The 15 Best Restaurants At The Original Farmers Market At Third & Fairfax

"Open since 1917, Magee’s isn’t just the original Farmer’s Market restaurant, it’s one of the oldest eating establishments in the entire city. As the story goes, Blanche Magee figured all the farmers dropping off produce at 3rd and Fairfax would want some lunch, so she filled a basket with corned beef and other personal favorites and started selling. Fast forward a century and this LA institution is still going strong and selling the same famous corned beef. You can get it in a sandwich with rye bread and spicy mustard, but we actually prefer it as a plate instead. That way you can experience the perfectly-balanced brininess all on its own - and get two sides of your choice as well." - brant cox

Google
A great place! They offer a great selection of roasted nuts, dried fruits, and other treats, all at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly, and the store has a cozy, welcoming vibe. Plus, they offer free tastings, so you can try before you buy! Perfect for grabbing a quick snack or stocking up on goodies.

Google
Absolutely love this place for unique nut butters. My two favorite are the macadamia nut butter and the honey roasted peanut butter. I also love the pistachio butter. They have a large selection of others I haven’t tried but they do offer samples. They have a large selection of un-ground nuts as well.

Google
The best service 🙌 great products and they tast so good will be back for more

Google
I am subtracting three stars because when I placed my order online, they have a pop-up that says if you don't leave a review, they will leave a positive review on your behalf and then you click to confirm. This is absolutely disgusting behavior! A place this good, with decades of positive reviews does not need to resort to such pathetic desperation used to manipulate people to make a purchase. This is typically the behavior of a scam business no one has ever heard of before and it doesn't make any sense that Magee's would participate in this practice. I have attached a screenshot for evidence and I hope Magee's will remove this draconian policy when ordering online. It's shameful behavior with no good reason or necessity. Magee's would be getting a great review for the sales, service and product and the fact they will WRITE IT FOR ME with my name on it, is sheer madness!

I was just lightly browsing from a distance before walking home from the market and the woman behind the counter (who was actively grinding and packaging nuts) stopped everything she was doing to offer me samples of pretty much everything they had. I wasn't planning on it but after trying a few I just had to get some of the honey roasted almond butter (it's spectacular). That lady was so awesome and this place is fantastic, definitely stop by if you're in the area, they make some really good stuff.

Google
I've had their cashew, almond and peanut butters, all of them are very good and worth getting. The reason I dropped it down to 3 stars is that I was asked by my employers (im a nanny) to pick up some peanut butter today. We arrived at the Grove around 8:30 and hung out a while. Went over to the crepe stall around 9, and saw that Magees doesn't open til 10. Well... I decided that what with my boss asking me to go here specifically, we could hang out for another hour and then head home for lunch/nap time. So we waited... around 10 we wandered back over and no one was there, waited til 10 after and still no indication that anyone was coming! So while the product is great, it'd be nice if someone was there so I could actually... you know.... buy it.

Google
I love this place. I live in Georgia and each visit to LA I go to Magees to buy cashews. They are the largest I’ve ever seen and taste really good. I like my cashews dark. I usually re-roast them when I purchase elsewhere. However, when I buy from Magees I do not need to do that. Ms. Doris is the best. She is friendly, professional, and caring; just what is needed for customer facing service.

Google
Service was excellent. He let us try everything and took his time to explain the origin of the store and process of making their peanut butters. Peanut butters were unquestionably good considering they’re pure peanuts with nothing added.

Yelp
Magee's House of Nuts has been in operation since 1917 and has been operating in The Original Farmer's Market since 1934. They have peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, fruit nut spread, macadamia butter, pistachio butter and pecan butter. There's several different types of products offered and they will make the different butters right in front of your eyes. We opted to try the Peanut Butter which is "made from 100% Roasted Unsalted Peanuts, with no added sugars, salts, oils or preservatives" I've made several peanut butter sandwiches and the peanut butter is so creamy and delicious. Magee's House of Nuts is very well-known and were even visited by President Dwight Eisenhower and The Beatles. I'm looking forward to coming back here and trying some other butters.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot at the Farmer's Market. Every week, I come here to get some fresh roasted nuts. These are so delicious and fresh. My favorite thing to order are the salted jumbo cashews. They are so full of flavor and better than anything you can find at the grocery store. The shop not only specializes in nuts but fresh ground butters, including peanut butter. The prices are reasonable and this place has been around for ages. They also offer a wide range of gifts including mixed nuts trays. This is an old school farmer's market spot that you should definitely go back to regularly!

Yelp
There was a machine churning nothing but nuts into creaminess that drew me in. Then the attentive, welcoming & friendly service made their move and I was (nut) butter in their hands. I tried most and left with Cashew (current favorite) & Macadamia (dreamy) Nut Butters. In queue are Pistachio, Honey Almond and sampling others I for another visit. In the meantime, don't drop the ball on deez nuts butters!

Yelp
We went here on a tour while on vacation in CA and had lunch at the Farmers Market. I stopped at this shop and was greeted and welcome to the business. The customer service was amazing. The young lady was so helpful and answered all my questions. She also gave a brief history of the company which I appreciate!! I sampled the peanut butter and immediately purchased some and some cashews which taste good too. They weren't loaded with a ton is salt. Just the right amount. I will definitely be placing an order in the near future. Thank you this place is a gem!!

Yelp
Best nuts in town. Biggest most buttery cashews ever. The pecans and walnuts are also AAA quality. They make peanut butter in the spot and it's as pure as it gets. I literally drive to the grove just for these nuts every week or two.

Ron K.

