Where To Eat On The Near Main Line - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Maido! in Ardmore is a casual Japanese lunch counter inside the Japanese grocery store of the same name. Order at the counter for excellent donburi, bowls of udon, and real okonomiyaki. Don’t miss grab-and-go bento boxes and onigiri as well as a huge selection of bottled beverages and snacks from Japan, both on the restaurant and store side of the space." - jonathan deutsch

Maido! A Marketplace of Japan - Review - Ardmore - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"It seems like we have every kind of Japanese restaurant in Philly, from casual ramen shops like Terakawa or Tataki to whole-paycheck-but-worth-it omakase experiences like Royal Sushi or Ogawa Sushi and Kappo. But the Japanese restaurant in shortest supply is the casual lunch counter—the Japanese equivalent of the diner, where office workers and commuters grab a quick udon, donburi, or tonkatsu while waiting for their train or on a lunch break. Ardmore’s Maido, inside the kawaii Japanese grocery store of the same name, has just the kind of lunch counter we want more of. We love their okonomiyaki, katsudon, and all their comforting udon soups. Order at the counter and grab some of the (limited) seating surrounding the open kitchen. Stop in for lunch in between errands at Suburban Square, or take out a bento to level-up your brown bag lunch. Food Rundown Bento Boxes For those who are too busy or overwhelmed to decide what to get for lunch, two sizes of pre-made bento boxes are available. While the menu changes daily, we’ve had one with rice, grilled salmon, teriyaki chicken, kabocha squash, boiled potatoes, and pickles. Grab one on your way to work and make your sad-salad colleagues jealous. photo credit: Jonathan Deutsch Okonomiyaki A savory pancake stuffed with your choice of pork, shrimp, vegetables or a mix of all (we recommend the mix) and topped with sweet okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayo (eggier than most, and with MSG) and bonito flakes is a must order to share. photo credit: Jonathan Deutsch Donburi Donburi is the catchall term for rice bowls. Maido offers five—pork cutlet, chicken and egg, chicken teriyaki, egg, and tempura shrimp and veggies. The katsudon, a tonkatsu breaded pork cutlet simmered in dashi and onions and topped with a scrambled egg and scallions is our favorite. Be sure to ask for togarashi to add to your taste. Udon Thick udon noodles in a dashi, soy and mirin broth are pure comfort. For extra indulgence, get the tempura udon where the shrimp adds a flavorful oil slick. You’ll thank us. photo credit: Jonathan Deutsch" - Jonathan Deutsch

I love going to Maido! I always get as many onigiri (rice calls wrapped in seaweed) as I can! Then I enjoy an amazing lunch at the restaurant side - usually okonomiyaki (my mom called it "Japanese pizza"!) or yakisoba (fried noodles). The lunch is always enjoyed with a complimentary glass of mugicha (barley tea). Then we end the visit with a trip through the grocery store part of Maido! We get snacks, frozen foods, drinks, and an assortment of Japanese ingredients. It's always a super fun way to spend some time with family & friends! We also enjoy getting our special osechi ryori (special Japanese New Year's Day foods). It's an annual tradition. Maido! is awesome, and I love the Totoro statue out front! 🙂

OMG this is the best little Japanese store/restaurant in this area! It's a very authentic experience for me! me and my husband and my kids loved the food and the snacks we bought! The people are friendly and polite! Price for the quality of food you get is reasonable! I am gonna be a regular here! It's a must visit!

Google
Wonderful place to feel real Japan around Philly. They got a lot of good fresh groceries and Japanese products. You should visit if you’re into Japanese culture. Btw there’s a small restaurant and they make authentic Japanese food like udon, yakisoba, onigiri, etc.

Google
Wonderful Japanese eatery and market! We love their okonomiyaki and katsu curry, and the takoyaki and onigiri are also fantastic. Friendly service, a great place for lunch or dinner. Also has a great market for Japanese gifts, cooking goods, beauty products, and snacks.

Upon entering, a customer (don't even know if she was a real customer or staff pretending to be one) stared at me like I was wearing nothing. Her disdain for someone entering the store was palpable. What kind of customers does this place bring in? Staff was busy taking a picture of a shirt probably for the Instagram. And so many staff members in the restaurant area. More staff than customers on a weekday afternoon, fine. Everything in stock is easily available now online or in Center City. I think this place is very niche for the area it is located. I didn't buy anything and left. Brick and mortar small businesses I usually patronize but this isn't niche anymore.

