Nestled inside of Hotel Vin, down the hall, secretly, and with reservations only, inside the telephone door, the first thing to know is that this is a chill room. Perfect early jazz singers in the background, comfortable seating, nice dark design. It's not a lively party secret room, more for enjoying quiet conversation and good cocktails.
It's very much still a work in progress after a few weeks open. Pick up the phone in the phone booth and Clint Eastwood will tell you if you have a reservation you can get a code to enter from the restaurant reception desk. But amusingly, even the folks at reception had trouble finding the code and getting the inner door to the speakeasy open.
It's a short list of specialty cocktails, yes, even including a $40 margarita, which I suspect is on the list to make you feel better about the $20 you'll really drop on each drink. It's a short list of specialty cocktails, with the option to ask for a "dealer's choice" where they offer to make you a special drink based on your preferences. When the wife tried that, they ended up just picking something off the short menu that was close to her interests.
Felt bad for the two bartenders who had to work off the tiniest little bar I've ever seen, hardly as big as you'd expect a home bar to be. Lots of things got dropped or toppled in the process of them making just a few drinks, trying to work in such limited space. But they were good natured and joking about it. I've no doubt that over the coming weeks they'll make some adjustments for the bartenders and the room to run smoother.
Seatings are for 1 1/2 hours, and it will take that long to have 2 drinks, the set up just keeps things slow paced, even with the available reservation spots clearly timed to prevent any big rush.
Glad we visited, and if you want a quiet conversation and a good drink in a private space, recommend you make a reservation and give Clint a call.
