Best Restaurants in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"This Medical Center restaurant isn’t much to look at — the booths are drab, the tables are scratched, and the lighting is out of the Backrooms (for those of y’all familiar with the 4chan thread). But this strip mall mini-chain brings Southern Indian fare (at a shockingly inexpensive price) to the city, where Northern Indian food is generally more widely available. Lunchtime provides the biggest bargain with four choices of thali. Each banana leaf-lined offering includes an assortment of the restaurant’s most assertive tastes, all surrounding a heaping bowl of white rice. Although thalis are available for delivery, the biryanis and Madras curries travel particularly well." - Brandon Watson

We recently visited this restaurant for the very first time, and it easily became one of the best Tamil dining experiences we’ve had in the Dallas area. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the warm ambiance and clean, welcoming environment. As for the food—it was absolutely outstanding! We tried three different chicken appetizers, the Thalappakatti Mutton Biryani, a non-veg thali, and ended our meal with parotta and mutton curry. The parotta was puffy and soft—one of the best we’ve had in Dallas. The ambiance and service were excellent, and the owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Overall, a fantastic experience—we’ll definitely be coming back!

We tried this South Indian spot for the first time and were genuinely impressed. The food quality and quantity were both excellent. We ordered the mini tiffin combo, chicken tikka kebab, the day’s special chicken lollipop and ended with their signature filter coffee—all delicious. The staff was friendly and accommodating; they happily brought extra chutney and sambhar when requested. The chutneys could be improved a bit, which would take the experience to the next level. Restrooms are a bit old-fashioned but clean. Do try this place—it’s actually one of the best around and you won’t regret it. When you visit, you’ll find yourself wondering why you didn’t try it sooner. They do charge $2 extra for a few items over the weekend, but it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re looking to save a few bucks, consider going on weekdays instead.

The best biryani’s we had in Dallas so far! They don’t rip you off like other Indian restaurants where they charge you 22$ for thali, the taste and the quantity was perfect, we had biryani combo and it’s perfect for two normal appetite adults, our only concern was there was too much oil for our comfort but it’s fine if you have it once in a while.

Dirty tables, floors. Few Forks given are bended. Ordered dry chicken Manjurian and server said , try madras chicken similar , well it didnt taste good. Just color. Horrible test. Not sure why she recommended it. Ordered Egg kothu parotta, horrible food. Just dry, no flavor, felt like eating chopped slightly gravy mixed parotta . I would give 1 out of 10. mixed egg with premixed parotta and served us. Server asked how is the food. I said its very bad and no gravy mixed in parotta, and she smiled and said oh ok . She not even bothered to say sorry Not coming back again.

Today we had Indian food at Madurai Mess in Dallas. Infact this is 5th time we are visiting this place in 2 months. The best Tamil food we can get in Dallas We tried Veechu parotta, Ambur mutton Biryani and other dishes. All were excellent and it was authentic south Indian cuisine. The rates are very reasonable and service is awesome. I highly recommended this restaurant for someone looking for Indian food in Dallas.

I tried Non- Veg Thali. It is so good all varieties of non veg curries , followed by some veg curry, kutu, poriyal, chapathi. Most recommended drink is JIGARTHANDA. Have it after food they its a fullfil meal.

Google
We went to this restaurant to have a good Madurai style food. Ordered a Parotta and was shocked to see that it is just some frozen Parotta that was heated up. I could literally feel the artificial taste and the rubbery texture. When asked the staff they said it was freshly made, but come on! don’t we know the difference?

Google
Madurai Mes in Plano, Texas, is a fantastic spot for anyone craving authentic Indian food! The ambiance is really cool with plenty of seating, and the spacious setup makes it a comfortable place to dine. The service was incredibly humble and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. They offer a variety of South and North Indian special dishes, all cooked to perfection. The food was not only delicious but also served in generous portions—definitely worth it! Highly recommend for anyone wanting a great meal with warm hospitality!

