Portland Cookware Shop Kitchen Culture Fully Opens in Foster-Powell | Eater Portland

"I learned that Portland's Eem is teaming up with Crispy Gai from Portland, Maine for a collaborative dinner on January 24; chefs Colin Yoshimoto (Eem) and Cyle Reynolds (Crispy Gai) are devising an a la carte menu of about seven dishes, teasing items such as oysters with nahm jim seafood, smoked brisket with khao soi, barbecue pork steak nam tok (waterfall salad), and Crispy Gai chicken wings. The dinner runs from 5 p.m. until sold out." - Janey Wong

Had to visit MMCER on Saturday night, 12/20/25, for a pinched nerve causing excruciating pain. I had already been ignored by another ER closer to home, so I was super hesitant to make the 45 minute trip to get there while in terrible pain. I’m so glad I did. From the minute I entered the doors they were understanding, caring, and compassionate. They quickly assessed me and gave me an IV and meds to get me stabilized and more comfortable. From there we moved to a bed in the hall, but considering I was super comfortable, able to lay down, and being taken care of, I didn’t care about the location. Nurses and doctors checked in with us frequently, they got me in for an MRI so we would know exactly what we were dealing with rather than guessing. This allowed them to come up with a plan for appropriate treatment that worked. I wish I was in a better state of mind to remember the names of the wonderful nurses and doctors that worked with us. Thank You for taking such awesome care of me in my time of need!

I had to come back due to compliations from a subarachnoid hemorrhage/aneurysm I had. It was extremely busy, to the point where I am laying on a cot in a hallway waiting for a room to open up, however, the nursing staff are expertly handling all sorts of patients with the grace and ease of seasoned professionals. Is it busy here? Sure is. Are things slow moving due to patient volume? You betcha. But these wonderful people come in everyday with a can-do attitude and do the absolute best they can.

Google
They leave sick people in the waiting room sitting in a dam chair for 11 hours. I can see why they have such awful reviews the state should be stepping in and cleaning this place up.

Pediatric ER was busy and things took awhile but the staff were very kind and professional and aware of the time and kept us informed. Very good at interacting with us and our son as well. RN Anna C was awesome!! Dr. Bohanske and was so kind and professional!

I went to the ER after a seizure and serious symptoms like trouble speaking and confusion, but I was treated like it was “just a headache.” I waited over 5 hours to see a doctor. I didn’t know I had to explain everything to a nurse first - I assumed medical staff could assess a patient’s condition without me having to repeat myself, especially when I could barely speak. The whole experience was neglectful, frustrating, and frightening. They urgently need to improve their patient care and triage.

Had a dislocated shoulder and it was very quickly dealt with. Everyone I met was extremely helpful and friendly. X-rays were taken and the problem shoulder put back into place painlessly. Went from feeling like my arm was slowly ripping apart from gravity to almost no pain. I was properly recommended a sports doctor afterwards as my encounter was with asphalt and they knew I'm probably going to end up doing it again. I chose to avoid my local hospital to come here and I think that was a good choice.

Google
Valet parking. Great staff, private and all heath care work up done before triage. Blood drawn before seeing provider. About as efficient as we have experienced in 40 years. Great job, Maine Health ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ended up sitting in the waiting room for 7 hours (until 3AM!) with my girlfriend, who had severe stomach pains, a fever, a headache, an elevated heart rate, and sensitive skin. I don't blame any of the staff for this, as they were courteous and kind when we did interact with them. I assume the issue boiled down to a combination of overcrowding and understaffing. Nonetheless, I can't in good conscience recommend that anyone come here for anything but the most extreme emergencies; there were plenty of other people in the ER waiting for almost as long as we were.

Yelp
I owe the staff at MMC so much love and gratitude for taking care of me for my surgery last November. They all rock from my surgeon to my nursing team. Love them all. Even food service rocked. Still does. Impromptu visit to put me through tests in the morning. So stuck in my room with a view. Lunch was served, per request and it sounded yummy. It was in my room in what seemed like a matter of minutes and looked great. Nothing fancy with the presentation but with COVID they take all the precautions. Let me tell you. That was the best veggie burger and low sodium tomato soup ever. Heart healthy for sure. But yummy. I wish I had ordered more. But Instill have dinner. Thanks for taking care of me again!

