The atmosphere here is terrible. It’s similar to cafeteria style seating. There is also a loud giant fan that is blowing obnoxious air. Food was good, but not having free chips and salsa is a shame.

My friend recommended we come here for lunch since it was fairly new to DT Summerville. The bar was vibrant, but the dining room seemed a bit dull. We ordered the trio dip and I loved the chunky guacamole. You could tell the chips were house made and they were very crispy and crunchy. I did find that they broke to pieces and crumbled very easily, so while they did taste good I do prefer a more simple tortilla chip that can scoop and dip a bit easier. I got the 2 taco combo plate, and I really enjoyed the rice compared to many rices I’ve had before. These tacos were bigger than expected so you get a good portion of food for lunch. The server was attentive and took good care of us. I would want to come back to try their margaritas!

The restaurant atmosphere felt very welcoming and like a home. The food was amazing and so was the staff. Everything was perfect. Val was my server last time I went, she was very sweet, very helping, and made sure everything was good. She made my day!

Worst mexican restaurant experience ever . Ordered shrimp salad . Soggy salad - soft cucumbers. Tomatoes were not fresh . Top of that their AC WAS broken - Outside temperature was 92F. Attached the browned soggy lettuce pic from the plate. This place requires inspection from the health authorities.

I absolutely love this place. I went to their new location this past weekend and it was amazing. The food, service, and atmosphere was great! My only complaint is that it took awhile to get our check and they had spilt our appetizer without us asking. I had ordered it so i assumed they would put it on my check. Of course, we could have just asked our waiter but the check took so long to arrive the first time that we didn’t really wanna wait for them to fix it. REGARDLESS, the place was great and its a places everyone should try at least once! I would recommend getting their chips, they are insanely good ✨

Google
Not authentic Mexican food. At least in our experience when we order fajitas they come on a hot plate. This one came on a regular plate making the food cool faster. Refried beans were a no thank you. kind people, and service was good.

Google
I can’t say enough good things about Madres! The food is fresh and flavorful. Every dish came out perfectly seasoned and hot. But what really made the experience stand out was our waiter, Andrew. He was attentive without being overbearing, super knowledgeable about the menu, and gave us great recommendations that we never would’ve tried on our own (and now they’re our favorites!). We’ll definitely be back again soon!

Jessica N.

Google
Drew was absolutely fantastic! From the moment we sat down, he made us feel welcome and taken care of. He was friendly without being overbearing, knew the menu inside and out, and gave great recommendations. Drinks were always refilled before we had to ask, and the food came out just right. It’s rare to find someone who’s genuinely attentive and clearly enjoys what they do—Drew definitely does. We’ll be asking for him next time we come in!

Yelp
I'd eaten at the former location previously but this was my first at the new location. Walked in and were greeted by the owner who is fantastic. I ordered carnitas tacos. Mild salsa was overly salted and I couldn't eat it. Tomatillo sauce was great. Rice, beans were great. Carnitas were good. Service was less than good. The place wasn't crowded and it was a chore to get refills of water. Glasses of water which were half the size you'd expect at a restaurant. Prices were a bit too steep for what you get. Two tacos, rice and beans for $14? Plus $3 for chips and salsa. Normally you order tacos and get 3. Food is good, don't get me wrong, but their prices are too high.

Yelp
You can find better Mexican food in Summerville. The nice part about this restaurant is that it's in downtown Summerville so very walkable after a Third Thursday or other Summerville activity. The menu is pretty small and limited and it really isn't authentic Mexican food. It's more modern Mexican. This restaurant is more for convenience than then good food. The service was slow when we visited even though it wasn't very crowded.

Yelp
Great location, however food was bland, typical southern Mexican/central American menu. I think it's overpriced especially since the food was not anything special. The whole dish was very bland , salsa was not that good, guacamole was not worth it.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Great spot that we stumbled upon and decided to check out as we were walking around downtown for Third Thursday. The inside bar area was very photo worthy! The outdoor seating was spacious. Highly recommend sitting outdoors on a nice cool fall afternoon/evening. Drinks and food were very delicious and at such a great price. The staff were very friendly and attentive in checking in.

Yelp
I loved Madre's when it was located on Bacon's Bridge & was sad one day when I went there only to find a sign that said it was closed. As I continued to drive past I saw their sign got removed & then another restaurant was coming soon. But one day while at Montreux I looked over & noticed the once empty bldg now said Madre's! I shared the pulled chicken nachos with my boyfriend which were but I wish there were more chips. We ran out of chips before the toppings were gone. But it was really good!! I got the skinny marg & my boyfriend got the house marg. I'm loving the outdoor space and dj they seem to have on the weekends (unsure about week days). I hope Madre's is a Summerville staple that passes the test of time because the food is still good & service still remains as good as ever!

