12 Spots for Fresh Seafood Boils in Chicago, 2018 Edition | Eater Chicago

"Located just a few blocks away from the Madhouse on Madison is a similarly frenzied operation. Head to Mad Boiler before or after an event at the United Center to recharge on seafood-y treasures. King crab legs, whole lobsters, and Dungeness crabs can be doused in coconut curry or Cajun dry rub, making for an exquisite oceanic spread. They’re accompanied by items such as shrimp po’ boys, fried scallops, and crab fried rice. Save some room at the end, though, as the chocolate chip cookie dough eggroll provides a satisfyingly sweet sendoff." - Jeffy Mai

The mussels and prawns were amazing, well marinated in the buttery garlic sauce, and tasted fresh. The crawfish didn’t feel as fresh as the rest. Overall, decent budget-friendly seafood boil spot.

Google
Casual, great/fast service, and great prices! I usually go during the weekday (both at lunch and dinner time) to avoid any rush hour. Both times I’ve gone I was super satisfied with the portions, flavor, and how fast everything came out super hot (understand 20 mins, give it take). Will be going back!

Google
We visited this place , but unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations. The crawfish had an off, not-so-fresh taste, and the seasoning used in the dish was too harsh and didn’t complement the seafood well. However, the staff was very friendly and attentive, and the service itself was great. Sadly, the quality of the food left us disappointed. Hopefully, the kitchen improves in the future.

Google
This place exceeded my expectations. The boil bag was very flavorful, the corn was sweet and was just overall. Y’all are goin places.

Google
Best seafood boil in Madison WI hands down. Food is always hot, fresh, and cooked to perfection. Service is great. I overall love coming to this location! I will say it is much better dining in I have ordered take out as well and it’s not the same I feel like the quality was poor ordering on DoorDash but my doordasher took forever to bring my order so I don’t believe it’s at fault of the restaurant itself. Also the restaurant is very clean.

Google

Google
The dining experience at this restaurant was wonderful. The food was delicious and exceeded my expectations. The waitress promptly seated us upon arrival, took our order efficiently, and our dishes arrived within a reasonable 10-15 minute timeframe. My personal favorite was the octopus poke bowl, which was a refreshing change from the typically heavier poke bowls I have had in the past. This particular dish was light and packed with fresh vegetables, a welcomed change that I appreciated. We also tried their seafood combo number 1 and number 2, both of which were bursting with flavors of cajun spices and other unique seasonings. I would highly recommend giving this restaurant.

Google
The sushi is good but it nothing special. it's good but eh I can get better somewhere else. buuuut the seafood boil is AMAZING!

Yelp
By far the best Seafood boil place in America. Best prices. Best food I've ever had. They are always fast and very helpful with service. They also give you all the tools to enjoy the feast in a great environment! I found MAD in my second year of college and it was THE place my girlfriend and I would go everytime she visited. I have since graduated and I am SO SAD I no longer have access to this place. If you are in a 30 mile vicinity I recommend you go here and enjoy it, for me!

Yelp
Mad Seafood Boiler is a great dining option if you are craving seafood boil combos, seafood, and sushi! They have snow crab legs, king crab legs, and even lobster! It's a trendy, affordable, casual, fun place to enjoy seafood with your friends/family but prepared to get hands on busy with your food especially the messy buttery seafood boils! It reminds me of an Asian/Cajun style restaurant that brings the sauce with a-lot of delicious mouthwatering sauce options like garlic butter, lemon pepper, and you can choose how spicy you want the sauce! They serve a variety of different sushi, poke bowls, and even raw oyster platters but their seafood boils are the main attraction! You can pick different general seafood boil combos which have a nice mix of different seafood like crab legs, mussels, shrimp, crawfish, with sides like corn on the cob and rice. I love you can completely customize your seafood boil picking specifically the type seafood you want and how much of it, the type of sauce, and pick the sides. Even order more of a specific seafood, extra sides, and sauces like a la carte if you want! I put on my bib, gloves, and was excited to dig into my seafood boil combo with crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and shrimp! My seafood boil was hot and fresh! My spicy garlic cajun butter sauce took the seafood boil to the next level! It was absolutely delicious with an explosion of buttery, spicy, Cajun goodness but definitely messy so definitely wash your hands well afterwards or use hand wipes they provide! The service was great and prompt also! I definitely plan to come back to try more entree options! I really enjoyed Mad Seafood Boiler!

