13 Standout Vegetarian Meals in Portland | Eater Portland

"Since Thai food relies so heavily on ingredients like coconut milk, rice, and a plethora of veggies, many Thai dishes are often naturally meat-free by simply eliminating the animal protein. There are a number of great Thai places across Portland, but there’s something special about Mae Ploy on Alberta; you can taste the quality in everything from the spicy green papaya salad, to the spring rolls, to the pumpkin curry, to the hot basil fried rice, which can be made with tofu or just vegetables. Order online for takeout." - Jenni Moore

Not many people around this area may even knew about this, but this is the hidden gem and certainly a best Thai food with consistent quality . The soups, Tofu basil fried rice and Red curry are our favorites. We were never disappointed with it and so do you as well.I believe it is run by Family and they are very nice. Although small place, it has a Great ambience what great restaurants need. 5 stars and Highly recommend it.

Google
One of most authentic Thai restaurants in the Northeast! What a gem of a place! Excellent service. Creative menu, authentic recipes, little to no compromise on the ingredients and flavor. Everything is very tasty. The shop is also very cute, and family run. If you want things not on the menu or if you have special requests just ask "mom"

Google
This is the best Thai food I have had in PA ever. Everything was so fresh. From the vegetable soup, the spring rolls, the summer rolls, and their curry. I love Thai Hot - and it did not disappoint at all. The flavor of the chilis and how fresh everything tasted was eye opening. Food is made with love and care. Service was amazing. Will be back

Google
Our new fav Thai spot. We tried a couple of things but too many though. The food was on a little sweeter side but still very light and tasty. It feels very fresh to eat which we haven’t find in the area so far.

Google
It's a very nice Thai restaurant. Our waitstaff was very eager yet courteous. You could tell she enjoyed her work. I thought the food was very decent, and folks around the table agreed with me. The price was reasonable for what you got ($13.99 for each dish). The same food is $11.99 for the weekday lunch specials. We had a $10 off coupon, so it saved us some money. Overall a very good dining experience here. I'd recommend it if you are nearby.

Google
Cute and inviting restaurant. Service was okay. Good was not bad. The Drunkin Noodle was good. The Beef Laab was okay. More on the sweet end. Lack the rice ponder that I’m accustomed to in this type of dishes. Maybe a different style. Overall, good experience and good food.

Yelp
We have regularly visited Mae Ploy for almost 3 years. The food is consistency 5 star. Our favorites are the Thai Beef Salad, Garlic Sauce with Chicken, Pad Thai with Chicken, Tom Ka Gai, and Mango Sticky Rice. The service is excellent and the staff is beyond helpful and always welcoming. Tucked into a larger shopping center, the ambiance of this gem is warm. It is our family's favorite Thai food!

Sara W.

Yelp
My mom and I ate here for the first time last night, but we'll definitely be back! We loved the food we got--she ordered a soup with duck and I ordered a ground chicken dish with rice. They were both very flavorful and tasty. We got the mango sticky rice for dessert, which was also excellent. The service was great and I enjoyed the decorations, especially the waterfall over a mirror by the door.

Yelp
Very friendly service and super convenient location. It's got a nice vibe despite the small location; no fast food hustle at all. If you like it hot, ask for hot! The default is very weak, yet they'll make it Thai hot if you know you want it like that.

Yelp
I am so pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. I have had Thai all over North America with some of the most memorable dishes in Toronto and New York City but this restaurant has made my top 3. I never could have imagined this gem tucked away in Pennsylvania. The food was amazing and unique. The chicken khao soi was a little spicy and a little sweet but absolutely perfect. The waitress we had was so sweet and attentive, the food was hot and perfectly cooked. Overall I have no notes. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Another excellent meal. The spring rolls were crispy and delicious. I was given a delicious treat to try, a glass of Butterfly Pea Flower tea. I looked it up later and it comes from a stunningly beautiful blue flower, and tastes like sweetened ice tea. It was both a beautiful color and delicious, and I very much appreciate the kind gesture. I have a Thai friend who recommended this place to me. I tried her favorite, which is #44, the Kua Kai Noodles. The kitchen was good about substituting shrimp instead of chicken, and it was a very flavorful dish. Next time I plan on trying the Duck Noodle Soup.