Yelp
Walked in on a beautiful day and was able to snag a table on the patio. Greated quickly with water and we ordered margs. Service was quick and friendly and they were helping eachother clean tables which I love to see. Drives me insane when someone enters in empty handed. We ordered nachos but wanted to try their chips and salsa with the hottest salsa they offered. It did not disappoint. The nachos were some of the best nachos I've had in awhile. We had a great experience and also enjoyed the people watching!

Yelp
While the service we received was good, we did not enjoy the food. Party of 3, no one enjoyed it. We spoke to a table beside us, after noticing they weren't eating theirs, they said the same. I ordered a Paloma, it did not taste like a Paloma, sent it back and didn't ask for a replacement. The margaritas weren't good as well. All in all, we more than likely won't return, but we do wish them the best!

Yelp
Truly awful experience. Walked in early for a reservation and was told we could be seated. Great - told us to follow someone. That person never acknowledged us and we were confused on who exactly we were to follow. Okay fine. No big deal. We sit, for no joke, 15 minutes before a asking a server if someone could help us. She said she was so sorry and would send someone over. A few minutes pass and a couple was seated behind us, and a waitress immediately greeted them to take their order! Unreal. We ended up walking out. Also. Who charges $2.99 for chips and salsa?! I'm sorry, tacky. Just increase your prices by 50cents. The signage when you walk in specifically states "don't forget to ask for your chips and salsa- $2.99" come on. Really? Granted who can't afford $3 for chips. Clearly we all can, it's principle.

Yelp
New location for Madre's. Perfect location in old Summerville. We stopped in before attending Flowertown Theater. Easy parking in the parking garage. They were able to seat us immediately inside. They also have a large outdoor seating area. The inside is newly remodeled with beautiful tile floors and comfortable seating. Everything was so new and clean. I ordered chicken taco platter that comes with rice and beans. Chicken was shredded with flavorful soft corn tortillas. A bit too much onion for me but otherwise delicious. I was able to remove part of the onion to my taste. Looks like they have a full bar, too. Great addition to downtown Summerville!

Yelp
Great place for a snack and drink. Waiter was great. I think they had just cleaned the floors when we walked in because there was overpowering smell of cleaning chemicals but that was my only complaint.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Seated right away and service was fast on a Saturday afternoon! We were given chips and salsa first thing and the chips were so crispy and delicious! I got the mole chicken tacos with rice and beans! It definitely tasted like they make their own mole. It was so good! The margarita was ok, didn't taste much tequila in it. If you're looking for a quick bite that will fill you up, check them out!

Jim K.

Yelp
Great location. But the food was not super inspired. Plain white rice, unseasoned beans, and two small tacos with a couple shrimp each. This is not really a Mexican restaurant. More of a local spot that just advertises Mexican inspired dishes.

Yelp
Love it! Only place in town that knows what a chili relleno is! Service is friendly and great walking location Downtown

Renee R.

Yelp
From the food to our wonderful server, Bella, we had such an amazing experience. We have really high expectations when it comes to Mexican food being from the West Coast and knowing what real Mexican food taste like. Madres does not disappoint. This is officially our spot! Huge shout out to Bella, our waitress who went above and beyond. Great service!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Have eaten here twice, good authentic Mexican dishes. Kind of a pain to get out of the parking lot during high traffic times. However the food is good, and tastes good. Service has always been good.

Laura L.

Yelp
What a great ambiance and service! Shoutout to Drew for making us feel welcome. Such a cute aesthetic place!

Audrey N.

Yelp
The food is very good here, but having to pay extra for salsa is a bit annoying,as without the salsa the food is dry. better quality control here than other places (tiki taco, moes) who gave people food poisoning in my family

Paul J.

Yelp
Great service. Very good fresh guacamole. Drinks (margaritas) were ok. Entries, fajitas were very good. Nice laid back go to place on a Saturday night

Yelp
Just nassssssssty!!! Had tacos here and they were ok so ordered again steak fajitas. The meat tasted like tough dog food!! Just limp greasy vegetables and the horchata is literally water!! I literally took one piece of meat out and sent back the entire plate. Worst experience ever then the manager has the nerve to say this is her only time refunding money! Please this is my last time going!! And if it wasn't if the food is ish i will get every last penny back!!!