Yelp
My first review needs little updating aside from the fact that since my first visit, I've been to a few more Vietnamese-Cajun seafood boiler restaurants and this one still stands out as the best I've had outside of Washington DC and New Orleans. Make sure you wear the bib.

Yelp
Fun place for seafood boil! My daughter and I were visiting while she was in town for business and we drove past a few times, and decided to give it a try. Lots of great seafood, great spicy options to add in your boil, which my daughter loved. Service was a little slow, but friendly. Fun atmosphere to go for a date, or to bring older kids who want to try something different. Would go back when visiting Madison again, for sure!

Jake Y.

Yelp
Got the seafood boil and was not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. All the seafood tasted good. I really liked the mussels. Service was fine, although the restaurant was a bit chaotic.

Cia C.

Yelp
Ok I don't even know where to start the bathroom was very disgusting very unsanitary. There's cleaning supplies on the floor and bath room inside stalls look ran down. Food was great. Staff? Horrible they never pay attention they're always on their phones. She saw us asking for help but than didn't even help she glanced and just completely ignored.. until another customer came in.. I wouldn't recommend going to this place unless u can handle their attitudes..

Yelp
Love the seafood boil, and the sushi/sashimi. They have the soy paper wraps, and cooked "sushi" for those of us that despise raw fish and seaweed.
google avatar

Dynae S.

Yelp
I've been here quite a few times since they opened. They have an amazing black rice sushi (all their sushi I've tried has been fresh and great). All of their seafood boil combos are great, combos have changed overtime. Used to be larger more expensive combos for groups to split and now it seems to have branched out to smaller less expensive combos but for 3 people with tip we spent about $200. I always get the combo with all 3 flavors combined and level 3 spicy level (not spicy at all to me). Eggs are an extra $1.50 but it's so worth it to me. Love leftovers from here and their service is so friendly and on point! I will continue to treat myself to their meals when a craving hits!!

Yelp
Bib me up! It's bout to get real messy in hereee! This place has been on my to go list for a hot second, and hot hot hot it was. I went with two buds and we were getting hangry. We ordered the Combo Wow Platter and a deep fried roll. The battle gear: a rocking hot bib with some plastic gloves to match. In comes the food, presented tied up plastic bag. Doesn't make for the craziest appetizing look, but untie it and BOOM it's a blast in the face of seafood buttery goodness. You had a choice of 3 kinds of butter, so of course we chose all three. Let's dissect this Combo wow: Crab legs - tbh disappointing, very little meat on these dudes. You'd break open a fatty leg hoping for a feast and all you got was the tinniest sliver of meat. Shrimp - these dudes soak up that sawwwce! This is the money ticket. Cooked well and classic Sausage - a delightful surprise of flavor! I only wish there were more Corn and potatoes - these are a welcome addition to the butter seafood bath, nothing amazing but yummy nonetheless The BUTTER - honestly was the highlight. I mean it's butter and it's spicy butter. My two favorite food groups. The deep fried roll was yummy! Even though it was deep fried it was a surprising fresh side to the seafood fiesta. It all ended up being 28 ish with tip. It's a fun experience and yummy, but maybe not the bestest value (although I define good value as my pants bursting at the seams and only a minimal dent in my poor college student income). Pro tip - with that left over butter, poor it all up in the rice you get. It's crazy delicious. TLDR: get the cute bib, with some splashes of butter on your face. You won't be taken aback by the seafood but be prepared for a butter filled heart

Yelp
We ordered here for a birthday dinner last night and it was good/medium quality. The prices are arguably decent for crab legs and fish, but there was such a fishy scent for everything we got. I ordered a poke bowl and the tuna didn't seem fresh, but I got through about half of the bowl. The crab legs came soaking in the butter garlic and I wished the corn wasn't also soaked. The shrimp dumplings were okay too, pretty squishy. Things were good, just not amazing.
google avatar

Joyce G.

