Downtown Chicago’s Iconic Macy’s Flagship Could Get a Rooftop Bar - Eater Chicago

"The Macy’s downtown flagship on State Street could get a rooftop bar. The Tribune reports that the new owner of the classic Loop building’s upper floors hopes to build a deck on the rooftop with an enclosed bar, food and beverage service, and an event space with live entertainment, pending city approval. Some of the upper floors could also turn into more restaurants, bars or retail, in addition to the Walnut Room and food court that’s already on the seventh floor." - Daniel Gerzina

Fantastic Selection & Sales – But the Building Shows Its Age Macy’s on Michigan Avenue remains one of the most iconic department stores in Chicago, and it still delivers when it comes to shopping. The selection is excellent—from designer brands to everyday essentials, you’ll find a wide range of fashion, home goods, accessories, and beauty products. I’ve always appreciated the well-curated collections and frequent sales, especially during seasonal promotions or clearance events. There’s almost always a good deal to be found. The staff are generally helpful, and the layout is what you’d expect from a massive multi-floor department store. Escalators and elevators are functional and usually well-marked. That said, the building itself is clearly aging. While it holds historic charm, it’s also due for some serious maintenance and modern updates. Restrooms, for example, are only available in the basement, and they’re not easy to locate. For such a large store in a major tourist and shopping district, having just one public restroom tucked away is inconvenient—especially for families, seniors, or anyone with accessibility needs. Some areas of the store—ceilings, lighting, even floor tiles—feel a bit worn down. It’s not dirty, but it could use some investment to match the quality of the shopping experience. Still, if you’re looking for variety, big-brand names, and regular discounts, Macy’s Michigan Avenue is absolutely worth the visit. Just don’t expect modern mall-level polish.

Google
This place is huge! It has 13 floors. It has free restrooms which is a huge plus and it has so many things to look at. Amazing design on the inside.

Google
Got these two sets today. A black women named Tracy who worked in the fragrance section had helped me. She was so pleasant and forth coming. She helped with everything we needed help with and she was patient while also having a great eye for what we may have wanted.

Went to Macy's in Chicago to admire the historic architecture. It did not disappoint! Highly recommend architecture buffs stopping by when in Chicago.

Was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Lots of levels meant so much shopping to choose from. Was great we were able to grab lunch there too in the food court.

Google
We were in town to see some concerts & stopped in for some shopping. The interior of the building is enough to stop in, if you're into those types of things. The Tiffany tiled ceiling is beautiful. And some of the touches here and there, the building is really interesting. Loved the fountain in the men's dept. Macy's is Macy's, unless you're in this one. It's ginormous and there's plenty of options to choose from. It definitely had more to choose from than the closest Macy's to me in our "mall." Staff blows hot and cold depending on who's helping you, but overall a positive experience. Picked up some great items.

Google
This is the only remaining store in downtown Chicago from this group, but it is well stocked and you can find everything. The staff is very friendly and helpful in any search for goods, especially clothes. I highly recommend it because you can save yourself the trouble of going to many places at the same time. The prices are reasonable, not like some of the neighboring stores that have the same goods at triple the price, which is illogical. The place is convenient and you can park in the nearby parking lots, so shopping becomes a pleasure.

Google
I had a wonderful experience shopping at Macy’s! The store was clean, well-organized, and offered a fantastic selection of quality products across departments—from clothing and shoes to home goods and beauty. The staff were courteous, helpful, and genuinely attentive. I especially appreciated how easy it was to find what I needed, and the checkout process was quick and smooth. Macy’s continues to be a reliable and enjoyable place to shop, whether you’re looking for the latest fashion trends or practical everyday items. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Never have I been so enamored with a department store! The Macy's on State St is a staple and with good reason. It's MASSIVE, so if you're there purely for some shopping, you're sure to find something for anyone on your list. Six stories of selections, beautifully arranged, and with some gorgeous pieces for all. If you're there to soak in the history, there's plenty to see as well. As the original Marshall Fields flagship store, Macy's does a wonderful job of keeping the old timey feel of a once bustling department store of the early 1900s and combining it with the modern shopping trends. The magic of Marshall Fields is kept alive through the large selection of Franco Mints and the Franco viewing kitchen on the 7th floor, the vaulted atrium ceiling, the Christmas tree viewing at The Walnut Room, and the iconic 45 foot Christmas tree. An absolute must see if not for anything but admiring that a department store can offer so much more than just clothes.

