The 20 Best Restaurants On Martha’s Vineyard 2024

"With three locations around the island (Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven), it’s basically impossible not to grab a cone from this ice cream shop during a trip to Martha’s Vineyard. They lean heavily on local purveyors for flavor inspiration, so try a scoop of Apple Fritter (made with apple fritters from Back Door Donuts), Chilmark Coffee (made with coffee from Chilmark Coffee Company), or MV Sea Salt Caramel (made with salt from Martha’s Vineyard Sea Salt)." - tanya edwards

The ice cream itself was okay, though it could’ve had a bit more flavor. But the watermelon sherbet — wow! It was absolutely amazing, tasting just like Sour Patch Watermelon candies but icy, refreshing, and totally thirst-quenching.

If you’re black then expect racist and biased service at this place. I had a prejudiced and frankly appalling customer service experience that I had at Oak Bluffs Mad Martha’s yesterday. The server who was working around 4pm on 8/9 was appallingly rude to both me and all of the other workers after I asked for a sample of the Cat Crunch flavor that is not common to ensure I liked it before buying. Every other customer being served (4 customers being served by 2 different servers on either side of me) were given a sample right in front of my face which is quite a normal gesture for an ice cream shop employee to do for a customer. These customers were treated with kindness and respect. The store was not busy with customers. Unfortunately when I then asked for a sample like the 4 other customers being served right next to me, this staff member proceeded to yell at me for asking for a sample and that I can’t have one, and when I pointed out that everyone else is holding a sample right in front of my face, she screamed at me and the other servers. The customer service from this employee was truly appalling and I will be leaving a 1 star review for your establishment unless the issue is somehow rectified. You tout inclusivity with a pride flag in your front door but yet you treat people of color with the utmost disrespect and differential treatment like we are still living in the Jim Crow era.

Around 6PM I went in here for an ice cream and got one. Except the first lick had the ice cream in my hand, completely off the cone. I hadn't even left the counter yet. Then it was melted by the time I got back to the ferry (less than 5 minutes, and not even that hot out). By far the most depressing ice-cream-eating experience I've ever had. A fitting end for a disappointing day at Martha's Vineyard.

Google
They had a very delicious and diverse selection of dairy-free options for ice cream! We tried all of them and thoroughly enjoyed each one. The flavor of the week, which featured raspberry, was my favorite.

Angel J

Google
The one scoop for $8 was not worth it. It was average and they didn’t even have the flavor-of-the-week (it was thursday when I visited). we each had a different flavor, vanilla w/M&M, coconut, strawberry, and salted caramel. The strawberry had the most flavor, while the vanillam&m was creamy and fresh. coconut lacked flavor and salted caramel also bland. freshness won us over as the ice cream was fresh and creamy just lacked a good flavor burst. the sugar cones were good and crunchy.

Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The service was good and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Go!!!

Google
Beyond terrible! I emailed brook with Nathan cc Seventeen actual times. I can get this ice cream pie in Edgartown where we are staying? No, Brook answered, only at Oak Bluff-ok I say. I would like to pick up on Tuesday-No, brook answered. He needs me to pick up on Wednesday bc it’s their busy time. Ok, I say. Can we get some decorations on this birthday cake? No, says Brook, you need to decorate yourself. Ok, I say. I emailed them today to say I would be in as promised. No response, so sure it’s ok -so, we load in an 80 yo, 3 kids under 10, 3 adults and head out to collect cake. NO cake. That’s right, no cake. When I asked to speak to one of then, Nathan doesn’t apologize, but man-Splains to me that there has been “ a miscommunication “. That’s all, end of story. Well, first he said Brook forgot to get with the cake maker. Then he said there was a duplicate order and they just sold my cake to someone else. Both clearly fabrications. Offered nothing, just repeated there was a miscommunication- So, not an islander, but will never do business at Mad Martha’s again. And yep, sharing my story with my island people. Entire family both inconvenienced in a big way and also disappointed!! Oh-we pivoted and picked up similar cake on the way home from Dairy Queen!!! It was perfect!! And, I told them, too!

