Downtown Austin Japanese Restaurant Maiko Sushi Lounge Is Closing | Eater Austin

"A downtown Japanese restaurant at 311 West Sixth Street is closing this month; its last day of service will be Wednesday, October 27. The building at that address will be demolished to make way for a new high‑rise mixed‑use development (the BBVA Tower). The restaurant originally opened in 2005." - Nadia Chaudhury

Maiko Sushi Lounge Will Be Demolished in 2020 to Become BBVA Tower | Eater Austin

"Located at 311 West Sixth since 2005, this long-running sushi lounge faces closure or relocation after city approval of plans to build the BBVA Tower, which will become Austin’s second-tallest building. The brick building that houses the restaurant dates to 1927 and has been altered over the years, making it ineligible for protection by the Texas Historical Commission. Initial timelines had demolition beginning toward the end of this year, but the restaurant posted on Facebook that demolition won’t occur until “at least next year.” There is no public word yet on the lounge’s future plans." - Erin Russell

Google
Do not order delivery from this place. Uber Eats, DoorDash; it doesn’t matter. I ordered through Uber Eats and kept it simple: avocado and cream cheese rolls. When a dish has only two ingredients, you’d expect both to be fresh. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. As yall can see in the picture, the avocado was clearly old, brown, mushy, and oxidized. It completely ruined the taste and texture of the roll. The entire thing was slimy and genuinely off putting. This was part of an order totaling over $100, and this was the only item on the menu I could eat. I couldn’t even enjoy that. If you’re ordering sushi for delivery, especially something this basic, save your money and order elsewhere.

Google
Second visit and I have had a great experience both times. Fast service and food was excellent. The tempera veggies were so delicious snd I think I got some kind of fancier spicy tuna roll. Sorry, I forgot what it was called but delicious.

Google
Service was great from the moment I walked in. I sat at the bar, but the have table service also. I got two of their specialty rolls which were good and the seaweed salad which was really good! Great place overall.

Google
Do not order delivery from this place , the restaurant auto confirms the order so you can’t cancel then theytake an hour to make the order. Drivers left they took so long . I ordered a butterfly roll and add tuna on top. $15.50 plus $6 .They didn’t add the extra tuna. The roll is slopply made . Over $25 plus fees for supermarket sushi.

Google
Great little Japanese restaurant. Great value lunch, delicious sushi 🍣 selection and dim sum 🥟 I had a speedy and very tasty lunch. Attentive service, too.

Google
Of course the picture of the food I was looking for I couldn't find on the menu. Ended up asking the waitress, if they have the item on the menu which was eel. She was very very helpful. The food was good, not what I anticipated but what I kind of needed.

Google
loved this sushi and their jalapeño bites are amazing, prices are considerably cheap given the quality of the food, I'll definitely be coming back here again 🤩😍😍😋

Google
We happened to be downtown and wanted some sushi so decided to try this place out. Overall, there’s some good things and some duds. Shaggy dog roll (not pictured) was 10/10 and my happy hours yaki soba was yummy. I probably wouldn’t get the other rolls I got again (tasted stale and there wasn’t that much lump crab on the lump crab california roll). We’re used to sushi junai and raku sushi so comparatively this place is more expensive.

Yelp
Popped in on a Friday night and was surprised to see it wasn't too busy. Especially after I learned they do Happy Hour everyday from 4pm to close. What a deal! It's anywhere from $3-$5 off an entree or drink. Always down for a good deal. Got sat at the sushi bar and there was a tv w/o captions soooo just watched them make the rolls. Got the Goyza and the Maiko nigiri (8 peices). The server was nice and gave ample time to review the menu after checking a few times if I was ready. The food was solid, didn't care for one of the nigiri....otherwise delicious. Lychee martini also tasty! Music wasn't too loud and laid back atmosphere.

Yelp
Maiko Sushi is a great sushi restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Austin. They are a short walk away from the major bar scenes and offer great food with affordable prices. Happy Hour is from 4PM-closing daily and always hits the spot with my sushi craving. The Salmon Sashimi, Beef Skewers, and Spicy Tuna Roll are always my go to. Mixed Drinks here are delicious and it's just a great vibe overall. Service is always friendly and timely. Definitely a must try for sushi lovers and conveniently located for a pre-drinking spot and date night!