Update: the window facing lancaster ave, where the tall chairs are, is splattered with food spit. Please clean that up and the sign as well. It's been looking disgusting for months now. I'm updating to 2 stars until it gets cleaned. We love eating here but the lack of cleanliness is making the eating experience less desirable... please keep it clean for the children! This place is fantastic! If you haven't tried their tempura udon, go there and do so. For every $500 you spend, you get a $10 coupon. Check out their market next door and grab yourself a bag of baby crabs snacks!

Google
Great staff, tasty food and solid options! Their food is just a bit overpriced at $15 for a basic small rice bowl (katsudon, curry, etc.). I needed 2 bowls to fill me but could have eaten 3.

Google
I love this little store/eatery! My only problem with it is that it's not close enough for me to visit often! The one down side of moving a couple years back is that Maido is now further away! I love going here to pick up snacks I can't get anywhere else. And the food! I dream about it sometimes. I miss the katsu curry, rice balls, and gyoza I used to get here. I will come back one day! Ive also recommended this place to a couple other people whom I brought to eat here. They all love it as well.

Yelp
Food: 10/10, highly recommended the yakisoba! Portion was very generous! Service: You order at the counter and your order is called for you to pick up. Cashier was friendly and efficient. Ambiance: The space is small with limited seating but the open kitchen is wonderful. The market is connected and stocked with the best products.

Yelp
This little store is so fun! They have excellent products! Their hot food isn't bad either!

Yelp
It's not bad but it's not great. As someone who has been going to Asian markets all her life, there's a few things I want to mention. If this is your first ever Asian market, you're going to love it--as my niece did. She felt like she was in a wonderland! I think this is a great start for what else is out there, but I don't see the hype that some people I know were raving about. Nonetheless, I came, I saw, I supported, but I haven't been back, and I won't be. PARKING This place doesn't have its own parking lot. It's either metered street parking or metered parking lots. Sure you can wait until after 4pm and it'll be free, but then you're competing with everyone else for a spot who's thinking the same thing. I went earlier in the day, didn't mind the meters as I found it reasonably priced. Parked in the Schauffele Plaza parking lot. Had lots of empty spaces. It's 2 hours max, which is enough if you're just going to Maido. Maido is across the street from this lot. THE STORE ITSELF Maido is SUPER small! And everything runs pretty pricey, but that's a given because of basic economic concepts. There's a demand, so they raise the price to make a profit. The shelves felt kind of bare when I went, maybe I just went on a bad day? I'm not sure. But there are a lot of selections and choices that you'll also find in any other Asian market in Philly or in the tristate area for that matter. The stationery is a very small section, just one corner of the back wall, that's it. Still cute. But you really won't find that much. It's very basic. For me, Japanese stationery is a huge love of mine, so when I hear there's a Japanese store, I always go straight to the stationery and judge it based on that. I don't really care for snacks, and I do my food shopping at HMart. OTHER MENTIONS The area itself around Maido is very condensed also. Lots of traffic, foot traffic & car traffic. Like I mentioned, parking can become an issue depending on when you go as there are lots of other shops and restaurants nearby. OVERALL It's taken me years to come check this place out because I knew the parking, the congestion, and the fact it's so small i wasn't going to be too thrilled with it. But I was picking up my niece for the day and thought she'd enjoy it, and she did. She did a little haul for her friends, but for someone who is grown and can drive themselves around, this wouldn't be my first pick or recommendation. I can't talk about the food because I didn't eat here, but there is a small area to eat in. Hope that helps!

Yelp
I'm chuckling to myself because I went to Maido two years ago and ordered the same thing I ordered today, coincidentally, a bento box. And I literally have the same comments and feedback this time around as last lol. Today, I ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box, and my partner ordered oyako don. The chicken was well dressed with teriyaki sauce; however, the pickled sides didn't complement the chicken well enough to delight the senses nor provide the acidity to counter the hearty-ness. My partner, on the other hand, loved his order and kept raving about how warm and comforting it is. I do agree, but the price of the chicken, egg bowl quite pricey. We loved the refreshing sparkling yuzu drink. Service is courteous and efficient, and the store was bustling with people on a Sunday afternoon. Nevertheless, we both had a hearty, filling meal that ultimately satisfies the stomach.

