13 Standout Vegetarian Meals in Portland - Eater Portland

"Since Thai food relies so heavily on ingredients like coconut milk, rice, and a plethora of veggies, many Thai dishes are often naturally meat-free by simply eliminating the animal protein. There are a number of great Thai places across Portland, but there’s something special about Mae Ploy on Alberta; you can taste the quality in everything from the spicy green papaya salad, to the spring rolls, to the pumpkin curry, to the hot basil fried rice, which can be made with tofu or just vegetables. Order online for takeout." - Jenni Moore

Google
Thai food is my absolute favorite food, and Mae Ploy is probably my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland. With how many Thai restaurants there are in the city, that’s really saying something. This joint consistently serves up food that is fresh, clean, and tasty as all get out. If that weren’t enough, the service is unbelievably friendly, and the space is cozy. If you’re enjoying a walk down Alberta, it’s hard to do better for lunch than Mae Ploy.

Mai Ploy is a great, local, small business Thai food restaurant. We love this place, the flavors in the food are the best, love the pad Thai, all the curries, fried rice and Tom Yum soups. Fast and friendly service at a reasonable price. Bar for cocktails, Thai iced tea is the best. Parking is free on the street.

Google
I ordered the chicken pad Thai and it was delicious. The didn’t overload it with sauce, and for the price, the portions were extremely generous. Service was outstanding too.

Perfect in every way. Meat is perfectly moist, flavors so fresh, and presentation is beautiful. It’s a steal of a value, all other Thai food in town is inferior. Definitely one of Portland’s best. Pad Ka Prow Bowl is 10/10 would eat everyday of my life.

Google
Friendly staff and the food was also tasty. As a typical basic customer I always try pad thai first. It was excellent, the best on the street. The staff was good with giving recommendations. I took take-out last time but will stay to check out the vibe the next time I go.

Google
Great customer service. Clean place. Clean bathroom!!! - that is very important to me! (If place got not a clean bathroom imagine what's going on in the kitchen.) Food is really good. I like them salad rolls with shrimp, peanut butter sauce was good. Chicken wings? - sauce was pretty tasty, chicken itself not great. I would definitely come back and try something else... 😉👍

Looking for a great place that showcases the diversity of Thai food? Come and be delighted with this neighborhood restaurant. Thai iced coffee and tea available as well as a large and well executed menu. Family friendly with a full bar.

Google
Amazing fried rice and spicy eggplant, can't wait to come back! Also the best mango sticky rice, highly recommend. 👍🏾

Yelp
sanae thai incorporates charm ("sanae" in thai) & flavor into the dining experience for their customers. they also emphasize authentic food & great hospitality/service, which we got to experience first hand! -- FOOD -- we got a whole lotta stuff to share: - dry rub tom yum zap wings - fried tofu (w peanut sauce) - salad rolls (w peanut sauce) - mama hot pot - pad thai - pineapple fried rice - mango sticky rice -- LOCATION DETAILS -- PARKING: lots of street/neighborhood parking around SEATING: decent amount of tables & v random, but I loved the chairs lol! VIBE/AMBIANCE: cute, cozy, casual & lots of lighting! PRICE: $$, most expensive entree we had was $20 (most entrees will be about $15). SERVICE: very friendly, accommodating & quick!

Yelp
Wanted to love this place but my pad tai was only okay, I am a maniac for great pad tai and if you read my reviews, you will see I order it a lot. Service was prompt and pretty good for only one person working the restaurant. Ambiance was cozy. I did really like the pictures of the food they serve and getting to people watch from our table at the window. Prices were reasonable for today: -2 appetizers -4 drinks -4 entrees -22% tip - $150 total

Yelp
Always looking for good Thai spots to try and Sanae Thai eatery is a must! Huge menu with delicious food and friendly staff. Quickly sat and we ordered Thai tea, crab rangoons, potstickers, pad Thai, pork wonton shrimp hot pot, and of course can't go to a Thai spot without trying their Khao Soi. Khao Soi was perfect and such a big portion that I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Sadly had to board a plane home shortly after so I couldn't keep my leftovers but that portion could have fed 2 people. I had never had it as a hot pot dish so I struggled a little getting the chicken off the bone without almost spilling the whole bowl. Apart from that the meal was perfect. I can't wait to return and try some more delicious plates, definitely worth the hype!