Yelp
Really? All these high scores? Definitely not our experience! We came in while visiting Austin because, believe it or not, we were kind of tired of BBQ! We were not in for a full blown meal and so we ordered the Sushi 123 which provides a smaller, shareable portion perfect to fill our cravings. We asked if they had a salmon roll that came with lemon slices on top and were told "no but all of our rolls can be customized however you like." We asked if we could have lemon added to our roll and inquired as to how much that would cost. Our server told us it would be like fifty cents so, no brainer. So our order included a roll, some edamame and a couple pieces of nigiri. We were waiting for it to come; while seeing our server shmoozing with some young ladies, I noticed our food sitting on the shelf and finally got his attention and mentioned we were still waiting for our meal. He brought our roll and nigiri but did not bring the edamame which he said would be right out. We finished our food and still had to wait for the edamame, which came to us cold. We didn't finish it and asked him to bring our bill. When he showed up with it I noticed they were charging us $5 for the lemon slices! I called him over and told him I wasn't paying for the lemon slices as he told us it would only be "like 50 cents." He said he would talk to the chef. Then he came back and said "well since it's a customized roll, it costs an additional $5". I said no, not paying $5 for a few pieces of thinly sliced lemons. Take it off my bill. Then he came back again and said he was only authorized to take of $3. This entire exchange related to the up charge took about 20 minutes. I was done arguing with him about this, told him to take the $3 off the bill and paid for it but did not leave him a tip. He was such a double talking p.o.s. I couldn't stand it anymore. I DO NOT recommend this place. It is the worst customer service I've experienced at any sushi restaurant I have ever been to and I've been to many of them. By the way, this is the ONLY negative experience I've had at any sushi joint, so be wary of this place. FYI, we were seated at 9pm and left at 9:45pm. There were like three other parties (six people) in the place, and we sat at the sushi bar. Should have been much better service than what we received.

Yelp
Came back to Maiko for lunch with husband and was pleasantly surprised by all the upgrades in decor and quality of fish! We ordered the Sashimi for one, two extra Sake Toro, Dragon Roll and Scorpion Roll, and loved it all!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised at the quality, very fresh. I had the sushi dinner123 with salmon and it was not fishy at all but fresh and buttery taste. The potion was large. Meaty pieces of sushi and nigiri. The seasoning on the spicy edamame is like crack. Our server was friendly and attentive. I think the pricing is pretty fair too. I won't hesitate to come back when I'm in the area! The vibe is clean, modern, trendy. Yes, parking is an issue but that's par for the course in that area.

Yelp
Our arrival dinner in Austin was at Maiko Sushi, right across the street from our hotel. The outside is non-descript, but walking inside you'll find a trendy lounge-style restaurant with a bar and nightclub feel. Their menu has a nice mix of bento boxes, happy hour small bites, and of course sushi. Note their happy hour menu is available 4pm to close, so order up! The food here is excellent, and yes everything is bigger in Texas especially the entrees. We ordered: * Lychee Martini was refreshing * Shishito peppers were nicely charred and had the right amount of seasoning and sauce * Surprised to see steamed spicy wontons from the main appetizer menu - good though some more Sichuan peppercorn would be nice * Chicken thigh skewers were juicy, and huge! * The Salmon Bento had a really thick filet - cooked perfectly and moist. * For sushi lovers definitely get the Sushi for One - a nice mix of fresh nigiri sushi and an entire Maiko Roll - basically a large, mixed fish maki roll with sauce.

Yelp
I ordered the Orange Dragon, Godzilla Roll, hamachi and sake toro nigiri, beef skewer, and a shrimp dim sum. Everything was delicious! The rolls were tasty, with creamy avocado and crunchy cucumbers that complimented the umami fish. The nigiri was fresh and delicious. I liked the beef skewer but it was even good without the teriyaki sauce. The shrimp dim sum was tasty too. I ordered through DoorDash so I can't speak to the service.

Yelp
Maiko Sushi is a tried and true sushi spot that never disappoints! Their sushi is always so fresh you can really taste the difference. Currently they are offering free sake one per table during happy hour. Great pairing with their happy hour food. This day I went with the Salmon Avoccado Cucumber. So delish!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Really fresh sushi. I had the Sake Maki several nights in a row while staying at a hotel nearby for an event. It was always super tasty, packed well and fresh. Would absolutely order from here again (and in fact did several times this week!)