Yelp
I was seeing a doctor at the southern Maine office for sleep issues I wouldn't recommend this doctor to anybody. It was the worst experience ever. I ended up worse than I began I'm a very private person and he had people in the office help him with what he was doing. This was very humiliating for me as being a private person. In the beginning he seemed to help but just got worse over time Im very happy to say I now have very professional doctors with a lot of morals at other hospitals

Yelp
You have got to be the WORST medical center I have EVER DEALT WITH. NOW I had to report 3 doctors to medical board because nobody listens. And then people who actually need you. You treat them like trash. Your doctors are a joke. You're a useless company. I don't understand why people choose you. I met a doctor from these facilities once. And then I leave. Because you have proven yourself incompetent. Dr stadler top surgeon in Maine. I'm a hit-and-run survivor and he didn't understand my extremities. Right hip was ripped off my pelvis and femur ball was broken. Pelvis smushed flat as the ground. Tells me I'm to complicated for him and proceeded to not order scans that EMG deemed necessary..... Plus tons of other crap. Like a blockage in my L5 S1 joints and do you think a spine specialist CARED NO. THEY WOULDN'T EVEN TAKE ME AS A CLIENT... WHAT A TRASH COMPANY I WILL REPORT ALL DOCTORS I HAVE SEEN TO MEDICAL BOARD NOW. NOT JUST THE COUPLE. START LISTENING TO PATIENTS. THEY KNOW THEIR BODIES BETTER THAN YOU. AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD LISTEN. SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE 4 CANCER BECAUSE YOU INCOMPETENTS DON'T LISTEN

Yelp
This is THE WORST hospital I've ever been to. This place should have been shut down a long time ago. If you can, PLEASE go to one of the world-renowned hospitals in Boston instead. If your loved one ends up in the ICU here, expect a nurse practitioner to be in charge of his/her care. We only met one doctor (extremely rude, unprofessional, and dismissive neurologist) the entire 8 days my dad was in the ICU after suffering a cardiac arrest. This is the only hospital I've been to where nurse practitioners and PAs assume the roles of doctors in the ICU. They seem to give up on patients immediately if there is any sign of brain damage, promptly contacting the Organ Procurement Organization right after relaying the worst news imaginable to families. How thoughtful of them to hand over your phone number and family member's full medical records to the OPO vultures while you're processing the worst news of your life. They love giving families PTSD in this place. The neurologist also refused to do any additional testing because "he had seen enough." They only did three neurological tests on my dad, when most hospitals do 5+. There were some incredibly kind and thoughtful nurses and PAs, but the majority of staff there were absolutely horrendous and unqualified. We were told my dad's CT scan showed severe anoxic brain injury in three regions of his brain. They said he wasn't brain dead, but wouldn't wake up either. A few days later, after the greedy OPO vultures swooped in, my mom decided to take my dad off of life support and donate his organs. The organ donation part was even more traumatic - the OPO never explained what the process would look like, what the room would look like, how many staff would be present etc......when we arrived that morning my dad seemed to be responding to commands like "blink, move your eyes up" (I'm not crazy - the NP saw it too). The other staff assured us that it was surely just brain stem reflexes, but I'm not so sure. They were really pushy and I don't think my mom felt like she could stop the process after signing the paperwork.....so they wheel him out of his hospital room in the ICU where he had big windows and a beautiful view and we walk down a long hallway lined with staff staring us down as we're bawling our eyes out (later learned this is called an honor walk. NOTHING honorable about it. It should be called the trauma walk). They then take him down to a cold, dark, terrifying OR room with no windows, surrounded by 25 medical staff and the OR representative (who reminded me of the Grim Reaper). They take him off of life support and we slowly watch him die for 35 minutes. Not even a minute after he took his last breath, the Grim Reaper told us "okay guys, gotta go now." I'm not even religious, but I couldn't help but think how inhumane it is to treat someone like this as they take their last breaths. We could have easily stayed in his ICU room and then rushed him to the OR in three minutes. Considering the profits OPOs make off of donated organs (billing insurance around $500,000 per organ), the least they can do for families is create a beautiful, calm, and serene place for their dying loved one before they start butchering them. That is a MUCH BETTER way to honor organ donors than the "honor walk." There was NO NEED for 25 staff to be there watching my dad die. They could have all (except for maybe one or two nurses) waited down the hall in the OR room he was taken to after he died to cut out his organs. My dad worked in pharmaceutical research and helped save so many lives....and this is how they repaid him. I always felt organ donation was a beautiful thing, but I promptly took myself off of the organ donation list after this horrifying experience.

