10 Quality Spots For Fast, Delicious Food in Jacksonville

"Head to Mackey's Munchies for a taste of New Orleans in Orange Park. The restaurant specializes in everything from shrimp po'boys and gumbo to jambalaya and beignets. Those with a big appetite will want to try the beef with debris, such as a pulled beef sandwich covered in brown gravy, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a special sauce." - Megan duBois

12 Cozy Comfort Food Restaurants in Jacksonville - Eater Miami

"When it comes to New Orleans-style comfort food like red beans and rice, jambalaya, and po boys, Mackey’s Munchies is the spot to be. The restaurant is owned and operated by a husband and wife team, who are just as warm and welcoming as the food the kitchen is dishing out. Do not leave Mackey’s Munchies without trying its Gumbo Jumbo, which combines the restaurant’s back of the house gumbo with jambalaya rice, seafood, sausage, and okra for a unique take on a classic dish." - Megan duBois

Google
Fantastic mom & pop restaurant. The portions were generous and the seasoning is on point. Very welcoming environment, great music. We had the shrimp po boy, big shrimp dinner and okra. Their in house dressing is delicious. We’re looking forward to trying their other menu items.

Google
Delicious! I stopped in for some okra and beignets... both amazing! Couldn't stop thinking about it so had to come back a couple of days later to try the fish sandwich and mack and cheese. Great food and great service. Mrs. Mackey makes you feel like family. She has never met a stranger and is so wonderful.

Google
We were impressed. The fried green tomatoes were the best we ever had. The dipping sauce was delicious. The owners were so friendly and fun. My hubby's poor boy was a nice size. The etoufee and jambalaya were some of the best I ever had. The beignets were perfect with lots of confectioners sugar. Totally recommend! Festive atmosphere too.

Google
What a great place! A wonderful family owned restaurant. Everything we tasted was excellent! My wife had a shrimp po'boy, I had the Jumbo Gumbo. We also got fried okra, and red beans and rice. Again everything was delicious and not too salty. Other "Authentic" New Orleans restaurants use extra salt instead of proper spicing. Not here at Mackey's. We tried the peach mango bread pudding and the beignets for dessert. Again it all made our tastebuds dance! We will definitely be back!

Google
Absolutely the best place for Cajun food in the sunshine state! There are so many different food options to choose from. No matter what you get, you will not be disappointed. They come in perfect portions. Do not forget to top your meal off with some of their delicious beignets. While this food is amazing, their service was even better. You most certainly will leave with a smile on your face. This place is the embodiment of souther hospitality. Definitely worth the stop.

Google
My husband and I ate at Mackey's for the first time today. It was incredible! We ordered the fried green tomatoes, jumbo gumbo, shrimp po' boy and the beignets. The tomatoes were crispy and delicious with an amazing dipping sauce. The po' boy was the best I've ever had, perfectly seasoned shrimp, on freshly made straight bustin' bread. It was on point! The jumbo gumbo was straight fire! 3 different meats, rice & okra, simply amazing. Lastly the beignets, sooo damn good. Don't sleep on those beignets! We will definitely be returning, I need to try the award winning fried okra!

Google
The roast beef poboy was made juuuust right. Very sloppy and I love it like that. I recommend forks, or licking your fingers. The gumbo, could have been better but wasn't terrible. I'll definitely be back to try more on the menu but I have no regrets overall. Very nice staff

Google
Great food and the owner made me feel like family! I’ve been wanting to try this place out for awhile and first timers get to ring a bell which is a fun touch! I got the shrimp poboy fully dressed and a side of red beans and rice. As you can see, I was a satisfied customer 😂 The only thing I would do differently is get a little spice in the red beans and rice but I will know for next time. Will definitely be returning 😊

Yelp
The food is amazing & The owners are as well!! Very friendly, very welcoming & Fresh Food!! The shrimp & grits are great!! They have daily specials as well! Located in Orange Park.