Mad Martha's Ice Cream on Martha's Vineyard is a nostalgic treasure trove of delightful frozen treats. With a wide array of flavors that range from classic to inventive, there's something to satisfy every palate. Their commitment to using local products in their ice creams truly sets them apart, adding an authentic touch to each scoop. Personally, my heart belongs to the Chilmark Coffee flavor - a robust and creamy indulgence that perfectly captures the essence of Martha's Vineyard. What makes Mad Martha's even more special is their strong community focus. With locations in three different towns on the island, they've become an integral part of the Vineyard vacation experience. The bustling atmosphere and cheerful staff exude a welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. It's evident that this is more than just an ice cream shop; it's a community-driven business that cherishes its patrons and takes pride in being a beloved gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Mad Martha's Ice Cream is a quintessential Martha's Vineyard experience that's not to be missed!!!!

Yelp
My wife had heard about this one and had to make a stop. Plenty of locations around the island. I got a frappe with salted caramel and skor bars. They serve it with big ass straws that don't plug.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
This is my favorite island ice cream joint. I think the flavors and creaminess of the ice cream are what you would expect and they really pack the ice cream onto your cone. Staff are friendly and patient about letting you try different flavors to help make up your mind. I usually just dive in and make a selection without testing however. There are a few seats inside but if its crowded there is seating along Circuit Ave where you can people watch while you lick.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to cool off on a hot summer day! Very nice and clean inside and the staff were very knowledgeable of all the flavors. You can try samples before choosing your flavor and Mud Pie was absolutely delicious!! Great ice cream and great service!
google avatar

Yelp
Had to try..bc this seems to me an MV staple. With their collab with back door donuts went with the Apple fritter flavor ice cream...which was different. Def have never had a donut flavored ice cream. Appreciate the creativity prob would try something else next time. Great service and staff.

Yelp
Tried Mad Martha's after seeing multiple raving reviews online about "musts" while on the Vineyard, and I would consider this a must not. The ice cream didn't taste fresh at all, it was hard and had freezer burn. The vanilla base tasted fruity and there were a total of 5 cookie dough pieces in my double scoop cup. Not worth it for the price or calories! I would go elsewhere for ice cream if you're on the Vineyard.
google avatar

Jill P.

Yelp
The ice cream was SO GOOD!! Don't think anything needs to change to make it any better. server was polite and quick. Loved the spaciousness inside and eating area not being crowded.
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
Love the ice cream here...Had the pistachio ice cream and it was Devine...nice big pieces of pistachio mixed into the ice cream. It's a must visit if you're an ice cream lover.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Got Oreo flavored and it was so soft they recommended I get a cup not a cone because of how soft it was that it wouldn't the able to stay on the cone. It slightly had the flavor of Oreo but it was like a soft served with little pieces of ice in it. Not a single Oreo piece. I was so disappointed. The service was fast and nice though so I appreciate that.
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
Best Oreo ice cream ever. Oreo ice cream should be brown. It should not be vanilla with chunks of Oreo but rather blended Oreos into the ice cream, thereby making it look closer to chocolate than vanilla. As a cookies and cream connoisseur I know this, trust me . Best I've had. Hands down.

Alex L.

Yelp
The greatness can be explained in a few words. Best Oreo Milkshake On Earth

Yelp
First time to Martha's Vineyard and it was hot, hot, hot! What to do on a hot summer day on the island? Get some cold ice cream. Mad Martha's was recommended by a friend of ours and we're glad we stopped in for a treat. The Maple Walnut was divine. I had order regret when I tasted it because I ordered the Pistachio when Butter Pecan was not on the menu board. Not one to trade, my hubby devoured the Maple Walnut. The servers were all very professional and friendly. For a special bonus, check out the Legend of Mad Martha posted on the wall. Interesting!

Stacy C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and lots of options. We wanted the best ice cream on the island and we got it. We sat inside at a table to eat them. The single scoop is huge. You don't need more than one scoop. It is expensive but you get a lot for your money. I would return because it tasted so good and they had seating inside.

Sanmita S.

Yelp
Terrible. Just terrible. My daughter is not a fan of ice cream, but I can't leave her at home by herself while I get ice cream. The guy there literally pushed ice cream in her mouth. Terrible service. I didn't even get ice cream. Will never go back. I warn people, do NOT go there. It is hectic.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
This stop was okay, but not the best we had in the area. A lot of the places were closed until June-ish so we stopped here and had two middle of the road ice creams. It wasn't bad at all, but also just okay. Maybe try a different spot if they're open!

