The Best Boba in Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley | Eater LA

"Macu Tea, a Taiwan-based fruit tea brand, specializes in boba drinks so indulgent they’re dubbed “drinking desserts.” The signature offerings include layered slush drinks featuring seasonal fruits like mango, grape, and strawberry. In addition to the decadent treats, Macu serves refreshing options such as passion fruit green tea, a Yakult series, classic milk tea, and other fruit-infused specialties, available hot or cold. The standout drinks are the mango smoothie variations, available only during mango season. The popular King of Mango Smoothie layers freshly cut mango, grapefruit, coconut milk, and tea jelly for a luxurious experience. For toppings, Macu offers a variety of choices, including boba, coconut jelly, green tea jelly, Bo-Bo agar, QQ (a mix of boba and coconut jelly), Triple Q (boba, coconut jelly, and Bo-Bo agar), and Chi-Chi (salty cheese foam)." - Kristie Hang

Google
They have a tablet kiosk for ordering so it is super convenient. I got the King of Mango Smoothie ($7.50) since it is a top seller. I didn't adjust sugar or ice and it tasted good, not too sweet. The drink was also ready pretty quick, in about 5 minutes. Drink is pretty pricey but it does come with mango pieces, jelly topping and one large size.

Google
A lovely place for tea in Old Pasadena. I think it feels fresher than many tea places because they use fresh fruits. You can also see a large stock of mangoes at the back. The ice level and sweet level can be adjust from 100% to 0% for tea. However (and unfortunately for me), the smoothie and special menu items are not adjustable. I liked everything I ordered. Pricing was about $6-8 per cup.

Google
Boba tea shop in Pasadena. Staff is nice, and lots of different flavors. Nothing ground breaking, but if you're in the mood for some Boba, they will hit the spot.

Eric Cruz

Google
Decent Boba. Had the King of Mango. Real fruit. But not in season. So was a bit tart. So if the mango had been sweeter this would be ace!

Google
- I got the King of Mango Smoothie and it is not too sweet and perfect drink for a hot day. Worker was giving out samples of a passion fruit drink and it was also very good. - A little expensive but the price includes tax and the toppings in the drink already. - Only downside was that the place was a little warm as a lot of customers in a smaller store.

Google
I've been on the hunt for green tea jelly and coffee jelly toppings everywhere, so I was excited to finally find them here. The tea jelly was the perfect touch--light, chewy, and it blended into my drink without overpowering it. My favorite was the Matcha Tiramisu drink--it seriously tasted like cake! I also love that you can customize the sugar level for almost all the drinks. Ordering was super easy with their tablet and I liked that you could see pictures of all the drinks before choosing. Parking was a bit tricky since I went during a busy time, but there's plenty of street parking available.

Google
Macu has the best Green Milk Tea in all of Pasadena! Incredible flavor and always consistently amazing! Most milk tea places have bad bitter tea but Macu is always perfection. I come here multiple times a week because it’s so good!

Google
Solid spot for fruit teas in old town Pasadena. The li-li series is worth a try. The shop itself is tiny inside and barely any seating. It's a grab n go type of place. During the day, they have an employee handing out free samples outside. Parking - find street parking (free or metered) around old town Pasadena or park in the structures. Some places are only $1 for the first 90 minutes.

Yelp
The best tea in Old Town. Super yummy drinks (have yet to order a miss), fast service, generous with toppings and fruit, kind workers... I hope they stay for a long long time... Note: I recommend reducing sweetness level, I usually get 30% and it's still pretty sweet

Yelp
Another solid boba spot in Pasadena! I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of their drinks, especially the fruit drinks! They use fresh ingredients, and the fruits really shined in the ruby grapefruit li-li tea and king of mango! The king of mango is definitely more of a dessert type drink because it's heavier. Parking is tough in Pasadena. I would recommend parking in the farther structure that's way cheaper than the structure right across the street!