Yelp
There's something to be said about an old school department store, particularly a flagship one like this Macy's. I don't spend a lot of time downtown but I periodically enjoy browsing the store, especially when it's decorated for the holidays. It's so grand and feels some sort of magical. I recently stopped in to do a spot of holiday shopping and was pleasantly surprised. The salespeople were present but not pushy, and were very knowledgeable about their products. I stopped by the Kiehl's area of the beauty section and the sales associate (I want to say Keith? I misplaced my receipt with his name on it) sold me on a kit of men's products. I was glad I gave more information about my partner's skin concerns as I would have bought the wrong one. I really like the food goods section, they are tempting and make wonderful gifts. I also really enjoy their "Backstage" section which is basically like Marshall's. I was able to pick up a few gifts for my niblings without breaking the bank. Like a Marshall's, that section was a bit chaotic but wasn't really disorganized. I wish the signage pointing to that section were a bit clearer as I had to wander the entirety of the bottom floor before finding it, but I guess that's extra steps, right?

Yelp
I am so disappointed with Macy's, especially at Christmastime. First, the store seems to always be messy and dirty year round. Fields would always be so clean with a friendly staff. The staff at Macy's downtown Chicago seems like it's a chore for them to be there. The window displays at Christmas are lacking. Nothing like the awesome windows of years past with Marshall Fields. The only saving grace with the downtown. Macy's is the Walnut Room Christmas tree. It's still stunning.

Yelp
I purchased several items on Macys.com and one of those items were a pair of boots which were shipped by the seller, a 3rd party. I went into Macys store to return the boots, and I was told they couldn't because they had no proof I received the boots in their system. I produced the boots, the shipping label from the seller and the box with the UPS label. After speaking with 7 different people including supervisors I was refer to the 3rd party for a refund. I cannot get into touch with them and Macys is telling me it's not their problem and I have boots I can't wear. Bad customer service. their supervisor is reading from a script and they were rude. They refused to give me their managers name or allow me to speak to one. The 3rd party seller is Rag Co LllLC Macys did not want to help me and customer service is not good. I got so upset, I got sick my blood pressure was raised. My rating is a zero... Carmen at Orland Park tried to assist me.

Yelp
Always enjoy this Macy's. They are located in the heart of downtown and have a wide selection of items.

Yelp
2 stars because of their large inventory. Beyond that, a mess. Staff kept pointing us in different directions which didn't lead us to what we were looking for. Let to a confusing & frustrating experience. Bathrooms filthy. Entire store looked bad and was a huge turn off. A disgrace compared to the former Marshal Fields!!

Yelp
I popped in to cool off a little bit found a very pleasant surprise on the lower level of Macy's. They have a wine bar. I was pressed for time so really wasn't able to enjoy the entire wine collection, but trust me when I say I will be back and I will be spending a significant amount of time in here to enjoy and indulge on the wine options. If you are seeking wine in downtown Chicago stop by this location from what I saw and from the picture I posted, the wine selection looks amazing.

Yelp
We stopped in this Macy's while we were in Chicago visiting during the holiday season. It was a nice Macy's had a lot of good decorations and decor. The atmosphere was very very nice service. We didn't get waited on or spoken to so I can't really talk about that value. It was a little more expensive I guess in downtown Chicago

Maryclaire C.