Yelp
Ok yes you can get a lot of the same stuff at other Asian stores maybe for cheaper, but... there are absolutely things you cannot find anywhere else here. And that's the appeal for me! Plus it seems like a small locally owned business, which makes sense to support if you care about that. My kids lost their little baby minds at the cool drinks and specialty candy. I loved finding powdered ready to use dashi on the shelf!!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly Atmosphere! Very cool and yummy snacks + drinks. Cool stationary. A lot of Sanrio Merch and Stickers.

Yelp
I like the authenticity of the place. Food took some time. The bento box was disgusting. Never getting it again. Vegetables seemed old and food was not well seasoned. The egg and rice dish on the other hand was spectacular. This was well mixed with the curry. Yummy

Yelp
It's a bit far for regular visits but I always look forward to trips to MAIDO. They have Asian produce and specialty items that you won't find elsewhere. I like to pick up mackerel, veggies, amazake, dashi soup broth, cooking sake, mirin, spaghetti and roe sauce, and the waffle matcha ice cream sandwiches. The restaurant has delicious authentic food like takoyaki and udon, and a yakisoba okonomiyaki hybrid I want to try next time. Despite the small size I've never had a problem getting seating. Definitely join their email list for recipes, festivities, and product announcements!

Beeg R.

Yelp
We came in for a quick afternoon snack and got the pork kansu rice. The egg on top was amazing. The pork was tender. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
Probably the most authentic Japanese market in the Philly area. Pricing for the restaurant is fair. My favorite thing is by far the bento boxes. The market itself is quite expensive, so I would recommend going to Hmart for basic goods

Yelp
Ok, now I'm very angry. I called in advance to ask this time if they had gyudon. Person on the phone said yes. Drove like 45 min (came from jersey this time) to get here and the cafe people said no since they're having supply chains issues and that they have not had it. She was very nice/apologetic about it, even though it wasn't her fault. She wasn't the one who picked up my phone call. Some staff are just very misinformed. I wouldn't have made that trip and gone straight home to UC instead. These guys could have told me that yesterday and/or this morning and now I'm too irritated with them to buy anything else yesterday/today and wont be making the trip to come back anytime soon. I was fine letting yesterday go and write it off as a "snooze you loose." Yesterday I was passing by anyway coming back from office in Wayne, but today was full blown out of the way. Yesterday I didn't have time to shop around, and today I just refused. I tried to be supportive of a small mom-pop shop but not after this and everything being overlroved and tiny portions. I can get most of their stuff at an Asian supermarket in NJ for like half the cost. Please do not misinform your customers. Some transparency wouldn't hurt you. Now I won't even call in the future to ask because now I won't believe anything you say.

Yelp
Great location on Lancaster Ave in Ardmore. MAIDO is a Japanese grocery store that offers packaged foods, premade, and made to order menu options. Friendly service and my order was ready within 10 minutes. The tempura appetizer was a battered onion, red and green pepper, shrimp, and potato served with sesame oil. This perfect snack or light lunch came out to $15!

Yelp
I find this place overrate for some reason. It has a great selection of Japanese goods but a lot of the items could also be found at your local Asian grocery store. For a Japanese store in PA, it's decent but if you compare it in different states, it's lacking in selection. The food at the food court was also mediocre. We got the Takoyaki, rice balls, and Okonomiyaki. The quality was terrible - barely any ingredient in any of these food. It was mostly rice & batter. The takoyaki and okonomiyaki were also very soft and soggy - and that was us eating immediately at the store. It's food court quality food. The bento boxes are hit or miss because you don't know what they will have available for the day.
google avatar

Caroline C.

Yelp
I've visited Maido twice, and had a good experience both times. Staff takes health and safety very seriously. The restaurant takes utility into account, but it's still a place you could sit down and have a nice conversation with someone. I tend to get the tempura, which is very good.

Rod M.

Yelp
Fair. Not enough inventory. Limited selections. Nicely done, though. Ok for repeat items buying.
google avatar

Julianna K.

Yelp
Our favorite place to go for lunch bentos. We love that they have a medium and large size, and they make them fresh daily. It changed every day and can be chicken teriyaki, fried shrimp, beef teriyaki, salmon, and sometimes even saba. You can just leave the bento boxes there and you can also get free barley tea!
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today after two years. The okonomiyaki that I ordered was not quite as good as the last time that we visited but still good. They have a large assortment of grab and go prepared foods and we bought some to take home which were very good. The store is very well stocked with all things Japanese, I love to peruse and pick up some favorites that I was only able to purchase when I was in Japan a few years ago.

