Ann Arbor’s Best New Restaurants and Bars, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Located on Broadway Street, this third iteration of Madras Masala has been warmly received for serving high-quality Indian fare like butter chicken, samosas, vindaloo, and curries. The flagship downtown location was destroyed in a 2023 fire but it reopened on Packard Street in early 2024. Now, both restaurants are considered top picks for Indian cuisine in Ann Arbor. Order online through Clover." - Mary Hayes Weier

Wonderful discovery in MI. Delicious food although they could work on a better portion for Biriyani. Kothu parotta was also good. A big thanks to Priscilla who took our order and was great in understanding the needs of our group. They even gave complimentary sweet pongal for our group - delicious 😍 Highly recommended for their service and taste.

Google
We usually order delivery from another Indian place, but decided to do pick up and Madras Masala Express Broadway came up with great ratings. It definitely earned them! 3 entrees, 2 appetizers, & 3 bread orders were ready in 15 mins and were still hot by the time they got home. I can genuinely recommend everything we got. - samosas (2 pieces/order) - samosa chaat (sleeper pick - highly recommend) - paneer tikka masala - chicken tikka masala - lamb saag - garlic naan - aloo pharata There’s also a 10% discount for paying cash and they even gave us two small cake pieces with our order. This place is super great, will order again.

Food was delicious. I got the lamb pasanda with naan bread and keema samosas. Service was ok, atmosphere was definitely a bit weak, nothing on the walls, almost an industrial look 🤨

Google
Their Hakka noodle is so yummy!! I’ve ordered take out a few times, mostly vegetarian entrees, always fresh and nicely prepared. I do think they are doing much better than most of the Indian restaurants in town. Highly recommend!!!

Google
We had such a great dinner here! This just became my favorite Indian joint in Ann Arbor. The curries were amazingly spiced and so delicious and the naan was very fluffy and warm! The owners even gave us a complimentary piece of coffee cake each, which was so kind. It’s a smaller place inside to eat but plenty of space. I’d recommend this location to anyone. Thanks Madras!

Google
This food is like a WARM HUG for the soul! Dipping the garlic naan in the steaming tikka masala gravy is a dream and the reason I come back time after time. In addition to great quality food, the service is top notch and you feel like surrounded by family (sometimes they give complimentary cake). This is my first time in this new location and it is just as amazing as the original. Recommended dishes: - Paneer tikka masala -Garlic Naan -Gobi Manchurian -Chana Masala -Dal Makhani

Google
Have ordered here in the past and it was very good. This time however I found many black bugs in my rice. Google seems to say they’re rice weevils, harmless but gross!

My friend and I ordered Biryani and Varutha curry. The food was delicious and the portions were great. However, I did get a Vindaloo takeout another time and the portion was much smaller. The taste was consistently great!! Most definitely one of my favorite restaurants in town now. On a plus side, Varutha curry tastes just like Burmese (Myanmar) curry so if you are craving for Burmese-like curry, try it out. I wish they keep the portions consistently large.

Yelp
I am so glad they opened up this location closer to the medical campus. Great place to pick up food and have great Indian food. Arguably one of the best Indian restaurants on campus. The staff are very friendly and they recognize frequent customers. Food comes out quick, piping hot, and ready to eat! I love getting the garlic naan and paneer tikka masala.

Yelp
It's our favorite Indian restaurant in Ann Arbor! This location is as good as the Madras Masala location on Packard st., but this location has fewer tables to dine in. We love the saag dishes, dosa, and mango lassi here, but you really can't go wrong!

Yelp
Best of the three Indian-related restaurants (Everest Sherpa, Spice Palace Indian Cuisine) we visited in terms of food quality. This just reopened in October 2024 and the ordering style is counter, with food in styrofoam containers and self-serve paper plates and utencils, even if you eat in, so more of a cafeteria style feel without real service. Still worth the adventure!

Yelp
Beware, their website claims to close at 930, but if you arrive at 927 to pick up your takeout, they will YELL at you. No matter that most restaurants stay open for dine in well past the posted closing time, these guys are looking to abscond and throw out their customers. Food was so so. Not bad. Not amazing.

Yelp
Loved the original location. But not a fan of new current setting on Packard with styrofoam containers and plastic flatware. Food didn't taste as good as at the original. Went once, I suppose I should give it another try now that the new location has been open a while.

Yelp
Generous delicious sauce on the butter chicken. I say this after being disappointed with the Costco version of Butter chicken. My wife loved the lamb Vindaloo. We'll definitely back for more

Yelp
Been getting take out from the original location for a while and was SO excited when this location opened walking distance from my house! Delicious, authentic Indian food. Wonderful owners who are excited to share their culinary culture!

Yelp
Worst experience ever. I brought my American friend to experience Indian food in this place. The guy at the counter was so rude and unfriendly. The hospitality is utterly terrible. The food is ok but the way he treated us is unfair. I was embarrassed in front my friend. Thank you Foods of India for spoiling the name. I do not recommend this place.

Yelp
A steady diet of this will carry me through any heartbreak, any chaos, any quiet despair. I can never live in a place where I can't walk to or have this delivered. What if it closes one day? How will my heart go on? I cannot face that reality without another order.

Yelp
I love this place and find myself frequently recommending it to townies and tourists alike. It's some of the best Indian food the city has to offer. Now here's the part where I tell you how to manage your expectations when you go here. Kitchen of India is not a restaurant. It is a small grocery store that happens to have a kitchen in the back where prepared foods are sold. There's no waitstaff, there's no ambiance, there's no stylistic charm. What you get instead, is one surly Indian man doing his best to keep up with an increasing demand for his product. The food is good, and that's really the only thing that matters at the end of the day. It's reasonably priced and the proportions are good. Go there, be patient, and enjoy.

Yelp
So this place looks run down which is one reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. The food is homemade style and very good. It's more of a carryout place but it does have seating. I'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I am leaving this review as I eat here for the first time. I'm new to town and went out in a limb on ordering my first Indian take out. This food taste like it all came out of the same store bought sauce jar. The chicken manchurian might be the worst thing I've ever eaten. It is supposed to come with chutney but we received a container that was basically empty. If I wasn't starving and my husband hadn't just spent $80 there is no way I would eat this. My search continues for decent Indian in Ann Arbor.

Yelp
A hole in the wall with tasty Indian style food prepared by a guy from Sindh. Not the most sociable guy but a good cook.

Andrew B.

Yelp
Great food run by the nicest guy in Ann Arbor from Pakistan. The place certainly isn't fancy, it's more of a take out place, but have a seat and talk with the workers if you have a chance, they might just open up your eyes to something amazing!