Yelp
I had the best experience at Maine medical Center in Portland Maine. I had a wonderful Nurse. Her name in Krystal (with a K) last name started with a C. She was kind, patient and cared about my heart procedure. One of the best nurses I have ever had. Please be sure to pass this along to her and her supervisor. She's top notch. Lew Kingsbury.

Yelp
I visited the ER of Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine on Friday, October 24, 2025. I was having complications from bariatric surgery performed at this hospital on September 29, 2025. My complaints were extreme nausea and a sensation that medication and food / drink was getting stuck in my throat. The ER doctor at first was very responsive. Once it was clear that I was a surgical patient I did not see anyone again for seven hours in the emergency room. When my surgeon finally saw me at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, he decided to admit me promising that I would not be discharged without a plan and without feeling a little bit better. He ordered a study to make sure the digestive system was working properly. The next morning, that specific test was switched to one the did not require specific measures. Alternatively, a CT with contrast was performed and approved that everything below the esophagus was working properly. I was told I was going to stay at the hospital so that a plan could be developed. That would address my nausea. My surgeon assured me that I would not go home without a plan in place. After I had sent my visitor home, I was then told that I would be discharged with no plan in place. I was assured that if I call the office on Monday, I could have an endoscopy scheduled for Friday. That was their plan. So I am leaving the hospital now exactly the way I came in yesterday morning. This is unacceptable and I thought a larger facility like Maine Med would do much better than this.

Yelp
Horrible experience with Maine Transplant and being a living donor. Anything that could go wrong did. I ended up at Mass General where they saved my life.

Yelp
This is directed entirely at the billing department. A group of the laziest and most incompetent individuals I have ever seen. You guys will send things to collections while someone is actively trying to pay you. Just take my money, I am trying to give it to you. I have never in my life seen a group of people as terrible as you guys. I hope everyone who works in that billing department has nothing good ever happen to them again. May you all go through the worst things imaginable.

Yelp
Portland Maine Medical Family Surgery Waiting Room. A Person entered the waiting room to very loudly and proudly collect everyone's information. I mean each and every person, not just a contact for a group of people. She has it all written down on her little sheet of paper. Asking for the FULL NAME of the person in SURGERY that you are waiting for. What is Your Name, First and Last, and relationship to the person In surgery. What is Your telephone number. She is Going around the room asking each person in here. With no hope for guarding our private information at all, 6 Groups of people waiting all complied with answering her questions. I now know the names of relatives/friends and their phone numbers to everyone having surgery this morning. I feel like my privacy has been invaded and have left the waiting room to go somewhere more private. LOL Is that a HIPPA approved procedure?

Yelp
I live in Saco and my family and friends think I'm crazy for going to Portland and not Biddeford for all of my appointments. I had multiple very bad experiences with Biddeford and I started going to Portland just because I'm obsessed with big cities. But the care is MUCH better. I love it!

Susan G.

Yelp
Other folks say I'm dying of pulmonary embolism. But at ME Med, eh, whatever. Go to Mercy ER. Apparently my condition worries some folks, Maine med er is a joke, unless you're having a heart attack. Also, I was there in June, nobody works in billing anymore either. They are very happy to take $, you can't dispute a wrong bill, nobody works there anymore.

Christopher P.

Yelp
If there was a grade worse than F it would go straight to their emergency department. I've never been at an ER so unprofessional, disrespectful, and dangerous to the patient's situation/well being than this POS place. My blind sister-in-law was in the ER for almost 24 hours straight in the F***ing hallway with no place to rest, waiting for outrageous lengths of time to get any kind of attention let alone the most critical piece getting an MRI - they put a johnny on her about 21 hours since first mention of needing the MRI and lied that she was about to go down for it then. An hour and a half later, there was no response so I put my foot down and complained. I was gaslighted and condescended by the nurse manager. I travelled from Boston 2 hours in the middle of the wee hours of the morning to care for my sister-in-law and this hospital treated me and her like a piece of dog$h**. To add insult to injury, the night I got here I got a very warm racist welcome, when I was trying to find my way in the hospital to my sister-in-law and one of the front desk personnel spoke to me insulting my intelligence speaking to me like a kindergartener. I'm Asian and I felt racism on my back like hot coals down my shirt here.

Jaime J.

