flushing, it would be harder to stand out given the endless drink shops around the neighborhood. But because they're in Tangram (#1) where bubble tea shops are a bit more sparse, it becomes a no brainer to grab a drink here when walking around the place. I've found that each time I'm shopping around here, I'll eventually end up at Machi Machi. Like many places, they have a self-ordering touch screen with a variety of fruit based drinks, milk tea, and seasonal series. I don't see folks behind the counter often and thus the service is sometimes non-existent. In fact, had it not been for the Yelp app, I wouldn't have noticed this spot at all. There is some limited seating on the side and a nice IG-worthy "I love you so machi" illuminated wall sign. Most of the milk teas come in a standard plastic cup with a seal, but any of the panna cotta series will come in a cute bottle with a metal screw-on cap. It's fancy packaging and a cute gimmick that is clearly working for them. I think the black milk tea is very average, but the Shizuoka matcha milk tea with creme brulee is particularly good choice. The strawberry latte with panna cotta is nice during the summer time, as is any of their fruit smoothies with cheese foam. Drinks are going to be in the 8-$10 range, which is unfortunately where NYC is on drink-flation. They close a little earlier than other businesses in the mall, which is around 8pm on most days. It's not destination worthy milk tea in my opinion, but it's a solid option for days where venturing out beyond Tangram's doors isn't likely. ___________ (#1) https://www.yelp.com/biz/tangram-flushing

Yelp
A complete 180° experience from their Manhattan location. I'm sure they answered most of us Queensites' (myself included) prayers when they opened this location and it has been a blessing. Despite peak times, I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes for a drink (compared to the 1.5 hours in K-Town, which was a low moment where I had compromised my principles). I usually just make a pick-up order and amazingly, it is always ready on time. I've yet had a drink that I didn't like--all of them have been done to my liking and IMO, their no-sweetness is much better than any additional sugar. I really wish that they offered the drinks in a cup rather than the bottles that you can reuse/repurpose for only so many things but I'm sure that wouldn't be as profitable. The bottled drinks are probably some of the priciest drinks that I've ever had (high $8-$10 range), and for such a smaller quantity than average. There are only about 3-4 other specialty drink shops in the Tangram Mall, so if you're a visitor from out of the area, you really have to pick your poison...or space them out!

Yelp
I usually visit this Machi Machi once in a while when I'm at Tangram. Compared to their Ktown location, the lines are much shorter here. Copied from the ktown Machi Machi review: I typically get their panna cotta. I've tried both the Matcha Panna Cotta and the Strawberry Latte Panna Cotta. Honestly, I wasn't a fan of the Matcha Panna Cotta; it was quite bitter and lacked the rich quality I was expecting. I wouldn't get it again. However, I do recommend the Strawberry Latte Panna Cotta. Although it's a bit grainy with seeds (which I don't mind!), the strawberry flavor is pleasant and I'm a huge fan of the panna cotta part at the bottom! Overall, I'd say Machi Machi is more about the aesthetic than high-quality boba. The drinks are pricey and, in my opinion, not really worth it for the taste. The beverages are average, but what you're really paying for is the unique bottle and the Instagram-worthy presentation. 3.5, rounded to a 4. P.S.: Visit sometime during the holiday season and they add a cute hat to your bottle :)

Yelp
Love machi machi. It's my first time trying in the flushing location. It located in the lower level. We tried the : strawberry latte w Panna cotta Mango cream smoothie w/ jelly pearl and grapefruit jelly It was really good. Total was $19.50 which is pretty pricey but would definitely get it again.

Yelp
I was pretty fascinated with the drinks with a layer at the bottom at Machi Machi, and decided to try the strawberry milk with panna cotta. The strawberry milk was frothy and icy. The panna cotta was an interesting experience... The drink wasn't too sweet, which was nice, but I would rather have cheese foam than panna cotta. It definitely looks cool but I don't know how well it works as a "topping" -- seems like more of a novelty than anything.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
When Machi Machi was selling drinks with the miniature beanies on top, I had to show my boyfriend how cute they were on IG. And good thing I did because he ended up getting me the macha latte with panna cotta! I generally enjoy matcha lattes, but panna cotta is one of my favorite desserts, so I was excited to try the combination. The matcha was a little more on the bitter side, which I don't mind because I prefer the bittersweet flavor, but it was a little too grainy. The panna cotta was good though. Overall, the drink was okay and was a little expensive for the size, but the beanie made it worth it for me!