Yelp
5 of us dined in and tried many different dishes (Po Boy, Gumbo Jumbo, Crawfish Etouffee, red beans and rice, Mack'N Cheese, Beignets, etc.). The customer service was good (very friendly), and the ambiance was on theme, but the food was just decent. I've had quite a bit of Creole food, and this didn't really do it for me (or anyone else in our party). The consensus was the same: the food needed more salt and/or seasoning, the Mack'N Cheese tasted almost sweet (with no other discernible flavor), which was a bit off putting, and the value for the amount of food you get isn't appropriate. $14 for a small container of Crawfish Etouffee and $7 for 3 small beignets with a massive scoop of powdered sugar, ain't it. Again, the food was decent, but I definitely don't find myself returning.

Yelp
Delicious food, New Orleans cuisine, friendliest atmosphere! Even though its service is counter-order, the staff is cordial and helpful.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of North Florida. My wife and I connected with the business owner on the way back from Jacksonville one time and we've been hooked ever since. She has some of the best Cajun cooking I've ever tried. On this visit I got the shrimp po boy and gumbo. The Po Boy lived up to its original title. It was piled high with shrimp, lettuce, and tomato. They also add a special sauce to it that pretty good. The gumbo was very good as well. I got it with the second spiciest setting so it had some serious heat. I got a sweet tea to wash it all down. The business owner is such a glorious host and keeps all the customers entertained. From the way she calls out order to her attire, it really brings a certain pizzazz to the restaurant. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for quality Cajun cooking.

Yelp
This place did not disappoint - between the amazing flavorful food to the best sweet tea, & amazing service..I don't even know where to begin about our experience here. The ambiance is so fun and decorated with sections of history. I absolutely adored their little library section as this is something my little one loves whenever we go out and explore - he also enjoyed their section of art supplies as we waited for our food. For our food we chose to try their shrimp po-boy, blackened shrimp, and beignets. the po-boy was filled with shrimp and definitely shareable - my little devoured their blackened shrimp and immediately asked for sweet tea where to his surprise Mrs. Mackey let him try it and he was impressed (it really was delicious haha, thanks for the taste test!). Our beignets didn't last very long either - thank goodness we each got one haha they were delicious and perfect end to our meal. The service was wonderful- loved how staff made our experience personable, checking in, and just overall making us feel welcomed/seen. We can't wait to come back and try more things!

Yelp
You can taste the love that goes into all their food. Wonderful atmosphere with attentive service.

Yelp
Second time back and keeps getting better. The first time was during the pandemic and it was only outdoor seating. This time, indoor seating is available and what a festive atmosphere. The staff and owners are awesome. Friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. I tried the Gumbo Jumbo, it is a combination of the Gumbo and Jambalaya. It is loaded! I put a little spice to it and boom! The chef is from New Orleans so this is authentic, made when ordered, fresh cuisines. They have specials on Thursdays. If you've never heard of or tired a beignet, this is the place to reward your taste buds. They are made fresh so I highly recommend you eat it when you get it. I highly recommend this place. You will become a fan. Bonus info: gospel music playing with great food
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a sweet joint with New Orleans style food. The owners are very charming and you can tell they are very invested in their restaurant and making their customers have a good experience. My date is from Louisiana and says it is good food. I liked what I had to.
google avatar

Kristina C.

Yelp
I have a wonderful friend that loves to share good food and he picked up some food and shared with me. He said the service was great with a short wait. It is New Orleans style menu and vibe. The southern fried okra was perfection and the beignets made me feel like I was in NOLO! No pictures of beignets because we'll they were very yummy and I was excited.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
How was your po' boy? The husband: Sensational! The munchies at Mackey's is nothing short of AHMAZING. When near Orange Park grabbing a gumbo AND beignets. Their food TASTES like the love I see in them. That Mrs. Mackey is the star of the show!
google avatar

Carl K.

Yelp
They have a great selection of delicious foods. Very pleasant staff. Very clean establishment. I'll be back.
google avatar

Amaziah A.

