There are places that are not going to be on the radar of many wine aficionados, in wine encyclopedias or be featured for their craft. MacRosie is one of those places. In wine world, despite their age, they are still very much an up and coming winery. They hardly grow any of their own grapes, instead heavily relying on grapes from Sonoma's legendary families.
However, MacRostie has something else that it gets very, very right. The ambiance, the architecture and the surroundings amongst which this winery is created is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Sonoma County. Stunning minimalism and attention to every detail of winery's design creates an atmosphere where you want to spend hours there. The views are truly unparalleled, with a mixture of terrains and tables carefully placed to share the maximum panoramic perspective. It feels like a place that brings it's surroundings within itself.
The people working here are fun, knowledgeable and actually passionate about wine, which to my surprise, is a pretty rare thing in California wine country. In many wineries, the staff that an average guest interacts with are quite clueless about wine, it's production, soil and terroir. This was a huge differentiator and our server/somm, Jack, was spectacular.
To revisit the wine, it's quite excellent. Wildcat Mountain Pinot noir was gorgeous, so was The Key Chardonnay. It might not have the history yet and the rapport of other wineries, but these are good wines. More importantly, MacRostie is a stunning winery to visit. I say more importantly because you can have an excellent bottle of wine in many settings from your favorite producer, but few wineries will leave this sort of lasting impression.