Yelp
I would place a 0 as they deserve..my mother had two strokes and a massive brain bleed Thanksgiving 24 morning..after surgery she was in the critical care unit..while in critical care the staff had requested a "sitter" to come sit with her for awhile as they did rounds..this was Saturday after Thanksgiving..I had been there nonstop-hadn't eaten showered nothing..my only concerns were my mother..the staff assured me I could go get some rest and feel safe enough doing so..literally an hour after I left and the sitter was in with my mother she took it upon herself to assault and abuse my mother in the vulnerable position she was in...I went through every single appropriate avenue they told me to..even reaching the presidents office to address the situation..no call backs..no answers..just avoidance..DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE THEY HAVE STAFF THAT ABUSE AND ASSULT PATIENTS AND REFUSE TO TAKE ACTION..the scariest part is that "sitter" is still working in the hospital with patients..

Christian Y.

Yelp
I was brought to the er I'm not going into why it a long story but I was there for 4 days and during my 4 day stay there I was dressed in hospital scrubs. after 2 days have passed and im still in the same clothes I was in when arrived stinking like a high school boys gym locker room and when I asked one of the nurses for a shower he said no

Yelp
I have never had better care in a Hospital!!! Almost a month ago I was attacked by the Desk Clerk at the super8 motel in westbrook, with a baseball bat! I honestly have to say I feel like part of a family rather than a Patient, which makes a great difference when healing from a severe Brain injury! I trust the care teams here 100%!!! I have been in ICU, critical care and now in the Rehab center. I truly can not say enough Good things about everyone in this Hospital!!!

Ella G.

Yelp
i usually go to Tufts medical center and due to bad weather we chose Maine medical. we have had over 30 ICU visits due to a chronic illness so I know what to expect . I waited over 20 minutes with difficulty breathing. Never hooked up to a monitor. I ended up leaving to go to a different hospital. If you value quality care go elsewhere. worse experience and I have been to hospitals all over the US. Our nurse was amazing and apologized over and over. She felt terrible for the lack of care. The billing person spent more time with us than the doctor.

Jonathan J.

Yelp
I have been visiting folks at Maine Med for years, in my work as a pastor I visit folks here several times a year. The staff have always treated me with respect and are very helpful. The care of the folks I have visited has been second to none within our state. It's clean, and although it can be hard to navigate at first but the signage is great so if you take your time you will find where you need to go. Parking is easy and usually not hard to find. If you or a loved one has serious health issues that need medical attention this is the place in Maine you want to be.

Raelene K.

Yelp
My sister just fought the fight of her life! I as well as the rest of the family are so impressed and greatful for the love, care and attention given to her and her treatment! Three entire ICU employees played a huge part in getting her well! They were very comforting to our family during this difficult time as well! This hospital is the reason she is here today! Thank you all!!