Yelp
What an embarrassment this store has become under the Macy's label. I cannot believe this used to be the renowned flagship Marshall Fields store. At the height of Holiday shopping season and we couldn't find any sales help or an open cashier station on the first floor except at the returns/refunds area that looked more like a grocery store self checkout. The clothes in the women's section were jumbled up all over each other. Buy the worst experience by far was the 7th floor women's bathroom that was so dirty and littered up it looked more like a bus station. Absolutely disgusting. All the flashy ornaments and lights in the world on the giant Xmas tree in The Walnut Room can't make up for the non-existent service help, the dirty bathroom & rumpled overfilled racks of clothing crammed into the aisles. At least the Frango mints were everywhere. Just no cashiers to take our money.

Yelp
Block off half a day of your travels to the city if you plan to come here. This Macy's is HUGE! My goodness, when I thought it ended, there was something on the other side of the wall. I had a blast in here, I didn't get to experience every dept, but I walked through all of them. Just walking through them gave me jealousy because there was so many things I wanted to purchase but time didn't allow me the pleasure. This Macy's is multi-level, the elevator was down during my visit, so I got a workout as I shopped. Staff were kind. The biggest portion of my time was spent going through the many options available to me at the moment. I found everything I wanted and then some. I hope this Macy's doesn't go anywhere. I'll be back to look at the stuff I didn't get to.

Yelp
So many great deals with the sales for the pre Black Friday extravaganza! I had no clue about this until I walked into the store. Lots of things are 60 and 70% off but the majority are 25% off. Now everything's overpriced so everything is already marked up about 30%, so with the 60 and 70% off it was a steal! Ended up buying a few Christmas ornaments, would have been about $200 but got it for $60! Cha-ching $ ! Really enjoyed walking around a childhood memory of Toys R Us. Now it's not the same as the brick and mortar locations from many years ago. But it was nice to see the logo and the giraffe ! Everything was well organized and kept In each department on every floor. The outside store window decorations are a bit blah. They're not what they used to be when it was Marshall Fields. Still enjoyed seeing them, sadly just not the same -(

Yelp
Best place to go during the holidays the windows are great the festivity is just great in that area I would recommend

Yelp
My girlfriend bought some boots and a pair of heels and she loves what she bought! We also received exceptional service from a shoe sales representative named Anna. She was so helpful and friendly!! Kudos to Anna!

Yelp
I am a loyal Macy's customer but have found that I have gone online than into their stores lately. Visiting Chicago, I thought I'd stop into this Macy's to see what's up. It was quiet in here for a Saturday but the place looked great and I saw several employees on the floor. When I asked one guy for directions, he practically took me there when I believe many would have just pointed in the right direction. This location is pretty big!

Charles H.

Yelp
Macy's mistakes item in stock on its website and leads you to believe they have stock on sale. Won't shop with them again
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
The downtown store is quite a sensory overload to me. One of the largest cosmetics areas I've seen with lots of displays. Somehow I missed where the Barbie movie promo displays were ! I did see in the shoe dept. all the Barbie shoe displays though. I can't remember how many floors this store was, but it took over an hour to look through this Macy's. I'll be adding more Macy's pics as I find time...
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
This is not only the biggest Macys I've ever seen but probably the biggest store I've ever been in. There are 7 floors and a lower level. It used to be Marshall Field's and they tried to keep a lot of that charm in the staircases, elevators, and there's even the original water fountains. We looked at women's clothes first on the 4th floor and it was pretty much what you'd expect from a department store. Then we went down to the lower level because I love Macy's Backstage and what?? There was a wine bar, a bookstore, a candy store, and a Starbucks. Every corner was a surprise. My home Macy's does not have anything like that so I guess they better get on it. There's also another Starbucks on the street level entrance.
google avatar

Ross R.

Yelp
Macy's is responsible for a section of the Pedway that runs through their building. I walk the pedway at least once a day, if not 3 or 4 times a day. Macy's section is the only one that consistently has unhoused people in the middle of the walkway. At all hours of the day, in plain site from inside the store. It's clear that Macy's doesn't care if people pass out, urinate, or panhandle in the basement of their building.
google avatar

Nina H.