Yelp
Maido is hands-down a local favorite! I've been a customer since their former location in Narberth, and the quality of food, service, and organization has remained superb over the years. Some of my favorite items are the bento boxes as well as their onigiri, for they are pre-packaged/prepared, serving as a solid choice whenever you're in a rush. The marketplace at Maido is also wonderful, where items range from fresh produce, stationery (my favorite part!), and yummy Asian snacks that you don't see very often in the area. In terms of service, it has an efficient self-seating/buzzer/staff clean up system which makes the process much easier for customers. The staff are so polite and kind, and they always make us smile!
google avatar

Rina D.

Yelp
A cute market and restaurant/food area. They're doing really great during the pandemic, limiting their seating and making sure the place is sanitary! The market has stationary, snacks, and home goods. The menu is pretty limited in the food section, and takes a bit longer than expected for the food to come out. The food tastes great but I thought it is a bit overpriced for its small/medium sized portion!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
10/5 Stars. This is the closest you'll get to a good Japanese dish from overseas. The food warms my soul. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The snacks are affordable overall. Their Katsu curry is to die for. Happy to come again! I love their Onigiri so much and wished it was served more. Superb place!

Yelp
Heard about this spot randomly when talking about cool grocery stores near Philly. While it's a bit of a hike away, the shop had a few interesting snacks and food items, and the restaurant had the most amazing obento and rice balls. For the shop portion, there were only a few items, but many sauces, candies, frozen items, and drinks that I have never seen before. I got a chili sauce to try, can't wait! Now, the restaurant: For $14, you get a delicious piece of salmon, some teriyaki chicken, veggies (cabbage, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans) and rice. I also got to try the tuna and salmon onigiri, stuffed rice balls. It was filling, even for two people, and they have some open tables with contact tracing to make sure everyone is safe and in the know. Loved that they left a full, cold pitcher of water on the table. Very efficient and tasty. Would love to come back for the rice bowls, katsu, or another specialty dish of the day!
google avatar

KS T.

Yelp
Great market and made to order food. Some items at the market are definitely overpriced compared to places like H Mart (for the same item). The made to order food is pretty good but also slightly overpriced.

Yelp
Maido! has seen better days. The "Marketplace of Japan," was our destination after an hour drive from Bucks. We were looking for quality Japanese noodles, ceramic bowls and vinegar unavailable at the Asian supermarket where we normally shop. To our surprise and disappointment there was little of anything on the shelves, and it looked like their inventory had not been replenished in weeks or longer. Same was true of fresh produce, where most bins were bare. What was going on here?! They literally had nothing we came for. So, we decided to make lemonade from this sour experience, and went over to their restaurant operation in the same space and ordered a few things at the cashier before sitting on stools at a high eating counter facing onto Lancaster Avenue. The Karaage (fried chicken) and Okonomiyaki (veggie omelet) were prepared in their open kitchen and I picked them up when the buzzer alerted me everything was ready. The chicken was deep fried from frozen plastic bag. It was not crisp, nor crunchy, but quite oily. The taste of the Karaage powder was there, but the combo of white and dark pieces left much to be desired. They need to improve the quality of those prefab chicken tenders. The Okonomiyaki was better with cabbage, scallion, pickled ginger, yam, bonito and a decent sauce, but the veggie option had little taste despite the ingredients. We finished about half and took the rest home. Its fate has not been determined. At $28+ with two tea bags and hot water, we expected better. Not sure what the future holds for Maido!, but its continued presence in Ardmore does not appear assured.

Yelp
Fine food and nice prices. Good Japanese store and it's a small but pleasant store. Convenient if you're in the area and from my experience the service is fine as the workers are nice!
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
A cute store, once of its kind in the area! It's not easy to find a Japanese store like this, there's a restaurant side as well, and they have takeout available if you are craving some Japanese cuisine! The market offers a variety of items from fresh fruits and vegetables to exotic drink, snacks and miscellaneous condiments and beauty products. You can also find small decorations and PENS! Why did I say PENS? Japanese PENS are different! Go try it for yourself! However I do think there's too much empty spaces on shelves which is an eyesore. Okay, now I have to go hangout with My Neighbor Totoro, Ciao!