Yelp
The ambiance was warm welcoming and cozy. The food is freshly made and tasted like it as well! The service was excellent, the hostess displayed everything out for us. The beignets are AMAZING! Mr. Mackey's collard greens are probably the best in Jacksonville
google avatar

Vinny M.

Yelp
Best new orleans food in Jax. Best staff(owners around. Shrimp po boys. Service is amazing.
google avatar

Theresa O.

Yelp
Great food great owners and staff, a real feel at home experience. Do you like heat?? They got it! Don't like spice at all? They got it! You choose your level of hotness from 0-5. Some in, dine out, or take home they got you! They also have allot of stuff happening they're all the time so don't miss out, follow off face book.
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
I absolutely wanted to love the food based on their reviews on Yelp, Facebook, and more but maybe it was what I ordered that wasn't the best selection. This is my first time ordering and was not feeling like seafood today so I opted for the beef with debris po boy and I definitely should've got it with rice instead of bread. The overall flavor itself wasn't bad but I think texturally it's what threw me off. Biting into warm beef with gravy then cold shredded lettuce and bread just wasn't for me. I also got a side of Mack & cheese. I hate saying that it wasn't my favorite either. Maybe next time I'm in the mood for New Orleans-style food I'll stick with the po boy but hopefully, this helps someone who hasn't been here before and doesn't know what to choose on the menu. 3 stars because the portions are great.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome food and service!! We have a daughter that lives in Louisiana and we have eaten a lot of Cajun food and this place hits the mark!!
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Discovered this place on accident but I'm so glad I did. The staff is so friendly. Customer service is top notch. I only walked in to order the beignets because of their sign outside but the smell of everything else they were cooking was incredible. I would have ordered more had we not just eaten elsewhere. The beignets were hot and pillowy soft and delicious! Next time I will try the fried okra and a po boy!
google avatar

Yelp
This hidden gem is worth the search! Very casual dining, but excellent food! The fried fish and fried okra are some of the best we've ever had. The etoufee was also delicious. The mac n' cheese was unlike any I've ever had and quite terrific. You can tell the food was made fresh and arrived piping hot at the table. Also, loved the gospel music playing in the background. Definitely worth your time to try!
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Great food, great customer service. Owners are amazing. Love this place!!! The shrimp is always delicious, get the Mack sauce too.
google avatar

Beautiful S.

Yelp
Food is hit or miss. Customer service is the worst. The owner seems nice but she's really a mean and arrogant lady. You should be happy to service in a community but she and her husband are some rude, arrogant people. Do better! Place was clean. I suggest more restaurants open up because the owners of Mackies. don't fully appreciate their customers.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
Delicious cuisine, Carribean atmosphere, down to earth staff and owners. The food is reasonably priced and you definitely get your money's worth.

Leslie S.

Yelp
We loved the fried shrimp, fried okra(my fav), fried green tomatoes(Janet's fav). The Mac and cheese was sweet so that was a little different but still good. I will definitely return in the future. PS... don't forget the beignets.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a jewel, tucked away in OP! One thing I'm really big on is customer service and you get that, plus more at this place. Ms. Mackey makes you feel like you're in a New Orleans Restaurant by the way the place is decorated, and the way she runs the place. Her and Brian, her husband. You even get smooth jazz playing while you eat. The menu is very detailed, and you get a variety of New Orleans inspired dishes, and you can pick the level of spiciness based on your taste tolerance. I ordered the shrimp PO boy, level 2 spice and fries, and an order of fried green tomatoes to share at the table. My boy ordered a bowl of gumbo, level 1 spice and an order of fried okra. My other friend ordered a shrimp wrap instead of the PO boy. EVERYTHING was just right. All their food portions are extremely big, and you will be full. Everything was seasoned perfectly, and the spiciness didn't overpower the actual taste of the food...which is rare now days... seems like you get one or the other. I'm trying to watch my figure so I can't say when I'll be back, but I DEFINITELY recommend if you're in the area, you go check out this spot!
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
The Mackey's know how to make great food and make everyone feel welcomed in their restaurant! The beef with debris is not to be missed when it's on the menu.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
I'd order again but my Cajun/creole food is much better. Food has good flavor but the gumbo is not what I expected at all it was very light in color when it is supposed to be almost a chocolate brown unless they are covering another region. Again it was good but I'm used to something way different.
google avatar

Philip C.