Yelp
Before the details: we are a married lesbian couple and overall got the impression we were not welcome. This is the first Mexican place Ive ever visited across the USA that charges for chips and salsa... you have to ask for them as they are not even offered. Hostess was a bit blank when I asked about that, I had to get up to ask her after waiting 5 minutes. A waiter was taking the order of another table (the only other customers besides us) and was kind of shouting at them, gave us bad vibes right away. After 10 minutes our order was taken and food came out quickly enough but again we are used to munching on chips and salsa which weren't even offered. My spouse ordered a burrito and it didnt match the menu, so we asked for queso on it and we were charged extra for that too. Waiter was short about it and all too Weird. My Madres Bowl was good but my spouse just couldn't eat after the weird vibe. So the most negative part is the lack of hospitality, stupid up charges, and stares from the back kitchen peeking out as us which indicated that we were being singled out. When you're gay you know the feeling and the vibe and we are just not coming back.

Yelp
There are holes in the wall that really make an impact, this one is ok but they really need to make a big effort for me to give 4 stars or even three Chips are not from corn, they look and taste like flour tortilla fries. The sauce that came with chips was watery and didn't have much flavor The entrée didn't impress me either, I ordered a Madre bowl and the first bite was ok due to the queso but the rest were disappointing, specially because I can see only about 4oz of chicken and very little beans with not much flavor either and to top it all off jalapenos from a can, seriously? has your cook been to Mexico? I get it you are trying to maximize your profit but give me quality and I will pay the price. Even if you were to drop the price of this from 12 to 7 you won't get me back. Sorry I am not sure what audience you are trying to please. Reviews are all over the place but I don't quite understand the fives, I just don't see what it takes to get back once a month or even every six months. Hot sauce in a bottle, I can buy that a food lion too

Yelp
We tried the new location off Hutchinson Square for an early dinner and it was great! Beautifully decorated and a fun ambiance. Hostess was welcoming and service was perfect. We had grilled chicken nachos, Guacamole, margaritas, and tacos - steak and chicken. Everything was fresh and delicious. It was a Saturday night and they had live music set up outside. We are already talking about going back for dinner, or just to grab a drink!

Shannon B.

Yelp
Great location, Great service, but the food was just missing the Pop. Kinda blan. So flavor and I feel it should have more to catch my taste buds. We had chips and Salsa. I had the Buritto (carnitas) and the wife had a salad.

A B.

Yelp
We ate at their new location on Central Ave in Downtown Summerville and it was so good. I was initially worried about their small menu, but it turned out to be well worth having a smaller menu and delicious food. I would 100% go back just to have their housemade chips and queso! My sister also said their jalapeño margarita was one of the best she has had! Special thanks to our waitress Izzy for being so patient with our talkative son too. She was absolutely fabulous!!

Merrin R.

Yelp
The food served here is not Mexican. As a native of Mexico, I consider this place disgusting. The green slim salsa had no flavor---the pico was wilted...my server took off after delivering the crappy chips and so called salsa....it 20 min before I called for the check after watching my server shove pizza down her throat when she shoud have been serving customers...Although I reported the food as terrible to serveral employess ...they had the nerve to chg me for the appetizers....you are in Summerville SC...dont try and tell me that was Mexican-Guanajuatan food...I travel the Americas and Mexico for my company and know Mexican food...the food was crap and service was the same...should have read the crappy reviews first..husband and I went across the street for a fantastic late lunch...STAY clear of this dump!

Robert P.

Yelp
Cool little Mexican cantina. The staff is super friendly and the restaurant is decorated with a fresh vibe. Lots of flowers. Perfection on the tea guys! Perfection! I was gonna say waiting on the food but it's already here. Really fast service!! The enchiladas were awesome and the kids seemed to enjoy their kids meals by the emptiness I can see from here. Desert was churros and ice cream. Glad we got that.

Debra K.

Yelp
Lunch for first time! Best Guacamole I have ever had! And the so called appetizer shrimp quesadilla was enough for 2 people and was wonderful too!

B L.

Yelp
We came to Madre's for dinner and were definitely disappointed with the food and service. The food had no seasoning and did not arrive hot. The server was absent for most of our visit so we felt like an after thought. I do not plan on returning. Highly disappointed

Yelp
My favorite place for quality Mexican food. I like the tacos but truly anything from here is great!

Yelp
Authentic Mexican. A go-to for our family when needing a quick takeout option during the week. Friendly service and a large menu!