Yelp
The best Thai food I've ever had! The service was super friendly. I was visiting from out of town and I think this has ruined my Thai places back home.

Yelp
The service is friendly and welcoming. I was able to sit wherever I liked that was available. There were two servers, both were attentive. It was my first time, having seen the photos of food, we got the wings and chicken pad kee mao and crab Rangoon. Rangoons were good. Nothing too different than other Asian places. Spicy Thai basil wings I recommend getting rice with since it was sort of salty to eat by itself. Tom yum wings were AMAAAAZING. very addicting and battered with crispness! Pad kee mao had plenty of veggies but could be spicier. They didn't ask us about spice level though. The setting is cozy but with plenty of space between other parties. Parking can be hard but Friday night around 7 was perfect. Both Thai iced tea and Thai iced green tea were delicious! Will come back to try other dishes!

Yelp
Extensive manual, with items that you would not see in any other Thai restaurant menu. I decided to be daring, try food, that I have nit had before. Overall solid 4. Ordered Mama Salad, chicken wings with Tom Yum zop sauce, braised beef noodle hot pot, and mango With sticky rica e., Mama hsalad was great taste, but noodle was too warm too eat as salad, but tasty. Chicken wings were bomb!!! we picked Tom Yum... fries perfectly then chatted with sauce... 5++++. Hot pot with beef, was so so. Little too sweet, rice noodle was soggy, and had 5 spice (unusual for Thai soup) and bit too sweet for me. Mango and sticky rice, you can't really go Wrong with that. Definitely would go back and try some other things and try different flavor hot wings!

Yelp
This place is great. Came here on a cold and stormy Saturday night and the experience did not disappoint. We promptly ordered and the menu is great in that it has all the classics along with some specialty items. The wings looked great even if I didn't get them this time around. Portions were significant and the food was all tasty. Wound up going for the lemongrass pad Thai which came with a great peanut sauce. The flavors were rich and hearty, exactly what I wanted. Overall service was solid and the atmosphere is casual and quaint. Definitely would be a good place for takeout if you're in the area. But would certainly come back and try more dishes!

Yelp
In a city teeming with Thai restaurants, Sanai manages to carve their own niche. And do it well. The vibe upon entering is welcoming, bright, peaceful, caring. That vibe extends to the service. My server was friendly, attentive without being cloying. She seemed to care if I had everything I need, all the condiments I might want, enough water. She was knowledgeable about the menu. When I shared that I was stuck between two choices offered on their menu, one that offers many traditional Thai dishes not often found in Portland's Thai scene, she spent a bit of time helping me unpack each. I ended up going with a traditional Thai dish from their Fall and Winter menu, Khao Soi Pot, a dish so redolent of the best street food I found in the hidden Soi's of Thailand that it sent me back to pleasurable memories. The broth, a not too rich chickeny coconut, served as the host of succulent, dark chicken thigh meat and some flavorful noodles. A side dish of pickled veggies, onions, bean sprouts, and lime allowed me to punch it up as I desired. With some chili oil I was in food bliss, perfect on this transitional autumn day. I always think the simple salad roll can tell a lot about a Thai kitchen. This one definitely did. Clearly made while I waited, the wrapper was plush, soft, packed with fresh crispy lettuce, parsley, sprouts, i am not a big fan of peanut sauce but theirs was flavorful. I personally would have preferred a vinegar based dipped. Small, personal preference. I am looking forward to returning with a group so we can taste a lot more of that capacious menu. The place is accessible and street parking was not hard to find.

Yelp
Delicious eating experience! Very nice and thoughtful service. The mango sticky rice is so rich...yummy!