Yelp
Mussels were tougher than they should have been. Shrimp were older. Like they reheated in the microwave on this occasion. Cajun flavor had no seasoned flavor. Zatarains from the bottle or box could have worked. 1 corn was old. The other corn was fine but even it nor the potatoes could soak up a flavor profile for that "cajun" seasoning. Try the lemon pepper flavor. Proper spring roll. I've had other places give an egg roll and call it a spring roll. Signage around says you cant substitute rice for corn, potatoes nor egg. I don't get the value not purpose of the rice just yet. They are running specials via Facebook or direct call ins for togo orders.
google avatar

Kelli T.

Yelp
Food was yummy and of a good quantity but it is served in a very casual manner (like most items arrive in a plastic bag!)
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
The sushi was great! Delicious. They charged extra for the amount spicy mustard I like on my sushi--but I can overlook such nonsense But the appetizer--calamari with French fries was a HUGE disappointment! I forgot to take a picture because I was so disappointed--lots of French fries topped with a pitiful amount of calamari rings (Fried from frozen)--how can a restaurant that calls itself Seafood put this on the menu
google avatar

LaRon C.

Yelp
Good! If you want sea food this is the place. They fill a bag up with crustaceans of your choice. I went on my birthday & won a free pound of crawfish off the birthday prize wheel. You pick the sauce & how spicy . Add some potatoes ,corn & rice & you're having a good time. I wore my bib but i opted out of gloves & napkins. It was so fun getting all messy & digging into this flavorful, large, sea food dish. No complaints here. But if I could give one suggestion I would say add some type of biscuit or some bread of some type. Otherwise this was a superb dining experience.

Yelp
I am basing this off of the meal only as I did a take out order for my debut stop at this place. I got the king salmon poke' bowl as it was ranked as popular item among customers and I love me some good salmon. The people were right as my poke' bowl was darn good! Super fresh ingredients, melt in your mouth salmon chunks. Very nice wasabi mayo sauce as well. Real sushi rice as it should be. Portion is pretty decent as well. My order was ready 5 minutes early when I came in to get it so they work fast. Place was not too busy at all when I stopped in about 815pm on a Wednesday night. I want to try their many, many, appetizers and sushi rolls next time. Their menu has a long list of each and they sounded so good!
google avatar

Kayley R.

Yelp
Absolutely stellar! I ordered the Combo A with Mussels, garlic butter, and mild spice. It was so flavorful and filling! This is a great spot to go with a group of friends for a comforting Sunday night meal. The waiter we had was great. I would recommend going here if you're looking for some good seafood!
google avatar

Eve R.

Yelp
Price was great for a seafood boiler! They had items available that accounted for the mess eating a boiler can create. Shrimp, which was my main meat, had zero taste.
google avatar

Thuy Dan T.

Yelp
You will get lost in the sauce here and ITS REALLY GOOD! If you're a saucy one, this is def for you. It's on the saltier side but mixed your seafood and sides in there and it balances it out. You get a bib and a some super thin plastic gloves (I double pair and ask for more half way through). If you get the combos - along with the seafood choice, you also get corn and potatoes. For 2 people, we get 1 combo and then 1 lb of something else with the side of sausage (so good!). The shrimp is good size and juicy - skin is soft enough to eat with or peel easy. The clams were a big win for us and using the shell to scoop some extra sauce and a little rice is the perfect bite. The biggest disappointment but to not much surprise given we're in the Midwest was the crawfish - they were pretty small with very little meat. We got it with everything sauce (Cajun, garlic, lemon pepper) which I'm telling you, is really good. Staff is quick and attentive. No frilly stuff, just straight to business. Price I think is also really reasonable given the amount of food.
google avatar

Dar P.

Yelp
I have been to this place multiple times since it's its opening and it never lets me or my guest down!! Best seafood boil I have had in the Midwest! Head off shrimp, crab legs, sausage, potato, and corn are my go to. Depending on the company the butter garlic is good, I am a huge fan of the spicy!! It's very spicy and good. It's always fun to wear a bib while you eat. Not sure this is a first date kinda meal though....

