"Trends hit Chicago 1.5 years late. You’d think the internet would eliminate barriers like time and space, yet here we Chicagoans are, still riding high on avocado toast. For this reason, the poke onslaught was inevitable the second bowls of raw tuna and pineapple aggressively spread from Instagram coast to Instagram coast. And while Mahalo isn't a fast-casual poke spot, it does try to cheaply take advantage of the trend in a full-blown Hawaiian themed restaurant serving poke and other traditional island dishes. As its name infers, Mahalo is Hawaiian, and they’ve gone all in with hanging surfboards, cocktails served in pineapples, and open air windows. Does the staff really need to be wearing palm tree print? Probably not, but they are, because Mahalo needs to try and convince you that you're not in between a Ragstock and an Urban Outfitters. You're in Hawaii, dammit. As far as the food, it's fine. The poke bowls are pretty typical and the salads are decent enough, but none of the fish tastes high quality and the larger cooked platters aren't very good. Overall, nothing is great, nothing is terrible, and all of it feels like a hollow attempt at Hawaiian food dressed up in a grass skirt. That said, brunch is a big letdown, which is a shame. It's not really that surprising, though, considering Mahalo is is basically the Hawaiian version of its sister restaurant, Hampton Social. We don’t hate the vibes for a casual Sunday afternoon cocktail (the outdoor rooftop is great) or when we’re feeling the urge for something moderately healthy in a trendy setting. But we don’t love it for most things. You’ll get some solid island vibes, but you won’t get any food worth writing home about. Get your Snaps in and get out. Hey, St. Louis - Aloha, and brace yourself. Poke is coming. Food Rundown Papaya Salad A tasty mix of shrimp, avocado, cashews and arugula, but the portion size is lacking for the high price tag. Big Island Pokes Your typical pokes, and any poke can be turned into a bowl with brown rice. Nothing tastes high quality and the flavors are lacking. The tuna poke is particularly disappointing and could use a healthier dose of soy. King’s Hawaiian French Toast The biggest disappointment of them all. Seems hard to go wrong with custard, berries, and syrup, but apparently you can. We left half of it on the table, which seems like a sin as far as French toast goes. It's a real disappointment that basic brunch is hit or miss. Kau Kau Ribs The kona bbq sauce in these baby back ribs is entirely too sweet and overpowering. Overall makes them not good at all. Kalua Pork Platter Slow roasted pork in banana leaf with brown rice, macaroni salad, and both kona bbq sauce and pineapple bbq sauce. More sauce is not a good thing here. It's entirely too sweet and salty. Overall, we'd stay away from the larger cooked plates. Miso Sea Bass If you do want a cooked plate, this is what we would get. The pa seared sea bass is the only thing we liked. It's basic with a sweet miso glaze." - Claire Schlafly

Mahalo is a wonderful place, I came here for brunch. Unfortunately it was raining, so we didn't get to experience the rooftop. The inside made us feel like we were in a tropical setting despite the rain. The food was delicious (very difficult to choose from the menu), and they had great bottomless mimosas.

I really wanted to like this place, but the food is just okay. Great decor and atmosphere, but I came for the food. Mahalo describes itself as a Hawaiian restaurant, but I would say it's merely Hawaiian-themed. When I asked about happy hour, I was told by the hostess who sat us that their happy hour menu was discontinued for the time being, even though their website clearly advertises happy hour Mon -Thur from 3-5 pm. It was 4pm on a Thursday, fine nbd. Our waitress went over the menu and described poke bowls as "destroyed sushi in a bowl." What an unappetizing way to describe a food item, regardless I wanted to try a few items off the menu and I love poke so her description didn't scare me off. I tried the salmon poke bowl and it was fine, but nothing spectacular that would make you want to come back for it again. Also, had the kahlua pork fried rice and that was decent but I've never had fried rice with broccoli stems and chopped red pepper. Tried to order a side of macaroni salad, a quintessential Hawaiian staple, and they were out of the pasta but offered to substitite it with soba noodles. I took a hard pass. My friend had the pork ramen bowl and she liked it. In my opinion, the food was mediocre and seems like whoever dreamed up this "Hawaiian restaurant" has only ever seen Hawaii in movies or on YouTube. This place missed the mark.

We didn't eat food, but we had a couple of drinks. The decor is super cute and overall atmosphere is awesome. Definitely recommend going here for a couple of drinks on a beautiful day. I need to come back for the food next time

Fun spot for an afternoon hangout spot. The rooftop is great and the couches are comfy. We split a couple of their big pineapple drinks and got a couple apps to share and the food was fresh n tasty. This was my first time in Wicker Park, and I'm excited to come back here again next time I'm in the area.

This place is amazing! 3 tips from me 1) check in on yelp to get a free coconut shrimp 2) get Kira as your server/hostess. She's delightful. 3) they give out free dessert if you mention it's a birthday/anniversary. This place has serious island vibes. It's like a trip straight out of any coastal area. Surfboards on the wall as decor and a cute AHOLA sign at the entrancr. Very beachy themed. It's almost like you can pretend to escape the Chicago cold for a little bit. As for the food I would definitely recommend the dip trio! So much guacamole. So much! There's also a bowl of fresh pineapples that come with it. For the main course I got the vegetarian poke. Nothing exceptional but tasty food nonetheless. The prices are reasonable for that area, I mean it is Wicker Park. They also have specials nearly every day that are worth looking into before you go. 5/5 would return.

The half price poke on Tuesdays is bomb, but honestly I don't think it's be worth it for full price. The service is friendly and we got the bowls quite fast, the rooftop was under maintenance last time but that would be so nice on a warm day! Good selection of beers, including some Florida and Hawaiian breweries, but a little overpriced for the size. Overall great spot!

This place was awesome! Healthy food and great drinks and we had an amazing waitress!! The decor is definitely the main attraction when my friend and I decided to come here- it exceeded all expectations. Maybe a light dusting of the decor would be good. They were playing awesome music as well. The ones you sing along too! Will definitely be going back I really want to try out their roof top tables!

Very beautiful place with a good atmosphere. The rooftop is small but really nice. Cocktails are sooo good and not too sweet! However, I'm very disappointed by the expensive food. We had the traditional poke and it's tasteless, as well as the veggie ramen.