Yelp
We found this place close to Frisco and wanted to visit this for a quick bite. This place offers multiple different food items from Chennai or Tamil Nadu. This place is not packed. It has a lot of space and the staff is super friendly. They made sure that Weaver assisted very soon and the food was coming very fast. I did find the food to be a little spicy, but I think it's delicious for Indian crowd the ambience of this place is very neat and clean. They make sure that the tables are perfectly set for guest to start enjoying their meal.

Yelp
Excellent service and delicious food. Paratha and dosa are made very well. Curry Chicken was my favorite. The dipping sauces made the experience more enjoyable. My favorite was the tomato, onion, and tamarind. Madras Chilli Califlower is an excellent choice as well.

Yelp
Go here for authentic South Indian food ! We've become a regular! Weekend Thali is very nice, variety of items in a single dish. Attention Seafood Lovers; they just added Seafood Platter ! Try it before it's gone ! It's not on the Menu, offered temporarily as a Special, a whole pomfret grilled, a big slice of fried Sear fish, Shrimp 65 , enough to feed two with a bowl of rice

Anita S.

Yelp
Not so sure about giving them higher stars.. service is very slow, nobody gets their meals at the same time. The host either doesn't have most of the items on the menu or doesn't know much about the items on the menu. I guess proper communication is lacking. I'd give customer service a 2. Ambience is a 1. Food once it gets there is reasonable in taste thank you chef!

Yelp
Items ordered. Chicken Biryani Combo. Chicken soup. Shezwan fried rice. Gobi manchuriyan. Every single item was spicy. We asked for mild but they were all spicy. If you are a young Indian and just arrived to USA this probably is not an issue. But if you have been living here for a while or if you are a non Indian, or if you have kids born here the default spice levels at this place are definitely not for you. Some of us enjoyed the ambur biryani. It was delicious. The chicken soup was so spicy. Even for grown ups. None of our kids didn't touch a single item after tasting them. Had to go get some chinese after coming home. Anyways.. moving on. Staff is friendly and the service was good. Restrooms could use some maintainance. Dining area and lighting is very good. Reminded me of old school movie theaters back in India. Has some uniqueness to it. End of the day food is definitely authentic. A bit way too authentic may be. Lol.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch for Monday afternoon! We wanted to try their lunch thali. As soon as we stepped in, we could smell the off putting cleaning supplies smell which was very strong smell. We still decided to sit and order. Ordered Non Veg thali and Veg thali. Both came with free refills on everything except chapathi. Appetizer and curries tasted very good! We did get refill in some of the items. It is worth the price, but the smell is the only reason for removing 3 stars. Otherwise worth the price

Yelp
Food was amazing, although it took a while to come out it was very fresh and delicious. Chilli chicken was awesome and the Tikka Masala was one of the best although next time I'm eager to try the Kothu Parotta. One of the best Indian restaurants in Plano/Frisco

Yelp
I was visiting this spot for the first time, and I m glad to find another good option to have good south Indian food in this area. I went for lunch today and tried lunch thali; I would say it was an authentic lunch. I ordered their veg thali and non-veg thali. Each thali has a roti, papad, and sweet. Veg thali served with two different curries, vegetable rice, paneer butter masala, sambar, and rasa,m with two other fries curries. Nonveg thali served with chicken curry, mutton curry, chicken fry, mutton sag, and fish curry. I would say no to the vegetarian thali, as all the items are not flavor full or delicious. I only liked the panner butter masala and rasam with their one fry curry. Nonveg thali all things are good in taste and was flavor-packed. The spice level was mild. The atmosphere and ambiance were good. The staff was helpful and attentive. Service was quick. If you are planning to have non-vegetarian food, then this place is suitable for you. Vegetarians, You would be disappointed.