Yelp
3.5 stars. Again, as my previous review stated, this is NOT southern cajun food, but a new Asian style cajun that has become popular over the past couple of years (so don't come in expecting Louisiana style crawfish). I still come here quite often because this is the only seafood restaurant of this style in the area and I'm very happy that they have picked up business. That in mind, things can get busy and there have been times where we have waited well over 30-45 minutes to get our food on a Wednesday (so don't come here if you have somewhere to go afterwards). I would stay away from the other specials, like teriyaki dinner, etc. While cheap, not very tasty. They used to have good seafood combos available, but now I notice that prices of the combos are pretty compatible with just getting pounds of whatever seafood you want, which is something to take into consideration. I'm most disappointed that they took away the sausage from their origins (added more potato) and that the sauce quality has gone way down. Before, it used to be delicious and garlicky, and now there is barely any garlic flavor, just oil. I hope they start making their sauce like they used to again. When I come here, I like anything with head-on shrimp and snow crab. Crawfish isn't as good as some other places, so not my top choice but I enjoy them in the combos. Overall, decent option for Madison, just wish that service was faster and they went back to their original quality.
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
This spot delivered in perfect timing, after checking over the order we were missing only 2 items. We ordered enough to feed an army and even had left overs. Never got the two missing items but the company was too delightful to notice.
google avatar

Malia Y.

Yelp
Edit: 1/12/19 Sadly, this place is hit or miss which is very disappointing. I shared Combo B once again with someone else. This batch lacked flavor, the crawfish, and potentially 1/2 pound of shrimp. They were nice enough to provided the crawfish on a separate plate. We can't say for certain if the 1/2 pound was missing because we realized this halfway in.
google avatar

Gayl B.

Yelp
Why is it that after a poke bowl, your tummy is always so pleasantly pleased? The salmon poke bowl is very fresh tasting with edamame, avocado, cucumber slices, rice and greens. I had mine with poke sauce and would recommend tossing it to enjoy the great tasting sauce before eating your way down to find the yummy sauce! I also shared a small spicy crab roll with black rice. After reading the story about the health benefits of black rice, I just had to taste it, and it really is good! I'll be looking for this black rice from now on, especially if these health benefits are true! This is a great place to dine with a variety of items on the menu.
google avatar

Gail S.

Yelp
The California roll was fantastic. The mussels were probably the worst meal I've ever had. They were too big to be tender. Hard to chew and not de-bearded. Really full of gunk inside. I ordered the lemon pepper sauce, but the predominant taste was the finely chopped onion that thickly coated the mussels. I usually like mussels, but these were bad.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Update: Less than a week later and came back. Even better, as less crowded and seafood was steamed a little less. Perfect. Don't expect big crawfish, but do expect exceptional flavor. Clams and mussels are excellent. Suggest three sauce combo option, and spiciness tends to low end of scale so I would suggest if you like medium order hot, and hot order extra hot. The small combo was still a good deal of food and very satisfying. They really should provide a few moist wipes with the meal as you are going to use your hands. Nice to wipe before, during so you can drink your wine/beer, and after. Still, a different experience for Madison and very good anywhere. Initial Review: We did not try the sushi, but it did look quite good, the chefs were careful, and the selection very good. This review is about the seafood boiling. We would give 4.5 stars as they were a little rigid about having to order by the pound. Would have like to be able to do clams, shrimp, crawfish by the half pound. Very friendly and attentive staff. They were happy to explain and make recommendations. We ordered a combo and added a lobster tail. You also pick a sauce or try all three combined like we did - awesome if you like garlic. And you pick how spicy. We went with medium. Probably could have gone hit. They ease up fir the Midwest palate. Had heard the seafood was served in a bag, but they stopped that unless you ask for it, as folks in Madison could not get their heads around it. Bag is supposed to keep the food warmer longer. Ours was served in s nice dish. They also have a large discard bucket and plenty of napkins in a well designed dispenser, and you will need them. The food was very good, and the sauce excellent. Clams were small and tender. Crawfish too. Shrimp were clean and flavorful and you can order with heads in or off. Sausage was very good, especially with the sauce. Lobster tail was large and full of sweet meat. Snow crab was excellent as the sauce/broth permeates the cluster and is awesome. The food was cooked almost perfectly. Done but not over done. Beer and wine only, but a decent selection of both. Good value for the price. A combo easily fed two adults, and I am sure would satisfy a larger appetite. Nice addition to the madison food scene. Good to have something different and excellent. Casual, and don't wear your good clothes as she'll and sauce will fly!
google avatar

Janelle Z.