Yelp
I found this place on instagram and saw how amazing the food looked! The place is big and spacious with outdoor seatings. They have a wide selection of traditional and specialty thai dishes. I got the khao man gai and you had the option to choose between dark or white meat (not both). I chose the white meat option which I regret because the chicken was dry. The rice and sauces the came with it was very good though. My favorite was the chicken wings! There were 5 different flavors to choose from and we got the spicy basil sauce. It wasn't spicy but it was packed with flavor. I also recommend their thai iced green tea, it was the perfect amount of tea and sweetness. Our server was so friendly and helpful. She came by a few times to check in on us. There's so many dishes I wanted to try I'll definitely return here soon

Yelp
I usually don't write review and I don't care about review when I go to restaurant but this restaurant. I am not sure the Chef or actual recipe that makes food disappointed. we ordered 5 items and they all don't get Thai taste at all. I get it they prepared for western style Thai Food but at least they have to give a bit Thai taste to customer. Boat noodle broth is not even close to actual boat noodle soup broth. It's regular Pha noodle soup base. For the Fried chicken all I taste is salt yes it's super salty. At least the server is super nice and she is the only one working at front. I gave 2 stars to server not the food. This is the worst Thai Restaurant I have ever experienced in Portland.

Yelp
Wanted to gate keep this place because I love not having long wait times since I drive all the way over from Hillsboro (it's that good) but the food is amazing and the service is 100% every time.
google avatar

Yaya S.

Yelp
you'll find alot of unique menu items here, consisting of both a mix of traditional thai dishes & fusion takes on thai food! its not your standard thai restaurant, so make sure to try their special items, or branch a bit outside of your standard comfort zone. everything was full of flavor, incredible service that was more than lovely, and a clean dining space. parking isnt too difficult considering the residential areas nearby, but i have a feeling this place will be a new gem in the alberta neighborhood! khob khun ka! aroi mak

Yelp
The spicy basil chicken wings were sooo yummy! A good amount of spice that paired well with the crispy basil. The juicy to crispy ratio was a little off, not as juicy as I like and not as crispy as I like probably due to the sauce. The Thai iced tea was super sweet and refreshing. Great little afternoon snack

Yelp
So beyond disappointing. What is this?!? I don't think I've ever posted a more infuriating post! $96 of absolute sadness. The noodles with dried noodles tasted like it had been in my grannies basement for eternity.....neither soup nor curry had a smidge of broth and the curry had no veggies, just meat. I absolutely loved Mae ploy....I don't know if this is under new ownership or the same family trying to recreate themselves but it's not working. This is awful and sad. Even the pad Thai was lacking. I'm absolutely heartbroken how the quality has died. They will too if they can't figure out how to fix this.

Yelp
This was a delicious Saturday lunch! The menu is extensive and creative, but I always order the same thing on my first visit to any Thai restaurant, as a litmus test - Pad Thai, of course, with Shrimp. The Shrimp, because it is so easy to do it badly, and the Pad Thai because, well, it's right there in the name! It's simple, but should be a signature dish. Sanae did not disappoint - plenty of large, tender Shrimp, tender & tasty noodles and toppings. We also ordered Stuffed Bean Curd, a Braised Beef Bowl and this amazing Tilapia dish presented whole, but filleted and cut into bite sized squares and perfectly fried - this is big enough to share and best eaten with no utensils. Go for the flavors, stay for the portions! Dessert was offered, but we were stuffed!

Yelp
The Tom Yum soup was love at first sight, and SO DELICIOUS!!! You must have it. We also loved the decor and the furniture, and the chopsticks (little details matter!) were incredibly high quality.

Yelp
This Thai restaurant is absolutely SLEPT ON right now. Once a food review goes viral, you'll have to wait in line to eat here. The Khao Soi here is amazing. It's $17 and is a healthy portion, or you can get it in a hot pot for $22 (shareable with 2 people!) I also love the lemongrass Pad Thai. One thing that this place offers is a spice caddy. In the spice caddy, there's red pepper flakes, chili paste, pickled jalapeños, and Thai chilis in fish sauce. Doctor up your food how you like it!
google avatar

Yelp
I came here for their deep fried pork knuckle and it did not disappoint! The skin was a decent crispy and the meat was juicy and fatty! The thai dipping sauce on the side is addicting, we had to ask for more! The deep fried soft shell crab with curry vermicelli was a pleasant surprise. It was my 1st time trying this noodle and i really enjoyed it. It felt like comfort food, we went back the next day and ordered it again. It is a seasonal item. I recommend the tomyum wings! The flavor was strong and the wings were fried well! I loved their dry khao soi. We chose the beef and it was so tender. The noodles soaked in the sauce so well and wasnt dry at all. Definitely recommend! The corn fritter, pad thai and the noodle salad were a bit underwhelming. The pad thai(w/ tofu) and the noodle salad were quite bland.

