Food-Shaming Portion-Control Plates Removed by Macy’s Represent Bigger Issues | Eater

"After a visitor discovered a line of Pourtions plates with snarky portion labels and tweeted about them, the retailer acknowledged it had “missed the mark” and removed the product from a narrative-driven retail concept for smaller brands in its stores, though the items remain available elsewhere. The episode spotlighted how the store, by stocking portion-control dinnerware framed as novelty or weight-loss tools, contributed to a wider trend that pressures especially women to be thinner and can normalize hyper-vigilant eating behaviors. While the removal was the right step, the decision to carry the plates in the first place reveals the ambient cultural scrutiny of women’s bodies and the harm in turning portion control into a joke." - Jaya Saxena

Macy’s at Westland Mall in Hialeah offers a great selection of clothing, accessories, and home goods. The store is well-organized, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The variety of brands and frequent sales make shopping here enjoyable. While some areas could use a little updating, the overall experience is positive. The customer service team is attentive and goes out of their way to assist with returns or finding items. Parking is convenient, and the store is easy to navigate. A reliable spot for shopping with quality products at reasonable prices.

I admit that I discovered a service that I didn't even know existed at Macy's, personal stylist. In the store I went to, the person responsible for the sector was Mrs. Rebecca. She was excellent, I highly recommend her. And by the way, she helps you put together looks and there's no fee for that.

Google
They have huge selections on all departments but it is too expensive. I found the same article for my Mother $100.00 cheaper somewhere else: I guess they want me to pay for the name. One thing: do not go there if you are in a hurry or do not want to be bothered; the Perfume departments' sales people will stop you one after another even if they saw you saying you are not interested in buying any perfum/cologne. I was there about 2 weeks ago and it took me over half hour to get out of the store. I understand they are trying to sale and meet their sales goal but, it's really annoying. That's what I give 3 Stars.

Google
Beautiful store with exceptional inventory. I couldn't believe the number of sales persons at each cosmetic counter. Compared to our Mays Landing, NJ store, this location was the creme de la creme.

Gold is high, but I just purchased a necklace for my daughter with 65% off.....I think it was perfect! The pick up date is after August 14th, so I'll post pictures then! Thanks Macy's!

Came in just to smell some new scents while drinking my Starbucks , and went to the Jo Malone section where I’ve frequented before. Ended up being assisted by Rafael and sat down at his little “bar” area where the perfumes were on display. He had us smelling all the newer releases and showing us which ones would pair great with the ones we already owned. Ended up leaving with a new perfume to the collection and a great experience.

Google
Excellent, today I was in the store looking for a gift for my daughter's boyfriend and I had the help of Mr. Pedro, very professional and very kind. Thank you very much.

Yelp
Since for better or worse clothes do wear out or you need new ones for different occasion, or even new perfume, you need to find a new store when your usual one closes. Since my old favorite closed earlier this year, I've been coming to the Macy's in Westland Mall. (I even would come here a couple of other times when I needed shoes or cologne .) Yes, "El Weslan Mol", the same mall where I spent a lot of my youth! This most recent trip was to get a new polo shirt for brunch as well as a new pair of shorts and update my cologne. I bought a preppy classic Tommy Hilfiger polo & shorts, as well as an Azzaro cologne gift set that came with a couple of samples, which are perfect to have in my car if I need to get nice during the middle of the day. Due to rewards points from my credit card, I was able to get a good deal on the shirt and shorts. The Macy's is located at the end of the mall closest to the Palmetto Expressway and I've never had a problem finding parking. At least in the perfume department, I was able to get some help from an employee including letting me try different samples. Walking around, I also noticed a good amount of employees like by the shoe department, but the menswear department could have had a few more sales people. That's why I'm knocking it to four stars. Otherwise, this was a great shopping situation, and just like I went in the early 90's I'll be at Westland next time I need to buy clothes.

Yelp
Old, dirty and full of racist females. I'm a 6.3, 52yo (& maintained) white guy. I work in the area. All the Latino female staff I encounter are racist unless you're Cuban. Simply making a purchase is difficult. No one speaks English and/or pretends not to. Impossible to get any help with sizes or shoes. I travel considerably and have been to countless Macy's around the country. This one is the worst!

Yelp
This Macy's is one of the main anchor stores in Westland Mall ever since it took over Burdines. It had gotten better and better as a store every year... I haven't come by in over two years since I moved out of the area and was greatly impressed with what I saw. This Macy's has always been a good one as the employees are always helpful and the clothes are of good quality from many different brand names...not to mention their jewelry and cologne/perfume areas...but now this Macy's has a Finishline shoe store within the store itself. It also has a Starbucks and a LensCrafters. Very impressive....being able to tell your customers that you can get a lot or all of your shopping done in one store. Definitely come by if your shopping in Westland Mall in Hialeah.