Yelp
Lots of "Japanese", Asian fusion, Chinese restaurants that have a Japanese menu items. Some are are 5 stars and some are 1 stars. But if you want the real ingredients, cooked the traditional way and Japanese culture/mannerism Maido is your place. It's a cafe with Japanese diner/street food. Japanese culture is very friendly and accommodating-and very particular in presentation my tray had a plastic condiment cup to place my tea bag. My karaage ( Japanese fried chicken) was perfectly cooked - batter lightly and moist chicken- not greasy. The side of small udon hit the spot on the chilly day - dashi(soup was not salty or diluted ( yes some of the other restaurants don't make the broth properly) it's all about the broth.Added was Wakame( sea weed) yes it should be in there. - I'll be back to try the Tempura ( take note its made the traditional way- not in panko). Can't wait to have the Takoyaki. So much to eat so little time! 5 STARS-hands down Maido - please keep it going the Japanese tradition in Ardmore since my Grandma has passed ( she made awesome Japanese food ) and NYC is 2 hours away to get to Little Tokyo!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
The lunch special is pretty reasonable for what you get. I ordered the chicken curry. The curry itself is underwhelming. The sauce was very bland. There isn't much going on with it. The soup was very deeply savory. The broth was outstanding. The noodles were well executed: firm and yet chewy enough. The salad was fresh and the dressing was a nice balance of sweet and acidic.
google avatar

Janine A.

Yelp
1st time here. Had takoyaki & seaweed salad. Never heard if Takoyki, its a snack of wheat balls & octopus. What a delightfully different surprise. Seaweed salad was also good. I will have to try the curry next time, nice clean environment & friendly service.

Yelp
I love Maido. It's a grocery store with a restaurant attached to it! I started off with a salmon Bento and my friend got udon noodles as well as katsu Don. Everything was freshly made and hot and so delicious. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. You have to give your name because the pandemic is still going on and they do contact tracing. So they were only three people in the whole restaurant including me. We were spaced out and you have a limited time that you can hang out with your food. Afterwards I went shopping to pick up all my Japanese necessities. They have everything from stationary to refrigerated and frozen items as well as produce. I was to see if shiso leaves and kaboucha pumpkin. Lots of paripari crunchy snacks and sweets! Do you need moisturizing masks? They have a nice selection! It's very nice to find authentic Japanese good. I'm very happy to find this gem. It's great to be able to have actual Japanese food that has the authentic taste of Japan and I can watch Japanese NHK TV!

Justice C.

Yelp
I was happy to randomly discover this place when I lost my way one day and walking. I really loved the selections. I wish I wasn't broke because I wanted to buy more things. It was a bit pricey but overall, a beautiful place.
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
This place serves an important purpose in the location, but for good Asian groceries and food, you're much better off going to Hmart. The food was middle of the road, and a bit overpriced. The groceries were way too expensive. I know Hmart up-prices their products, but Maido goes three steps further. This feels more like a hobby shop to gawk at Asian products rather than a place I would want to buy groceries. Now I get that it has its marketable function, but I would skip this spot if you're actually looking to purchase something other than out of curiosity.

Yelp
Great Japanese market in Ardmore! My mom took me here while I was visiting from NYC (I have my own neighborhood Japanese market so I wasn't expecting to be super impressed by this place, but I really was!) They have a kitchen where they sell bento, udon, curry, onigiri, takoyaki, and more. There's a fairly significant grocery portion with veggies, snacks, dried foods, ice cream, etc. the most exciting part was their non grocery items. From here I bought incense, a really cute Japanese style mug, a notebook, soy sauce plates, and chopsticks. There are also masks, pens of all kinds, socks, rice bowls and bento containers and shiba tote bags, and on and on. One of the best things about this place (for me at least) was that many items were significantly cheaper than the grocery store I visit in NYC. Part of that is I'm sure a virtue of location, but still it was nice to feel like I was getting bargains. I had the tempura udon here as well and was really impressed. The noodles aren't anything special but the soup is light and tasty and the tempura was done perfectly. That was all I tried but if I were to return I'd certainly come for lunch again. Overall I was super impressed and would happily return for food, snacks, and various cute / fun items that are hard to find outside of Mitsuwa in NJ or Japan.