Yelp
I thought that this was a good place to work I got hired to work in the distribution warehouse as a courier as of 8/7/2023 I started work on 8/28/2023 I had a fall on the job I got hurt I could not work the doctor took me out of work saying not able to do work cuz I couldn't do the job. Had no way to pay my bills no way to pay my rent my income and all that kind of stuff got help from Biddeford general assistance. Finally went to see a surgeon because that's what the neurologist I saw suggested so I saw a doctor in December told me that my left like weakness left foot weakness and drop foot or all caused because of me having a pinched nerve bulging herniated disc in my back due to the fall. Even with a surge in saying that he has to do surgery the work was compensation company Synernet still denied my claim. I've been suffering and paying for 6 months now as of February 28th. I went back to the doctor that I saw first that declared that this was due to the fall on the job which didn't do any good. I said to him said is there anything I could do what kind of work could I do can I be on light duty what can I do he filled out paperwork I filed for unemployment because I had to find something if they didn't give me anything MaineHealth has not offered me anything so I filed for unemployment till I find something that I could do so I can have money coming in to live because I have the doctors note saying what the restrictions are what I can and cannot do so I could do a desk job definitely the doctor said they did not offer me anything. They say they care about people in the community and their employees how can you say you care about employees when you treat them the way I'm being treated by letting the department I'm in either saying that I got let go or I quit which I never did. I could not work after that because they said I couldn't do the job I had to go through employee health and finally went to my primary care doctor to get an MRI because neither the employee health or workers comp company would order an MRI after that MRI I saw the neurologist he said I think you need to see a surgeon so I did and the surgeon said the same thing that it's due to on the job. How come I'm suffering to live while the CEO and everybody else it's up in a big offices that get paid a heck a lot more than I do get to live happy have money. I don't think it's fair I made a complaint to the CEO I don't think main Health should be saying they care about their employees and people because they don't if they did they would say hey we'll help him this way but because I was only there a month I couldn't get short-term disability I couldn't get anything so from what it says on the paperwork I got from unemployment that we parted ways or they fired me so I got to find out what but watch out if you go work for them because they're another company just like another company I worked for that I got hurt at fought me and we didn't go to court luckily. Now I see why some of the employees were saying things to me when I got hired there I understand but I don't think it's very fair that the company does what they do to people what is the point of having workers compensation insurance in this world if every time somebody gets hurt they have two doctors behind them saying it's because of that that they're going to fight them still. Why did it take me having to go get an attorney to stand up against these guys so that I could get what I deserve 6 months worth of being out of work is not right at all. No income no nothing somebody needs to stand up and it shouldn't be just me saying that main Health says they care about people and employees then why are they doing what they're doing why isn't the CEO doing something about it when I contacted him we'll see what happens tomorrow I'm contacting the unemployment and I'm going to appeal this decision cuz I've got paperwork from Doctor showing that I couldn't work then I got paperwork showing that I could go back to work on this restrictions and they didn't offer me a job doing anything where I could sit at a desk. Only in the state of Maine this kind of stuff happens I think I should contact the governor's office about this whole thing and try to see what I can do try to get a petition going on something here and see maybe the nurses will see this and read this you guys are on contract I'm not a contract I'm a worker worker for the hospital and I still have to have back surgery eventually and nobody wants to do anything. I'm going to fight this tooth and nail to the end and I will never say anything good about this employer I won't run them down but I'm not going to say anything good because of what I've gone through with them.

Raluca O.

Yelp
The worst ER department. Never will recommend to anyone. Waited the whole night to be seen. The staff did not care, no one asked me anything and they were annoyed when I KEPT BEGGING TO BE SEEN BY A DOCTOR. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

Yelp
I've been to Maine Med many times over the years. I've parked both in the garage and on the street and in the dedicated lot near the main entrance. Staff is friendly, the food is OK (my dad raves about it) and it's pretty easy to get around. As a patient I went into a different entrance, signed in and went to the specific unit. I remember having a positive weekly experience despite the condition I was in. I trust you're in good care when you're at Maine Med.

Jay G.

Yelp
This hospital continues to underwhelm. My daughter was admitted to an ER room 3.5 hours ago and has not been seen by a doctor. She is in terrible pain, but the nurse can't even consult a doctor because no doctor has been assigned. The nurses are typically terrific, but the quality of care is substandard. It is CYA medicine without regard to the patient. If I ran my business like this, I would have no customers and would be bankrupt in no time.

Randi W.

Yelp
This company is entirely unethical and unequipped. Administration and practitioners shared my medical records with other parties without my legal authorization, thus breaking patient confidentiality. Administration and practitioners scheduled appointments for dates that I was unaware, and sent bills when I missed appointments I had no idea I was supposed to attend. Administration and practitioners repeatedly made false claims about my insurance coverage (i.e. assured me that ear wax removal was included in co-pay, assured me blood work was covered in full by my insurance at the time). Administration and practitioners were not transparent about policies, and this led to large bills for unnecessary procedures (I am in great physical health) that I cannot fully pay due to poverty-level income. Practitioners provided insufficient treatments and diagnoses, which then exacerbated symptoms, on top of aforementioned administrative tomfoolery (i.e. inappropriately sharing records, scheduling appointments without notifying patients or even seeing if patient is available for scheduled time). Any company that is not transparent about policies to clients is negligent and unethical. Maine Medical acts in accordance to negligence and unethical practice.

Yelp
Do not go to this hospital. If you are sick, drive 2 hours to Mass General. My brother has been sick since April. He lost 30 pounds. A team of Doctors at MMC could not figure out what was wrong. You would think they would have him meet with a Nutritionist after losing so much weight. Instead, they remove his Gallbladder! In August he was so sick he could barely walk. We encouraged he go to Boston. The Doctors knew immediately what was wrong: Lymphoma. He wasted months at MMC. It astonishes me that a team of Doctors could not figure it out yet the Doctors in Boston knew immediately.