Yelp
A decent Macy's store located in Hialeah Westland Mall. There is a huge car park outside.

Yelp
Very rude at register a lady called Cindy attended us and kept talking bad about us and rolling her eyes also telling us that we are annoying and another worker at the register with black hair and brown eyes kept laughing even though we did not do anything and she was on her phone the whole time the worker Cindy was very mad to do her job when we asked to get the shoes we tried on the service here was extremely rude and horrible the 2 workers kept looking at each other when we asked her something like if we are done never coming again!!

Yelp
I come here because it's near my job and easy access but the shade and lack of customer service to those not apart of the Hispanic community is horrible. Tell me how can I be the only 6'1fy black man in the shoe department and you not see me and ask if I need help. The tall Latin male wall right in front of me, stop made a call on his phone, hung up and stood behind the register with out any acknowledgement of me. The sad thing is this isn't the 1st time. So screw you in your sale and I will take my money elsewhere. MACYS DO BETTER!

Yelp
Sigh what a mess. This Macy's has so much potential but wow. It looks like a tornado swished through here and it's often crowded. Some of the clothes are on the wrong hangers so be sure to look at the tags. I hate to bad mouth patrons but there are so many messy people just leaving things on the floor and over the rack. The staff doesn't help too much either. When you have a question they just look at you like why are you asking me asking question? Other staff just look overwhelmed and it makes me sad for them. Recently I came to return an item and I was standing there for a long time because the lady looked like she wanted to organize around her and then help us. I didn't really feel like a valued customer but more like invisible. Shopping here is more stressful than anything and the mess just doesn't make it feel like the caliber that Macy's should be. Even still, they do offer some nice sales after Christmas sales.

Yelp
I can assure you Goodwill stores have better fitting rooms than the Macys at 49th St. When did this place become a dumpster?? Looks like everybody gave up and they are not even trying anymore to make it work.

Yelp
One of the anchor stores of Westland Mall, I have never had an issue with this Macy's. I love the fact that this Macy's isn't just a Macy's but that it also has other stores inside. Referring specifically to LensCrafters and to the new Starbucks. That aside, if I go to Macy's, it's usually to go to one of those two stores or simply to buy purses. I just love the deals they have. I do wish, however, that more people spoke English, but it is Hialeah, so expecting that is like expecting a miracle. Other than that, this Macy's is the standard two floors. I believe, too, that they have a MAC section. Not much else to say really.

Yelp
Westland Mall is that classic mall that never evolves or gets torn down to build something better in its place; like another Walgreens. Sadly, this is the only mall in the city so you have to suck it up and hope for the best. This Macy's store has been here for over 14 years and yet staff make it difficult to return items and assist in purchases. Hard to also find good deals in the store due to the store being so disorganized.

Yelp
If you are from out of town and used to other Macy's I'd say avoid this one if possible. I don't think they follow corporate standards set by Macy's. What do I mean by that? You can find live singers and loud Hispanic music blaring here on a weekend. Not the most high-end or relaxing experience. However, this is Hialeah and well this is everywhere. The parking situation is a little crazy, but there are 3 exterior ways to enter this Macy's which alleviates the pressure of parking in one particular area. It's also convenient for those of you looking to get it and get out. I come here for make up, purses, and shoe sales. Aside from these areas, this Macy's is subpar compared to the Macy's at nearby malls. I wish they would stock this Macy's with the formal dresses and high end women's clothing you see at other locations. 3 stars for location.

Yelp
Despite the Holiday rush, before and after the 25th, I found plenty of staff anxious to help in the perfume section. I would bet they are on commission but at least I was well serviced. I left with several bottles and smelling like a flower bomb. I was taken care of by Melissa on one of the days and she was pleasant and patient as I took some time to make my selections. I was disappointed that they were out of stock on Escada. Luckily I have an extra bottle of my favorite fragrance but I wanted to check out any new scents they may have had. It's also a shame most clerks only spoke Spanish. A little frustrating for my shopping partner who speaks several languages but not Spanish.

Yelp
Cleo from the women's shoe department is amazing! She went through hell and high waters to find my shoe size for some vans I was looking for. They were on sale and on the rack with all the mixed shoes so they were hard to find and she did it. She made sure I was taken care of the whole time. I have been coming to this Macy's for years and customer service has always been subpar but Cleo has changed my mind. Going above and beyond for a paying customer is what keeps us coming back. I will definitely be coming back and I will ask for her specifically.

Yelp
Very slow service one associates at each cashier with long lines. I ordered online for store pick up these long lines defeat the purpose of picking up in-store I should have shipped it. In addition I clearly told the associate that I don't speak Spanish and I'm talking to her in English and she goes and reply to me in Spanish!! Poor management at this location. There are more than 10 associates on the floors offering perfume samples! But they don't have enough employees at The cash registries.