Yelp
I've seen Macu Tea before in Taiwan, so I was curious to see how it would taste like here. It's a small shop with just a few tables. Inside was oddly very warm so it doesn't feel quite ventilated in there. My friend wanted to try the Bobo grape smoothie, but apparently that is just a seasonal drink! You'd have to read carefully that it really is a seasonal drink on their menu, which it's a "Autumn" drink. So I got my friend the strawberry one instead. I went to try the boba tieguanyin oolong milk tea, and it was actually pretty good. The drink tastes authentic and the boba was pretty nice and chewy. The price point for their milk tea was surprisingly very affordable. Many places charge around 7-8 but this was about 5-6. Overall, my drink was pretty good for what it is, but I wouldn't say it's the most amazing oolong milk tea I had in my life. I would be curious to try the other drinks next time. Also, I like how their drinks have handles on them like in Asia!

Yelp
The King of Mango smoothie is like biting into a sweet and juicy mango. It is sooo good but sooo sweet. For those of you who doesn't like sweet and fruity drinks, this drink will not be for you. Especially since you cannot customize the drink at all. But it is a nice dessert drink (as advertised). There are chunks of fresh mango, chewy bo-bo, fresh grapefruit bits and a creamy gulp of deliciousness. I really like how the drink came with a strap. In Taiwan, most drinks come in a convenient bag or holder so your hands won't get too cold or hot and so you can take it on the scooter. I'm really happy that Macu carried that over here with their drinks. You order your drinks at the kiosk and wait for your number to pick up your drink. It's a cute quaint tea spot, more for to go orders than to hang out.

Yelp
This boba spot never disappoints! You can't go wrong with their top recommendations--they're always on point. What sets them apart is the quality of their tea base; it's rich and flavorful, not overpowered by sweetness. The milk and cream taste fresh, unlike other places that rely on artificial powders. If you're looking for high-quality boba with real ingredients, this is the place to go! There is only 2-3 small tables to sit and chill, place is good for to-go orders .

Yelp
Fresh fruit is a staple in their offerings, and it's easy to customize drinks to your liking. It's good, but doesn't seem to quite strike the balance between some of its competitors that have also recently opened locations in the have been able to find. The menu is a little difficult to understand, with names such as "Bo-Bo" which is their smoothie series and "Chi-Chi" which is their salted cheese foam series of drinks. The staff is helpful in describing each drink and navigating the drink you want to try, but more photos and descriptions for newbies would be even better.

Yelp
I had heard about this boba shop by word of mouth and was excited to try out the King Mango drink, as I really enjoy mango sago dessert. Dropped by around 4:30 PM on a Sunday and there was only 1 other party waiting for their drinks. We ordered the King of Mango Smoothie and the Tieguanyin Oolong Milk Tea with boba. I had pretty high hopes for the King of Mango Smoothie, however I found the flavor to be lacking a bit. Even after mixing, the pomelo & mango flavors seemed to be a bit overpowered by the coconut milk. I was hoping the mango would be a bit more tart/sweet to somehow differentiate it from the other ingredients, but it was a bit hidden. The oolong milk tea was pretty standard in my opinion with a strong tea flavor. The boba had a nice chew that paired well. Overall, if I were to return I'd likely try other drinks on their top 10 list. They have a lot of unique drinks on their menu, so I think it's definitely worth giving it a shot!

Yelp
Definitely more of a fruit tea place than a standard boba place to get milk tea. Caught me a bit off guard, cuz the first time I had Macu Tea was in NorCal during their Snoopy collaboration (please collab with more franchises please!). I remember walking past here and seeing a crowd going out into the sidewalk, but we came here on a Wednesday night and there was no line. Worker was friendly and our drinks were out quite fast. Lots of fruit teas and slushes. Many of which has fixed sweetness and ice levels, so no customization is available. I got their orange and mango Lili tea which is their summer drink. Nice orange juice taste with sweetness from mango and real mango bits in it. Pretty refreshing. My friend got the winter melon with fresh milk. It's non-caffeinated with set sweetness and ice level, but it's not bad. Not too overly sweet which is good since winter melon leans towards more of a sweet drink. Both of our drinks came with these complimentary drink carriers, which was cute and perfect for pictures. It is a bit pricier here and the options are a bit more limited (think YiFang with less options and a bit pricier), so I'm hoping they expand to keep up with the boba Sengoku Wars that has a grip on Pasadena.

