Returned to Macrina for more bread (this time their sour white loaf) and pastries, and just wanted to chime in to add more photos and comment on the new things I've tried. The sour white loaf was better than the Giuseppe (excellent toast!) and you MUST try the orange hazelnut pinwheel. So delicious and a trail of icing throughout the pastry ensures it isn't too dry! Its massive size doesn't hurt, either. Skip the cherry hand pie, which is cute but tastes like they forgot to add sugar. Still 4/5 stars overall!
Avoid ordering their hot chocolate, unless you're into very cinnamon-y beverages (it's made with Mexican chocolate).

I stopped by Macrina yesterday to pick up a post-workout treat and a loaf of bread for family dinner. It was moderately crowded around lunchtime on a weekday, but since nearly all patrons were seated with their food I thought the service to ring up my items was a tad slower than it should have been. I ordered their Giuseppe loaf (kind of like a sourdough, but not particularly sour-tasting) and a cinnamon roll.
The cinnamon roll was tall and narrow, more like a gourmet muffin than the typical short and squat cinnamon roll you'd bake from a tube at the grocery store. It was glazed in this INCREDIBLE cream cheese frosting that drapes over the top of the roll, but sadly doesn't track down into the body of the roll. If you're thinking from my photo that this cinnamon roll needed about 3x more frosting, you'd be right. A cinnamon roll stuffed with a dime-sized column of this frosting would be heavenly. Macrina, are you paying attention? The dough was fluffy, soft, and a tad undercooked, just as a perfect cinnamon roll should be. I also loved the crunchy caramélisés cinnamon bits trailing down the center of the rolTake it home and pair with a glass of milk for maximum enjoyment.
The bread was good, but in a faceoff of very expensive artisanal bread, I'd rather spend my $5 on a loaf from Grand Central Bakery. The Giuseppe loaf just didn't really taste like anything. It did have a great texture and crumb and I didn't feel like I had to yank the crust off from the center of the bread with my teeth, but the flavor was super bland.