Yelp
My favorite by far and now they have added the Macy's backstage on the second floor and it is full of great deals! The ladies working their are super helpful. We were assisted by Nicole and she was super sweet and really knew her stuff. Macy's you just got better.

Yelp
My review is based off today's experience with one sales associate... I am very frustrated, annoyed, and dissatisfied. I came into Macy's today to purchase bikinis for the beach this weekend. As usual, I tried on quite a few to find the perfect ones. My first try was not a success - I neatly put them back on hanger and left them in front as instructed. As I go back in search for more, an older lady working in the juniors department rudely told me that I have tried on enough clothes, that I should have found a bikini, and that I am not allowed to try on any more due to the time- 9:20pm. I asked why if the store clothes in 40 minutes? She said I was not allowed, to go ask permission at another department, I did, and their fitting room was closed and instructed me to go back to the fitting room I was originally at. As I walk into the original fitting room, I noticed the door was closed but not locked so I walked in with another customer. The lady raised her voice and told me I need to leave, and I asked, "So where do I try on clothes? In the middle of the store infront of customers?" So I proceeded to trying on a bathing suit because there's still 30 minutes left to closing. She even told the lady behind me NO and she only had one piece. This is ridiculous, how are you going to tell a customer that they have tried on too much clothes, that you should have found something, and that you must leave when the store closes in 30-40 minutes. That's just plain lazy, unprofessional, and truly ruins Macy's image. I'm sure if this happened to me and another customer, this must happen all the time. How many potential sales has she ruined? How much money has macys lost in the process? A simple solution is to allow customers to shop and try on clothes until closing time. Customer service should always be on point. My recommendation is to inform and remind this sales associate all of the above. I'm sure she gets paid not only by hour but sales. By allowing customers to shop until closing time, it will not only increase her sales and her pocket, but also Macy's profits over all as well as their image.

Yelp
Please fix 2nd floor air conditioner, I hate going there now, 3rd time this month with the same issue, I used to enjoy going there with my baby but now it feels like a sauna .My baby cheeks get red after a couple of minutes in there. I dont think is fair either for the employees.......

Yelp
I cant speak for anyone else but I remember the good old days when this used to be a Burdine's... you could walk in any day and there would be something beautiful that you just HAD to have! I remembered being excited about it turning into a Macy's but now that its been that way for a few years I can say that I went from spending hundreds there a week to not even wanting to park there. The selections dont change too much and the styles went from classy to skanky overnight.. I am not going to judge ALL Macy's stores by this one alone.... I have been to the one in NYC and its completely different. But, I think that they should have created a smoother transition when changing the stores out.

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
Beware of Xochi from Dior. If you make a purchase, you will not be able to return it. She denied me of my return even tho I had the receipt. When I got the floor manager, he was able to do my return without a problem or a fight. I went up and down looking for someone to help while these ladies just watched me. Xochi laughed at me when I asked why she is not abiding by the Macy's return policy. That was inappropriate of her and she told me to go to another mall to do my return??? I should be able to do my return at any Macy's. She clearly is not fit for her position, I took it to cooperate and I hope they handle it in a proper manner.

Yissell M.

Yelp
They do not have enough employees! It takes you 45 minutes for the return of one online order. They had one employee in customer service for online pick up orders, returns, exchanges, and payments. It's serve yourself until you have to pay.
google avatar

Ivonne F.

Yelp
Waiting at the estee lauder counter for 45min. The lady doesn't even acknowledge that i am waiting. Worst customer service ever. I see why they have 100 stores closing.

Yelp
I went shopping at this Macy's yesterday, they were having a very good sale. My experience upstairs buying a dress was good. All the sales ladies were helpful, nice and polite. Then i went to the shoe department. That area was a mess. Customers were arguing about sneakers, but the worse was that even an employee/cashier was involved with the arguing. That whole thing looked like a circus. Even after one of the customers left, the cashier kept talking in a loud voice about the incident with the other customer. She was so loud everyone around was looking at her. She seemed highly uneducated, rude, loud, and had no customer service etiquette. Where in the world did they find this person??? I always enjoyed shopping at Macy's because of the customer service driven employees. Macy's administration needs to review their hiring process!!!Needless to say I left and did not care to buy shoes there!!! The service there deserves a 1, but the ladies in the second floor deserve better, that's why i gave a 3.
google avatar

Ariadna P.

Yelp
This Macys can definitely use some remodeling. Compared to other stores and given their somewhat high prices this store should be a bit more clean. The dressings rooms are usually a mess! The customer services is not the best. Clearance racks are out of control! Other than that...if you are willing to pay for the high price of anything you see right on the wall you will be ok.

My T.