Yelp
Tried the BoBo grape and the BoBo mango teas. Was aight for a refreshing dessert/fun drink. But for me, I'm not likely to return. Fruit tea drinks seem to have really gone off the deep end in terms of price/value especially when buying for a family.

Yelp
Stopped by for a drink. It's in the spot as previous Yi Fang. Can get raucous as Kings Row gastropub is next door! Staff was friendly and explained what "chi chi" and "bo bo" are. They're the cheese foam and boba pearls respectively. You can order on the kiosk if you'd like. Drinks were tasty and you can get as much or as little sugar and ice as you desire.
google avatar

Aurora L.

Yelp
Golden Leaf Milk Tea - 30% sweetness was still overbearing for me on tasting the tea flavor. Boba was excellent, chewy and firm. I plan to come back to try basic black milk tea with boba. Perhaps I will request for a stronger tea flavor, if possible.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Their smoothies are a great addition to the Pasadena boba scene (among Motto Tea, Sunright Tea Studio and Prolece Tea). I got the Chi Chi Grape Smoothie and it was blended well that it wasn't too frozen. The grape jellies reminded me a lot of the Chinese jelly cups I ate growing up, so it was very nostalgic for me. The cheese foam wasn't too thick or salty, which was perfect. I wanted to get it with black boba pearls, but for their smoothies they do not allow any customizing, which is a big shame. My boyfriend got the brown sugar boba milk tea, and I thought this was just alright. The great thing was that at 100% sugar it wasn't too sweet (unlike at Wushiland, you can get it for 80% and it's still too sweet). However, I'd still rather go to Sunright Tea Studio or Motto Tea if I want to get this type of milk tea because I think they do it better. Boba pearls were pretty springy so definitely would get this as a topping.
google avatar

Nina W.

Yelp
100% get the chichi mango smoothie! It's super fresh and the cheese foam is perfect. I drank this entire drink so fast! The tea jelly at the bottom is also perfect. We got a chi chi golden leaf tea as well. It's very light and just average. I think there are other places that do the cheese foam tea better, so best to get their drinking dessert items :) Price is a bit steep but if you're in the area, definitely stop by. The shop is small with no seating but they are fast and efficient with the drinks!
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
Was walking around and saw this new tea shop with grand opening promotions! The staff at the front was passing out sample for their passion fruit tea and informed us about the promotion that was going on. Upon entering you can see cases of fresh mango on the side and a cute little back drop for photos The promotion was for ordering a mango slush and get a green tea free. The mango slush we got was so refreshing and fresh, it also has bits of jello and everything just blend so well. The green tea was also creamy and sweet with the foam on top. Overall I can taste the quality of tea and can't wait to try other flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
Nearly missed it while walking. Macu Teas entrance is nestled in and small hall with a few other stores. Not much inside. Mostly a grab and go location. I got the agar boba mango smoothie. SOO delicious! Sweet, refreshing, and made with fresh fruit. Definitely trying out the other smoothies. Note* the smoothies are NON- customizable. Service was really nice to me even though it took me three times to understand that.

Yelp
Macu Tea is one of the newest additions to the Old Town Pasadena neighborhood! This spot is located right next to a gelato place. There are some parking garages around the area, but street parking will be your best bet. Inside, they do not have any seating so be prepared to grab your drink and go. They have a good selection on their menu with recommendations of their 10 most popular drinks as well. Wifey and I opted to try the Chi-Chi Mango Smoothie and the Orange & Mango Li-Li Tea. Both drinks were super refreshing and were made with some high quality fresh fruit. Overall, this spot is definitely worth a try if you are in the area. What makes them stand out compared to other boba spots nearby is their use of fresh and quality fruits. The staff here are very friendly and efficient. I would recommend trying some of their mango drinks right now since those ones are seasonal for the summer!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Tried a new spot and I am always on the new hunt for a mango pomelo drink and this would be on my top 5 places. Service was fast, place is a bit small in an alleyway across from the gelato shop. I would say give it a go, no complaints here! Their oolong milk tea was really good too. They were giving out samples.
google avatar