Carolyn W.

Yelp
The customer service here is quite awful. I asked them to make my drink with adjustments and they would not accommodate. I offered to pay the difference so that I can add a topping into my drink that was not included. It doesn't cost much to help a customer, especially since drinks are easily customizable, but it seems like they just don't care about customers. Won't be returning here unfortunately, especially since there is no where to sit and only a kiosk to order.

Yelp
*Strawberry Latte w/ Panna Cotta I love this Strawberry Milk so Machi! The sugar level was fixed but the strawberry milk was naturally sweet and without any artificial flavors. At the bottom it was loaded with panna cotta, which really hit my personal sweet spot. The milky pudding added an interesting texture to the drink after smashing it into chunks. I was a bit freaked out when they didn't provide any milk alternatives for their drinks. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products, be careful when you order. I struggled for awhile but still decided to gamble my stomach to try their strawberry latte bc the plastic flask was cute. luckily I didn't suffer from any lactose intolerance symptoms afterwards. Tbh it was shocking to see Machi Machi has low ratings on Yelp. That was why I hesitated whether I should still splurge on their drinks. The reviews were justifying bc the pricing is unreasonably aggressive ($9). Well, this is a celebrity-brand as it is owned by Jay Chou. Self-explanatory. *** A little tip: enjoy a discount if you spend $10 and order via Chowbus app. Worth Returning ? Yes but only if there is discount lol

Yelp
I have a love and hate relationship with Machi Machi. It is one of my favorite boba places by taste, but it is truly overpriced due to its fame. There are 2 Machi Machi locations in NY - one in Ktown and one in Flushing. The Flushing location is in the Tangram Mall's first floor - you can place your order through kiosk, and the wait time is not too long. If you are looking for a insta-worthy place with tasty drinks and cute bottle. This is it. But be prepared to spend ~$9 per drink. If you don't mind the price and want a good milk tea or fruit tea, this is it for you as well. Machi Machi's fruit based drinks and milk tea are all excellent. A few of my personal favorites: Fruity: - Jasmine Green Tea with Plum Jello - Grapefruit Green Tea Slush with Jelly - Jasmine Green Tea with Fresh Fruits Milky: - Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta - Black Milk Tea with Taro Balls

Yelp
New bubble tea shop?  Yes please! Although I probably wouldn't call this a "shop"; it's more like a stall. Machi Machi is a tea shop chain that originated from Taiwan.  This is their second location in New York and is located inside the Tangram building in the lower level.  Interestingly enough, there are two other bubble tea business inside this building I guess in Flushing, there's enough of a bubble tea demand to warrant this??  I ordered a Black Milk Tea with Creme Brulee and Tapioca. At almost ten bucks for my drink, prices are higher here than other bubble tea shops. The drink was delicious. Delicate and fresh tasting. The creme brulee had a smooth texture, slight sweet taste and went well with the black tea. Is it worth the hype?  Eh...I'm still undecided.
google avatar

Vianna C.

Yelp
Novelty drink that was overpriced ($9 for this grapefruit green tea)--what's new? The flavor was great, and there's a layer of jelly at the bottom. But for a larger size and more drink, you could probably go elsewhere. As many others have shared, service was a little slow. Yes the drink comes in a bottle, but it's not glass so I didn't get the hype. A fun experience while it lasted, but not sure I would order again :')

Yelp
This Machi Machi is the second one in NY located in Tangram mall in Flushing, Queens. I tried the one in Koreatown and liked the creme brûlée milk tea a lot so decided to give a second try of other drinks since I live in queens. I didn't get the drinks in bottle because it was way too pricey and not worth it. I ordered two drinks: the green team plum juice with boba and regular bubble milk tea with boba. Their boba is pretty big and chewy with a good amount as well. Very satisfied! The green tea with plum juice was pretty good, very refreshing and surprisingly strong taste of teA. I like it a lot compared to the regular bubble milk black tea. However, ordered two medium drinks and it was $17 in total, quite pricey for boba tea.
google avatar

Ava Y.

Yelp
I ordered the chocolate crème brûlée milk tea (iced) and my friend got the creamy corn black milk tea (hot). We both enjoyed them. I liked that the chocolate in my milk tea tasted like real melted chocolate and not just syrup. The prices are a bit high but I think it's worth the occasional treating yourself for the taste. Also, there is only space to sit for 3 people under their pretty signage. It's a grab and go place within Tangram mall.
google avatar

Karen X.