Yelp
I've worked for Macy's for over one year while living in New York City. However, I last approximately 6months working at this macys. Management is poor! I was discriminated against because I do NOT speak Spanish. (Mainly by consumers) Majority of the new hires do not speak English; Because English is not required at this particular macys. Limited brands to chose from-top seller is Michael Kors.
google avatar

Tiffany B.

Yelp
The store is very big and its also clean. The girls in the MAC section were nice and also helpful. The clothing assistants in the women's section were ok - nothing to shout about really. Clothing is well organized and you will find a bargain in between - but it really depends on what time of the year you go.
google avatar

Frank E.

Yelp
Great sales in home goods! Picked up some pillows dirt cheap! Yay!

Consuelo D.

Yelp
I like the fact that this store makes it possible for everyone to be able to shop. You can find merchandise with deverse prices. If you like expensive merchandise, you'll find it but if you can not afford to spend too much money, you can also find merchandise that you can purchase. I lreally like Macy's

Jessica C.

Yelp
Awful! What a mess and most of the employees are so rude. Just about everything is over priced. I only come here because it's the closest location to me that has Mac. I walk in to buy my Mac products and I walk back out. The employees at Mac are super nice and helpful, it's too bad the rest of the store isn't. Worse Macy's ever, only come here if you really need to.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the WORST Macy's I have been to, the customer service was awful and I bet that I'm not the only person they have driven away! I have been a shopper for years, spending thousands of dollars a year at either The Falls location or Aventura, where they DO know how to treat a valued customer. I was well-dressed, as usual, and even then, was treated worse than a dog. The saleswoman was busy chatting up her friend and when I said "excuse me", she sighed and turned around, as if I had just broken up the most important conversation in the world and should die for doing so. I inquired about some INC skinny jeans I had seen on macys.com and her only response was "no, we don't have them". She never bothered to look for them or move away from her friend, nor did she offer to help me find a similar substitute pair of jeans. She just went back to her conversation and back to ignoring me. I would have reported her to the store manager, but I was unwilling to waste another 30 minutes of my life in that store as I had had enough. I muttered "unhelpful b!tch" to her, under my breath, and made the 30 minute drive to Aventura, where I was treated like a valued customer even though I had never met the saleswoman on duty that day.

Undisclosed U.

Yelp
Im an employee there and to be honest its not just the workers who are rude...sometimes the customers can get really nasty as well....i cant understand when people sit there and complain how awful we are when customers come into our store and turn it into SHIT....we can just be folding clothes neatly and right in front of our face...what do u kno ...somebody srambles the clothes like eggs! ... imagine going through this every day?? ...Honestly the location of the Macys has lots to do with it....Hialeah is full of spanish disrespectful people as well as spanish workers with no class. And im spanish myself. Its highly disappointing. If we can all treat each other with respect....the customers would be happy and the workers would be happy to assist them.

Sandi K.

Yelp
I tried to place an order online and had so much trouble that I gave up. The site was not working right and I had to keep signing out and back in. When I signed back in the prices were different and some of the items were not available. The last time I went to my shopping cart all of the items I had spent hours selecting were gone! I called customer service and spoke with someone named Paula who would not connect me to a supervisor. She insisted that she could take care of the problem and the only thing she would do is place my order at the higher prices than what they had published just minutes earlier. She insisted that they never had the lower prices I saw. I ended up not ordering and am so upset that I spent hours of my time and that Macy's would not honor the prices that they had listed. I cannot believe such a big company has such poor customer service and basically uses bait and switch tactics. I noticed just before writing this review that the prices on the items I wanted are back to what they were when I tried to order last night. They fluctuate minute to minute so if you ever order something make sure you keep checking the price and ask for a credit when it goes lower. Shame on Macy's for having such dishonest methods of doing business.

Lourdes D.

Yelp
This is really from Online Macy's. They are committing fraud. I tried using a gift card to make a purchase and I was told I needed to purchase a Macy's E card. SO I made my purchase waited to get the email but I never did. I pulled up the order and it showed cancelled. So I used my personnel credit card to make the purchase. This was last week, I went to use my card yesterday and was told it had no money. I call today 1-800-289-6229 and got a round around. I was transferred to consumer protection and was told I had to wait 7 to 10 buss. days to get my money back. I requested to speak to a supervisor after 40 minutes she came on ask for her name and she got very upset when i told her to spell it clearly and then had a very bad attitude she said it was Andrea A. then she hung up on me. Now I called back again the first person did not want to give me her name then she said JLO and i ask for her supervisor and then she gave me a badge number after putting me on hold #894485. I requested the number for consumer protection an she said she could not give it to me them put me on hold and came back with the number once again when I requested to speak to her supervisor. Finally spoke to somebody that i could actually understand when they spoke because every other person had such a heavy accent I had to ask everything several times. At the end I was told I have to wait 7-0 buss days to get my money back.