Yelp
My mother used to take me to Macy's during the holiday season when it was under the Marshall Field's name. We would do a little shopping, have lunch and take in the elaborate Christmas displays. Visiting Macy's around wintertime was always a magical thing for me growing up. The entire store is decked out and Christmas music went on nonstop. Two things I missed when it was under the Marshall Field name was: #1) The old Sanrio store #2) The Frango chocolates section. The department store has something for every age and gender. There's multiple levels which can be accessed by escalator and elevator. There is a second set of escalators with 360-degree views so if you're afraid of heights, elevators are available. I also like how the main entrances have street names up top to help orient you when exiting the store. Regardless of all the change over the decades, architectural wonders within Macy's remain. Two come to mind. The beautiful Tiffany Favrile glass ceiling and the Walnut room. Dining in the Walnut Room is a must while visiting Chicago. However, if I had to choose a time to visit the Walnut Room, the best time to go is in December. The dining room has a themed menu for the holidays with classic favorites like Mrs. Hering's 1890 chicken pot pie and the Frango mint pie. If you're lucky to score a seat in the main room, you'll dine around the gigantic lighted tree center stage. The Walnut room begins to take reservations early October. If you plan to secure a reservation, you'll want to book this far out on Open Table.

Yelp
This Macy's is giant, so if you have time to search, it is likely you can find what you are looking for, as they carry everything from clothing to home goods. The building itself is historic and beautiful, so it's worth stopping in just to take a closer view. On the bottom floor of the building, in the Pedway, there's a beautiful display of historic stained glass windows that is worth a look! However, because it is a historic building, the layout is sprawling and it is difficult to figure out where to find what you are looking for. There are often decent sales happening, but the racks of clothing get so chaotic that I find it stressful. I found the perfect dress for an event, but needed another size. It is really hard to find employees, so I ended up having to wait in the check out line for almost 30 minutes since only a handful of registers are open. When I finally got to the front, I was told they couldn't order another size online, but that there was "maybe" one dress in the size I needed somewhere in the store. I asked if someone could help me locate it, but the best she could do was tell me 3 different general areas it could possibly be. After searching those areas for a little over an hour, I gave up. If you have time to kill and want to browse, Macy's is a great option, but if you need something specific or want a little more assistance from an employee, I would recommend skipping Macy's and heading to one of Chicago's smaller boutiques where they have more organized inventory and can provide better assistance.

Kendra M.

Yelp
Stay away from the furniture. Poor quality and they don't stand behind the merchandise
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
This is a beautiful classic looking Macys in the heart of downtown Chicago. Lots of floors with everything and anything that you could be looking for. One downside is that there is no dedicated parking structure/lot for customers. If you want to drive to this location, you will need to pay a steep price to park. The subsidized parking in the nearby structure is very expensive (only $2-$3 off from the regular downtown Chicago rate). Alternatively you could try to find street parking, however those spots are few and hard to come by in this area during prime hours.
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
The Macys in Chicago is THE largest department store in the US...well according to the information we received from the tour guide. I can not recall the amount of levels the store had but it was a lot and AMAZING! I mean the decor was the best I've seen in a very long time! In addition to the decor and items to shop for, you could also have the opportunity to grab a light bite to eat! I guess they weren't lying when they said "It's levels to this" ha! Until next time!!
google avatar

Kimmie R.

Yelp
Macys has stepped up their game! 1) They've done numerous renovations and the store looks more modern without losing its authentic vintage feel. The old water fountains from the 1920's are still there even though they don't work they have a plaque in the wall explaining what they were. 2) They sold half the building and it was renovated into fancy office space. The office side looks elegant and modern. All of the updates make it feel like a good place to be. 3) They have hired better staff. They went out of their way to help me every time I had an issue. It wasn't pushy. It wasn't like a commission based thing, it all just felt like excellent customer service. 4) The deals are incredible these days. I'm not sure what changed. Macys use to be so over priced. I went in there and got a few pairs of pants, and a shirt for barely $80 after discounts. These are higher end well made clothes, so I'm very impressed. 5) They've increased security. More security tags, more security cameras, and guards. Decreased thefts = a safer place to shop for the rest of us. I heard about the smash and grabs and no one wants to shop near that madness so this level of security is needed. I hope they keep it up!