Yelp
Amazing sushi restaurant downtown! Had a great experience on Sunday night! my waiter was Jelani and he went above and beyond. I felt like a friend visiting even though I had never been here before. I love the layout of the restaurant, the lights seating, it's definitely a spot you'll want to try out this weekend!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sushi I've had in a long time. Good selection, daily specials, and fresh fish. Restaurant was very clean, and the bathrooms are oddly great (the mirrors). Service was a little sluggish, but I attribute that to being the first customers of the day. We will be back.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Maiko is the stable, reliable restaurant you go to when you're craving mid-quality sushi & don't want to break the bank. While the rolls may not be the most memorable, Maiko offers a daily happy hour from 4 PM until closing, making it a convenient & affordable option. I've been here a few times now, and the restaurant tends to be less crowded than other sushi restaurants, making it the perfect walk-in restaurant and providing the space needed for larger groups. Note: avoid ordering the Scorpion (specialty roll), as this tasted fried and not very refreshing

Yelp
Great food and affordable happy hour, decent location with very little parking and the vibe is kinda boring now. It's a bit generic compared to it's previous location. But we also went in the middle of the day so I feel like it would look nicer in the evening. I will say the side of the building we sat on was facing a very busy parking lot which is kinda distracting if you're with other people. The food was great and the service was fast. I feel like they did a great job refilling drinks and checking in on us. I also was not feeling well and they took great care of me. Their green tea is very good! I don't remember what rolls I got but I remember liking it but it was not mind blowing by any means. I feel like this is a solid spot to visit for happy hour. If you like mac and cheese you HAVE to get the sake Mac and Cheese. That's literally the thing that always brings me back.

Yelp
Came around 6pm for dinner and it was right across the street from our hotel. Got seated quickly and ordered a few things. Got 2 signature rolls, tempura, egg rolls, and a veggie roll with cucumber and avocado. The service was great and our waitress was friendly and nice. The food was mediocre, eh. Nothing special, but it was filling and quick which we appreciated.
google avatar

Karrie V.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber. 3 rolls of sushi, crab rangoons, and shrimp and crawfish fried rice. Ran around $106 before a driver tip. Food was delicious. Would order again.
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Kevin, the manager is an awful manager with an attitude problem. I've ordered many times with the old manager and my food is always ready on time but with this new manager it never is. I've grown more and more frustrated and asked him why he can never have the food ready when it is promised and he told me to go to hell. Don't worry, Kevin, I won't come back to your restaurant since you don't seem to have any clue how to manage it And how to talk to customers.
google avatar

Shelette S.

Yelp
The sushi was presented well but the taste was just ok. Neither roll was really flavorful and the crab roll was pretty dry. The service was good, though.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
We happened on this place during a Google search "sushi near me" but it was surprisingly good. I think they have a pretty much all day happy hour so that is always nice especially since it's in downtown looking for an affordable option is always hard. Their dimsum trio is surprisingly good. The soup dumpling is very flavorful so I would recommend getting that over the other two options if you have to choose. I got the spicy ocean crunch roll which is fairly basic but the salmon and yellow tail didn't taste fishy and the rice was soft and flavorful. My fiance for the Salmon Sushi Dinner 123 and everything tasted good and fresh even the sashimi. The service was fast and there were plenty of people even on a sunday evening. We'll definitely come back for a cheap sushi fix.

Yelp
First time to Maiko and it did not disappoint!! I was looking for a last minute spot for HH to meet friend and we needed something that opened around 4p, so when Maiko popped up we took a chance and I'm so happy we did! Oscar, the bartender, was super helpful in getting us ready to order and taking care of us! He made great recommendations and kept rhetorical wine full... HH was great and fairly priced for a DT HH in Austin... it was a Friday night and not too busy in the early evening... I bet parking can get tricky with the DT traffic but I got lucky with parking and it was easy peasy! The food was really good and cured the sushi craving we both had!! The pepper tuna was so yummy and I always love shishito peppers and Maiko did them RIGHT! Overall, great experience and happy to have stumbled upon this spot!
google avatar

ScottandRebekah M.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Our server, Daisy, was amazing! I only wish they had mild yum yum sauce and not spicy mayo sauce. It was also a little cold. But the food and drinks were delicious! Beautiful decor and dishes! Great music!!
google avatar

Dorothy G.