Yelp
Mad Martha's Homemade Ice Cream gets 5 stars A star for taste. Homemade and delicious. Very few can top the taste of their products. A star for ambience. The vibrant colors and store setup make this ice cream shop fun and happy to spend 7 bucks for a cone of ice cream A star for COVID-19 guidance- social distancing, masking requirements for staff & customers. Hand sanitizer available to use. A star for location & open hours - staff is extremely low on Martha's Vineyard; M/Martha's has maintained it's hours at a great location on Circuit Ave. Last Star - the family was happy with their respective choices of ice cream.

Emily J.

Yelp
Really good icecream and fast service. Big chunks of Oreo in the mudslide flavor I would definitely get it again.

Emily R.

Yelp
I look forward to coming here when I visit once a year. I love it here. I am obsessed with their minty Oreo. The service is always great & their flavor selection is great.
google avatar

Yelp
Nothing like having cold ice cream on a late summer night. It was delicious... Make sure you have some before leaving the island.
google avatar

Yelp
I said this in another review. I came here because I heard Obama liked it here and I always thought he had great food taste. Using that logic once got me a great food experience at Ben's Chili Bowl. It also got me an ok but not spectacular experience at Nancy's. Here, though, Barry came through for me. Simply excellent ice cream. You actually get better value if you buy double and triple scoops for your money. I don't care if you're a card-carrying GOP loyalist. You'll love it here too.

Yelp
I love Mad Martha's ice cream, and have been enjoying it since I was a little kid, but folks with disabilities should be warned that this store location is NOT WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE! There is a very steep front step which makes this space difficult to enter even for more able-bodied people. It's an old building, I get it. This location has been around at least as long as I've been alive (which is a long time...let's just leave it at that!!). Once inside, it's actually really spacious, but with relatively few tables and chairs. So, don't bring a large group if you're planning to sit inside with your ice cream, since there probably won't be enough chairs! It's also usually excessively cold inside this particular store, which is nice if it's super-hot outside, but if it's a cooler evening, I have found it to be overwhelming! This is the same Mad Martha's ice cream that has been around on the island since FOREVER!! There are a ton of ice cream choices within quick walking distance of this location, but I truly believe that this ice cream is the best! It hasn't changed since my childhood, so I might be a little bit biased. If you're looking for a wheelchair-accessible location for Mad Martha's, go to the one on Main Street in Vineyard Haven or in Edgartown. And if you're able-bodied and looking for some good ice cream in Oak Bluffs, might I recommend my two favorites, their Mocha Chip or Sinful Chocolate?!

Yelp
I stopped by here this past Sunday afternoon with my wife for a snack. I had actually wanted to stop by the night prior but the fact that they had closed at 6 left me ice creamless for that day. What drew me to Mad Martha's Ice Cream shop instead of the 3 other choices on Main Street in Oak Bluffs is that their flavor of the week was birthday cake which happens to be my favorite flavor. You have to go up a few steps to get inside but once you do it's pretty open with some tables to sit at on both sides, display freezers full of ice cream and a menu on the wall behind them. I ended up going with a single scoop of birthday cake ice cream which ran me $5.50. It was a generous "scoop" but still seemed a little pricey. Still I took it back to the table and dug in. It was pretty good as the vanilla ice cream was creamy and had a good flavor and there was a good number of rainbow sprinkles throughout. What I was missing though was the icing in it which is what really makes this my favorite flavor. I mean I got a few bites of it here and there and really I just wanted more of it. The bottom line for me is that I might stop back here again in the future. While I can't say this was my favorite version of birthday cake ice cream, it was still good. With that being said though I would also give some of the other homemade ice cream places nearby a chance too.

Yelp
Within an hour of my fiancé and I arriving and after buying some Ketel One, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and Corona, I was on the "ice cream hunt". Seriously there must be 6 or 7 within walking distance! I sampled 5 of them. Yes I did. My favorite, hands down (weird saying) is Mad Martha's!! I was torn between two flavors. Mud Pie won. I will definitely return for a follow up scoop. Cash only. Smart move on their part. Why pay credit card fees? Really delicious ice cream and a very cute store too! Friendly staff. End of season- late September. Ice cream all year I say!