Yelp
Good quality nuts and nut butters. The best peanut butter I have ever tasted. But like everything else in this "farmers market" it's overpriced.

Yelp
Good products, but today I called ahead just past 6:00 to ask when they close. I was told 7:00, so I made the drive, arrived at 6:40 and the place was deserted.

Yelp
Pistachio butter is very difficult to find. Seriously, where would you have found it? Whole Foods? No one has it. It's too expensive to buy online...I'm better off buying almond or cashew butter. In the recent years, grocery stores have been selling unshelled pistachios. I'll be honest, it's not all that amazing. It is pistachios grounded up into a paste like peanut butter but only with pistachios. Yes, that's obvious. But you need to understand. It's pistachios. Again, this is a recent thing and I don't think anyone understands and appreciates this discovery at Magee's House of Nuts. If you do, we were made to be friends. They also have Macadamia butter, which is kind of runny so you should refrigerate to make it a bit firm. Watch them make nut butter with their machine. They have a lot of nuts and stuff....but...it's just...pistachio butter.

Yelp
Such a fun and friendly little stall at the market. Tasty, fresh made nut butters, and they encourage you to sample their products.

Yelp
Their variety of nuts is excellent! I call in a pound of salted cashews to be custom roasted for a time & a half (I think it's 6 minutes) and when I arrive to pick them up the cashiers are always very kind and prepared. I consider myself a cashew connoisseur & this place provides exceptional tasting cashews. The cashews sizes, textures, & level of dryness are perfect. hope Magee's house of nuts stays around for centuries to come & I need to find a way to win a lifetime supply of cashews through them haha.

Yelp
Steep prices. $4-$5 for the smallest jar (depending on type of nut) $16 for the medium plastic container of peanut butter We went when there was a promotion. We got the smallest jar of peanut butter for $1 I think Whole Foods also has fresh ground peanut butter for better pricing.

Yelp
Obsessed with Magee's almond butter. Pricy but so worth it! Plus the lady that works there is super cute, friendly and always hooks it up with samples. They also validate parking here.

Rose F.

Yelp
You do not know a nut until you have had a Magee nut. PERFECTION has been found, absolute satisfaction, and salivation at max levels. Absolutely worth it and the business righteously prices a superior product. Thank you!

Stella Y.

Yelp
Magee's House of Nuts has the BEST quality nuts and pure nut butters. Cashews and macadamias are my favorite and Magee's offers raw/roasted unsalted/roasted salted whole nuts. As well as colossal, delicious nuts, cashew, macadamia, almond, pistachio and pecan butters are perfect for breakfast, lunch, snacks! Magee's started at the Grand Central Market in 1917 and is the only original tenant of the Los Angeles Farmers Market since 1934. An autographed note from The Beatles dated Oct 5, 1964 reads: "Thank you for the Peanut Butter it was fab!" With Thanksgiving around the corner, enjoy the cornucopia of amazing harvests from nature. Buy and share Magee's wonderful products with family and friends!

Yelp
A must do if you are in the Los Angeles area, best service, best nut butters you can ever get, they may cost a little more than others but the quality is so worth it. Can't say enough good about this place and it's products.

Yelp
In LOVE with Doris!! Yes, the nuts are always fresh and the butters are to die for. BUT, lil Doris behind the counter is the reason I stop. She's an amazing soul and you can't help but want to purchase ANYTHING she is selling. Thank you Magee's, for keeping Doris behind the counter!! Oh and, thank you for the nuts!

Yelp
I love nut butters. So when I walked by Magee's the other day on my first visit to the Farmers Market, I had to have a taste. The lady behind the counter was very sweet and let me taste and ask questions to my heart's content. They have a huge selection of fresh shelled nuts as well. I ended up getting a little jar of the macadamia butter for $6.75 but I'll be back for a bigger jar in the future.

Oweness T.

Yelp
Obsessed with their Deluxe Fancy Roasted/Unsalted mix! Whole, first-class quality nuts ~ just a delicious blend. Yes, it seems expensive, but these are fresh, pure, unadulterated nut mixes. Many canned/packaged nuts have stabilizers, fillers, excessive salt and/or preservatives to keep them on shelves ad infinitum and no one should be paying for that. Magee's also carries unusual nut butters such as pecan and pistachio which are pure and not cut with oils or additives. Spotless shop with easy-to-view options plus excellent customer service. And you can just buy a small jar of a nut butter or $5 worth of nuts to check it out if you're undecided.

Yelp
They make the best fresh cashew butter!! The service is always fast and friendly and the product is first rate. Yes, it's expensive but since I don't come down here often, I don't mind the occasional splurge on my favorite nut butter.

Maggie R.

Yelp
My peanut butter go to for many years. Order by mail when I need the real deal (bought at Farmer's Mkt when lived in LA but now live in Northern Cal). Great service. Recently received offer to join their Birthday Club, which I did, & received wonderful little jar of almond butter as thank you. No wonder they've been in business so long! Maggie Roth

Yelp
Absolutely outstanding! The almond butter is excellent. I have purchased fresh ground almond butter at other stores (Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, etc.) and they become very hard in the refrigerator. The almond butter here is spreadable even after it has been refrigerated, which I think is because it is "churned". Very, very good. The other nuts are great as well and the lady who generally works there when I'm shopping is extremely nice and his been there since 1963! Very high quality and definitely a great find in LA! (it's been there since 1917--they must be doing something right!).

Victoria M.

Yelp
Purchased almond butter and fruit nut peanut butter as gifts. A little expensive but a nice local and freshly made product.

Rob B.

Yelp
Ridiculous prices. $16 for a pound of nuts? LOL.