Yelp
Would highly recommend shaggy dog, it's was a good sushi meal. The waiters were very nice and helpful. The place was extremely clean spacious. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Loveeee this sushi spot. I'd recommend their two roll combo for lunch. Delicious, filling, and affordable! Every time I go, even with the lunch rush, the service is great! Great Sushi in downtown.
google avatar

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting Austin and were interested in a sushi dinner. We were sold on the every day happy hour menu from 4-7pm! We walked in about 6:15pm on a Saturday and were promptly seated at the sushi bar. I had a lychee martini and we split 4 rolls. Service was attentive. Solid choice if you're looking for a decent sushi dinner that doesn't break the bank!
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
If you're looking for superior sushi-grade fish, this is not the place for you. However, pretty solid spot for a casual lunch. Their lunch specials are attractive ($18 for a bento box that includes three pieces of spicy tuna, a side salad + miso soup, veggie fried rice, and some chicken gyoza). I was a bit disappointed with the poke bowl - not enough sashimi and too much rice. Very friendly and attentive staff!
google avatar

Maryjane S.

Yelp
The sushi, tempura and wings taste great. Actually anything you order would be exceptional. The service is outstanding and the server checks back with you often to see if you need anything else. We sat at the bar and the server was very attentive and friendly. The ambiance is relaxing and you never feel rushed. My son and I have been here several times and it never disappoints.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great happy hour. Our food came out fast and the bartender was very friendly. Loved the decor, will definitely come back.
google avatar

Cameron N.

Yelp
I was skeptical with the place being downtown, but I'm glad I went! I thought the staff in training were nice and all things were affordable and decent quality. I probably wouldn't come back due to my preference for other spots in town BUT think folks should make their own judgement
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
great experience at maiko's happy hour! they run their happy hour specials everyday from 4pm - 7pm! I LOVE their gyoza and highly recommend getting that (it's my go to every single time)! This time, we got the fire cracker roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, pepper tuna, topped with eel sauce) which was DELICIOUS 10/10. I'm not a big cream cheese lover on sushi, but this worked so well and was so yummy! not overpowering like at other places! my other favorite roll here is the terminator (tempura spicy tuna roll topped with warm spicy mayo, masago, and crawfish)! warm rolls typically are not my go to either, but i'm so obsessed with it and would highly recommend! they also had nigiri on their happy hour menu for only 3.5! I got the hamachi and eel and would highly recommend both (eel was 10/10, hamachi was 9.5/10)! it wasn't too busy on a weekday during happy hour so it'd be a good place to visit if you're not looking to make a reservation! parking wise, there is street parking but my go to is always just to valet at P.f. Chang's right next door, which is $12 total + tip! All and all, I love this place so much & it's definitely my top place for a quick, casual meal that's absolutely delicious! Give them a try for sure!
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
Great date night spot. My husband and I were visiting the area were craving sushi. This place was perfect for us because it was a couple of blocks away from our hotel and we could walk there quickly. We sat at the sushi bar and honestly it was our favorite part. We loved watching them make the different rolls right in front of us platting them beautifully. The chicken gyozas were so delicious and perfectly crispy. We also got a couple rolls and the teriyaki chicken, all three items were amazing. It was a little loud in the restaurant once it filled up, but I saw that on a couple reviews so it didn't bug us much since we knew ahead of time. But they also had some cute outdoor seating if you don't want to be in the restaurant with everyone.

Lilly J.

Yelp
Got takeout and it was pretty darn good! I got the butterfly roll and would order again. Lots of fish inside, not sparse!
google avatar

Alysia M.

Yelp
Service was great no complaints there against the staff. But do not order the spicy girl. It's basically ground fish (and too much) with only a sliver of avocado added. Felt like I was eating a can of dog food and rice. Very unfortunate. Also the entire place smelled REALLY strongly of pinesol?? Or bleach when walking in?? I guess sanitation is good? But it was too much. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Caitlyn R.

Yelp
Our service was great and the food was good. My fiancé and I ordered the calamari, scallops, a few rolls, and sashimi. The scallops with seaweed salad was recommended by our waiter and hands down the best thing we ate that night. The scallops were perfectly cooked with the right amount of umami flavor. The seaweed salad was fresh and balanced the butteriness of the scallops. The rolls were as expected, nothing spectacular but still good and at a great price point. Normally sashimi is my go to but their cuts weren't ideal and flavor was mediocre. Overall, was a good spot to stumble into but probably not one I would seek out again.

Dennis Z.

Yelp
Have eaten here many times when in Austin. Sushi has always been very good. But.... a $3.50 surprise charge for wasabi?!? Not cool.
google avatar

Natalja M.