Yelp
The drinks were pretty okay but I think the high price and the small drinks don't make it worth it. It seems like you're paying more for the nice cups...

Yelp
Have heard the hype about Machi machi and was super excited to try it since this location opened in the Tangram. I ordered one of the seasonal drinks and my boyfriend got the creme brûlée we both enjoyed our drink. To order there is a kiosk and once your order is ready they will call out for your number. I love their wall that is decorated because it is perfect for a cute picture.
google avatar

Mimee S.

Yelp
Cute little stall inside Tangram. The appeal is that you can have some of the signature drinks in a bottle. Long wait. Staff was friendly. The strawberry panna cotta was actually quite good but not sure if it's worth the price.

mandy w.

Yelp
The milky pudding underneath the bottled milk tea is extraordinary must try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The handmade brown sugar latte was well balanced. Boba is really elastic and fresh. Definitely will come again and buy their brown sugar drink.
google avatar

Iki C.

Yelp
Heard it was Jay Chou's favorite boba place, but the food is alright. Had it several times and the matcha drinks and mango drinks are recommended over standard milk tea. The staff is really friendly and the decor is so cute!
google avatar

Hellen C.

Yelp
The service was good and overall got my drinks pretty fast. However, the boba and drinks overall were okay. In my personal opinion not worth the price. If you are looking to try a unique drink and experience than it's a good spot.
google avatar

Jen W.

Yelp
This place is very Grammable. Everyone wants the bottle. And the bottle costs extra, so be aware of that. Yes it looks pretty in the bottle. But drinking it with such a small opening is annoying. Plus the bottle is plastic. I got the drink in a normal cup as well. It tastes the same. I got the mango slush special. It's pretty good but a bit pricier than your average bubble tea. You're probably going to get the bottle for the gram. But the next time you can get it in a normal cup. It will taste the same. You can order at the kiosk, but if you only have cash you'll have to wait on the other line for an actual person to take your order. It does a Take a while to get your drink but that's why they have those seats for you!
google avatar

Anthony X.

Yelp
The one star is for the prices they are charging for the drinks. A large black milk tea w/bubble costs $11.38. It's insane that they are charging so much for one large drink. In Taiwan, the same drink will probably cost around $1.65. If I went to another bubble tea shop in the same location I can save around $4.00.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
I always see long lines here and I heard it was Jay Chou's favorite boba shop so I was curious to try it. I ordered a basic sun moon lake tea and was not impressed. It had an interesting aftertaste and was kind of watered down. I'm glad I ordered a basic drink, the other drinks were pricey and I'm not sure if they would have been worth it.
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
As much as I want to complain about the price, I think that approach is unfair. If you go get a premium tea with name brand, hype, and modernity, it'll reflect on the price. I had the matcha red bean, strawberry slush, and fruit jasmine green. Bad move on the slush--not enough flavor, which is good! Just means I'm addicted to sugar unfortunately. What sucked was the wait time. I don't understand why it takes more than 5 mins per drink. If we consider that Starbucks has ridiculous drink orders but can turn that back and more under 5 mins, then there should be no reason for a 10 minute wait. I know for sure they're not doing fresh brewed hot tea, then flash freezing it to be cold, before serving it into a cup. It's all prepped before hand. At 10 mins, it's inefficient and pretentious goods.

Sarinna S.

Yelp
Pros: - inside Tangram mall which was gave easy access to eat different foods - promotion for free drink is available - drink tasted really good. I ordered Grapefruit Mango cream smoothie!!' Would order again - service is speedy - vibe there was beautiful Cons: - $$$ really pricey for a drink. the drink was $9 for 1 drink - chairs were dirty outside for the store Overall, I would come back again. The drink was delicious. It was better than Moge tea drinks.
google avatar

Diana P.