Yelp
A lovely place for tea in Old Pasadena. I think it feels fresher than many tea places because they use fresh fruits. You can also see a large stock of mangoes at the back. The ice level and sweet level can be adjust from 100% to 0% for tea. However (and unfortunately for me), the smoothie and special menu items are not adjustable. I liked everything I ordered. Pricing was about $6-8 per cup.
google avatar

Yelp
A new favorite tea/boba spot! They are located in Old Town Pasadena, right next to Hello Gelato. We ordered the King of Mango Smoothie and it was perfect--not too sweet with all natural ingredients. Usually artificial sugar is added to smoothies like this but Macu didn't add any; all the sweetness came from the fresh mangoes. Service was fast and everyone was friendly. I saw the workers made a free drink for the delivery person to show their appreciation. Space is small though and they don't have any seats (yet?); they do share the bathrooms with kingsrow pub down the hallway. You order through self-ordering kiosk inside. Will be back to try other drinks!
google avatar

Yelp
I walked past this store in downtown Pasadena and turned around due to the posters of their signature mango drinks in their front window. I ordered the "Chi Chi Mango Smoothie" which consists of mango smoothie w/ pulp, "Chi Chi"(cheese foam), and green tea jelly. It's cute how they have their own phrases for their toppings. The Mango Smoothie tasted so fresh and refreshing. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. The cheese foam went perfectly with the mango smoothie. It was my first time trying green tea jelly as a topping and I think it was ok. It's a bit softer in texture and not chewy like boba. I personally prefer the chewiness in my toppings. There were also pieces of mango which made the drink even more mango-y. The service was immaculate! The lady was very patient explaining everything to me and gave so many recommendations. They were even handing out samples of their mango orange tea. It was so good, I came back the next day and got a Jasmine Green Tea with QQ noodles. The tea was very fragrant and floral-y.

Yelp
They were quite busy when I visited on a recent Sunday afternoon. The owner was apologetic but glad to see they are doing well. I ordered the #1 King of Mango with pulp, coconut milk, and green tea jelly. It was super refreshing and thirst quenching since I had just finished a long bike ride. I see the boxes and boxes of mangoes along their wall. The drink was not too sweet, however it's not tart either. I love the cute handle holder which is very useful. My only complaint they need to have more than one kiosk to order drinks. The couple in front of me literally took a really long time to place their order because they couldn't decide what they want. Here's hoping Macu Tea will do well and expand to other locations since in Old Pas you gotta park kinda far away.
google avatar

Andy T.

Yelp
Macu Tea is located in the Old Town Pasadena area. This was the pick for an after dinner dessert. I went on a Friday night and it was slightly busy. The store is small and only ideal for pickup. There are a few tiny chairs to sit and wait for your order. I got the Chi-Chi Mango Smoothie. Really loved that they used fresh mangos for the drink. It was good and not too sweet! If interested, you can also ask the staff for the little red pouch to hold the drink.
google avatar

Tesia L.

Yelp
Really cute ambiance as I walk into the store. It's located on a heavy foot and car traffic street on Colorado. Will need to pay for parking on the meters. I got the king of mango smoothie. It's already 50% sugar so not that sweet at all. Staff members are very nice and helpful with their menu items. Would definitely come again but maybe have some pick up real quick so I can avoid paying the meter if so. Fresh fruits, mix of coconut milk and the jelly was great. Hefty price of 7.25 but would go back to try some other options if I was in the area again. The cafe is small and not suitable for seating at all. Was lucky to have it be empty when I visited so it was a fast execution for the order.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
I tried Macu Tea last night! I had the Tieguanyin Oolong Milk Tea 10% sweet. Let's just say that this is one of the best drinks that I've had. The tea isn't too strong. I prefer that because stronger teas just make me jittery. I loved it so much that I came during lunch today with my sister. The employees are friendly. The place is clean. They provide samples and give you a cute cup holder for your drink. I am coming back.
google avatar

Brandon K.

