SF Meal Delivery Startup Munchery Shuts Down, Laying off Hundreds of Workers | Eater SF

"A San Francisco–based meal delivery service that once raised more than $125 million at a $300 million valuation has shut down operations entirely and laid off hundreds of local workers immediately. Munchery announced via email that it is closing its doors effective immediately and that any outstanding orders will be canceled and refunded. Its final product was simple: meal kits and pre-made meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner priced roughly $9–$14, with a membership option ($9 monthly or $85 yearly) that offered 20% off. The nine-year-old startup expanded to New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle before contracting back to the Bay Area (by spring 2018); at one point in 2016 it produced far more meals than customers purchased, losing as much as $5 million a month in unsold meals, and in 2017—after taking funding from backers including Menlo Ventures and Sherpa Capital—it pulled back and laid off about 30% of its workers (roughly 250 people). Its collapse is the latest in a string of meal-delivery startups to fold, alongside companies such as Sprig, Spoonrocket, and Bento." - Caleb Pershan

SF Food Startup Munchery Shuts Down LA, Seattle, and NYC Operations | Eater SF

"A San Francisco–based food startup that launched locally in 2010, Munchery has shut down operations in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle and retreated to just the Bay Area. I understood the company announced the move alongside a reduction of 30 percent of its workforce—more than 250 workers laid off—and CEO James Beriker wrote he was “saddened by this development,” while saying the team will “focus on growing our business in San Francisco.” The company delivered fully prepared meals on-demand from its commissary kitchen, and according to Crunchbase had raised more than $125 million, though it was reportedly losing as much as $5 million a month in unsold meals in 2016; in 2017 it cut 30 of its then-900 San Francisco employees in a “normal course adjustment” even as Beriker projected national expansion. A source familiar with Seattle operations said that market was too small to be successful and never gained traction after an initial sales spike following a later series investment of $85 million. I see this retreat as further evidence that the food-delivery market is difficult to prosper in—other players like Sprig (which shut down despite $57 million in funding), Bento, and Spoonrocket met similar fates, though companies like Thistle continue—and Beriker nonetheless concluded on a positive note: “I fundamentally believe in the opportunity that exists in food e-commerce, fresh food production and home delivery — and in our position as a leading innovator in this market.”" - Caleb Pershan

We have patronized this delightful cafe on several occasions over the past few weeks. Amy, the proprietor, consistently provides a welcoming and amiable atmosphere. The cafe is charming and inviting. The pork in the Cuban sandwich is well-seasoned and quite delicious. The breakfast sandwiches are comforting; they remind me of homemade breakfasts at home. The pastries are made fresh. The coffee served surpasses the ones served by the chain establishments. We were introduced to Chai Tea by the barista during our most recent visit, and it has become our new favorite drink. Everyone we have met here has shown love and passion for what they serve, and it is evident in every bite and sip. We can't wait to see them again.

Very cute sandwich shop, love the decor. The sandwich was delicious. I wish it was a little larger (I already ate half in the photo) and I wish there was somewhere to wait for Togo orders. I kind of just felt in the way the whole time I was waiting. But over all loved it, I can’t wait to try out delivery!

This was my first time visiting Main Munchery, and the experience was great. The menu is expensive, and the prices are very reasonable. I had the caesar salad and the macaroni and cheese, which were delicious, and my friend got one of their paninis. We actually doubled back to grab dessert to-go, and I had the chance to chat with the owner Amy. She gave a great recommendation based on some dietary restrictions, and I really enjoyed the pumpkin cheesecake cupcake. I will definitely be coming back!

I stumbled across this place after having a bad customer service experience down the road at U-Haul. As soon as I pull in the parking lot, my day started to turn for the better. The husband to the wife that owns a restaurant has a beautiful immaculate Chevelle sitting out front, which is a personal favorite. I know that has nothing to do with the restaurant, but it just started my great experience. As soon as you walk into what you can clearly see is family owned and operated establishment, everyone was nice and greeted you with kindness and help (of course I asked about the car and the husband took me back outside so that I could look at it) The owner(the wife) shows me a few pictures from their Insta account off of her phone of some specialty coffees. In case I was interested, because some people like to see things before ordering. I just ordered a small iced coffee and an avocado toast, which you can choose what type of bread you want it on, I got wheat, And it was absolutely delicious. It comes with a little side of some cut up strawberries which were a wonderful touch. The avocado they put on the toast is clearly not pre-bought and is hand cut up and made which is the most delicious way. They also have homemade pastries for sale and I got a cookie sandwich to go for the husband and he was very happy. I am very happy I stopped by and thankful for the great food, coffee and atmosphere!

We had a wonderful experience at Main Munchery on Main Street! The Cuban Panini was absolutely delicious perfectly pressed with great flavor in every bite and the BLT was fresh, crisp, and satisfying. The whole place was spotless, which really stood out and added to the comfort of dining in. On top of that, we were greeted with a warm and genuine welcome that made us feel more than welcomed. Great food, clean atmosphere, and friendly service we will definitely come back!
