Mahari - Review - Hyde Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"African, Creole, Caribbean, Afro-Latina, and soul food dishes can all be found on Mahari’s menu. At this Hyde Park restaurant, expect suya grilled mushroom skewers and prawn and polenta with red curry, along with Carribean-spiced lamb burgers and tamarind-glazed filet mignon. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

1000/10 From the moment we walked in the energy of the ambiance and atmosphere was beautiful! Host greeted us and sat us right away. Music was on point. Decor is beautiful and well thought out. Food was AMAZING! Starters we had Salmon Cala, Sambusa Trio (all lentil), and Fennel&Apple Salad. Literally every single item satisfied every taste bud. Omg. Entrees we had Suya Mushroom stuff plantain which I never had plantain in that way and it was absolutely delish!!! We also had Pollo Frijoles and let me tell you! The seasoning on the chicken, the okra, beans rice! Chefs kiss! The side of okra was also so amazing. Dessert we had Ginger sorbet and Monmon bread Pudding . Omgosh!!! So GOOD . Too GOOD!! My drink was heavenly! I had the Cafe Con Platano! I drank the first one so fast I had to order another literally within 10 mins of receiving the first on . I’m strict with reviews. So for me to leave a review where I have NOTHING to complain about is rare! Service was great! Bathroom was nice and clean! RUN to try Mahari and I guarantee it will become one of your favorite restaurants! Thank me later!

By far one of the best experiences I've had this far in 2025... I treated my wife and mother in law to a Mother's Day brunch and everyone was beyond pleased with the brunch menu and food selections (we've chose), the environment and ambiance, and most importantly the "STAFF." From the moment we walked through their doors we were greeted and welcomed with open arms. Therefore, it was truly a blessing to experience top notch, high quality customer service throughout our visit. EVERYONE WAS GREAT!!! The food!!! The food!!! There weren't any complaints from the Thompson Family! We ordered the Cinnamon Toast Naan, the Louisiana BBS Shrimp & Grits, Suya Steak & Eggs, and the Bayou Strata... All of these dishes were great from the plating presentation, portion size, taste and flavor of the meal. The drinks, I ordered the Smoke on the Water a crafty blend of mezcal, reposado, watermelon guava puree, habanero bitters, Palo Santo agave, and lime... A top notch highly recommend beverage... The ladies embraced the Ube Cafe which is a blend of dark Caribbean rum, coffee liqueur, espresso, Ube coconut cream, tiki bitters, and nutmeg, and my daughter had a special lemonade crafted for her... Top Notch!!! My wife and the Director of Community & Culture (Mr. Johnson) are friends and encouraged us to return to sample the dinner menu... Without question we'll be back, not just for the food but to enjoy the dining experience with the staff.

Overall solid vibe! We went on a Thursday without a reservation. Food was pretty good. The Salmon Cala (salmon+rice fritters with a sweet mango chutney and mixed greens), Lamb Burger (with the sweetest pineapple on top, so delicious), and Bread Pudding (topped with a beautiful purple sweet cream) were our favorites. I also enjoyed my Sobolo juice. The music was right and the ambience as well. It is a bit crowded with tables and we found the noise level a bit disruptive. $120 for two including tip

My partner and I had the opportunity to dine at this hidden gem in Hyde Park this weekend , my partner and I were celebrating our Birthday’s . The food was absolutely amazing, the atmosphere was fantastic, perfect for a date. The atmosphere was warm and romantic, the host and waitress provided great service. They were very welcoming, and made us feel comfortable. It’s really a plus, when you can get good food, great service, and a great atmosphere. And you don’t have to travel far, if you live in Hyde Park. The Chef also came out and spoke with us to ensure everything was good, we made sure to thank him for the great food. If you visit, make sure you try the Prawns and Polenta, Stuffed plantains, Pollo N' Frijoles, the Peach Salad W Salmon, Seared Okra, and for dessert the Bread pudding and Sorbet . Everything was delicious!!! We will definitely be returning to try more on the menu.

Went today without reservation and was greeted and seated immediately. Service was excellent and the ambiance was beautiful. I started off with a mocktail sobolo which was excellent with hints of cinnamon and clover. I then asked chef Rah what he will recommend me to try for small and large plates as a first timer. He recommended the salmon Cala and even went into details on the inspiration behind the dish. It was light fluffy salmon type fritter that was paired with a salad very tasty. Then, he recommended for main dish the pollo n frijoles which was very flavorful, the chicken was seasoned well and paired with a bean stew and basmati rice with a spicy kick from the pineapple sauce. Definitely reminded me of my time in Cartagena. For desert, I had the bread pudding, it was absolutely delicious. I felt like I was back on Frenchman street. Will recommend this restaurant. Excellent job on the presentation!

