Midwestern Mexican Restaurants and Tortilla Makers Are Embracing Indigenous Nixtamalization - Eater Detroit

"Ostosh and her partner Renata Fernández Domínguez launched Madre Masa in 2022 to offer their community tortillas using nixtamalized corn grown in western Michigan. They nixtamalize and stone-grind organic blue dent or yellow Wapsie Valley corn using a countertop molinito — an electric mill equipped with volcanic basalt rock. Each Friday, they transform their home kitchen into a makeshift tortilleria and sell packages of fresh tortillas and masa." - Serena Maria Daniels

We went for dinner and to start we ordered the vegetable samosas, which were rather soggy. We also had the mixed vegetable pakoras, which were ok. The lassi was delicious. I had the chicken tikka masala, it lacked some salt but fortunately it was an easy fix. The lamb was very tasty, but the meat had a lot of fat. The honey dragon chilly was good. For dessert we ordered the double ka meetha and I had to spit it...it was very unpleasant. 😳 I informed the waitress about it. The men's bathroom was dirty and the urinal was out of service. I'll end this review adding that the servers were kind.

While we came for dinner they do offer a lunch buffet. Our dinner was over great, food met all our expectations and had good flavors, serving sizes and aroma. Service was ok, a little behind but with 5 tables and 1 worker it can be that way, maybe it was just that time of the evening. The inside still reminds me of the seafood place it was before as nothing really has changed it seems, but thats not why you come here. The food did seem very authentic and fresh. Bathrooms were ok.

So yummy! I can’t wait to go back- this is my favorite place around this area for Indian food. I brought my mom here- it was her first time eating Indian food and she is HOOKED. The spice is perfection. So many delicious menu choices!!!!! I want to come back for the buffet so I can try a bunch of different things, my taste buds LOVE it here. Friendly service. The space is clean and open.

I really love Indian food, and this place had some great options! The masala dosa was a bit too oily for my taste, but another dosa I tried was excellent — crispy and flavorful. I really enjoyed the chicken biryani, but the chicken tikka masala was a bit too mild and not as rich or thick as I prefer. If you like milder flavors, it might suit you better. The uttapam was fantastic — soft, flavorful, and definitely a highlight of the meal!

Food is tasty. We tried Butter chicken, naan and chicken biriyani. However, to make tasty they put excessive sugar into the butter chicken. It was too sweet and more gravy, less chicken. In Chicken biriyani, they just mixed some chicken pieces from the same as butter chicken and mixed with some rice. It was not a cooked biriyani. Serving was late, repeatedly had to call to place an order, only two waiters were serving around 30 people. Will change the rating if something improves based on future visit.

First time trying out Madras and we loved it! Husband got the chicken kadai, I got the chicken chettinadu- both were delicious! We also got the chilly naan and the double ka meethu. Everything was really fresh, hot, and full of flavor. The only thing that bummed us out is our waiter must’ve forgot that we ordered dessert and we waited so long we had to take it to go because we had to put our kiddo to bed. From when we ordered dessert to when we actually got it was almost 30 minutes. The dessert was also teeny tiny for the price. Other than that, we were impressed but would have liked to avoid the dessert fiasco.

For a brown mess, it was amazing food and taste. Had the weekend brunch. The price was right on for brunch. Good selection of meat and vegetarian selection. Had the goat, which was very tender.

Yelp
We'd been wanting to check this place out and we finally did on mother's day, so it was a little busier than normal - but not a problem. They offer an impressive line-up of Indian dishes that were constantly being replenished. So many dishes to try, and thankfully unlimited plates to fill. They post their buffet menu daily so you know what's being served and can truly try all their amazing dishes. A favorite of mine was surprisingly a vegetarian dish - paneer matar masala - but learning it's made with cottage cheese made sense - I love cheese! It tasted delicious with both rice and their buttered naan (which was another big favorite of ours,) Ken was a big fan of their nellai chicken kolambu. Service was very nice and quick.

Yelp
I WILL be coming back to Madras. The food was seriously incredible. I couldn't believe the unique options to choose from on this menu and was delighted with every single item we ordered. The dosa was so much bigger than I expected and came with 4 unique and delicious sauces (dips?). The parantha was an incredible layered experience. I even enjoyed the chilly chicken my friend ordered (it had a little spice that resonated on the back end but for someone that doesn't like spicy food I throughly enjoyed it ). As for atmosphere, it was a very tasteful interior. The only downside was the parking lot construction-- we almost left thinking they were closed. THANKFULLY, we checked and were able to sit down because we would have missed out on a new favorite place. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
As a Bangladeshi here in Grand Rapids, I am always on the lookout for South Asian restaurants in town! Madras is a new Indian spot that my parents (the ultimate South Asian food critics) have been raving about since they opened - so I finally had the chance to try it out myself! I was so satisfied by this meal. I thought everything we got was full of flavor, and you can tell that the food is being freshly made. We started out with the Masala Dosa, Gobi Manchurian, and the Chicken Pakoda. Soo good! The dosa had the perfect crispiness, my mouth is watering as I write about it And the spice level was also perfect! For entrees we got paratha with the butter chicken and kadai chicken. Altogether, this was more than enough food for the four of us. The chai and the carrot halwa were also the perfect combination to end the meal. The restaurant is clean and the service was extremely attentive and efficient. I look forward to coming back and trying more from the menu!

Yelp
What a fantastic experience. The food was amazing and the staff attentive. This is a newer restaurant and we hope they grow to become a Grand Rapids staple - we will be back!

Yelp
Definitely will be going again. Had a great time, lots of fantastic flavors and a great price for a buffet

Yelp
My mom and I ate here for the first time. The food is fantastic! The menu is quite large and offers dishes that you traditionally see in a typical Indian restaurant. What I liked were the unique dishes on the menu that I haven't seen before. I had the tea, garlic naan and chicken hakka noodles. My mom had the boneless chicken biryani. The presentation of the food was lovely and everything was so flavorful. They have a lunch buffet Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We're going back tomorrow to try the buffet :). That's how much we loved it.

Yelp
Went here when they first opened. I was lucky to get the lunch buffet for $9.99 and it was amazing. Prices are now at $15.99 but worth every penny. Food is authentic and fresh. Service is kind and I love seeing Indian people eating here also. Shows the quality of the food.

Yelp
I have always been all about Mexican food. But when I visited Madras, Indian Grill. I was hooked on Indian food from the. Hummus and the Pita bread to the chicken Shawarma, I am hooked. I love Indian food!!! Try it...