Yelp
Outstanding. Customer service is top notch. First time here and the lady went through the whole menu with me. Ordered the shrimp po boy and gumbo. The po boy came loaded with shrimp and was very good. The bread was super fresh. Some of the best gumbo I have ever had. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
This is the second time that I have tried it. I worked in a New Orleans café when I was younger. I do know how to cook the food and I know how it's supposed to taste. I will see the ambience and the employees that work. There are very welcoming and very charismatic. The food is good I don't think the seasoning matches up to what Cajun food should be. They really use Cayenne pepper to get the heat which they could use other things and other seasonings as well. The jambalaya and basically most of the food that I had definitely needed salt. I know a lot of restaurants are opposed to saltine food but if you're going to a specific type of food and you know it's supposed to be seasoned well that's what I expect. If you're looking for a more authentic Cajun food, this would not be the place. Hot and fresh food yes. But look forward to adding your own seasonings to get the taste that you want if you want more authentic. Their beignets are close to what an original beignet should taste like, but they put way too much powdered sugar on them.

Jenna N.

Yelp
Ordered drop off because I'm at work, ordered extra shrimp, no shrimp at all in my order. Called restaurant, stated that they checked order and there were extra shrimp. Got manager, made it difficult...arguing that they did have a quality control...am i lying? And this manager is short tempered...you made a mistake horribly customer service to correct your mistake

India L.

Yelp
Very friendly owners! We love the fried okra, beignets, gumbo, and po boys. Worth the drive if you don't live in OP
google avatar

Kayla K.

Yelp
Walked in and you immediately feel welcome. The owner Macky is so sweet. The outside patio is super cute and shady. The inside is amazing. It feels like you're walking down New Orleans on Mardi Gras. The food is absolutely delicious. The fried okra and shrimp were lightly batter and fried to perfection. The beignet was fluffy and light. Will definitely being going back.
google avatar

Ernest B.

Yelp
Great family run business. Good food, good value, good quantity. Great experience. We have been there three times and we love Mackey's Munchies. Very friendly people they make feel at home with family when you eat there.
google avatar

Jan B.

Yelp
Our second visit tried the wraps - blackened shrimp and crispy fish - heat level 2. Both delicious - wraps come with Pickels, lettuce, tomatoes and mackie sauce. Also offer spinach wraps which are good. Fried okra delicious. Good size portions. Tuesdays are poboy combo day - so you get drink, fries or max & cheese and poboy for price of po boy. Very friendly but food cooked to order so not fast food.
google avatar

Tarneisha H.

Yelp
Let me start by saying New Orleans is one of my fave places to visit. Mackey's Munchies definitely transport you there. The menu is made up of N.O. classics; Po boys, jambalaya, beignets, etc. My husband has been on a search for a decent po boy in town for some time now. He had the shrimp Po boy, I had the fish and shrimp dinner with Mac and cheese. The fish and shrimp were seasoned and battered perfectly. The Mac and cheese umm not so great. I was born and raised in the south and this Mac and cheese is not cutting it. There was a sweet after taste every time I took a bite, no bueno. Any who, the rest of the food was delicious. I had a side order of crawfish etouffée, the roux was dark and flavorful. The shrimp Po boy had shrimp falling out of all sides and it was the right ratio of bread to filling. The only reason I gave this a 4, is the Mac and cheese and there were no beignets. If your in Orange Park stop by. Honestly I think if the location was more "in town" they'd really stay packed. Maybe there will be a second location soon. The decor was dripping in New Orleans.

Deborah J.