Yelp
Love how they give you gloves, a bib, and put down a table cloth. This type of food is meant to be ate messy! Makes it taste soo much better!
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
I had gotten mixed reviews about this place from friends, but I've been really interested in trying so I finally did. Went with my mom and we were sat right away on a busy Friday night. We had been wondering why they weren't extremely busy with more tables filled, but the service was super fast and food came out really quick. That probably made for good table turnover time. We ordered edamame, the avocado salad, deep fried crab with French fries, the Tiger roll, and the Hot Girl roll. Of all the food, the French fries were actually the best I've had anywhere in town. The sushi rolls weren't mind blowing, but they hit the spot on the craving I'd been having. Edamame is edamame, can't really jazz that up, but the portion was plentiful. We plan to go back and try more of the seafood options.
google avatar

Suzy T.

Yelp
Honestly it's such a great price for a HUGE serving. I am obsessed with they're mussels, and Cajun seasoning.
google avatar

Maeghan N.

Yelp
Great place for sushi and sashimi. They have a wide variety of rolls. This place is located convenient to State Street downtown. My husband doesn't like raw fish, and it's great they have hot food too!
google avatar

Esther Y.

Yelp
Food is great for the price! Only $13.99 for a lobster tail? Eat it with the garlic butter and Cajun. YUM. I came during restaurant week, and the service was lacking. The drinks were not correct, some drinks never came, and some food was cold. However, the food was still good. I got the half pound snow crab and lobster, with sausage. Sausage is definitely the best side. Person with me got shrimp (with head on) and snow crab. Shrimp looked delicious. He said that the shrimp didn't absorb much of the garlic butter flavor but was still tasty. Second time I came was a normal day, but service was still a little spotty. Our water was never refilled, so I had to get up and ask. Not the end of the world, but the food can be spicy so water was appreciated. Will be coming back. Ok service, good food!

Yelp
Needs work, a lot of work. The atmosphere here is fine, and relatively upgraded to other crab boils. Big, spacious area with a lot of seating. Service was courteous and timely. No where to easily wash your hands after getting messy from such an involved meal - gotta go to the bathroom. They have been open a few weeks now, but, they don't serve alcohol yet. I had a pound of shrimp and pound of king crab in a mild, all three sauce, combination. Added corn and andouille sausage. Add ons for any of the bags are 2 dollars a pop. A little disappointing - corn is 5 ears for 2 bucks at the grocery store, come on! The meat was cooked perfectly. The sauce was awful. First of all, the base seemed not have butter, it is some other oil. Spices were absolutely off. I tasted no Cajun, lemon, or pepper. I think there was even some asian influence playing a role in the sauce - that is okay if it is, but, please call it what it is if you are going to change up the recipe. Though the meat was cooked perfectly, multiple dips into the sauce made me lose morale and hope that my spot would be hit. Every bite made me feel more and more nauseated. At a place like this, people really are searching for that flavor explosion - you wont get that here, sorry. This restaurant is still in their infancy. I think the smartest thing they could do at this time is fix their sauces while there is a chance for revival.
google avatar

Julee W.

Yelp
The miso soup was very good. It wasn't particularly hot but given my food was delivered, I'm not overly concerned. Followed my soup up with the avocado salad. The avocado was fresh and it was a nice blend of lettuce. Came with a ginger dressing that was light and not too sweet. Topped off my dinner with the crazy salmon roll. The roll itself was good and the salmon was tasty. Unfortunately, my food was delivered with regular soy sauce vs the low sodium almost masking the favors of the salmon. Overall, very good! I'd recommend eating at the restaurant vs delivery. That would resolve both issues.
google avatar

Tenny D.

Yelp
I ordered via DoorDash and got fried shrimp tempura, crab Rangoon and combination of 3 rolls. The fried shrimp tempura was a 4 piece with French fries. The shrimp was still crispy and the sauce was very flavorful. The French fries was soggy- I guess it couldn't hold the ride to my place. The crab Rangoon was the best out of what I got. It was full of tasty cheese and crab stuffing and came with a tasty sweet sauce. The rolls that I got was spicy tuna, spicy crab and Boston roll. Both tuna and crab were not spicy enough for me. The Boston roll was so so but all 3 rolls was extremely fresh. I am sure to go back and try this place in person!