Yelp
I will never ever ever ever ever ever CHOOSE this hospital for my medical needs. Their billing department is incompetent as all get out. Over 2 years later my delivery stuff is finally taken care of. Even after I originally paid 3 months after he was born. They don't know the first thing about communicating with insurance. What a frigging headache this place is. Can you hire robots instead?

Kev N.

Yelp
I am at the medical center waiting for information on my wife about her surgery to find out when I can see her and they would not tell me anything extremely in helpful yet my wife's sister just walked in and asked the front desk about my wife and they told her what was going on with my wife yet they would not give me any info nor have they called me as promised I have been in the waiting room the entire time yet they did not give me information that my wife is currently waiting for a room the hospital did not even come into waiting room to tell me this was the bean tower room wing I'm not impressed I will be calling the highest person possible about this tommrow .

Yelp
In fairness, both of my parents have been treated at Maine Med, and my father's experience with a quintuple cardiac bypass and subsequent therapies (in 2016) was positive. Fast forward to this year (2021), when my mother was taken in with a very grim prognosis due to pervasive internal bleeding. Rather than consulting the appropriate professionals (i.e., a hematologist), her "team" spent two weeks essentially figuring out and treating nothing until my 81 year old dad mentioned the possible diagnosis WE HAD FOUND ON THE INTERNET that matched with her symptoms. Hospital records show that in the meantime, my mother was delirious and confused and being told she was sick due to her "heavy drinking" which supposedly caused cirrhosis of the liver. My mother was never a big drinker, and her autopsy (which we had to pay for out of pocket) indicated that she NEVER had cirrhosis of the liver--and this is just one example of their misdiagnoses. Due to covid, I was not allowed to visit my mother and I was told I should be thankful because that meant she wasn't dying (which she was). When the hospital finally allowed my father and I to visit my mother, we made the extremely hard decision to transfer her into hospice. During our conversation, the team discussed our being able to visit her over the weeks or months that followed. After we left, unbeknownst to us, the team withdrew ALL of her medication (including antibiotics) that had been keeping her stable. This plan was not ever discussed with us, and I only discovered this had happened by reading her medical records. *My mom died within hours of her being taken off her medication, meaning that my family and I were effectively robbed of our last days with her. * Review of my mother's medical records shows a blatant lack of coordination and communication between treatment team members (at best) and callous incompetence at worst. There was no transparency with our family, our last wishes were flouted, and my mom spent the last two weeks of her life effectively being told it was her fault she was dying. Unless your loved one's diagnosis is very clear cut, do not send them here: spare your family from suffering like we have.*

Yelp
I have to say I did not experience this myself right now my daughter did firsthand. I am a pediatric nurse and have been for the last 20 years and I have never heard of anything so screwed up from a facility. The Fact that my daughter had to deal with this crap considering it was her first child is truly a shame on you people. My daughter went in there to deliver a baby, this was her first baby and had been turned away two previous times, and she has had no Lamaze classes due to Covid or anything else no preparation nothing from the hospital or her obstetrician. She delivered her baby on Thursday morning and was left with her partner and the baby for hours No nurse coming in to check to see if the baby was latching on to her for breastfeeding , not even showing her how to do it, until later in the day. This is a first time mother. When she delivered they didn't give her any information ie...time, length, just weight. When she completed birth certificate when she was leaving she saw the time. She still doesn't know how long the baby was for length only that she weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz. Thank God for her partner who had two children from a previous marriage because my daughter would not have known what to do. I told her to call the nurse to show her how to give her a bath I thought this was something that had to be done by a new mother especially a first time mother before discharge. Their is usually a checklist to be done. She was never told anything about her Apgar scores or What they even meant. Then when they showed up at the hospital the night before they were starving. The next day because they had been there since midnight they were told they had to pay for his meal which this was not communicated to my daughter by her obstetrician office before hand. Even her meal was very small, it was smaller than what he got for what he had to pay for and they were still both hungry. It seems to me a lot of things have fallen through the cracks, at this facility. I am the grandmother she was never even given any type of baby hat, blanket, gift bag, diaper bag, or anything that is given to new mothers not even coupons. She is a breast-feeding mother but she might change her mind not even a hat or a blanket with the hospitals name on it to keep for a keepsake. Are things that bad these days they can't even help a new mother out. I would seriously think again before having any children at this hospital if this is the way things are done especially if you are a first time mother and don't know how to do anything. She never even had an opportunity to go and view the area where she would be delivering. Her partner was never allowed in for office visits he went to one ultrasound got to stay 3 feet away behind a glass screen and after about five minutes was sent out the door and couldn't even stay with her for her appointment which is ridiculous considering he was already in the building in there with her. To say that I am not happy with this facility would be an understatement. If someone would like to reach out to me that would be fine but I don't want my daughter having to deal with his crap any longer. She should've been given stuff that new mothers are given they brought up a prescription that they wanted her to take vitamin D the pharmacist came up and delivered expecting money right there on the spot they were never told about this ahead of time there's something not right here. Angry grandma and you don't mess with an angry grandma.