Yelp
First off I don't understand all of these great reviews on yelp? I went here for lunch today with a friend because it has such high reviews. This place is located in a strip mall, kind of in an odd location but no fault of its own. It's pretty small inside. We came in and were seated right away. The waitress was really friendly. We started off with the chips and salsa. The chips were really good, they were thin and crispy and tasted like they were homemade. We both ordered tacos. One order of chicken and the other ones were pork. We both agreed the tacos were bland. Seemed odd the pork ones had cucumber? The chicken tacos just had what appeared to be a little bit of Pico de gallo. The tacos could've used cheese, sour cream, lime juice or really anything to give them some flavor. Now for the sides. I had rice and beans on the side with my tacos . The rice and beans were good, but it was white rice with corn and carrots. I have literally never seen this combination in rice at a Mexican restaurant ever!! I have to admit it looks pretty bizarre but it didn't taste horrible . Even more bizarre, my friend ordered the side of vegetables with hers. The vegetables that came with her meal looked straight out of a hibachi restaurant. Zucchini, carrots and potatoes? When I think of Mexican vegetables the first thing that comes to mind is maybe Mexican street corn, that would make sense. The pile of vegetables that were on her plate made absolutely zero sense. I almost for a minute forgot I was at a Mexican restaurant and thought we had decided on hibachi for lunch. Overall I'm extremely disappointed because we don't have any decent restaurants in this town and I was hoping this place could become a local favorite spot. I've come to the conclusion either I ordered the wrong thing and people love this place or all of these reviews are fake. To the people who give this place rave reviews, what are you ordering or have you never had good Mexican food?

Frederick B.

Yelp
Meh...... Ordered steak fajita which was cold and skimpy. Who the hell sends a cold platter fajita to a table? Steak was tough and unflavored. Ordered a Dos Equis which was warm. Won't be back sorry!

Yelp
I would give this place honestly 3.5 stars. I'm not from Charleston. I'm from San Francisco area and we are stationed in Charleston. We haven't had any good Mexican food since coming out here. I think this is a really good small hole in the wall restaurant, their is definitely things that I love liked the service, it seemed like a family owned business which I'm always looking to support and staff was extremely friendly the last two times I've been in there with my family. They were really sweet with my toddler, and the decorations are typical of most small Mexican restaurants. Service was fast for food, it was pretty tasty and for the price in this area it was worth it. Here's where I would make some changes: The salsa that comes with the chips, that definitely seem house made personally can't tell if they are corn or flour but they are pretty good, that salsa is extremely flavorless. I would recommend their spiciest salsa but there is still no flavor it's just spice. Not the worst thing. I also think they need to work on their rice. They serve most things with plain white rice not Spanish rice or brown rice that I feel most typical Mexican restaurants that I'm used to will use. But it was cooked well, and I still enjoyed it. They also really didn't have beans with anything. Which I'm definitely surprised about. The horchata was typical, could use so much cinnamon but it was overall good. I will continue to eat there as I feel like for this area of the country this place is good for the price.

Yelp
I'm so glad I didn't consider the few poor reviews here. This place is delicious!! Authentic, fresh with amazing flavors!! My wife is from Chihuahua Mexico and was just smiling from ear to ear. So good and a must try!!! Delicioso!!

Yelp
My Steak Burrito Bowl was tasty and a fair-for-value serving. My complaint is that we were charged for a second 2 oz. cup of their salsa. My wife order a side of guacamole for her Chicken Burrito Bowl $4 for the same size 2 oz. cup as the salsa. The guacamole was 80% tomatoes, I expect guacamole to be mostly avocado not tomatoes. Service was fair to poor. We most likely will put this restaurant near the bottom of our revisit list.

Yelp
Surprisingly good - cute little very casual restaurant. Good for a quick lunch . Only downfall is you have to pay for chips and salsa... but I got the trip if chips salsa and queso and guacamole .. it's good! Got the chicken quesadilla - shredded chicken inside was delicious! We will return

Yelp
Absolutely authentic. I highly recommend this restaurant to everybody who is looking to get their Mexican craving on. The owners were very welcoming as their food felt like home.

Yelp
This restaurant has apparently relocated to downtown Summerville. We went for lunch my husband, I , and my daughter. Our expectations were high. We just relocated from San Diego and we have had some of the best Mexican food. .This establishment has a lot of potential with a few glitches. We ordered the trio of salsa, guacamole, and queso. Very good except flour tortillas are far below corn as chips. I don't want a pita chip. Fajitas were good, chicken was tender but they are using yellow peppers instead of green bell peppers which equals bland taste. And where is the pico de gallo? Mounds of lettuce with a smig of tomato doesn't excite me.Last, the rice, if I wanted white rice ,I would go to a Chinese restaurant. They need to get somebody in there that can do Mexican rice. Major let down. I can give you an authentic recipe if you want. Super easy. Except for this, our lunch was actually very enjoyable and staff were exceptional. I hope they listen to their customers. This restaurant could be a go to place.