I've been to Mahari twice now and brought two groups of people visiting the University of Chicago. It's easily the best restaurant in Hyde Park and one of the best in the city as a whole. The flavors and presentation are phenomenal. The ambience is welcoming, elegant, and warm. And the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Everything I've tried from the appetizers has been fantastic: the mushroom satay, Berbere honey naan, and the salmon cala. From the main dishes, I had the stuffed plantain (half beef, half mushroom) the first time, and the Graze N Bayou the second time. Both were amazing, but the Graze N Bayou steals the show with its delicious pairing of filet mignon and perfectly cooked salmon, topped off with a yam paste and pistachio garnish (my mouth sings just thinking about it). The Sandia cheesecake is light and fluffy with a subtle hint of watermelon. And the sorrel ginger sorbet is the perfect mix of sweet, sour, and spicy. I can't wait to go back and try more items from the menu.

The food was delicious, the service excellent, and the ambience among the best I’ve experienced. I enjoyed it so much that I went twice in one month—first with my daughter, and then again a few weeks later with my girlfriends.

I dined at Mahari last night with my friend and her mother-in-law, and the experience was phenomenal - exquisite food, friendly service and lively but intimate atmosphere. Food - we ordered the yassa wings and kutkoota sambusa trio to share; I ordered the stuffed plantain, and my friend and her MIL shared the prawns and polenta. All of it was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked - great combination of flavors without being overpowering. Service - Our server's name was Love, and she was incredibly friendly and sociable. She was able to answer all of our questions about the menu. The Director of Community and Culture, Magic, came over to our table and spent some time explaining the decor of the restaurant and everything that went into the design and textures in the restaurant. When Executive Chef, Rah, came out, my friend's MIL immediately stood up to give him a hug because she was so impressed with all of the food. Atmosphere - while the music a little louder than I would have liked, the decor in the restaurant is stunning and obviously well-thought out. I am so happy that Hyde Park has this new addition to its fine dining community. I definitely plan to return, and I will be encouraging my friends to visit as well.

Yelp
Even though I haven't experienced the full Journey of exploring the foods of the African diaspora which Mahari promises, I experienced a few very tasty light bites that have me yearning to return STAT! After leaving local Southside dive bar, a couple of friends and I were a little hungry. Since I had berm dying to go to Mahari since they opened in January, I suggested this Hyde Park eatery. They were super down so we made our way. As we entered Mahari, I was immediately enveloped in the warm, inviting vibe and stylish decor. For a Monday night, it was pretty busy and luckily we were seated right away. Our server was extremely accommodating and made us feel welcome. He went over the menu and we opted for the Maharitas, a tantalizing take on a classic margarita with mezcal, blanco tequila mango, scotch bonnet agave, ginger and lime juice. We also ordered the Haitian wings, salmon cala and the fennel and apple salad. The salmon fritters had the perfect amount of seasoning and crunch, the salad was thoroughly refreshing and the wings were to die for! There was enough for all of us to share and we were happy. Mahari took over the space that was once home to French bistro, La Petite Folie and what an amazing replacement it is. I'll be back sooner rather than later!

Yelp
I'll start by saying I'm eager to go back Mahari on a Saturday once I heard that they'll be featuring some cuisines from the diaspora that I really like. We got to Mahari roughly a week after they opened. We heard about it right before opening and booked a reservation that same day. If this is how they're doing after a week, good things are on the way. The team - The servers and staff were all great. It was a little odd the host told us our table wasn't ready (we were less than 5 mins late for the reservation), when they had three 2-tops open. After an odd minute, we were seated at our table. No worries. Just odd. Server team Our server was very friendly and helpful as we thought about our orders. Again, for a new spot, it'll get better but taking our order on a electronic device with one hand (awkwardly) while holding dishes she cleared the table next to us wasn't a good look. Just take your time and do it right - go put your dishes away and come back (I'll come back to this). Plus, I don't want to stare at dirty plates while I'm thinking about ordering. They were also not super attentive on the water refills (usually, places that are humming don't let your glass go below 1/2). Mine got empty and stayed that way fro a while. Food: Sambusas - Excellent. I'd go back just for these. They were quite taste and the sauce on the plate had the perfect amount of heat Salmon Cala - Also really great. The rice inside was good and added an interesting texture to it. They also had the right heat and the chutney was a nice touch to add some sweetness to the overall flavor. The clementine didn't make any sense and this dish could do without it. It's an odd add. Yucca Fries - They were fine, but needed to come with some kind of dipping sauce. They were just plain, which means dry and starchy. (plus I had no water!) Stuffed plantain - my partner said it was really good (veggie version, no cheese). Bread pudding - Also really good. I'm not a huge fan of it, in general, but this was great. the table next to our said it was the best bread pudding ever! The issue (which they made "right" as best they could: The Whole snapper - This was the big issue. The food generally came fast so it was odd when my fish didn't come out with the plantain entree. After a few minutes, we asked about it and were told it was coming. 15 mins later? Nothing. My partner finished before my fish came. When it did come, the flavor on the broth was great, but the fish was undercooked and had to go back (raw in the center - which is hard for a thin fish). Another 15-20 later, a new order came out (a much smaller fish, but that was fine). The broth tasted a little different, but was fine. I feel like they rushed the first one because it was missed in the order. Our server apologized and said "it was ALL my fault", so I'm left thinking she didn't enter it correctly (see the juggling the device above). Either way, it was all good and they actually cared, and were very VERY apologetic. All good. The fish was good, but came with NOTHING. No rice. No veggies. Just fish on a plate. everything else came as a meal. My advice? Throw a few yucca fries on the plate because that broth needed to be consumed! Two other notes: * They had a birthday in the house, and the community feel was dope. They are really building a "community center" there. * The sound system could use a bit of an upgrade. We were right below a speaker in the ceiling. Th music selection was fine, but the speaker was distractingly "tinny' (like a loudspeaker) and had no bass. Given the focus of the restaurant, you don't need "concert bass" (like a club) , but you gotta have a little bit more warmth to the sound. This was a miss they should fix. As I said. I'm looking forward to going back! I like what they got going over there!