Yelp
I rarely go to Macy's anymore, but I thought I'd stop in to get some Clinique toner yesterday morning. Krystal at the Clinique counter was incredibly rude.

Dan U.

Yelp
Macy's has dropped the ball!! For the past several weeks, I have been unable to buy Frango chocolates online. The so called Black Friday sale was a joke, as there was no stock. Now after Thanksgiving, what stock they do have has been priced gouged! A pound of Frango chocolates for $70 each! RIDICULOUS! Especially since the "Black Friday Sale" was $12 a pound. I called and was told that Macy's would honor that price under their 'historic pricing records'. I have spent well over two hours the past few weeks online and with customer service and as of today, there are still no Frangos! At this point, this high demand item is not available online and although I am from Chicago, where we had Marshall Fields, I do not live in a state with a Macy's. So I am unable to simply drive to a store and purchase them (if they are even in stock at the store??) Looks like many people will miss out this Christmas. IF Macy's goes out of business, it is obvious why.
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
Classic old school multi-story level Macy's, which is a dream that I do not see often, compared to the NY location with multi-levels and the San Francisco one. We tried the restaurant at the top that looked like an opera house where they are famous for the chicken pot pies. They had a huge water fountain inside which was impressive. Plenty of designers and brands to shop and try on!
google avatar

Tinisha B.

Yelp
I was out shopping for a late Christmas gift and had the pleasure to work with Rose. She helped me find the perfect orange Ralph Lauren hoody and even assisted me with finding a box for the gift. She made sure she was patient and even gave positive feedback when I asked for help. The store was reasonably busy for the after holiday rush, I was very happy to be able to get the assistance I needed while shopping. Thank you Rose and thank you Macy's
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Classic department store with surprisingly good selection and deals. The Walnut Room is almost as old Marshall Fields customers will remember. Salespeople are better than expected.
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoy having this iconic location as my local Macy's. Yes, the store was better when it was Marshall Field's. Macy's sometimes doesn't compare favorably to that bastion of retail commerce. It's a real mix of high and low, and I find myself really checking for quality of fabrics, stitching, etc. when I shop here. I always check out the sales, and often get some great deals on end of season shoes and boots. Macy's does some deep discounts, but you really have to dig through a bit of a mess to find anything. Petites is also a mixed bag...good for dresses, not so much for pants and separates. Having said that, I often can find what I'm looking for when I shop here, so 4 stars is it. The building itself is a big part of the draw; they just don't make department stores that look like this anymore. It has the same vibe as Macy's Herald Square in midtown Manhattan. Service has always been helpful, but sometimes you do have to go looking for a sales associate. Sometimes I wish they'd pull some of those perfume spraying people off the first floor and spread them around the store more.

Carrie M.

Yelp
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE - EVER Someone opened an account using my telephone number. I called "customer service". All of the customer service numbers require you to have an account. I don't have one. I finally found a way to get to a live person. She said the fraud department would send me a letter in 7 days. After I hung up, I realized she didn't ask for my address. I tried calling back and once again got caught up in the neverending circle of we need your account number. Tried to find a corporate number to register a complaint...no luck. Obviously, Macy's doesn't care about customer service. Wish I could have awarded a big fat zero on stars.

Shelia J.

Yelp
Macys is ok for shopping but if you need to resolve any issue, the customer service is the worse I've ever encountered.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience at Macy's. Went with my son to get some dress clothes and suit. The service was excellent. She was attentive and informative making it quite easy to make decisions. They had a sale going on and received some very nice discounts. Also went to the shoe department and enjoyed the same level of service. I wish all my shopping experiences were as good as this.
google avatar

Yee D.