Paul G.

Yelp
Possibly my best Thai food experience. Happened to stop off here for lunch on a sunny February day. Place was almost empty around 2pm. I ordered the Tom Kha noodles in soup. Everything about this dish was incredible. Sweet, savory, veggies, meat, noodles, delicious broth. Like giving my insides a warm hug haha. Almost brought to tears. Just incredible. Thanks to the folks front and back of house for the hospitality and a very dime noodle bowl.

Yelp
Went there for lunch on Friday ! The food was great, the chicken with rice is the must try dish!!! The rice noodles one can be improved--it was very chunky and the noodles were more like a dough. If they can separated the noodles--that would be great!!! Service was very good, she came around all the time to check on us.

Yelp
My friend told me how good this place was so I stopped by to place a to go order to take home. The thai iced tea and green iced tea were delicious (would definitely get again) and the khao man gai rivaled the best in town. The fresh herbs on the soup really made it pop, the chicken was perfectly cooked, and the rice was great too. The sauce! We'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great lunch specials, great service, but the Hat Yai chicken is the absolute best. It's my favorite Thai place in PDX.
google avatar

Yelp
I've walked by this spot so many times and i always stopped and looked at the menu because they have it on the window WITH PICTURES ! haha always looked good and they def did NOT disappoint!

Yelp
I went in here the other day and tried a couple of dishes to get a feel for the restaurant - the "beef with roasted rice salad" and the "pad curry". I wouldn't normally order a steak salad at a Thai place, but I was really craving it that day, and it definitely delivered. Although it was just called 'beef' on the menu, it was a nice cut of steak cooked medium rare and the toasted rice coating had a tasty blend of spices and seasonings. It was familiar, but given a Thai pizazz. I ordered the pad curry to taste what the more traditional Thai food was like, and it made me want to come back and try more - a strong but not overwhelming flavor from quality ingredients and spices, and an exciting mix of textures from the vegetables, chicken, and curry. The food came out quick and hot, which I appreciated since I was just eating alone and wanted a quick (but good) meal. The ambiance was nice, without being too fancy- definitely a step above the cheaper Thai places, but nothing you'd need to dress up for. It would be a good place for a casual date, espeically with how big and varied the menu is (and with the full bar).

Yelp
Great food and great service. If you would like to have authentic Thai food, this is the place you must go. They have so many food that we would like to come and try. If my family visit me in Portland, I would definitely bring them here.
google avatar

Kerry J.

Yelp
We really wanted to like this place and our first visit was great. The second visit last week was on a busier night and it was really sub par. Nice people but really disorganized. Inconsistent quality, and everything came out at different times. I wound up taking my order home because my partner had already finished her meal when mine finally came out. That said, on a slow night you should have better luck and the servers are really nice.

Yelp
Just tried them for the first time a bit over a week ago. Was looking for a takeout and found this new Thai food place. Got the Pad Kee Mao (also known as Drunken Noodle). Large portion and yummy flavor. The person who assisted was lovely. Made sure I was comfortable, offered me something to drink while I was waiting. Overall a great experience.

Ana S.

Yelp
I found this place on Instagram reels, definitely lives up to the hype! Being vegan I've only been able to try so many things on the menu, but I've brought many friends who aren't and it's 10's all across the board. Whenever I'm trying to "wow" someone I'm sure to bring them here, the food is always full of flavor and comes out quickly and alwaysss hot and fresh! They have a great lunch menu as well. Perfect price point as well, if I could give 6 stars I would!!! Definitely a must try!!
google avatar

Alrx K.

Yelp
Pretty good, great customer service, I would return, food was good, ambiance was eh, nothing extraordinary.