Yelp
The flavors of their milk tea are very good and their packaging and stall is very aesthetically pleasing but the drink comes with a high price and long wait time. $9.20 for a small bottle of black tea panna cotta. It's def a once in a while splurge for me. Their tea flavor is strong which is always a plus for me. the level of sweetness is perfect for me. Currently , they seem to be very backed up and it could be due to the new craze in flushing and lack of employees but I am sure it'll get better later. Right now , they are new and probably just getting used to the volume of work. Def worth trying this spot out.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is located at the new mall Tangram in Flushing. My friend and I stopped by here to try out their drinks. I know there is one location in KTOWN but I never got the chance to try it over there since it always a long line. When I found out they opened one in at Tangram, I was super excited. I tried their Grapefruit Slushy with jelly. I loved it! It was perfect and it was great for the summer. The line wasn't too long. But the wait time for the drinks to pick up took a little longer than I expected. I assumed they don't have any staffs in the back. We waited about 5-10 mins for our drinks. I feel like the drink is slightly on the expensive side, but it probably because due to the cute bottle they have. You pretty much paying for the extra $1-2 for the bottle. However, we were still satisfied about the drinks we had. We do like to come back and try their other drinks when we are around the area again.
google avatar

Zhangkai L.

Yelp
Tardy waited from 1040 all the way to 1130 store still didn't open up. Even tho it's posted that they open at 11. A lot of people walked by but left after seeing they didn't open yet
google avatar

Yelp
Nice new bubble tea place. I like the drinks, it's pricey but you gotta treat yourself from time to time right?

J W.

Yelp
Cute photo seating area. Drinks are $7-8. They cater to ppl who like aesthetically pleasing but very sweet drinks. Tried the matcha milk tea with creme brulee. The creme brûlée was too rich & sweet for my taste & ruined the drink. Matcha milk tea was average. Located on the ground floor of Tangram mall.
google avatar

Jean C.

Yelp
Ordered the Handmade Brown Sugar Latte with Organic Milk & Tapioca. Barely can taste the brown sugar, it was all milk. It's too expensive for the quality. Will not be coming back.

Yelp
AHHHHH, the place is so cute and the drinks are so good!! The ume its self was too good i wanted to bring all my friends to try it! The front person that help me was super nice too. She recommended me stuff. Only think is its too expensive but tbh it was worth the price

Kelvin X.

Yelp
Charged me $11 for this boba tea. I specifically told the middle age lady at the counter that I want less sugar but the boba tea came out way too sweet that I have to throw it away. I regret wasting $11 for this and I definitely will not go back again!!!

Yelp
I knew that Machi Machi was coming to Tangram, but didn't realize that this place opened. The shop is in a corner of the lower level of the building, right next to kid's playground/cafe. There is a line with ppl waiting around the table. It took around 5 mins to order on the kiosk and your receipt has your #. I got the grapefruit green tea and it was around $9. Pretty pricey for the neighborhood. Other shops around Main St is $5-$7 so yes bubble tea isn't the cheapest drinks. Anyways, the drink took around 7 mins to come out, but I kinda figured I will wait with the people staying around. The drink came in a cute plastic bottle - unfortunately, doesn't seem too reliable to be reused and repurposed. After a quick picture, I tried the drink and was very impressed. The drink is pretty good - I got 30% sugar level and was the perfect sweet but not too sweet. It was a nice experience, but I feel like I will need to really crave it to order again. So if you are around Tangram, why not? :)

Lyn Y.

Yelp
Must try this place , and I had to give 5 stars Love Mango limited edition drink! Also Panna Cotta is lit !

Jabir B.

Yelp
Don't listen to the salty low ratings from these broke bozos because of the price. Yes it is a little pricey but the quality and taste of what you're getting is worth it. I've been here multiple times and was never disappointed.

Monica L.

Yelp
Would not recommend unless you want to get ripped off. There was a sign posted up front with a promo code for $8 off your first drink if you order through the Chowbus app. I tried ordering 2 drinks through the app but received an error message saying the promo code expired. I proceeded to just purchase a single drink in person because I still wanted to try it out. I got the black milk tea with panna cotta which was only ok and definitely not worth $8 for the "instagram" packaging that just looked like a plastic shampoo bottle. Several hours later they called to say I had an order ready for pick up at the Flushing location, but I was now in Manhattan. Turns out the app still processed my original 2 drink order of $16 despite the error message. The employee told me I could contact Chowbus to received a refund for these 2 drinks I could not pick up. The app's customer service rep said Machi Machi is responsible for processing the refund, even though I was informed the opposite by the employee. After several days of messaging the app's customer service rep they said Machi Machi refuses to give me a full refund to my original form of payment and was only able to get a credit to the app. This credit is now useless to me because I only downloaded the app for the promo which Machi Machi falsely advertised as valid in front of their establishment. I also don't live in an area where I can use the app again in the near future. This place is a truly a gimmick and the drinks are absolutely not worth their crazy expensive prices. Please consider getting your bubble tea anywhere else but here.