Yelp
Excellent beef chili basil. Fried rice was some of the tastiest I've ever had. Tom Kah soup with chicken was spicy. I never had it spicy and it was delicious. Service was excellent. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We enjoyed a very nice lunch today. The food was delicious and portion size was large. Also not a long wait! The service really was excellent. I especially enjoyed the Crab Rangoon, milk tea and drunken noodles. Next time I will try their boba tea. The restaurant is small, but clean & quiet. A Very good place for a nice lunch with friends. I wish I would have taken photos because the food was presented beautifully, but I was so hungry lol! They also have take out. If you're craving Thai food, then this is a great place to try out.

Yelp
First takeout order in the books. Super easy to order online and food was hot and ready upon arrival. They are attentive to notes since my kiddo askes for no bean sprouts in her pad thai and it was without. Peanuts tucked in a corner too in case you don't want them in every bit. Nice little touch. Sticky white rice was just the right amount and in cute packaging. Crab rangoon stuffed and nice and crispy. My dish was the Chili Basil (Chili, basil, garlic, green bean, bell pepper, onion, savory brown sauce) requested medium and it had a nice subtle spice. Brown sauce was more watery than savory, but tons of fresh vegetables and one of the healthier dishes I've ordered before from this type of restaurant. My wife really enjoyed the Drunken Noodle and it was very yummy. Not greasy at all. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by an eager and enthusiastic wait staff. She was pleasant and courteous. Food was fair to very good (split decision, but good win out). My wife said her pad Thai was just OK, and she had it better elsewhere. I was looking for something on the light side, so I opted on a mixed vegetables with chicken. The flavor was good, but I was thinking there weren't too many chicken pieces. I was so glad that it wasn't too sweet like some of Asian eateries in a food court. Lard was refreshing though as you approached the bottom of the plate the spicy lime dressing got really spicy according to my daughter. Yellow curry with vegetables was very enjoyable. Overall, it was a very nice Family dinner on Saturday at Mae Ploy. I'm willing to go back and give it another try. Oh yeah, my daughter whipped out a $10-off-on-$50-bill coupon from her purse, so I was able to save some money (20%). Good food and good company, (and $10off coupon) are win win combinations. If you're in the area, why don't you give it a try!

Yelp
So I'll say, this isn't my favorite Thai restaurant, but the food is quite good. One really nice thing about this place is the side variety of options. Many local Thai spots focus on noodles, stir fry, and curries, and this place certainly has all of that. But they also have some interesting options, like duck on the roll, and the Thai style sweet and sour chicken. I've seen lots of takes on Thai S&S, but it's not overly common in this area. This take is quite similar to Chinese takeout, but the sauce is much, much better. The chicken is also incredibly crispy, so quite satisfying. The Khao Soy is also quite good, but unlike other takes on it, they use a noodle very similar to ramen. They also fry up their egg noodles for their topping instead of thinner noodles like I've seen elsewhere. The noodle dishes are good, but I was disappointed by the portion size. It was enough, but pretty much everywhere else in the area gives enough for two meals, and more so much here. Possibly just a one off, though. So yeah, give this place a shot! For curries, still not my favorite, but their wide variety of options and still-tasty offerings are worth giving this place a try.

Yelp
We tried this restaurant for the 1st time and ordered Penang curry and pineapple fried rice. Both were the worst we have ever tried. There was no flavor in both of them. Nobody in PA knows how to make Penang curry.

Yelp
First time trying this place out, ordered Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken GREEN Curry, 2 Papaya Salad (One Laos style and one Thai style). Pad Thai is okay, not very good compared to a bunch of other places but not bad. Green curry but was given yellow curry. The curry flavor is lacking and bland. The papaya salad is NOT even worth getting for the amount that is given, you also ONLY get 2 pieces of Shrimp for the price. If you want real good papaya salad, Go to the FDR park on the weekends, similar prices for more and better flavor.. Friendly but food quality is not worth the price.

Marissa R.

Yelp
Some of the most flavorful, genuinely drunken noodles I remember ever having. Friendly but not overbearing service. Cute interior. Highly recommend! I plan to come back with friends.

Yelp
This is a new Thai place that opened in Royersford (the same shopping center as Han Dynasty, Chik-fil-A, Texas Roadhouse, etc). The design is more modern and light with Thai elements. We went for lunch and were happy with the selections and prices. Lunch specials for $9.99 come with a light housemade vegetable soup, crispy spring roll and your choice of entree. The Pad Thai was decent and maybe had a touch too much sauce. The Larb Gai (ground chicken salad) was refreshing. The Thai Basil beef was also sauced in a savory sauce. Thai iced tea was a bit sweet but they corrected it immediately with some added milk.