Yelp
T To start with their service is grossly incompetent & food was inedible!!! We ordered couple of soups and Naatu Kozhi Varuval (country chicken fry) as appetizers and ordered parota and chicken salan and chicken fried rice for the main course. Soups were good. In the menu it was saying "all the soups served with crunchy fried noodles" . I asked the guy who served us soups that we were missing the fried noodles on the side, he spaced out for few seconds and told me that they were out of fried noodles, when I noticed just then his colleague bringing noodles to another customer. It's fried noodles!! You fry noodles ands serve them along with some soups. Not that you buy them fried from the store!!! It's just so stupid of the guy to say we are out of noodles today but can serve a dish with noodles. He was super lazy!! I called other guy who took our order and asked for the missing fried noodles and he said he would check on it and never showed up!!! Our soups were getting cold so we ate them without fried noodles. Secondly the Naatu Kozhi Varuval was a regular chicken that was tossed with different type of spices and salt absolutely was inedible and had no flavor besides being spicy and salty. I have a high tolerance to spiciness but this was not fit to eat. Supposedly Naatu Kozhi Varuval should be dry but this was semi wet. You are using the word naatu kozhi and serving them regular chicken. It's like the menu saying we serve salmon and when ordered you receiving anchovy !!! Deceiving the customer. Parota and salan was fine. Fried rice again missing salt and had no flavor. We had to take it home to make it atleast palatable!!! The staff is definitely spaced out, you find them receiving guests and showing to the tables and taking orders and go missing. They do not check on the guests if they need anything. But you find them walking all over the place spaced out like zombies not paying attention to the guest. The guy with messy hair, girl with glasses and another guy with little beard serving food are the ones that need proper restaurant etiquette. (They were on your Saturday night shift) We had a disappointing dinner with spaced out incompetent staff and awful food!!! Never going back again or recommending it!!!

Our go to order here is the mutton biryani and madras chilli chicken - never disappoints and a must try. Very quick service.

Yelp
I really enjoyed a few dishes here! Ambience and Service: The restaurant is kept need and servers are ready to help even had a busy time. Food: i loved the ambur and thalapakattu biryani the most out of all biryanis. Kotthu paratha is gooe. Pepper chicken appetizer was really good. I did not like the chicken 65 and paya soup as they lacked flavor. The meat thali was good too!

Yelp
Great place for authentic South Indian food. Had Biryani Combo.. Amazing!! Jigar Thanda a must try..

Yelp
It is my first time here. We were greeted the moment we came in. We arrived closed to when they open for lunch on Saturday, and people trickled in after us pretty quickly. This is my first time having Indian filter coffee, and it was amazing! I've only had thali one other time in my life, and this is a great comparison to what I remembered. I ordered the non-veg thali, and it was phenomenal. Come with an appetite because it is a lot of food. For my partner, this is his first time having thali, and he was impressed. He is already making plans to bring his friends and family here. This is a great restaurant with a chandelier and wall art. The owner also took the time to check on tables and see how everyone is doing. A few years ago, it was almost impossible to find anyone that offered Thali in DFW. This is a great surprise, and I cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
Stopped in our way to Waco. We really wanted to have some thali and this seemed to be a new spot. They've actually only been open 7 months and have another location in San Antonio. We ordered two non-veg thali. There's a South Indian vs Bombay option. The differences are some of the sides and the heat level. South is more spicy. Our thali came with fish curry, chicken curry, butter chicken, mutton curry, rasam, sambar, paysum, fried rice, plain rice, channa salad, some chili chicken, a chapathi and papadam. The food was all good but I wish there were some more veg sides. We also had poori with channa. Really large poori and you get two. Lastly, we tried the kothu parotta with chicken. Tasty dish with some raita on the side. Large portions for all the food. Washed it down with some nice, sweet, thick mango lassi and a filter coffee. Service was quick and pleasant. The place got packed quickly. The decor is simple and the restaurant was clean. Funny thing to note- if you feel like you're eating fast and the food is getting caught in your chest, pay attention to the music. The music tempo in the background was so fast that we didn't realize how it influenced how quickly we ate. Works well for the restaurant to get people in and out fast but it's tough to relax and enjoy when you feel like you're in a race.