Yelp
Amazing place, inside is spacious, clean and colorful atmosphere. Sushi was delicious! Service was impeccable, server was very friendly, always asking if we needed anything, very attentive. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
Rude hostess very forcefully told my partner we're not allowed outside drinks (it was coffee), while i understand the policy the approach wasn't welcoming and also not a drink they even serve. There was still 20 min left on happy hour but she did not provide the menu. I verified with the waitress and she kindly let us order. We ordered the salmon and yellowtail 123 plates with salmon, sushi and spicy rolls, crawfish roll and eel roll, and calamari. Disappointing Soggy rice on two rolls, they comped one... which i thought was strange. You could see the visible difference between the rice. This was the first time I've ever let the waiter know about bad food because it was obviously not just preferences. Fish was good quality and real wasabi is available.
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
It wasn't great. And when the roll the server suggested to me was too spicy, he basically said it was my fault for not realizing by the name (scorpion) that it'd be spicy. He may be right but his attitude wasn't. I should have gone to PF Changs... The soup dumplings were delicious.

Ronald T.

Yelp
Food was tasty and delivered on time although drivers had trouble finding the address. The packaged ginger and wasabi were the only bad thing.
google avatar

Camille T.

Yelp
Here right now and everything was going good until we got this disgusting crab roll. It was dry and tasted like tissue paper. The manager only took one of the rolls (we ordered 4 total) off as he said that was all he could do because we ate most of it (lies ...we spit it into napkins) Will never be back....picture depicts what seems like days old frozen crab. I tried so hard to eat my dinner but alas could not make it through.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
Delicious food! We came for happy hour (4-7 pm every day) so the prices were a bit better. Everything we had was delicious. First the sake Mac and cheese was so good and piping hot! The firecracker roll was amazing!! We would definitely order that again. The spicy ocean roll was decent; we aren't huge fans of the fresh jalapeño in the roll. We also got salmon nigiri and it was very impressive. The happy hour price is pretty good, and the rice was very tasty! The food came out very fast. But, we had to wait quite a while for our check which kind of tainted the service for us. Our server seemed to be helping every other table besides us especially after we were done eating. It took us almost 30 minutes just to get our check and pay. She was rude and inattentive as soon as we ordered. The place is loud once it starts filling with people. But the atmosphere is casual and relatively relaxed. Definitely a good date or group dinner spot!
google avatar

Tarann S.

Yelp
Delicious food and drink. Lobster Mac and cheese. Lychee martini with gin instead of vodka.

Libby P.

Yelp
The service was great - checked on us a lot but not excessively so. The food came out quick and was good. We had the spicy tuna roll, the crab rangoon and hubby got the dim sum trio. All was really good and fresh.
google avatar

Vishal P.

Yelp
Small little gem and I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of seating, friendly staff. A good amount of sake to choose from also. A decent amount of specialty rolls and good lunch options for a bento box.
google avatar

Cori W.

Yelp
Another colleague dinner adventure here to share. The happy hour pineapple cold sake was quite good. Everyone got sushi save one person who got sake Mac n cheese and gyoza. I got the spicy salmon roll and another roll that was supposed extra spicy with jalapeños. The salmon roll was fine. The extra spicy roll was meh. The jalapeños had heat of a bell pepper. This place was ok. Nothing special, but nothing really wrong either. The server was nice and had good suggestions.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Lunch was fantastic. The service was outstanding and I was pleased with the short walk from the convention center to grab a quick and tasty lunch!
google avatar

Aaron Y.

Yelp
I placed a pickup order on DoorDash and it was accepted by the restaurant, but when I got there i was told they no longer worked with DoorDash and couldn't work the order or send a refund?? The manager was staring at his computer and refused to talk. Worst service ever!

Tulio P.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Had it delivered to hotel and it was well packed delicious. Would eat here again.
google avatar

Joni H.

Yelp
I picked up a poke bowl and order of sushi to go. They had my order ready and the server was friendly. The food was average and not amazing. I liked the poke bowl, the flavor was great. The sushi had very dry rice and was difficult to chew.

Audrey S.

Yelp
This restaurant never disappoints. Beautiful food. Terrific service. I return every time I'm in Austin.
google avatar

Cady H.

Yelp
Server said the happy hour dinner was a specific roll (salmon roll and hamachi roll) and delivered something different to the table; (spicy salmon and spicy hamachi) I cannot eat the spicy versions of these because it upsets my stomach and when asked to fix to the roll we were originally told, they said it would be a $9 upcharge and we had to pay anyways.