Yelp
Not a bad tea spot. Right next to the Gelato spot if you aren't sure where it is. I usually park in the structure and pay the $1 for 2 hours of parking. Place is small so if there is a lot of customers ahead of you might take some time. We only had 2 drinks and still took about 10 minutes to get our drinks and it wasn't that busy when we got there. Drinks overall were good. Had some tea flavor and wasn't too sweet base on the sweetness I put.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
It is created using fresh mangoes, coconut cream, and green tea jelly. Customers like the refreshing and natural sweetness. Macu Tea serves a variety of drinks, such as milk teas, fruit teas, and smoothies. The Chi-Chi Mango Smoothie and Bo-Bo Strawberry Smoothie are two popular options. Overall, it appears to be an excellent place to have a refreshing drink if you're in the the area.
google avatar

Xixi H.

Yelp
I've never had Chi-Chi before but it was so yummy!! I was assuming it would be similar to cheese foam on boba, and it was, but with a more fun name. I got the strawberry and I loved mine. My husband got the grape because we'd seen a special offer on Yelp for a freebie with purchase but unfortunately we didn't get any freebies and he wasn't a huge fan of the grape. The strawberry was excellent though . They also came with these adorable holders which made it easier to take our drinks back to our car!
google avatar

Rosy S.

Yelp
I ordered the new grapefruit drink, which was not bad. service was quick and easy. ambiance was nice. Overall, it was okay, not the best.
google avatar

Steph M.

Yelp
Their grape smoothie is so good! It tasted so fresh and the grape pulp and jellies were a nice add. The service was quick and the staff was friendly. I also had the king of mango smoothie which was just alright. I had higher expectations for that one as I love all of the ingredients in it, but it was just a miss for me. Maybe it was an off day for the mango drinks.
google avatar

Sophie C.

Yelp
Tried this new boba spot but was very disappointed by their boba because it had 0 sugar. I'm not talking about the Tieguanyin Oolong Milk Tea, which I ordered 100% sweetness. The boba itself had no sweetness to it whatsoever, which made it unpleasant to eat. Even though it's not brown sugar boba, I'm wondering if they forgot to add sugar at all. The inside is modern and clean, but service was slow. You order at a kiosk but there's nowhere to sit, except 3 child sized chairs. Won't be back, unless I hear their boba improves.
google avatar

B C.

Yelp
Located right along E Colorado Blvd in Old Town Pasadena, Macu Tea's storefront gives a bright, welcoming vibe as you approach. It shares an entrance with a few neighboring spots, but once you're inside, the focus shifts to the warm, lively atmosphere of the tea shop itself. The staff member who took my order was a standout, her energy and charm immediately making the experience feel personal. She recommended the Orange & Mango Li-Li Tea at 30% sweetness, a suggestion I'm glad I followed. The drink was refreshingly balanced, with pieces of mango adding texture and bursts of natural sweetness, perfectly complementing the smooth tea base. The interior is modern and inviting, with playful, low-to-the-ground seating that adds a cozy touch. As I sipped my tea, I knew I'd be back, not just for the drink, but for the warmth and energy that made this tea stop memorable.
google avatar

Tonny V.

Yelp
I was here when it's still soft opening and also here the first day of grand opening. I love their drinks. High quality; using all real fresh fruits. Love King Mango smoothie, and the orange passion fruit green tea and orange mango green tea. It's a small boba shop, mostly for takeout because they don't really have much space not table and seats to sit around. The service is excellent; helpful and friendly. They let you try out drinks. And most importantly their drinks aren't too sweet which I like. I will come back again to try more drinks.
google avatar

Victoria A.

Yelp
Delicious King Mango smoothie! Made with coconut cream, mangoes, and jellies. Love the sweetness level- doesn't taste overly sweet and artificial. Just a refreshing, sweet mango flavor. Perfect for summer and this damn hot over 90 degree weather. Loved the Chi Chi golden tea with boba. Chewy boba with sea salt cream. Novel boba store with refreshing flavors! Easy self serve ordering process with quick service.
google avatar

Pauline T.