Yelp
The market has a pretty good variety of products - all Japanese, some I haven't seen anywhere since I lived in Japan (I was 8-11yrs old) back in the late 60's & early 70's. Had in stock something's I haven't had in 50 yrs. The restaurant food was very good with the service very friendly and considerate. Had yakisoba which was excellent. Glad I found this place and I will be sure to drive the 90 miles to get there!

Yelp
Wooooooow I'm in so much shock at how terribly-made the food here is yet how people still eat here! Yes it's authentic, but just because you have no competition doesn't mean you can disgrace Japanese cuisine. We arrived 6, didn't get to order until 6:15 because of the 3 whole people ahead of us, and didn't get our food until 6:50. The portions were so TINY I was done eating by 6:59, which is surprising considering how tough and hard to chew their katsu (chicken jerky) was. No joke, I've had katsu probably at 50+ different locations and this one here is hands down, no debate, the WORST I've ever had. It's on par with public school lunch cafeteria food. Okinomoyaki was decently flavored, but filling was mostly batter and for $12, there should be more than 2 pieces of meat that are 1 cm big. This was probably the worst tasting meals I've had in the past few years, but I can't get myself to give them 1 star bc they are nice, and the store has some items that are not available in regular grocery stores.

Yelp
Flavorful japanese fast food but the prices are ridiculous for what you get. $15 for a tiny bowl of chicken curry with brown rice. They give you two tiny (and I mean tiny) pieces of chicken and a few other vegetables. Its a shame because the curry is delicious but at that price for basically rice and curry sauce, skip it. The other dishes which are also very good arent as much of a rip off but still, way overpriced for what they are. And skip the pork dishes. The pork is dry and tough.

Yelp
I love maido!! They have amazing snacks, ramen, and food court. I love to get their onigiri. I love all their flavors from the salmon to the tuna but my favorite would be the spicy salmon with mayo. Yum!! I got the stir fry udon once. I have to say it was a major disappointment. The sauce was not good at all. I couldn't even finish it. Overall, I like to go there from some snacks especially the chips, ramen selections, green tea items such as the candy, and the onigiri. The only downside is the location is pretty far and I don't go there often.

Yelp
What a cute little place! I might move to PA just so I could be near MAIDO! Maido is a little market + a little restaurant in one area. It is an awesome place to find super unique asian foods and knick-knacks. On the other side is where you can experience Japanese cuisine in an environment that makes you feel like you've stepped into Japan. Definitely among my must visits when going to PA!

Yelp
I've been here twice with my boyfriend because he LOVES their katsu curry. I've only ever had their shumai ($5.50) and their katsu curry ($15). I would not recommend the shumai (it tasted overcooked/too mushy and not worth the price). I would highly recommend the katsu curry though! I love that the curry incorporates vegetables like carrots and potatoes. It is a bit on the pricier side, compared to other katsu curries I've had. We never had a wait for seating and the wait for food is about 10 minutes. Can't wait to go back and try new items (I'd especially like to try their tempura udon, curry udon, korokke, karaage, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and katsu don - based on pictures!) and also hope to have time to grocery shop a bit!

Yelp
I wish I could give it no stars! How much more racist could you be? Soon as me and my children walked in a woman was RIGHT behind us, no type of greeting or anything acting like she was "cleaning the shelves". We go over to the restaurant and it's the same vibe my daughter even said "it feels weird in here let's leave" and she's 12! This place is awful don't go here!

Yelp
Family owns shop and lunch counter. Prices are high compared to other j-convenience stores but they make up for it in charm and great service.

Yelp
Honestly I think Maido is the some of the best Japanese food in Philly! I come here often for a quick Japanese meal. It is a cafe style restaurant and they also have a Japanese grocery/market attached to it. I usually come here for dinner but this past visit I went for a weekday lunch and I didn't realize how awesome their lunch special was. For $10, you are able to get an entree, a small udon, and a salad. We got the chicken teriyaki and it was very flavorful and the chicken was done to perfection. The udon is also delicious - great broth and delicious noodles. We also tried the tempura on the side which came with two shrimp tempura and various other vegetable tempura and it was yummy as well! They also have free water or barley tea to accompany your meal. We also got a little stuffed animal with our purchase to celebrate the new year which was really cute! The service is always great and I love the atmosphere of Maido. The grocery part of Maido is also nice. They have a great variety of Japanese snacks, foods, a selection of fresh produce, frozen foods, and stationary. Parking is pretty limited out front so I usually end up parking in the lot at Suburban Square. Overall, love this place for a quick and affordable meal!