Yelp
I usually don't write restaurant reviews but I had to because this restaurant was absolutely unforgettable! My family is from California but while visiting the Plano area we came across this restaurant and decided to give it a try (we loved the food so much that we ended up going back a second time a couple of days later). The first time we visited I ordered the Bombay non-veg thali and it was absolutely delicious. All the side dishes had perfect flavor and I especially loved the seasoning on the fried chicken which was perfectly crispy. I also ordered the chicken pepper fry which was spicy but incredibly flavorful. The second time we visited we ordered the Bhai Kadai Mutton Biriyani and the Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biriyani. The Mutton Biriyani had a delicious burst of flavor and tender meat while the Chicken Dum Biriyani and a delightful fragrance. The staff were also friendly and accommodating, the owner even kindly gave us a keychain after we mentioned that it was our first time visiting. If I were to visit Plano again I would definitely not hesitate to come back to this restaurant. Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this restaurant!

Yelp
We were a big group, yet the service was excellent. We tried multiple items on the menu. The pongal was delicious and the kids loved the fried noodles with chicken. Fish fry, biryani, parota, chicken 65, lollipop chicken, etc. were great. The only feedback would to be have a kids menu. I highly recommend them.

Yelp
Worst place to go. It never opened Wherever I visited, it was closed. The owner didn't even regret or apologized.
google avatar

Maggie K.

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday night for dinner. Been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally we got here. The menu has a bunch of different options for all, we ordered 2 portions of kal dosas for the kids and also got noodles for my husband and I. The kal dosas came with four different dipping chutneys and a small bowl of sambar. The food tasted saltless and the dosa was not as expected it wasn't cooked fully! Again the noodles tasted saltless, the portion size was huge though. The service was inattentive and slow. Nothing fancy about the ambiance here. I might give it another try for their lunch specials and to try non veg!
google avatar

Chinu M.

Yelp
The food is delicious, love the indo chinese soups, the service could be better sometimes the main course arrives before the appetizers but the taste makes up for it
google avatar

Miette T.

Yelp
Extremely slow service with mediocre food. I've had a lot of good curry in my life and this it didn't occur at this establishment. I'm really disappointed with how many people were at this establishment when it was so mediocre. We had the tikka masala which lacked strong spices and flavor. The Kafta was mushy and really bad. The only decent was the butter naan and garlic naan.
google avatar

Jahangir A.

Yelp
Very nice management Mr Subba is excellent Very accommodating , nice Food freshly prepared And Good service . I will definitely go again Also the restaurant is very clean Thank you.

Yelp
I love their mutton thalapakatti biryani that's the star. We had some indo Chinese dishes they all tasted flavorful. What I really like here is the ambiance and hospitality of its owner subramanyam he always welcomes us with a smiling face and he cares about customer satisfaction. I bought all my friends and family who visit Dallas here to try thalapakatti biryani. I also love how they serve on banana leaf like in India.

Prasanth M.

Yelp
We went there for lunch. We were quickly seated. The server was polite . We ordered chicken soup as appetizer , followed by non veg thali and finished lunch with a cup of filter coffee . The soup was hot and spicy. I liked it. The thali was delicious. The fish curry and mutton curry was my favorite . I didn't like the Sambar and rasam . The filter coffee was good. The only thing I didn't like was the container for sugar. Sugar packets were stained presumably with coffee /tea. Overall , lunch was satisfying. I would go back and try other menu items
google avatar

Shoba S.

Yelp
The food was ok but greasy! Their service was good as the server kept coming tk check up on us!

Ario A.

Yelp
Recently got an Ambur chicken biryani and keseri. Biryani was good love the spice level and they used small grains so it was different than basmati rice. Somehow I felt some taste factor was missing. The keseri (dessert) damn good. I would definitely go back and try other dishes in the menu.

harshini r.

Yelp
I m satisfied with food I ate 1. Paniyaram 2. Mysore masala dosa 3. Poratta with salan

Balmu N.

Yelp
The food was really tasty and Authentic South Indian! Must try for anyone craving a Thalapakati Mutton Biriyani and Madras chili chicken! The portion size is large compared to other Indian restaurants so plan accordingly. Also service was quick and neat ! A must try ! If you love Indian food.

Rok L.

Yelp
The food was fresh and super tasty. It was crowded but not too bad. The salt lassi and mango lassis were great. Don't hesitate to go to this restaurant. It is really good!

Archana B.

