The 10 Best Breakfast Spots In San Diego 2024 - San Diego - The Infatuation

"Breakfast at Café Madeleine is the move before plans at Balboa Park, when you should sit on their charming sidewalk patio as joggers dash by. This spot has a much better food selection than your average coffee shop, like lamb merguez sausage sandwiches and crepes smothered in nutella and fresh fruit. It’s also a great choice for a meal a little later in the day—go with the spinach or prosciutto crepe, which have a creamy bechamel sauce so smooth it could talk its way out of a speeding ticket. Everything goes down well with their refreshing, mint-spiked French lemonade." - sabrina medora

A GEM IN THE BARRIO We are absolutely delighted to have discovered Cafe Madeleine in the heart of Barrio Logan! From the moment we stepped inside, we knew we were in for a treat. This charming Mexican-style restaurant is a masterpiece, not just in terms of its exquisite cuisine, but also its stunning architecture and warm hospitality. Located within the award-winning Orchid Award of Architecture building in San Diego, Cafe Madeleine is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. The beautifully decorated interior is a perfect blend of traditional Mexican flair and modern comfort, making you feel right at home. But what truly sets Cafe Madeleine apart is its exceptional staff. The team is incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely invested in ensuring that every guest has an outstanding experience. From the moment you arrive, they'll go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and cater to your every need. And then, of course, there's the food - oh, the food! Every dish we've tried has been expertly prepared with the freshest ingredients, showcasing the rich flavors and traditions of Mexican cuisine. The attention to detail and care that goes into every meal is evident, and it's clear that the team takes immense pride in their craft. What we love most about Cafe Madeleine, however, is the sense of community and warmth that permeates every aspect of the restaurant. It's not just a place to grab a meal; it's an experience that will leave you feeling full, happy, and eager to return. If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable dining experience in San Diego, look no further than Cafe Madeleine. We can't recommend it enough!

This place is a GEM! We went relatively early on a Saturday morning, so it was quiet, but the food, the service, and the vibe were amazing. It’s a gorgeous, airy space. Coffee was perfect and both of us loved our food. Will definitely go back.

Heard about this new cafe from instagram foodie @socalyums - Madeleine just opened a couple of weeks ago. We couldn’t have been happier with our breakfast choices - summer omelette for my wife with fresh ingredients, including squash blossoms, a the simple breakfast for me, which included scrambled eggs cooked to perfection and breakfast potatoes that were seasoned perfectly. The tea brand they use is excellent - Dammann Freres. Hosts and staff were attentive and very nice. Definitely a new go to place for us!

The open air patio was a glorious surprise! I had the goat cheese salad which was fresh and well seasoned. Felt like a perfect place for a working lunch or peaceful brunch. I will absolutely be back!

I got the salmon sandwich with truffle fries. Literally best fries and salmon sandwich that I’ve had here in California. I also got cold brew, coffee, and coconut lemonade. So freaking good

This cafe is super cozy and relaxing! Always a nice breeze coming through so I might get a little bit chilly. The staff are always nice and attentive, they always greet you with a smile. The food is fresh but on the expensive side. The chicken sandwich is the best dish I had so far and the bakery items are so pretty and delicious! The coffee is decent, on the pricier side. Overall the atmosphere is calm, refreshing and cozy. Perfect place to catch up with some friends and then head over to see all the shops by Chicano park.

Yelp
Stopped by to meet up with a coworker and can report that this is a solid spot to do WFH if you want! As you can see the food looks delicious and there are specific coffees they have here versus their north park location. It does get a bit chilly here and with the open roof concept, it has potential to get a little loud. However it's very cozy and the staff was very warm and inviting. Will come back again to check out more stuff on the menu!

Yelp
Honestly love this place! The guy at the front who takes your order is super nice and knowledgeable on the menu and pastries on the side. Came here twice for brunch and everything I've tried has been good. My favorite is their Madelines of course and their chocolate chip with macadamia and coconut cookies. It's a hit or miss if the place is quiet or loud. Depends on what day and time you come in. The coffee is pretty good too! Tried their banana latte and it tasted different from the first and second time. Not bad but wish it was more consistent with drinks.

Yelp
Good food. Service can be a little tricky at this location. You order at counter, and need to have your order ready before reaching the counter. Once you order, you are given a number, and the staff brings your food and drinks. Their South Park location is set up for customers to get their own water, napkins etc... This location isnt quite set up the same, the water and the hot sauce are hidden. Suggestion: Put up a sign directing customers to have their order ready when they reach the counter. The place is a counter-service (order at counter, take a number, food is brought to you) restaurant. I've visited their SP location and know you order at the counter, However, when I walked I expected a hostess. The space is so beautiful, open and aesthetically pleasing that I forgot all the rules. Could easily be four or five stars. The service at this location is tricky though.