Yelp
I visited this restaurant yesterday with my coworkers and this was the cleanest place I've been since visiting Madison! The restaurant has plenty of options whether you want fried rice, sushi, or the newly popular seafood boil bags there was a lot to choose from. The waiter was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I wish I had taken photos but the food was so delicious it was eaten within minutes! Everything was great and will definitely return before I leave Madison. Update: I returned and it was as good as the first time. Definitely a staple in Madison for sure!

Latoya A.

Yelp
The food was delicious. And not much interaction on the inside as I ordered on yelp. But Parking is extremely hard.

Yelp
Amazing food with amazing service. My boyfriend and I luckily came on his birthday, and this place has a wheel of free items you get to spin for the occasion. We ended up getting a free roll from the wheel! We started off with an order of yellowtail sushi and a black rice sushi roll since it sounded interesting. Both were pretty good but nothing outstanding. The real winner was the shrimp we ordered. 2 pounds of shrimp for only $14 a pound with 2 sides? Yes please! For the record, 2 pounds of shrimp is apparently 56 (yes we counted each and every one). The interesting thing to note is that the shrimp didn't come in a bag like usual. It was served in a black tray, which I much prefer. It was easy to grab the shrimp and dip them back in the sauce in such a fashion. We ordered a combination of sauces for the shrimp and it was so good and so buttery I couldn't get enough. The potatoes were soaked in the same sauce and were phenomenal. On top of that, our waitress was an incredibly sweet lady who checked on us constantly and provided us with everything we needed at all times. Also the logo is adorable. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
Great food with beautiful presentation! Went as a group of 5 and all of us ordered sushi. I definitely recommend getting something off the special sushi section, it's more worth it than the normal sushi (albeit pricie
google avatar

Nyah M.

Yelp
Greats size portions. 1lb of each type of fish is more than enough for 2 people. Also not super pricey. It had a good kick (we got medium) but if you want more spice try spicy. Overall definitely satisfies your seafood boil cravings.
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
Finally made it to Mad seafood boiler, had the combo B with all 3 seasonings at a medium spice level, did I like it? Well my waitress Sansa ask if I needed a spoon when she caught me drinking from the dish, yes it was good and my sodas were always kept full! Messy but delicious, I found the Crawfish useless but I'll definitely be back to try another combo
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
Loved this place. There's a great selection of boils and sushi! Got the mussel seafood boil, and the sauce was divine! The mussels were huge and juicy. Also enjoyed the Hot Girl Roll, the Eel and Avocado Roll, and the Black Dragon Roll. Everything was delicious.

Yelp
I wanted to take my husband somewhere where he could absolutely feast on seafood for his birthday. Somewhere casual. Those kinds of places are few and far between around here. Honestly, I even considered Red Lobster for a hot minute, then the hallelujah chorus started when I remembered Mad Seafood Boiler existed (thanks Yelp search). The atmosphere is sort of good. The decor is nice, but still feels casual. The tvs on the wall help that, and also allow you to catch the game while feasting. We arrived around 5:30 on a Friday and it was pretty empty, but it slowly got busier by the time we left. It felt like there were a lot of staff milling about, but service was a little slow at the start. So, the vibe was a little weird at first. Bonus-there was a birthday wheel where you could win a variety of menu freebies. He won a free beer. The food was great and at a reasonable price point. Hubby had king crab in garlic butter, no spice and shrimp in cajun butter, medium spice. He loved it all. Said it was cooked perfectly. I had a combo plate with snow crab, shrimp and mussels with everything butter and mild spice (due to spice level recommendations on here). It came with a small piece of corn, about 6 potato halves and surprisingly no sausage (I didn't miss it, so didn't say anything). I had to add hot sauce to the shrimp (mild spice was too mild for me), which was actually good because the vinegar tang added a nice note. The snow crab was a bit overcooked and hard to eat. Mussels and shrimp were perfect. I'd happily come back here again if in the mood for this kind of meal. A fun place to celebrate a birthday.