Yelp
It's just basic. Nothing here really feels special, it just feels like more expensive Sears or JCPenney crap. Know what I mean? When this place was in its former glory as Marshall Field's, it was an experience of the five senses. They don't really think like this as Macy's. The soul is gone from the place.

Shannon F.

Yelp
Incredibly rude staff in women's shoes. Didn't speak a word to them and they felt the need to make rude comments towards us. Don't bother.
google avatar

Spartacus S.

Yelp
Downtown Chicago Macy's @ the Walnut Room I went to downtown Macy's to shoot photos of Macy's gigantic Christmas Tree located on the 7th floor of the department store in the atrium of the Walnut Room restaurant. Macy's always has a beautiful tree in the Walnut Room to celebrate Christmas and this year was no different. This is Macy's 2019 Christmas Tree. Merry Christmas Chicago !
google avatar

Andy G.

Yelp
Yes we all bemoan the loss of Marshall Fields, but this store is iconic and quintessentially Chicago. Marshall Field was the Jeff Bezos of his time making shopping a destination experience instead of a chore. What I appreciate most are the priceless decorative elements which are simply no longer found in modern buildings. Foremost of which is the Louis Comfort Tiffany ceiling. From the ground floor of the main retail space, look up and you will behold a masterpiece. I'd be interested in knowing how many people have passed through here without looking up. Another iconic decorative element is the annual Christmas tree displayed in the Walnut dining room. Each year a different theme such as The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is featured. People also enjoy viewing the Christmas window displays. Each year I make an annual pilgrimage to partake of the Christmas festivities.
google avatar

Orest S.

Yelp
This is a very nice building inside and outside. Number of famous brands. I would recommend visiting it.
google avatar

Selma L.

Yelp
This store really comes to life around the holidays. It's is a very expansive store with a lot to see and explore. Very extensive fragrance selection, you department etc. I wouldn't come here regularly, as there are other Macys locations closer but it's worth stopping by if you are in the city.
google avatar

J. C.

Yelp
This store is a big maze of mediocrity! I stopped in recently because it was the only store open in the area and I needed a few last minute items before my trip the the next day. Needless to say, it was mostly a waste of time. WHERE ARE THE FASHIONS?? After circling the maze of the floors looking for the Contemporary department or anything "current" other than basic jeans, office-wear, misc. casual wear for mature women and evening wear for mothers of brides, I finally gave up! I don't know what happened to this store since Macy's took over, but I'm sure that Marshall Field's is rolling over in his grave!

Charlotte P.

Yelp
Unbelievably slow. The whole purpose of online pickup is to get your things quick and head out other wise you would be shopping for it on your own. When I got there there was 2 associates at customer services, then 1 left for 20 minutes and came back walking really slow. Then their systems take forever to load. Your better off going the extra distance to a Macys at the suburbs than coming here.
google avatar

Miles H.

Yelp
Employees glued to cell phones, broken escalators, surly and clueless staff who make no effort to assist customers, long wait times to check out. We joke that we come to State Street Macy's when we want to be left alone. Do yourself a favor and walk up the street to Nordstrom
google avatar

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
I have to admit a little resentment still bubbles up when I come in here, as I grew up with Marshall Field's and just cant/won't imagine anything else in the space. I do like how they go through SO much trouble to decorate for the holidays, Independence day and Spring. We had some time to kill before a movie at Siskel so we browsed the odd yet fascinating Journey to Paradoisis exhibit. We met on 7 without realizing you have to start the story on level 1! We just worked our way down and looked at the arrangements of clothes and flowers. There were some good deals there, with pleasant, non-pushy salespeople. I definitely want to go back but not spend a fortune.

Olia D.

