20 Best Weekend Getaways in New England

"Part of the Berkshires, Great Barrington looks straight out of a Louisa May Alcott novel... See what’s going on at Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, a 1905 theater hosting everything from classic flicks to big-name bands." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Right in the town’s center is a performing art space that hosts a range of esteemed performers. Based on the retro and humble exterior, you might walk past it without realizing how impressive the marquee is, but a few recent headliners include: John Mulaney, Cecily Strong and Jane Lynch. With programming nearly every night—films, lectures, concerts, dance, comedy—you’re likely to catch something worth seeing anytime you’re in town."

Watching and listening to performers who love what they do is contagious. You can’t help but love being entertained by them. I went to hear the Dali String Quartet and I was mesmerized. As I already mentioned they love being musicians and love sharing their love with the audience. The sound quality in the Mahaiwe Theater is great for the classics. If you get a chance to go to a performance in that establishment you should go. It has an historical ambience that makes you feel as if you got to be a part of history.

First time visiting for a lovely evening to see Casablanca. Loved it! Beautiful theater with friendly staff.

Went to see Casablanca on Valentine’s Day and had so much fun! The staff were so friendly and welcoming. They also took our photos for their social media, which was really neat! I’ve been to many shows here and it’s such a historic and wonderful venue and the experiences are always very intimate. Thank you Mahaiwe for keeping the arts alive 🩷

Saw Casablanca here on Valentine's Day with my friend and it was amazing! Such friendly staff! Sat in box seats, staff took photos of me and my friend's outfits and posted on their social media which was cool! After the film when exiting staff was handing out roses to everyone! So lovely!

This is an excellent venue for opera. We have seen several Berkshire Opera productions here all of which have been terrific. The latest was Faust in Aug 2024. On our last visit we sat in the first row of the mezzanine. The acoustics were excellent as were the sight lines.

Nice smaller venue for shows. Saw Jose Gonzalez, excellent show, great acoustics. Location is great, proximity to downtown area

I havent been to the Mahaiwe since I was a kid, so I was looking forward to seeing a band from my teenage years there. The website was very clear about masking and vaccine protocol, but since we got the tickets months ago we were hoping the mask mandate would be lifted as it has been at other venues. One member in our party has breathing issues and it is difficult for them to wear a mask for prolonged, but there are no exceptions. They patrol the theater throughout the show to reprimand people. No water is allowed (another issue for those with medical problems). The acoustics weren't great, and it was very hot. Definitely one of my least favorite venues around. On a positive note the band was good, and the vaccine card check/ticket check moved along great and the staff was efficient and friendly in that section. The ushers and "mask patrol" folks were not.

Yelp
Berkshire International Film Festival: tremendous success! We saw the first run movie Thelma. Great movie in a beautifully renovated theater

Yelp
Beautiful vaudeville-era theater, SO GLAD this building has been preserved and restored! It's not ornately decorated like the Colonial in Pittsfield, but it's the perfect intimate space for enjoying a movie or small-group performance. We attended a performance of the John Pizzarelli Trio last night, and the acoustics for 3-part jazz were excellent! We'd love to take a "back stage tour" if such a thing were offered - would be really fun to see the inner-workings of this historical space! Not certain how successful the theater experience would be for someone with mobility issues, however, as there are LOTS of steps and the rows are narrowly-spaced - but other than this, the Mahaiwe is a true Great Barrington gem!

Yelp
It was on our "bucket list" to attend a performance here. The event we chose was that of John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey with special guest Bucky Pizzarelli. I don't intend to review the performance. I'd like to say how much we enjoyed the facility. While I'd never seen the theater before any restoration began, I can appreciate the effort and good work that went into bringing it to its current condition. There is not a bad seat in the house, the seats are quite comfortable, the acoustics are excellent, everything is clean, and the staff/volunteers are friendly and helpful. It is simply a wonderful space to enjoy any type of performance.

Yelp
Great theatre space! I just wish it was closer. However, for special programs we will gladly make the two hour drive out to Great Barrington. It is heartening to see this theatre restored and survive.

Yelp
I recently saw Art Garfunkle at the Mahaiwe. I mean, Art Garfunkle...there's a win right there! And he did not disappoint, but that's another story. The tickets were easy to purchase, the Mahaiwe's web site is extremely user-friendly. I was able to pick the exact seats I wanted. Prices are about average for the type of program offered. And the tickets were mailed in good time. No problem there. Finding the theater is easy, too. The marquis is highly visible from Great Barrington's Main Street. Parking was easy enough.. There's no parking right next to the theater, but we found plenty of near-by parking. Apparently Great Barrington's business concerns are tolerant of theater-goers using their parking lots. The theater itself is lovely, quaint, ornate, comfortable. After a short wait in the spacious lobby, we were allowed to find our seats. My husband and I sat in the balcony, the seats were good. From what I could see, there's not a bad seat in the house. The acoustics are good, too. Those who know Art Garfunkle's heavenly counter-tenor know the acoustics were tested. True, there's no concession stand, but we're not at the movies, are we? It's a lovely theater with good offerings. We'll go again