Yelp
I ordered the king of mango smoothie after seeing the wall of mangoes. I mean how can you not! It didn't disappoint although you can't adjust the sweetness on the mango smoothies it's not overly sweet. There's a mix of blended mangoes, coconut milk, grapefruit, and green tea jelly. So there's enough tart and slight bitter to cut the sweet. It's a perfect harmony!
google avatar

Kelli W.

Yelp
Excited Macu Tea has finally arrived in LA! They've been a longtime staple up in Vancouver and are well known for their stellar fruit teas. Similar to the Vancouver locations they only use the best fruits. I ordered the mango smoothie and can attest that it tastes exactly like the ones I've had up north - perfectly in season mango chunks, creamy and sweet coconut milk, and that perfect smoothie texture. My bf also got the mango/orange LiLi tea and it was super refreshing during this latest heat wave in SoCal. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

A L.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this new tea place after we got boba tea from another store down the road. It's still in its soft opening. Small store, no seating inside. The girl behind the counter was very helpful in explaining some of the ingredients as they have unfamiliar terms which are not the usual you see at boba tea shops. They seem to be quite popular even though they're new. Ordered the Bo-Bo Mango smoothie since I didn't want any dairy. If you love mangoes, you'll love this drink. I really liked the jelly in it too. Just wished it was a much colder drink since it was 95F today. The store felt warm too so maybe the AC needs to be cranked up more on a hot day. Interesting menu overall, will have to try more of their drinks next visit.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
One of the few places that sells winter melon drinks. They have a lot of drink and toppings. 100% sweetness was too sweet for me so I recommend halving the sweetness. Each drink comes with a nifty drink holder with a handle that keeps your drink upright. The inside doesn't have a lot of room or seating and can crowded if a lot of people are waiting for their orders. Will be coming back to try their other drinks!
google avatar

Sandy M.

Yelp
Wow this location is right in middle of downtown and it's super hard to find parking. I came in the evening and there wasn't a line and the drink came out shortly. I ordered the king of mango smoothie and it was very refreshing. Cannot adjust sugar here but it wasn't overly sweet or overly artificial tasting. Love the tea jelly pieces in the drink. Would definitely get this drink again.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
While drinks are good, service is so slow, no people, 4 employees in the back, took almost 20 mins to make a drink for one order. Really bad, will probably will not come back here again unless we are in the area. Unacceptable!!!
google avatar

Steph C.

Yelp
tried the bo-bo mango smoothie today - I was worried about not being able to customize sugar and ice levels, but it was not too sweet at all! (not too sweet = highest recommendation)
google avatar

Charlene H.

Yelp
Truly recommend the King mango smoothie it is bomb. Their mango drinks all around are truly the best and definitely one of my favorite drink places.
google avatar

Ruby L.

Yelp
The Ruby grapefruit tea with less sugar is refreshing and fantastic, just the perfect drink for a hot day!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Macu Tea after ~2 weeks since their grand opening. I have heard good things even from friends from Taiwan. Drinks were decent. They were giving out samples of their Tieguanyin Oolong Milk Tea. Staff was friendly, but service was pretty slow. I waited over 15 minutes for our drinks and there wasn't any customers ahead of us.
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
Came here to try their mango drink but they ran out of mangos for the day. I got the BoBo Strawberry smoothie which include crystal boba and their tea jelly which was so good! The smoothie was really refreshing and you tell they use real ingredients. It is a fixed drink so no sugar or ice levels can be adjusted. I would come back to their mango drink next time!
google avatar

Alec M.

Yelp
This boba shop is fantastic! The drinks are flavorful and really fresh especially the bo-bo strawberry. They definitely use fresh fruits! The service is top-notch, staff are friendly, and welcoming. Great place for a quick treat with friends.
google avatar

Jj L.

Yelp
We had the BEST boba drinks at their Irvine shop that we found our way to this Macu tea shop in Pasadena. LOVE their Chi Chi passion fruit with grass jelly- it's one of a kind!!
google avatar

Jo T.

Yelp
The king of mango is my #2 fav drink of all time. I'm obsessed with mangos. Will be sad to see it go once the grapes take over! I wish I could add boba to it but that and the wish for some seating are my only gripes. Really kind and lovely workers.