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
Second time here. It's a small, family owned place. We ate in the restaurant but it looks like they do a decent take out business.. Both times the food was fresh & tasty. I ordered shrimp tacos with mango & shredded red cabbage. My brother got the chicken Madres bowl, which was large, with good flavors. There is a full bar (they even have Mezcal!) The service was warm & efficient. We will return.
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
Small restaurant yet family owned and authentic Mexican cuisine. We ordered the madre steak salad which was good but bland, it needed a bit more salt. We also had chicken nachos and that was great. The one thing that threw me off is that you do not get chips and salsa unless you order food, anything. They were fast to serve us and made sure we were well taken care of through our meal and after. The atmosphere is inviting and very home like. There was only one server and one cook, so it's a sit yourself restaurant. All in all the pricing was fair for the portion of lunch we got. The only thing that needs improvement is the sitting area and a bit more attention to detail when it comes to the ordering of the food as we had asked for some items to be removed due to some allergies and they weren't therefore we did it ourselves. Just pay a bit more attention next time.
google avatar

Yelp
WORST MEXICAN FOOD!! I have no idea how this restaurant has so many good reviews. I ordered Enchiladas, shrimp, steak, barbacoa, chicken, carnitas, and chorizo tacos. The chicken was completely dry with zero flavor. The steak had the texture of an eraser. The only half way decent thing was the chorizo. If you want good mexican food, go somewhere else. Even Taco Bell or Chipotle beat this place for sure. Zero stars if I could. Don't waste your money here.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Great local restaurant. Best salsa, guacamole, and chips in town. Always fresh and homemade. They even cut and fry their own tortilla chips. No Speedy Gonzales lunch #1 on this menu. Everything is authentic and made to order.

Yelp
Dinner on Saturday night impressed! Tres Amigos- appetizer guac, salsa, and cheese dip. Chips were crispy, could have used a little bigger portion of trio...came small portions. Carne Asada and Carnita with rice came with rice and beans. Flavor of the meat is very important to me. It was fresh, and well seasoned. Had the cilantro, onions, and cucumbers on top, and corn tortillas. I used the salsa from the appetizer, and not sure (didn't see any) if they had little bottles of hot sauce but it could have used a little extra on top to finish the tacos. Beans could have had more flavor, and rice was very good. My little girls ate every last bite of chicken and cheese quesadilla with the rice. So I can say the kids meal was great! My husband had enchiladas. So delicious!!!! It was covered in a green mole sauce which the flavor was excellent! Totally guessing the flavor came from Hoja Santa leaves, it reminded me of anise flavor. The menu is limited and there are only 5 tables plus 4 bar seats. Very very small place. The service was perfect, food came quick, and refills speedy. I aways eyeball what everyone else is eating, and I did not see a bad looking plate and everyone ate all their food. Definitely on my list of places to come back. My only suggestion is adding more tables for seating.

Yelp
Very tasty Mexican food !! Very clean rest. and service is great !! Kind of small ,but I get mine to go. Try it they are good .

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in the LowCountry then this is your place. It is located in a busy section of Summerville next to a pizza shop. There is a parking lot but with very little parking spots. Upon walking in, we were shocked at how small the dining area was. There were a total of 5 tables and a small bar area. They have limited menu items as well as a limited number of items for kids. The adult portions are decent whereas the kids items were very small unless you are a huge fan of fries. The kids meals come with waffle fries and are a big sized. I don't think that you can go wrong with anything that you order here as the 3 items that we ordered were all delicious. The reason behind the 4 star is due to the service. The waitress was very slow in all aspects. It took us awhile to get our drinks, our chips and salsa as well as refills for our drinks. Despite the service, we would go here again
google avatar

Dean L.

Yelp
Solid authentic taste thankfully not that Americanized. They don't have tripas or Lengua but what they do have is flavored well and the Madre sauce on the side will give you the kick you're looking for.
google avatar

Jodie C.

Yelp
We finally found a fresh Mexican restaurant for home cooked food. I love that they use their mother's own recipes. The food is delicious and it is flavorable, interesting, and has some unique items. It's so nice to patronize a small family business especially since the mainstream mexican are pretty much all the same. This is a wonderful change.

Yelp
Small place you could drive by and miss. Interior is typical of that you find in most Mexican restaurants. Service was a bit slow, but good. Food was mediocre, nothing to write home about...we even hit Taco Bell on the way home