Yelp
Confusing portion sizes will leave diners puzzled. Food is delicious however buyers beware! We have now dined in several times. The dine-in lunch special portions are undersized to match the price of the "deal" you are getting. The dinner portions for dine-in are enormous. Asked for takeout containers to package up the rest of the food. They took our plates in the back and used the small containers. Knowing what was left in our plates and bowls, we know that we didn't get to take home all of our leftovers because they only filled a small container with each plate, meaning much of it went in the trash. After noticing this we had to wait a long time for our check, so I watched the people coming in to pick up to-go orders. All of these were packed in small containers as well. Prices are the same for dine-in or to-go, so the takeout customers are overpaying. Probably won't return unless I bring my own containers for leftovers.

Yelp
Ordered the Pineapple fried rice for takeout. FYI, when I called to place order all I got was a hello, several of them. Otherwise ordering and pickup were good. Located in strip mall. Signage was good enough to find the place. Upon entering there was a scent of incense. Food was in cardboard container. First, did not match description (big pet peeve for me). There were no eggs or carrot as noted in the menu, but bonus; there was the unexpected broccoli. Chicken was dry and overcooked, rice was greasy. All in all it tasted ok, the curry taste was faint. I'm game to try again. But, the Lack of attention to detail makes me skeptical

Yelp
BEST Thai restaurant! This place is a hidden gem. Service is very good, restaurant is clean, simple and food is authentic Thai. Watch out for the heat and - best part - another one - the folks are super kind and friendly.

Yelp
Doesn't look amazing from the outside, but has really authentic and delicious food. Large menu and helpful staff!

Yelp
The best Thai in the area, no question. Ever since Thai Elephant changed hands, I've been looking for great Thai and found it here. I'm all in.

Yelp
Best Thai place in town! My favorite - Drunken Noodles!! Good service and delicious food

Yelp
Another post for this Restaurant. Absolutely my favorite Thai food. I don't usually make comments but this is my second for Mae Ploy. Don't miss out on some of the best .

Yelp
My family dine out quite often, and love trying new food. Especially new places, when Mae Ploy Thai Cuisine was opening, we were excited! I have to sadly say that we were disappointed with the food. We ordered duck curry, druken noodle, tom kha, spring roll and tom yum noodles. Of everything, the appetizer spring rolls were the best. ALL of the curry lacked coconut milk so it was watered down and was bland. Drunken noodle was OK. Tom Kha tasted like they took the Tom Yum and threw some light coconut milk to make it Tom Kha. The Duck Curry was the worst we've ever had, the curry was watered down and duck had no flavor. Lastly, the packaging was not great. They just put a plastic lid on top of hot soup. Most of the places we've ordered will wrap it up understanding the plastic container will get soft and bend and will spill! They have potential, might give them a shot again in the future when things turn around. For better Thai food in the area, we'd recommend Tai Me Up, Thai Spice, Thai Place or Thai Orchid.

Yelp
Delicious food and helpful staff when it came to picking dishes and amount of heat. Definitely one of our favorite Thai restaurants

Emily T.

Yelp
They were super accommodating toward our large party of 11! Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. The restaurant itself is calming and beautifully decorated. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a delicious Thai restaurant!

Yelp
Amazing Thai food! The Drunken Noodles are the perfect spice level, tom kha is wonderful, and the appetizers are on point. Definitely finding an excuse to come back to are area soon so we can eat here again

Yelp
I really enjoyed my first visit here - ordered takeout. Pad Thai and Cashew Chicken are my go-tos, and these did not disappoint. It was delicious, and the person working behind the counter was friendly and answered all my questions about items on the menu. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
You need to eat here! The panang curry was super tasty and the shrimp pad see ew was sooo good - I will be back for sure! I disagree with the reviews that talk about anything being bland or watery - my food was amazeballs! We also had the coconut custard and sticky rice for dessert - it was the perfect pairing - the sticky rice is super sweet and complimented the less-sweet coconut custard so well. I thought the decor and atmosphere were nice - very clean, modern and cute. We were greeted politely upon walking in and had great service. Love it!

Holly B.

Yelp
The Kua Kai noodles are to die for but I am disappointed with this place. They USED to offer this great soup, a spring roll and an entrée for the lunch special. Then they took away the fantastic soup and reduced the size of the spring roll to this tiny little thing. Then they raised their prices. And the oil they fry in is NOT Thai! It is a heavy, very greasy oil that makes everything overly dry and hard to chew. And the Tom Ka soup is just the Tum Yum soup with a bit of coconut milk thrown in.

David S.