Yelp
I want my $11 back for this two $1 sushi plates they call "special rolls". It's a disgrace to chinese buffet sushi section who charges you about the same for more. Quality looks same to me. Grow up and do real food business. What a disappointment.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a very satisfying "Lupper" here today. Our "Combo A" offered a good spread of tastiness (1/2lb snow crab, 1/2lb shrimp, 1/2lb mussels, a corn cob, some sausage, and 6 or 7 baked potato halves) at a decent price ($21.) At 3:30pm on a Sunday, the restaurant was quiet and lent the perfect environment for an unplanned "Hey wanna go find food on state street" date. Service was run-of-the-mill, food was flavorful and exciting for a Kansas-born land-lubber, price wasn't bad at all, and the restaurant was comfy. I'm glad we chose to stop by.

Yelp
Get all the seasonings and fire hot flavor in your boil and it will change your life! I crave this all the time!

Yelp
I like this place. I've tried it three different times and had three different experiences; all great ones. The first time was the soft opening and there were some great specials. Free potatoes, sausage and corn. What a nice surprise. The next time -- there was a special on blue crab! Yes! Love Blue Crabs! The last time -- they had buy one get one for sushi rolls. I love all of these specials. The seasoning is great and the seafood comes out HOT. It is definitely messy -- but worth it. Tip: Get a bowl of rice to share with one other person. It helps with the spiciness. Add potatoes, sausage and corn to make the meal more filling. If you are able -- always get the shrimp and snow crabs. Totally worth it. Large pieces of shrimp that are easy to peel and the crab does not taste like it was frozen for months and does not have freezer burn, thankfully. Great for dates and groups. Family friendly. I am sure kids would love this. They also serve alcohol. Huge plus! Parking is tricky. Street parking or across the street with HopCat patrons.

Yelp
I am not sure why this restaurant isn't more highly rated. This is one of my favorite restaurants around the area! I tried it in the beginning since it was so unique offering seafood boil and since then, I have gone back several times. I like the seafood boil combo a lot - it's such an experience and the value is so good. Combo A ($28.99) with 1/2 lb shrimp, 1/2 lb snow crab legs, 1/2 lb mussels, or 1/2 lb crawfishes or side of sausages, corn, potato, and rice is my recommendation. It can feed probably 3-4 people and the restaurant give you gloves to eat the awesome food. The snow crab legs are my favorite and the crab meat pieces are large. The sauce for the boil can be mild or spicy - it's up to you to decide. If you can't handle spice, I would suggest mild but even mild is quite flavorful. Come and give this place a try if you want a new food experience!

Yelp
This has been my favorite seafood Outing since my tour de Madison has commenced. The food was great and filling. I wish they had a full bar but the options are endless.

Yelp
The great thing about Madison Restaurant Week is trying new restaurants ... and finding out which ones don't warrant a return visit. Mad Seafood Boiler is one of those restaurants. First impressions are everything, and this place fell short on so many levels: - I walked in the front door and a really pungent fish smell hit me. Good sushi restaurants (think: Red, Muramoto) don't smell like that. - There's a shelf unit of unorganized papers and office-y stuff next to the bar. I understand all restaurants have supplies like this, but typically patrons don't see this stuff, especially organized in a sloppy manner. It just seemed so junky to me. - What is the theme of the decor? The chairs look like they belong around a hibachi grill, the nautical wall art looks like it's from Pier 1, and the light fixtures have an uber-modern flair. None of this stuff goes together. - The menu is a mess! Certain spreads of pages were intentionally taped together so I couldn't see those offerings while other pages had sections of tape on top of the page to hide certain menu items. The staff evidently has to rotate dishes often and/or can't make a decision about what to offer on a set menu. Food first impressions: - My salmon poke bowl was actually quite good and my reason for giving 2 stars instead of 1. - The rest of the food (shrimp dumplings, takoyaki, monster roll, green tea ice cream, fried oreos) were fairly underwhelming. They didn't strike me as fresh and/or good quality. My husband even said the whole food experience was like a Chinese buffet with table service! - Want sushi or good-quality Asian fusion food? Just walk down Henry St. a few blocks down to Red. Not worth going back.

Yelp
Great food, fun concept, casual atmosphere. Don't wear good clothes! Fast service. Would return.