Yelp
Can't travel for the weekend without sampling the local wares! Mad Martha's seemed to be the best option on the island of Martha's Vineyard, so we checked out the Oak Bluffs spot. Like most things on the island, it's not cheap at $7 for a small, but the small is a decent size, it's no kiddie! I opted for snickers cream, a peanut butter ice cream with caramel swirls and chunks of snickers and sinful chocolate, a dark chocolate ice cream with Heath bar chunks. I enjoyed the Snickers flavor, the ice cream could have definitely been more peanutty and more chocolate wouldn't have hurt, but it was enjoyable. and a half out of five cones. As for the other flavor, Lauren felt it was a travesty to name something Sinful Chocolate that only had 1 extra type of chocolate in it, it was hardly sinful. As a chocolate it was ok, didn't make me wish I had more of it, so take that as it is. out of five cones. Both flavors best paired with more chocolate and Benee - Find an Island.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
So yummy . All the cream flavors are the best. Little pricey but so so good. Friendly people as well!

Meghan M.

Yelp
The ice cream was solid with typical options. They did offer a few dairy-free options, however very limited. Service was not great and there was few seating options.

Yelp
This is a hard review for one of us to write because she's been going to Mad Martha's since she was a kid. Ownership changed a while back and you can tell that the tender loving hands that used to run this place are missing. Listen, the ship has sailed for the whole "please bear with us since we are short staffed this season, yada yada yada." It's over. This is the new reality. Deal with it. If you cannot handle a peak summer crowd, then close your shop up rather than run it the way it was being run tonight. Here's the scene when we enter. Line to the door. ONE GUY working the entire place! Taking the orders, making the ice creams/shakes/etc, working the register. Not his fault that it takes over half an hour even to get to the front of the line! It's the idiot manager here and he is why we are giving this place the one star it doesn't even deserve. While we were waiting in line, we saw this manager feller come out. He surveyed the scene and you know what he decided to do? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. He looked around, decided not to jump in and help the poor guy hustling for minimum wage and then disappeared to the back. BUT WAIT!!!!! Here he comes back out again five minutes later! He changed his mind! He wants to help! No, false alarm! He is just there to show this poor harried guy something on the phone! And he laughs and then disappears again. WHAT THE WHAT!!! The guy looked like the dregs of what comes out of the worst part of the Jersey shore and it is no surprise that he would run this enterprise like the fool that he surely is. It pains us to admit that we really like this ice cream. All three of our flavors tonight--M&M, snickers, mint oreo--were great. The ice cream has a nice bite to it. We'd be lying if we said that we were never coming back because we will since it's family tradition. Hopefully someone legitimate and worthy will take it from the current loser managing this place!

Yelp
I have been coming to Mad Martha's since I was a little kid with my parents when Jaws was a new release. As a college student, I served it at my job at the Aquinnah shop in what was then Gay Head. The point of all this is that I have been around long enough to rate Mad Martha's as the best ice cream on the island. My favorite sundae is the sinful chocolate. The frappes here were my favorite as a kid and I have probably consumed 500 coffee and chocolate frappes. The best ice cream flavors are black raspberry, which I learned to like as an older man, and coffee, which I have always liked. Most recently, I tried the peppermint, which was good. The wife ordered a combination of coconut and coffee and reported it to be delicious. The staff here is always friendly. The restaurant is a fun mix of what my old man would call "local color," teenagers, cretins and children. Sometimes the children are annoying, but it is always a fun experience. The wife and I try to make it to MV once a summer and the wife has required at least two trips to Mad Martha's per visit.

Yelp
its 2018 and they dont accept credit cards, stupid. i used to work in the merchant industry and EVERY study shows high single to low double digit increases in sales from accepting credit cards. AND they are ridiculously easy to integrate into any business. they must be mind-blowingly ignorant. perhaps..... perhaps someone should wonder if they are are reporting their profits to the I.R.S. because why else would you ONLY want to work in cash in 2018!!! (i'm not accusing Mad Marthas of this, i'm just asking the question). Perhaps an audit is in order. ....and more suspicuous, ALL 3 ice cream stores on the block don't accept cards, but everyone around them does.... so i'm offended AND suspicious. Whats the IRS number for reporting this? again....not accusing...just asking....
google avatar

Allison Y.

Yelp
My family went here because apparently the Obamas have been to this place! Ice cream was delicious--my mom and I split a sundae and they were generous with the scoops and whipped cream. There's plenty of space in the shop though, they can definitely fit more tables and chairs--there simply wasn't enough space for all of the customers! Also, including prices on their wall designs for all of their specials would be helpful in the future.

