This Under-the-Radar U.S. Region Has Surfing, Ancient Redwoods, Mountains, and a Rustic Charm | Vogue

"In a sunny strip of Santa Cruz, beside an organic grocer and a few breweries, winemaker Cole Thomas is producing some of the region’s most serious and cerebral Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in an urban winery. The California energy is apparent—a chalkboard in the tasting room advertises both surfboard swaps and sips of Chardonnay. Instead of owning vineyards, Thomas cherry picks fruit from the best of the region, including Ascona Vineyard at the summit of the mountain and Peter Martin Reyes, one of the most prestigious vineyards in the region. The result: cool, distinctly California wines—laid-back but intentional, French-inspired but full of sunshine." - Kate Dingwall

Wonderful afternoon at Madson Wines. Great little spot to sit and chill over a tasting and glass of wine. All the wines we tasted were great and the service and attention we received from Charlotte and Ali made us feel right at home. Made sure to stay on top of our needs even as the place filled completely up. Extra points for the oysters from Parker Picks pop-up oyster bar. Would give six stars if I could. Definitely will be back.

Been in the wine club for a few years, adore their cab, gamay, and syrahs. Ali, the lady running the tasting room, is a joy. Thank you for the hospitality!

We enjoyed a great and spontaneous tasting experience late this afternoon. We were headed to another tasting venue and decided to stop in and explore what Madson had to offer. We were promptly greeted by a friendly server, who, during our tasting was gracious and allowed us to customize our tasting experience. She was knowledgeable about the wines and freely shared her knowledge of the winery’s history. The experience was positive and the wine was delicious. We inquired about their wine club and can now look forward to having new releases sent to us. I highly recommend Madson!

Wonderful atmosphere and wine. Loved having a glass of red there the other night and taking home a white to enjoy with a friend with a light spring meal. Great people and wine, it’s a great stopping spot!

We love the selection of the wines and the atmosphere is simply awesome. Personable service and great wines. Bought 2 bottles each of the Gamay (which is wonderful ) and the skin contact wine. We will be back!

Excellent wine and a really warm and inviting space! Wasn’t planning on joining the wine club, but the three bottle option is low commitment, and everything we tasted was delicious. Looking forward to making this a regular stop when we are on the West Side.

Epic natural wines, great vibes, staff is super knowledgable and passionate about cultivating Santa Cruz local organic grapes and using unique winemaking techniques to craft exceptional natural wines. Location is ideal for tasting and trying other local brews and food.

Yelp
Madson tasting was a lovely experience. We used groupon & it was very reasonable considering a 5 flight tasting plus 2 extra ones. Our host was friendly & gave us a tour & some history. We also got a bottle for our enjoyment.

Yelp
My bf and I heard about Madson Winery through social media. They were having an event with a pizza company and it was very well attended. Their indoor space was relatively small, and they don't have space to be outside with your wine. We didn't stay long as it was crowded and tough to order from the bar. I traditionally go with Pinot Noirs, but I truly enjoyed their Cab, great flavor, but not overwhelming. I would definitely return.

Yelp
We returned with a friend for yet another fabulous tasting experience. The energy of our tasting lead was spot on and helped enhance the tasting experience. If I am ever in the area again, I'll be back. Until then, I'll be looking forward to having a Madson wine shipment arrive at my home.
