The 14 Best Bars In Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"There’s something about drinking in the presence of vinyl that makes us feel 70% cooler, even if we only recently found out that a ‘hi-fi bar’ isn’t a type of sports shoe. Such is the case with Mad Cats, a shochu spritz den and Japanese-leaning small plates spot on Redchurch Street. The food is mostly serviceable but you’re here to brood—the lighting is power-cut-levels dark—and swap secrets over sake." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

Mad Cats - Review - Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"Mad Cats is a Shoreditch hi-fi bar that’s full of boxy white t-shirt-wearers snacking on Japanese-leaning small plates and chatting underneath handsome, mahogany subwoofers. Something about being this close to so much vinyl will make you feel 70% cooler, even if your own record collection doesn’t extend beyond the ‘evermore’ album. The lighting, which is power cut-levels of dark, sets the scene for intimate catch-ups at the bar—our favourite place to sit so you can watch sochu spritzes being made and DJs leafing through record sleeves. The food mostly falls under the category of serviceable, with some standouts like the tender beef short rib and refreshing cauliflower salad. But it’s plenty good enough to pick at while listening to some music, or your friend’s blow by blow recap of their week. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Chicken Skewers The sweet, sticky kecap manis glaze on these is nice. The chicken is nice. It’s all just… fine. But there are better things going on elsewhere on the menu and we forgot about these once we were a few small plates down. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Cauliflower Salad You know you’ve reached adulthood when you say things like, “the textures in this dish are great”. But they really are. The kohlrabi is fresh and crunchy, the avocado creamy, and we like the scattering of chopped almonds and seeds as well. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Beef Short Rib A hunk of gelatinous beef, so dark with rich, earthy mole that it’s almost black, comes on top of a circle of sweet, nutty cauliflower purée. It looks impressive and it tastes even better. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Chocolate Mousse There is a lot of olive oil and a lot of flaky salt on this chocolate mousse. It has been taken right to the edge of the acceptable amount of those things. It manages to stay on the right side, just, thanks to the hefty portion of smooth, indulgent mousse. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna

There’s everything to love about this place! Amazing cocktails, delicious food, pristine service & customer experience, beautiful setup and great great musical selection. John made our night even better by delivering impeccable recommendations and being super friendly. Stumbled upon it on an Instagram reel, then had the fortune to visit. Will definitely come back!!

I’m Giving it 4 only because I found the seating very uncomfortable - but I’m a chronic pain sufferer and high seating or backless seating is impossible. Also they allowed one of the sourdough toasts to get a little too burned. The food however was much better than I could have expected: particularly crab brioche, pumpkin gyoza and shish dumplings - all blew my mind. The cheaper red wine was from Ribera which is my favourite region but often unappreciated -and it was better than you would get at that price in most places. The vibe was great and the staff were super friendly and attentive. Barely a wait for the food. Will be back (and book low-lying seats).

Despite my old age I was welcomed and treated well. Service was very nice and friendly especially when you are used to Berlin pretentious arrogance. And The food was very nice and the drink spicy. High quality sound system at a nice volume, only the soft jazz played by the DJ was much younger than me ;-). It was a very nice experience.

Mad Cats was definitely one of my favourite meals of 2025 so far! It was a spectacular experience, and I will definitely be back to try some of the desserts or catch a DJ set. Food wise, everything was a hit! We got the cauliflower salad, crab brioche, and the yellowtail carpaccio and everything was stellar. We also tried the midnight pounce and Freya's whiskers cocktails, with the midnight pounce being a definite standout. It was complex and masterfully blended unique flavours all while pairing perfectly with the food. The one slight let-down was that the night we went, multiple items on an already brief menu were out of stock; however, our waitress Daniella did a fantastic job giving alternate suggestions and recommendations. The atmosphere is also seriously cool with inspired art on the walls and fun decor. The restaurant is small but you're still able to hold a conversation over the noise. I'm definitely curious about going later when there's a live DJ, but we had a fantastic time either way!

I’ve been to Mad Cats several times now. Each time is incredible. The service is excellent, the selection of food, drinks, snacks means you often have something to nibble on and the sound system and music is truly remarkable. I only come here on special occasions and it’s worth it every time. Last night we were served by a chap called John. He made some excellent cocktail recommendations, took pictures of us and made the experience so much better for everyone. Despite being sat next to a large group of really really loud people, we had a great time and will come back again often.

Mad Cats has such a great vibe...A cool, relaxed atmosphere with lovely, friendly staff and the best cocktails. The jazz music adds the perfect ambience, loud enough to enjoy, but still at a level where you can comfortably chat. We only had a few nibbles and a delicious Crème Brûlée for dessert this time, but we’ll definitely be back to try more of the food! The manager went above and beyond by helping me create a special tray of cupcakes for my friend’s birthday, which made the whole evening even more special. Overall, the experience was wonderful, and I can’t recommend Mad Cats enough!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I randomly discovered Mad Cats one night while walking around Shoreditch, and it instantly became one of my favorite spots in London. The vibe is just perfect, the kind of place where you can actually have great food, listen to live music that isn’t too loud, and enjoy cocktails that are genuinely well made. Last time I went, the bartender remembered my drink from a week before (small detail, but it says a lot about the service). The staff are super friendly, and even the people hanging around the bar are easy-going — you end up chatting with strangers like old friends. Honestly, it’s rare to find a place in London that nails the mix of food, music, drinks, and atmosphere this well. Mad Cats just gets it right.