Yelp
Delighted to have Mahari as one of my restaurant favorites! Interesting, well-seasoned options from the African diaspora: I especially loved the salmon/rice balls, scallops, and mushroom skewers. Each of these options has a great, flavorful sauce without being heavy. Lovely, lovely staff. They are well-trained and work together to ensure a great customer experience. Our server, "Love," was attentive, kind, and "familiar like family" while maintaining professionalism. Colorful, cozy decor. Beautiful handmade tables and chairs. I love the beautiful ceiling artwork of fabric behind the light fixtures. I occasionally moved to the African and Ampiano beats that played in the background. The music was loud enough to enjoy, and while being able to have conversations with your dining party. Check out Mahari! You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
We paid a ticket for an event with a tasting menu and entertainment that was incorrectly advertised. We were disappointed in that but pushed through. This is a new restaurant so I will always show grace as they work out the kinks. With that being said, I appreciated the theme menu and limited options so that I could sample everything. For me the best item was the lamb burger, full of flavors that developed more with each bite. The picklez gave it a kick and the grilled slice of pineapple was the chef's kiss. The Yuka fries were a great compliment with a touch of salt. My vegan hubby had the vegan soup which was very small for $15 but full of flavor. It was a comforting sample with gifts of cubed sweet potato or squash, not sure but we both loved the flavor. Now the restaurant is absolutely beautiful with soo many details that quickly draw your eyes. The music is perfect with the lighting and food smells. It was a very lively Hyde Park atmosphere great with cocktails. Based on the concept and the high attention to detail of the aesthetics, I was excited to taste the food but was disappointed in most items. I look forward to returning in a few months as they grow out of the new opening stages.

Yelp
Discover this newly black owned restaurant on instagram! I was walking around enjoying the sights of the restaurant. It bumped into staff. They stated that the restaurant hasn't even been open a month! Im truly impressed ! It definitely giving intimate dining vibe. If I had to describe it, I would say it's an african/ caribbean infusion. They have a lot of dishes with some heat and spice to it.If that's your thing! For appetizers, we went with the chicken wings. For main courses, we both had the dish with the filet Mignon and salmon with a creole. My husband and I do have some dietary restrictions, and they were able to tell us what we were able to eat and tailored additions to our liking, and even bring some extra sauces . Our weight staff me was named, Love and she was absolutely amazing. Love was very patient with us. She went inside to ask the kitchen questions for us. She checked on how everything was prepared and let them know about our restrictions and gave us amazing recommendations. She kept checking with us to make sure everything was to our liking! Amazing experience we left smile happy and satisfied! I was informed that the menu does change. And I can't wait to come back and try something different!

Yelp
Food was great! Atmosphere is really nice. Staff was extremely hospitable. Gave us a lot of great information about the layout of the restaurant. A birthday well celebrated.

Yelp
Really good service for the place to be new and to have a different style of food I think it will last but there are a few tweaks needed the salmon rice ball needed more flavor and the Haitian wings needed more spice.

Yelp
Mahari has amazing flavors of African and Caribbean fusion. The service was amazing, shout out to my waitress Love, she was amazing and very informative about the menu. The vibe of the restaurant is lively and almost feels like you're at a family members house. I highly recommend the Haitian Hot wings, the Kutkoota Sambusa, and Suya Mushrooms

Yelp
Was excited about trying this new place out near me. Went there last night about 8:30 and the doors were locked. Someone cracked the door and said "sorry we are closed," even though the door said they closed at 10 and people were inside eating. I walked right next door and had THE BEST MEAL and Mikki was THE BEST server!! When we walked in and asked what time they closed they said 9PM because they were closing early but they would still seat us. Talk about hospitality. So the moral to the story is eat next door @AscioneBistro. Mahari gets a thumbs down for me

Yelp
Mahari is just what Hyde park needed, a great place to eat and an exceptional staff to complement the food. As they were celebrating a customer's birthday, they say : "We are not above you, we are not below you, we are right here with you." I felt that! I felt like I was apart of a family and dinner was about to be served! Did I mention the drinks? A MAZ ING! If you want ALL your taste buds tickled and a great vibe, please head over to Mahari and experience culture, great food, a family atmosphere accompanied by exceptional service. 3 thumbs up and I only have 2!