Yelp
The drinks are so bomb!!! The spring rolls are amazing. Service is very nice. And ambiance is okay, food was amazing :)
google avatar

Yelp
We had such a yummy dinner here tonight. The inside was really nice and welcoming. We started with the Salad roll which was very fresh. I had the Pad Kee Mao, it was really good with just the right spice level. My husband got the Khao soi hang (khao soi dry) which was awesome!! complex flavors perfectly combined. My favorite drink there is the Thai iced green tea, it was perfection!! The staff was also very friendly. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Coleen M.

Yelp
The food was absolutely fresh, creative and amazing. The service was spot on. I'm so happy they are in this neighborhood, and hope that the quality is consistent once everyone finds out about them!

Yelp
We love this place, not only does the food taste delicious but the freshness is next level. The staff and kitchen cooks are so friendly they always wave, show gratitude! One night we came in late with no rush to end our meal! The hospitality has been perfect since the start.

Yelp
Walking along Alberta, we decided to try this cute Thai restaurant. What a greaT place. Beautiful dining area and menu has a great variety. I usually get pad Thai but decided to try something different. My wonton and shrimp Tom khaa hot pot was delicious s. Served with its own fuel pod to keep it hot made for hot soup too warm me on the very cold day. We will be back

Yelp
we tried sanae thai eatery last evening with a friend for dinner...i had a bottle of tsingdao, and my partner had the lemonade....our friend had a glass of chardonnay....next i had the pad kana, and she had the pad keemao i think...our friend had the pot stickers and chicken wings......we used to dine when it was mae ploy esp during covid.....the drinks/food are superb here, and the freshness and seasoning was subtle and flavorful....it's very relaxing and quiet...the murals are pretty......the staff is excellent too...she was great, thx so much....
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
Yummy affordable lunch special (I got vegan panang curry) which filled me up, in a pleasant and heated dining room, with very friendly attentive service.

Anabel C.

Yelp
I got the pad kana, which was decent but nothing crazy. Rice was on the dry side. I also got the Thai tea with coconut milk, which was great. The interior was cute, and the bathroom was very spacious and clean. Service was pretty good as well.
google avatar

Brett R.

Yelp
Great new thai restaurant! They have a number of unique menu items you can't get elsewhere. Highly recommend the Mama Hot Pot! Top notch service with an upscale atmosphere. So many items looked good I'll have to go back to try them.

Sharon R.

Yelp
I assume you no longer wish to speak with us regarding the food issues we discussed with you previously. The e-mail you gave us is not valid or accepting incoming e-mails. You can reach me via yelp.

Feroshia K.

Yelp
The food is amazing! I've been here over 7 times in the past 6 months and have brought many new friends. Now they are coming here too! They have a great menu for a variety of "food preferences" and what I love - lots of fun appetizers for group settings!

Malinda M.

Yelp
We went on a Tuesday night, the vibes and service were wonderful. They have a perfect extensive menu with pictures for everything! We got thai and green thai teas that we loved. We orded the Kua Gai stir fry, crispy chicken krapow, and the shrimp and pork wonton hot pot with tom kah broth. Everything had amazing flavor and came out hot and fresh! We orded the mango sticky rice to go and enjoyed it at home. Good prices, great food, and a spectacular restaurant!

Dominik R.

Yelp
Okay this place is great! I love that you can pick what kind of noodles you want in your soup. And they have a $12 lunch special for pad Thai/pad kee mao etc. It's pretty modern inside and the people are really friendly. Service is fast and yeah a I think a great spot! Only complaint I have is the Tom yum and kha tastes the same. The Tom yum noodle soup is a creamier less spicy/flavorful type of taste from your typical Tom yum. But regardless it's still good. The portions for the pad kee mao and pad Thai noodles are also big! And for $12 lunch special?!? Yeah you just can't beat it. If this place is closed then I recomend sa bai Thai on 131st and sandy also great. Been to like every Thai place in Portland and this place is tied for the best with sa bai in my book.

Linda S.

Yelp
Amazing food and i'm so glad i was able to find stuff that you wouldn't typically find at other Thai restaurant. Having lived in Thailand, the taste was definitely nostalgic. The fish set was flavorful and fresh, a must try. The wings packs a punch and perfectly crispy. The Pad Mama noodle definitely takes me back and should not be overlooked. The Thai-German pork set was crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside and THE SAUCE!!! Chef kiss Will definitely be back to check out all their other menu items