Yelp
Was in barrio logan on a Saturday morning with some friends and was looking for a place to have brunch and saw Madeline has recently opened. I've been a fan of their north park location and heard their barrio logan location was focused on more mexican-style dishes, which we loved! The vibes of the space were immaculate, beautiful and inviting. The whole space felt really great to see and sit in, loved the color scheme and how airy it was in there. The service was also wonderful, everyone was so nice there. The food was good, though a few dishes were so salt. On one hand, i was like wow these dishes have more seasoning than most places so yessss, but most of us agreed that every breakfast dish felt a bit over salted, especially the spanish omelette. They had just opened though as well so i imagine they'll be adjusting some flavors here and there. The Cubano sandwich though was delicious, hands down fire. stuffed and the fries were crissssp in the best way. wil def come back to try some pastries, and the coffee was great too!

Yelp
Madeleine has opened in a ground floor area of the Los Patios Apartments in Barrio Logan. Unlike its older brethren, the word 'cafe' has been omitted from the business name, however the ownership was the same. Curbside parking on National Ave or a nearby side street was available. The space was more expansive than it looked from the outside. To the right of the service counter was an open courtyard within the interior of the complex that provided on-site seating. It was a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of natural lighting. The two-page menu featured breakfast plates, lunch plates, and drinks. Baked goods and pastries were on display at the service counter. I was passing by the area and wanted a beverage and a dessert. My choices were the French Lemonade and a Passionfruit Cheesecake. The drink was blend of fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and sparkling water topped with a mint sprig. It was sufficiently tart, however the fizzy water detracted. The cheesecake was shaped like a large round tart. The base layer was cheesecake while a passionfruit gelatin made up the top that was adorned by four strawberry slices. The sweet treat looked beautiful and was priced at $10. If I had more time and brought my laptop, then I would have ordered a plate and hung out in the courtyard to do some work. My visit to this newest branch of Madeleine was at a four star level.

Yelp
This is a fairly knew Madeleine location in the Barrio Logan, San Diego. I stopped in a little after 8 am Sunday morning. I wanted one of their famous almond croissants but they were still 30 minutes away from being ready, so I had to settle for a butter croissant. I didn't understand why the baked goods were not ready since they had already been open since 7 am. At any rate, the cortado I ordered was very well made. It was smooth with a rich coffee flavor. On a side note, they use "illy Coffee," a terrific 100% Arabica Coffee. The butter croissant was very good. It was quite buttery, slightly flaky, and soft. It tasted very good. Next time, the almond croissant for sure. The service at the counter was very good. The young gent who made my cortado did a great job. I was disappointed that the pastry and baked goods display was not filled when I visited. It's nice to see all those wonder items in the display. They offer a very good amount of inside seating. Street parking only.

Came with a friend and enjoyed the space. Very cute and cozy. Only thing is it's a little breezy but overall cute ambiance. Service is also super friendly.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this little gem in Barrio Logan after dropping off a Turo rental and I am well pleased I did! Lots of coffee choices I remember growing up with in my own hometown barrio. The service is so friendly and the ambiance is very relaxing and clean. They offer a great selection of wines and pastries, (try the tarts!) along with several breakfast items. I will be back when in the San Diego area!

Yelp
The food was amazing and had so many amazing options. I will have to come here again to try more things! The patio was a great place to enjoy the food!

Yelp
Excellent pastries, Cubano coffee, the food I had...everything excellent at this new Madeleine. Very attentive staff and beautiful restaurant nicely decorated that transport me to a blend of Paris meets Mexico City. Very lovely quiet atmosphere. To use the bathrooms remember to ask for the key as it is located outside, at the patio shared with the apartment building Madeleine is located. I did not have issues finding parking. I can't wait to be back. Perfect mix of seating styles too.

Yelp
It's great to have this location here in barrio logan now! The vibe and decor is pretty nice, it's within a lobby of a complex. The drinks were good and the food was solid. Got the madaleine omelette and the meile latte. Great place to chill and work away from home!

Yelp
We went about 6 weeks ago and loved the original menu and the vibe. The owner chatted with us for a while, which we liked. Also, I appreciate a restaurant with good tea (not everyone wants coffee!) and theirs was so good! We hope to go again soon.

Yelp
Madeleine has Coffee & Brunch and is a true brunch treasure. From the moment you step inside, the warm ambiance, stylish decor, and inviting aroma of fresh coffee make it feel like a cozy getaway. I ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs, and it was perfectly done -- fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The house pancakes were a standout too -- light, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweet. Their coffee game is strong. I had a cortado and an oat milk latte -- both were smooth, well-balanced, and crafted with care (bonus points for the latte art!). The staff is friendly, service is quick but relaxed, and it's the kind of place you'll want to stay a little longer -- whether you're catching up with friends or just enjoying a quiet morning. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for quality brunch and coffee in a feel-good space.

Yelp
Cafe Madeleine delivers on flavor and comfort with two standout items: the rajas crepe and the chicken sandwich. The crepe is rich and smoky, filled with roasted poblano peppers, onions, and cheese. It was a warm, savory dish that's both satisfying and unique. But the real star is the chicken sandwich, elevated by the bold, addictive ají aioli. The sauce brings a bright, tangy heat that perfectly complements the juicy grilled chicken and fresh, crusty bread. Simple ingredients, expertly executed. Highly recommend both!! The staff is all very nice and Dante especially was a gem :)

Yelp
The food is amazing and the service is the best I have had for brunch in a long time. Amazing ambiance and I can't wait to be back next weekend.