Yelp
I really love this place, because it's located two blocks away from my home. I like to come here during cold weather and shop or just walk around and check some stuff. This Macy's is huge, 8 or 9 stories if I'm not mistaken. It has two Starbucks cafes inside, restaurant on the last floor, furniture department and many many floors with clothes. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars it's because it needs some upgrades, which indeed Macy's is doing, but not fast enough. First floor looks nice and upgraded, but the others ones not. They really need to replace those dirty carpets and fix fitting rooms (locks, doors, mirrors, clean up walls). If corporate will decide to invest some money in to this places I'm sure it will bring a lot of customers back, as the building with Tiffany ceiling is so so beautiful and attracts people and tourist from all over the world.

Yelp
I love Macy's! Always a treat going there-Love the gourmet candy selections near the housewares section on the Lower Level (LL)! There is also a wine shop that is part of the store next to the candy selection. The candy selections include individual and boxed chocolates, gummies, and unique selections such as Godiva where you can buy individual selected chocolates, boxed chocolates, gift sets, chocolate advent calendars, Godiva gourmet boxed assortment of classy French Cookies. The workers are friendly and care about actually having a conversation with each customer therefore, personalizing the shopping experience. FYI-PHENOMENAL ORNAMENT SELECTIONS of CHICAGO THEMED ORNAMENTS on the Street Level and they are 75% off!

Yelp
I LOVE this Macy's location! Macy's State Street offers the elegance of days gone by through their gorgeous architecture. If you look as you walk around, you'll see marble drinking fountains, beautiful banisters, crown molding and the vintage clocks. I can just imagine the fancy ladies shopping and lunching back in the day. The sheer size is impressive. Floor after floor allows for a huge amount of inventory that is diverse. Whatever you are looking for, you'll find it here. I shopped for business clothes and found something in every color imaginable. All the sparkly clothes are out now to the holiday season. The Christmas section is stunning. I picked up some great cosmetics at the MAC counter and even bought a gift for a family member. Each staff member I encountered was amazing. They were super helpful, funny and kind spirited. I really appreciated that. Whenever I need or want to go to Macy's, I very much prefer this State Street location. Wander around. Take in all the beauty that is there. And purchase all the gorgeous things you'll find on the 7 or 8 floors.

Yelp
Generally clean shopping space. Lots of selection. A ton of stuff all in one place. I am taking off stars for two big things. Normally priced merchandise seemed non existent in this store (probably normal for downtown Chicago) and the bathrooms were completely trashed and disgusting. The stall doors were broken, there was fruit all over the bathroom floor and there was not a single stall that was clean or functional. For a store that appears so nice visually this ruined my experience. I will not be returning. I went with a friend to get glasses and all of the options were luxury brands. They ended up getting glasses that they liked and the overall process from having an eye appointment in the store and buying glasses right in the store was really simple and easy. This is the only reason I am giving this store two stars.

Yelp
Always a pleasurable experience. The online game has dramatically become better. Shipping speeds can definitely improve. Great department store, lots of options to buy from and discounts as well. I had trouble finding the right size for a jacket we wanted, appreciate the assistance I was given to find it. Returns are easy. I'm really love this departments ..The store itself is beautiful and well kept. Walking around and being able to touch items, try on clothes and know what your getting. I always find what I'm looking for and more. Just to stop in and borrows is my way of a treasure hunt..never know what you maybe lucky to find. Customer service was outstanding. I was immediately helped by the nicest gentleman in the fragrance department who knew his stuff! Based on what I told him I liked he found me an amazing YSL scent and they were also nice enough to wrap up the other fragrance set I bought as a holiday gift. Yes Got me some YSL from here and it smell great love my products an sometimes they have good sales, I don't really use the credit card tho, Don't like credit Bill's. I unambiguously love this store! Can't believe the prices on some things. They're so low & I can get so much. Also, all the people who work here are so nice & helpful. I've never had a bad experience here & I've been a customer for years.

Yelp
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, always has been. This has not been a normal year by any means. However, when opportunities arise that allow us to experience joy, we need to embrace them. Macy's has been a part of many family's tradition to start holiday shopping. Each year they create colorful, heartwarming Christmas windows that awaken the inner child in all of us. This year's windows thank all of Chicago for being strong and resilient during the Pandemic.