Yelp
Huge portions. The three of us each ordered an entire. We could have ordered two and had plenty to eat. The crispy duck soup was enormous withe plenty of duck, delicious broth and noodles. The drunken noodles with chicken were pleasantly spicy and again with enough to share. the seafood pad cha was delicious, with scallop, shrimp, mussels and squid. We will definitely return the next time we're in the area.

Yelp
My wife and I were hungry and drove thru the shopping center to see what options we had. So happy to see a new Thai restaurant, Mae Ploy. The waitress was so pleasant and passionate as she explained some menu options. I asked her name and she said Ploy. Mae is her mom who does the cooking. They are both from Thailand and we felt like we were there with them- true authentic Thai!!! Ploy explained how she loves when people try new food they don't normally order because there are so many amazing flavors and dishes.. My adventurous wife got the recommended ginger chicken curry over pasta (don't remember official name). DELICIOUS. SHE LOVED IT.. I'm boring and stuck with my favorite, lemon grass soup and peanut curry (Masaman Curry) with shrimp... Food was great. Prices reasonable. Not fancy inside, but clean and cozy. Recommend the shrimp over the chicken. They've been in business six months and it's just the two of them working there. They don't advertise much and it's mostly been word-of-mouth and repeat business for them. We will definitely keep eating there and hope you do too!!!

Yelp
I have to say the strip mall ambiance was the only thing taken away from this meal. The food was excellent! Some of the best Thai I have had in PA. The soup was had served for two piping hot and delicious. I had the drunken noodles ordered with pork, which was outstanding, well spiced and lots of noodles. My lovely date had the Thai ginger with chicken. Very ginger forward but delicious. Our waitress was excellent and every good at making suggestions. The soup was her idea as a shared dish. Worth a visit and an excellent meal!

Michelle D.

Yelp
Ww tried this place tonight and wow! Amazing! We ahared the calamari and duck on a roll appetizers. The calamari was fantastic! I had the crispy basil duck and my husband had crispy chicken over rice. Excellent food, huge portion of chicken. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Food is amazing! So tasty and packed with flavor. We had the beef soup and sweet and sour chicken, both are incredible!

S F.

Yelp
This new Thai restaurant is fantastic! Ordered: Drunken noodles w/chicken Pad Thai shrimp Summer rolls with shrimp The food and service was delicious. HIGHLY recommend. Eat in or take out!

Cassandra W.

Yelp
Amazing food and amazing service. So glad to have a Thai place so close to home. All the food was fresh and delicious.

Kevin P.

Yelp
Excellent food, best Thai in the area. Used to drive a lot further, this is better and closer

Perry P.

Yelp
I love this place, everything I've gotten so far has been perfect. I always get take out and it's made quickly and is still hot by the time I get home. Also the "spicy" option is actually spicy, which is a nice bonus.

Christian J.

Yelp
This place is so good! Might be the best Thai food I've ever had. The owner was so nice and welcoming when I stopped in to pick up my order- she even gave me 2 free teas! We had a large order of 3 different pad thai, drunken noodles, steak, crab Rangoon and more. It was all so delicious! I would highly recommend giving this place a try you will not be disappointed! The spice levels also do not disappoint

Haley M.

Yelp
I am always on the search for great Thai restaurants and was happy to find out Mae Ploy had opened just minutes from my house. I placed an order for pickup and was welcomed as soon as I walked in. Eating in is an option in a friendly and laid back atmosphere. The food is spectacular and had me wishing I placed a larger order. I will definitely be back!!

Karen F.

Yelp
One of the best green curries I've ever had! Not crazy about the way they cut their chicken but that's minor and easily overlooked because the flavor is outstanding. Will definitely be back.

Janice W.

Yelp
We wanted to try this new place since reading great reviews. We were not disappointed! The food was so delicious! The wonton soup, served in a heated pot, had fresh snow peas and napa cabbage in the broth and the wontons were filled with tender chicken and shrimp. The chicken Pad Thai and the chicken Chili Basil were both fantastic as well! looking forward to returning to try more dishes.

Roberta G.

Yelp
Had our first meal from Mae Ploy. We ordered the following using their online takeout menu: Drunken Noodles with Chicken, Vegetable Dumpling Soup, Vegetable Spring Rolls. Drunken Noodles and Vegetable dumpling soup were both fabulous. Spring Rolls were also very good, though nothing exciting. Everything was well packaged and meal arrived after a 15 minute drive to our home still hot and spring rolls still nice and crisp. We'll definitely be back for more Drunken Noodles and Dumpling Soup and to try more of their menu.

Mike G.

Yelp
The individual working was extremely courteous, helpful and pleasant and the food was delicious