Yelp
The food was so yummy. I shared the big A__ fish poorboy, which is huge, with my sister and my husband had the jambalaya with the shrimp and okra. Everything was perfectly seasoned. I have to say that the owners where so much fun and really made you feel special. I have red hair and Brandy was so sweet by telling me how much she loved my hair, she just made my day. Will definitely return and try more of the menu.

Megan R.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while and I am kicking myself; I forgot how delicious their food is!!! The ambience is perfect for the theme of the restaurant; New Orleans Marci gras!!!!!! Service is excellent from the time you walk in the door until you leave. I am vegetarian and the lady gave me plenty of options to choose from. Just know that everything is good. I also enjoyed the conversation with Mrs. Mackey. The entire staff is very personable, warm, and welcoming. When you go make sure you also get a sweet tea and beignets for dessert! You will thank me!
google avatar

Talitha C.

Yelp
Mackey's Munchies food is delicious! I highly recommend the shrimp po boy, the beignets and the New Orleans two step. The owner Brandye Is friendly and makes sure that customers are satisfied with their meal. Plenty of seating for family and friends to gather. There's also a mini library area for children to select a book and read.
google avatar

Ebonie W.

Yelp
I should be ashamed of this level of greediness...but I'm not!! My favorite (and what I went there for) were the beignets. They were fresh, light and melt in your mouth delicious. The 2nd runner up is the Chicken and Turkey Sausage Gumbo. I will go up to two on the spicy level because the one wasn't spicy at all. 3rd runner up is the Fried fish w/ Crawfish Étouffée. It was little on the salty side but edible. I don't see myself ordering it again. My least favorite is the fried corn. I didn't like the texture, but my son did, he inhaled both of them. I will definitely go back and try their Shrimp Po Boy. Oh, let me not forget the staff. The woman working the front was very helpful and patient. Another person offered to bring my food out to my car because I mentioned I was experiencing back pain and sitting in the chair was uncomfortable. They were awesome!
google avatar

Dani S.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try out some New Orleans food at Mackey's Munchies. Hard to come by a restauarant in Jacksonville. Inels was at the register.. As I waited to be served, I was attentive to her accommodate the patrons in front of me. So pleasant, joyful and she made me laugh as she was talking to the customers. She greeted me with a smile and was so kind and helpful. Service was top tier! She's great but shoutout to the cooks too because the food tasted bombbbbb! I couldn't wait to go home cuz it smelled so good! Gotta go try it!
google avatar

Tip R.

Yelp
I went there on Saturday about 3pm. My first review was at their previous location (Fleming Island) before they moved to this location on Blanding. You order at the counter, pay & they bring the food to your table. The restaurant was clean & I enjoyed the music that was played. I ordered a large Red Beans & rice & a large Chicken & sausage gumbo. The food was served in plastic containers, plastic spoon & paper towels. Red Beans & rice were ok nothing special. I didn't see any hot sauce out anywhere, I'm glad that I brought my own Texas Pete hot sauce. No French bread was served or offered. Chicken & sausage gumbo was not good. They give you a lot of chicken & sausage but the quality of both was not good. Cheap rubbery chicken & sausage was more like hot dogs than good sausage. I know that it is very hard to find good New Orleans type food outside of New Orleans. I also know that small restaurant businesses are having a tough time trying to make it. But letting go on the quality is not the answer. It was not for me.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
This was a great surprise. So glad they are doing it. And the owners are both veterans. Great old school food and service, all at a very reasonable price. The flavors were off the chain, the Po'boy had more shrimp than bread, was beautiful.
google avatar

Ebony D.

Yelp
Food was nice, enjoyed the history more. Shrimp poboy was decent. Just dry. Needed more of the sauce. Recommendation would be to add the sauce on the bread as well as drizzled on top for decoration. Great experience!
google avatar

I J.