Yelp
Food tasted pretty good - most dishes managed to capture the authentic South Indian flavor. So that part was good. But the service - it was horrible. The waiting staff refused to take away the empty dishes (apparently only the one designated clearing away person could do it and one person was not enough for the crowded restaurant). We were a hungry bunch and had to start to stacking our plates on the dirty dishes to find space. All the dishes arrived without serving utensils and the request to bring them went unmet right till we left. We got creative with the usage of our individual forks and spoons. Anytime any request was made (these were for things like sugar for the coffee, glasses for the water etc.), it was received with a sigh and a put-upon look. More often than not, the request did not result in any response action either. Apparently, this kind of service is par for the course for this restaurant, based on the experience my friends who live here have had. I doubt the restaurant would have survived with this attitude in the California Bay Area. But I guess, lack of competition keeps this one running. The food was mostly good and the company I had was excellent. But service-wise, this places right near the top of the worst list. Unfortunately, the good food does not make up for the terrible service.

Yelp
Flavorful thali, crunchy dosa and satisfactory idli. Good customer service. Would visit again
google avatar

Roshni R.

Yelp
This place is our new favorite for South Indian food! Everything tastes fresh and yummy! The madras chicken curry is a must try! Dosas were great too.
google avatar

Sumana S.

Yelp
We enjoy Madurai Mes. They are not pretentious and try to provide an authentic experience. Unfortunately this means that some curries are mouth burning ly hot , so you should really be careful and go with mild if it's your first time. The tiffin thali is great - our teen can't finish it . The lunch Thalis are also great. We've tried both veg and non veg thalis and liked them. The dosa , idli etc are fine too along with sambar and chutneys that come with it. Thalapakatti Biryani ( mutton) is fairly similar to what you'd get in India and I've gotta respect the not-dumbing-down attitude although my stomach complains a wee bit.

Ishan M.

Yelp
Not a great place for vegetarian folks ... overall food taste was ok but the smell in the ambience is terrible
google avatar

V P.

Yelp
Non-veg thali was very good... quantity and taste.

Monisha S.

Yelp
Food was ok but the owner was rude. The price is little high compared to the area restaurants. Never going back It's a new restaurant and still works are going on. Try your luck.
google avatar

Kaitlin A.

Yelp
The food is tasty and the staff is kind! My personal favorite is the saag paneer. Try it out!
google avatar

Venkatesh K.

Yelp
Went with family on a busy Sunday evening. Place was not not busy Service was not good. We didnt get our food in one go, each person got food after every 10 mins. So we ended spending there for 2 hours overall. Didnt felt like had dinner together. Food was ok. Not that great if you compare the time we spent. Indo Chinese they copied the Inchins menu that too very bad wasted money.
google avatar

NMfive M.

Yelp
Great food and service. Tika Masala and naan were fantastic.I will go back for sure.

Dallas T.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Madurai food. Great service, clean and hygenic which makes you feel at home to have food.

Navami V.

Yelp
Lovely food! Authentic taste! Loved the gravy given with biriyani.. Staff was very welcoming and generous with raita

Alan N.

Yelp
South Indian food was better than other places I tried. Would recommend to others . Will return to try other dishes

Emmanuel Vijay A.

Yelp
Pathetic food, the chicken was undercooked and still had blood and price are way over other restaurants. Would never try again.

Hemanth K.

Yelp
Best Dosa in the city, have never been disappointed with their preparation of fully roast.

Tina S.

Yelp
Lovely new place. Owners are charming and inviting. Food is fabulous and tasty. Portions are huge. There was a smell in the side room not sure if it was cleaning materials or what can be off putting. But the servers are really amiable and willing to help. Veg non veg faire. Loved the dosa chutneys sambhar and tiffin items and malai kofta and parontha and lacchi roti.

Foodiee L.

Yelp
Food was ok. Management seriously need to look on the person who took our order. It was a very bed experience for us.

Abdulhakkim S.

Yelp
My wife and 10 of her friends went for a ladies lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the Veg Thali. Great variety of side dishes and very tasty

Chandramohan D.

Yelp
New restaurant in the area for Tamil Nadu style food. I bought mutton Thalappakatti Biryani and it was very good. The mutton was cooked well and the spices were at the right level. Definitely going back to other items!
