I'm going to start this by contradicting the haters who compare this to HMart and space that was otherwise not making money for HEB. When this store opened, this space was "cafe mueller," heb's first bar/restaurant, and I miss it! They had the best burger in town and really good brisket. They had an outdoor play yard for kids. A lot of the outdoor seating area was sacrificed to add the Curbside buildout during COVID.
The food hall concept also opened during COVID, and conveniently has you order at a kiosk for each vendor. Very safe. All the seating is in the (very dark and cold) bar or outdoors, and there is less of it than there used to be. Also, I don't think any of the vendors have kids portions, and half the seating is bar height, so I'm no longer interested in bringing my kids here - total bummer, as we all loved cafe mueller. With the kiosks and separate bar, I am definitely not inclined to drag my kids here - I'd have to herd them through all the kiosks and the bar to get everyone's order in, and then pick everything up by vendor, and would be unable to have eyes on my kids at the table while doing so. You now need to go into the bar for drink refills, where I wouldn't sit with my kids because of the bar-height tables.
The pickup part is what makes the food court feel like an airport - everyone is just kind of waiting around. There are no lines, unlike cafe mueller, which always had a line, but the standing around makes it feel depressing.
The food is ok. I like some of the vendors more than others. My favorite is Calle Taqueria. It's a good place to pick up lunch to go midday, or for ordering from Favor.
The one advantage to Main Streat is that it tends to have no delivery fee on Favor, since it's at HEB. However, if you order from more than one place, you get more than one runner, since every vendor is a separate order. I suppose you can make one order at one vendor, and contact the runner to go to other vendors on the same run.
HEB, if you're reading this, I know you're collecting data. Windsor Park and Mueller has lots of families. Is there a way you could once again make this space friendly to families with small kids who want to get a bite to eat while doing the grocery shopping? And more of a community gathering space, with more seating? I used to meet up with a cyclist group here, and I don't think we could do that in the current configuration, nor will I visit with my kids for the reasons described above.