Yelp
One of my favorite stops in Ardmore, MAIDO has something for everyone! I love the grocery store chock/full of Asian snacks and goods (skincare, frozen dumplings, freshly-made bread and buns, Pocky, jewelry, socks, pens, seaweed, crackers, and more), but I only recently just tried their sit-down restaurant food so that is what this review is for. The service is serious and a bit curt, but I think they just are very matter-of-fact and quick, wanting to do their jobs. I got the large udon with a side of pickled vegetables, a friend got yakisoba, and another ordered katsu don. She didn't like her katsu don but it's only because she doesn't like eggs and there were lots of eggs in it (heads up.) The yakisoba looked good and it was a large portion! I liked my udon but thought the portion of pickled vegetables could've been more given the price, but liked the variety of picked vegetables-I'd never seen 2 of them before! (Yellow, pink, black, and green.) I loved the open kitchen so we could see our meals being cooked, and a Japanese animated film (Miyazaki) played on the wall! There was also a stuffed bear in a chair by the window. I'll be back here for good Japanese food on the main line right near the Ardmore train station and Suburban Square.

Yelp
I can't emphasize how much I love Maido! This little market and cafeteria will always be held very near and dear to my heart and I will always be willing to trek out to Ardmore from the city to come here. I find that it's a bit harder to come by extensive options for Japanese comfort food in the Philadelphia area - look no further than Maido. They have everything from katsu to curry to onigiri made fresh every day for quick takeout snacks / lunches. Everything is reasonably priced and delicious - my personal favorite is always the okonomiyaki. It's made to order, served piping hot, and drizzled in Japanese mayo, delicious okonomiyaki sauce (a nice, savory taste) and bonito flakes. There's no other dish like it, and I certainly can't find a place that does it better than Maido. Last time I also split a tonkatsu chicken curry with my partner - it did the soul real good, and the portion was huge. There's also a side market that sells adorable Japanese gifts, skin care candies, snacks, grocery items (get your bonito flakes to cook with here! and your own Japanese mayo!), mochi, noodles, and more niche items that your H-mart might not even have that are catered more specifically towards Japanese cooking. Super easy to get here by train if you take the R-5 to Ardmore, it's right by the train station. If you're driving, you can usually find street parking or just park in Suburban Square. In the summer, they have seasonal shaved ice with amazing flavors like yuzu honey and calpico (Japanese soda flavor). Come by while it's hot!

Yelp
Loved the grocery store and food market! Customer service was excellent all around and the store was super inviting. Had a small but balanced selection of market items. The food at the open kitchen was delicious!

Yelp
Maido was great! A small Japanese marketplace that we stopped by on the way back to Virginia and this place made me excited with the amount of goods I got. The staff was super nice and they had a really nice stationary selection, which i appreciate. Be careful with the prices, because some items did not have clear cut labels (I almost bought a 40 dollar notebook). But overall, their prices are fair and I hope to be back to try more of their food!

Yelp
The grocery store is mediocre at best. Many of the things can be found in other Asian grocery stores near Philly, and I found quite a few items very overpriced. The restaurant/food section is a real disappointment. We got karaage chicken and takoyaki, and they just don't taste fresh and just taste like frozen food you got from the grocery store. The katsu don is very sad looking, and the tonkatsu is so dry and the batter is not crunchy or fresh at all, even though we got all the food for here and ate it right away. There is also no flavor in the katsu don besides grounded pepper. The yakisoba is good! We both like the flavor, and it's a good portion of noodles. Service is excellent from both the restaurant and the grocery store. Very good staff, and they seem happy working there as well. Overall, the place seems very overrated. The grocery selection is not great (you can get a lot more in any H mart in Philly, for example), and the food it just a disappointment. This place perhaps has little or even no competition in the area, but people at Ardmore deserve better.

Yelp
Wow - truly a hidden gem. An unsuspecting restaurant in a small Japanese market, the food served at Maido keeps us coming back again and again. The udon, gyudon, fried mackerel, and takoyaki were all fantastic. This is authentic Japanese food, not fusion Asian, which I also enjoy. I plan to try the curry katsu next!

Yelp
Great food for dine in/take out, and amazing market selection. Their pork katsu with curry & rice is my favorite item! I go to MAIDO for ramen, matcha, miso, etc. For the area- they do have quite a much larger selection than other stores nearby. Highly recommend!