Yelp
The line was long, and it was moving slowly. HOWEVER, hello it's cape cod/islands during the summer. The two girls working were moving quickly and efficiently despite a single person ordering 5 cones and trying to juggle them... I ordered two scoops of Reeses cream in a waffle cone. The portion was so generous; I could have / should have only ordered one scoop! But, you know I ate every bite of it and enjoyed it. It was perfectly sweet, creamy, and peanut butter-y. I would definitely recommend going here after dinner, or after the beach, or after strolling around... Basically, any time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
I think my family ate here at least 10x over our 7 day trip here. Awesome ice cream! 'Shark Attack' was a family favorite!
google avatar

Amy E.

Yelp
Super yummy! Got sinful chocolate and omg was it one of the best flavor ice creams I've had! Giant chunks of toffee and super creamy. Wish I lived closer so I could go every weekend!
google avatar

A S.

Yelp
Incredible ice cream. CASH ONLY. we had 3 double scoop cups. The blueberry and strawberry were amazing. The pistachio was incredible and refreshing. The m&m and Oreo were some of the best I've had. We will be bank tomorrow. . We're from an ice cream store family background.

Hey C.

Yelp
Delish! So cute and fun, huge portions kids loved it. The vanilla ice cream was lovely
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Got a quick two scoops for the boat ride back to Hyannis. Very creamy and great flavors. Also quick in and out service. Only complaint is the serving size. Almost half the size you'd get for the price on the mainland. But it's MV ‍
google avatar

A M.

Yelp
Terrible customer service! We prefer going to Edgartown where the service is nicer and appears to have employees that like people. Too bad because ice cream is yummy!

Mia S.

Yelp
walked in 30 mins before closing after asking if it was okay to come in and were told it was and we saw the full tubs of dairy free ice cream and they said "we have no ice cream" absolutely ridiculous
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
Wonderful homemade ice cream! I got a scoop of Oreo and a scoop of mud pie on a waffle cone while My gf got a scoop of mocha. We enjoyed every lick while we walked the nice streets of Oak Bluffs!
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
OH LORD!! The ice cream is sooooo fluffy and delicious here. It's not as dense as ice cream so I'm pretty sure they churn it with a lot of air. Something between ice cream and gelato. Got the mint oreo and it sure did not disappoint. My siblings got mocha chip and pistachio and both were very pleasing to the taste buds. We got the 3 scoop deal for a little over $5. Good eats after dinner around the area.
google avatar

Spurthi A.

Yelp
We got the coconut and blueberry flavors. The coconut was good but the blueberry wasn't too great to me. It had a minty taste to it. Overall it's a good place but nothing overly special.
google avatar

Court S.

Yelp
Ummm, where do I start? I came down to the Vineyard for a day and had to stop here because of their homeade cookie ice cream sandwich. Its 2 huge chocochip cookies with you choice of ice cream in the middle. I chose m&m. So So SO delicious. It photographed well & was a hit on instagram! I really wanted to try their ice cream drinks (cranberry juice w/ vanilla ice cream) but I was too full from the sandwich and didn't want the sugar overload... Service is super friendly. I will be back next summer. Cash only$$
google avatar

Yan W.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream. The type of ice cream where you get it all over your face and pants and you don't care who sees. I had the chocolate and it was worth the cleaning bill.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I had a chocolate flavor with bits of heath bar in it. Loved getting that heath crunch in every bite.
google avatar

Moni K.

Yelp
It is so hard to pick a flavor. I really want to eat them all. First time I had pistachio ice cream that was not green. Mad Martha's is really mad! I was skeptical but in am a changed person. This was the best ice cream I had since the last time I ate at Mad Martha's! True ice cream Without any fake additives. So so good.
google avatar

Robby T.

Yelp
Underwhelming overall. Snotty, aloof service combined w/ muted flavors (coffee ice cream barely resembled coffee at all) made for a bland experience. Won't be returning to this location.
google avatar

Alittle G.

Yelp
Iconic. Creamy. Delicious. Great selection. Not artisanal, but more old fashioned creamy old school more on the fluffy side texture than dense deliciousness This review is for the Oak Bluffs location. Flavors are fun, if a little bit on the sweet side. Kids love it. You must stop here if you are on the Vineyard.
google avatar

Mona L.

Yelp
Ice cream was terrible! Tastes cheap... Never going back... my boyfriend and I left them on the counter uneaten. Staff was rude which made it even worse!!!

Ryan M.

Yelp
Really good orange creme! They have also a massive array of flavors. Great ac. A must come in my books

Miles A.

Yelp
Ice cream is phenomenal and there are unique flavors and creations. The inside of the shop is spacious and air conditioned.