Yelp
Go back to NOLA for some real Cajun cuisine cooking lessons. Beignets are NOT yeast rolls sprinkled with powdered sugar.
google avatar

E. C.

Yelp
I had beignets the first day - ate it to go out of the bag. Yummy. I was actually thrifting and not too hungry. I went back today and ate gumbo.it was flavorful and not spicy; it was filling. Yummy too! Definitely want to give a shout out to this business! I should also mention the staff are awesome!
google avatar

Pheachara T.

Yelp
The food is okay but definitely not any where close to New Orleans style food. I would rather go to Copelands
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Have been in Florida for a week now and hands down best food of our trip!!!! Such nice people!!! Great service!!!! We went 30 minutes out of way just to eat here and try their po'boy!!!! Absolutely was worth it!!!!!! Have a 12.5 drive ahead of us still and was happy to drive extra and would do it million more times!!!! Great place really should go try it!!!!!!!!!! Yelp
Louisiana restaurant alert! That means it's time for another episode of "Compliment or Condemn!" I've been to Mackey's Munchies twice now. Wanted to do my best to try a couple of things before giving my opinion. Louisiana is known for our po-boys, with the shrimp po-boy arguably being our most popular one. Mackey's serves one that's authentic but not. Here's what I mean: Everything about it is exactly like back home......an abundance of well-seasoned shrimp, fully dressed the right way, great bread.......except for one thing: The Mack sauce. Mackey adds his own concoction to the shrimp po-boy and MAN, it's slamming!!! I always get an extra and douse it on the sandwich. Now if you're seeking a 100% authentic Louisiana shrimp po-boy, simply ask for no Mack sauce....but if you want to try their own spin on our infamous sandwich, order as is. Either way, you will NOT be disappointed. The other items I checked out were their gumbo, red beans and rice, fried okra and beignets. I'm not a fan of the gumbo to be honest but the red beans do the job. The fried okra should make country bumpkins and city slickers alike rejoice and the beignets are nothing short of divine. They're the best I've had outside of Cajun Country, surpassing the ones I recently tried in Navarre. What helps to really boost the overall experience is the service. Mackey and his wife are remarkably nice and personable. We chatted about our Louisiana roots on my first visit and since he remembered who I was on the second, he showed me some homegrown love. If I want some of dem good ole bayou flavors near Jacksonville, this is where I'm coming. Definitely "Compliment."

Yelp
Beignets in Jacksonville=yes please. I am super excited to find Mackey's Munchies. First, I want to say how nice the staff is at this restaurant. I came on Sunday at 11:50 am. I didn't realize that this establishment opened at 12:00 pm. Justin was kind enough to still take my order ahead of opening. Moving on to the owner, Ms. Mackey. She is wonderful. Like you can tell she has a sweet soul. I mean a bug landed on her and she was so calm. She said even the bugs wanted a little sweetness. I was instantly sold that I would love this place. Food. The food was very good. I had the gumbo and a Po' boy with a combo of fish and shrimp. I went into a food coma. Don't forget dessert. Delicious beignets covered in powdered sugar. It was a great treat to a tasty meal.
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
We had lunch here today and will absolutely be going back again and again! The food was delicious, but the service was even better. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the owners, and were immediately made to feel so welcomed by everyone! I only wish I hadn't filled up so quickly on the lunch because the bread pudding and beignets looked amazing! Pretty sure I'll be going back for dessert soon.

Todd H.

Yelp
Good food! Feels like a food truck with a building attached! I got the etoufee sp? And my wife got jambalaya sp? it was spicy just how I like it, too much for the wife Would've been five stars if our dinner was served on a plate with rice for a little better presentation than plastic to go containers. but if you're looking to get some tasty Cajun style food to go, and you're not in a hurry this is the place. It's the only authentic New Orleans food I know of! Oh plus this Beignets are FIRE !!!!!!
google avatar

Katlyn M.

Yelp
A hidden gem in orange park. Definition of SOUL FOOD. Everything is delicious, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. On top of that the owners are great and super friendly. I love it here!! If you're looking for some real New Orleans style food this is the spot!
