When I walked in, something about this place just told me I would instantly like it here. I had been seeing Magpie Coffee around town for some time now, with various shops carrying their beans, serving their coffee, or infusing it into spirits. But sadly have only recently been able to swing by, and I am sorry it took me so long.
This is about as basic a coffee shop as you are likely to find. Just a single converted garage space, by the look of it. A couple tables, some counter space, the roaster itself prominently visible in the back. I love the aesthetic here, including the nice little seating area they have out front.
But really, the focus should be on the coffee itself and not the decor. And let me tell you, this does not disappoint. Quite the opposite, this coffee is spectacular. I am not the most coffee-cultured guy, nor do I have a refined pallet. I judge coffees by whether I like them or not. And their brews have a rich coffee flavor but with almost no hint of bitterness to them that I could pick up. I tried it in several forms: In their drip coffee, an americano, a red eye, and a latte. All of them I very much enjoyed. These dudes seriously have their roasting and barista-ing crafts down.
The rest of the drink menu is very straightforward. Drip coffee, pour over, cold brew, espresso drinks, with a couple teas, coca and bottled water on there for good measure. The baristas can mix you just about any espresso drink you desire, so you only have to worry about what your coffee-to-dairy ratio should be. There are also a few snacks like oatmeal or pastries included, nothing major.
All in all, this is at its core a coffee shop, in that it is specifically a shop for coffee. They keep focus on where it needs to be, and I can say with certainty they might be my new favorite local roaster. I really can't think of any downsides to Magpie. The coffee is amazing, the service is very friendly and quick, and it is just a very pleasant place to enjoy a morning beverage or two. I will certainly be stopping by here more often, and I encourage anyone else in town to give them a try, too.