Yelp
I had a problem. They cut me open, fixed it, and sewed me back together. Problem solved. I deducted a star because they sent me home with more Oxycodone than they should have.

Yelp
I utilized the ER at Maine Med on 12/11 and received excellent care. This review is directed at the billing department, not at the medical team in the ER. I called Maine Health billing on 12/28 to report that some services rendered were not paid by my insurance carrier because the claims were filed under an older insurance number. I wanted to alert them that they had incorrectly billed the wrong insurance plan and provided the correct information (which they already had as I presented my insurance card upon arrival to the ER). The Maine Health billing representative proceeded to get snippy and I called her out on her inappropriate and rude behavior. She responded by saying I was the one being rude. I eventually reported it to a supervisor and recommended they review their employee training modules. I can only say "wow"...the only reason I called them is that they screwed up on the billing and rather than own it and possibly apologize the representative behaved badly.

Yelp
Do not go here, drive to Boston instead. You won't get service, they forget about you and don't keep up with pain meds, my mom had an organ removed and they checked her out within a couple hours BUT forgot about her instead of bringing her a wheel chair she had to walk out by herself and also go get her own meds from the pharmacy.

Yelp
The work they do here is great! Took excellent care of my newborn baby. This review is more focused on the food items, since not many reviews cover this. The hummus plate is probably the best item in the menu. The cheeseburger is also excellent considering it's hospital food. The grilled cheese I found to be good with the addition of a tomato slice. Average time to get an order from a about 45 min from the time you place it with room service.

Yelp
This is a great hospital! The staff are all very nice and the facilities are well maintained. The cafeteria always has a wide variety of food options and the prices are very reasonable. There is also another cafe that has alternative options, like lobster rolls!!!! Pretty tasty too!

Yelp
The mediocre rating is related specifically to being able to navigate this enormous complex and receiving directions from staff/volunteers. I had an idea where elevators were from previous visits but no idea there were so many new elevators, all with names and nothing to say where they went other than the obvious UP and down. The first volunteer, behind the reception desk, stared blankly, shook his head, and pointed at the other volunteer who was busy with someone else (then left WITH the someone else) saying he had no idea where an echo-cardiogram would be performed. Must have been his first day. I found my way to the main elevators, saw myriad signs and was approached, while I was looking dazed at the signage, by a woman in blue hospital garb who clearly could see I needed help. The only sign remotely related said Cardiac ICU which I thought was not for me. She agreed and said take the elevator to the second floor. ALL the signage at the elevator did not say anything about echo-cardiograms on the second floor. Upon the elevator door opening and stepping out - directly in front of me a hand made sign with an arrow, followed later by another, and I found my way. Upon arriving at the correct desk everything went swimmingly from there while I was in this department. Less well when I tried to retrieve some medical records, but this review could get really long.......

Yelp
nurses and doctors and other workers are very kind and caring! I would defiantly recommend this hospital! Many family members of mine have gone there and they are caring towards my family and others! Food is amazing good prices!

Yelp
I suffered a heart attack in May of 2022. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN FEELING WELL AFTER 8 TO 10 WEEKS AFTER A DOUBLE BYPASS SURGERY! BUT I have suffered the effects of a HOSPITAL ACQUIRED BACTERIAL INFECTION, which nearly killed me several times in my extended stay at MMC. Somebody employed by MMC failed to do their job properly, an I hope they get the karma they deserve. It is not a clean hospital. As I said I was there for a long time. As an example, I was in one two-bed room for more than 10 days, and my floor was not cleaned nor was it sanitized for a full 10 days. My over the bed table was never disinfected. Another example--I was NEVER asked if I would like a towel and wash cloth morning or nighttime. No wonder it is a breeding ground for bacteria!! Also after having open heart surgery and a "killer" cough from intubations X6, a night charge nurse allowed a woman with a constant cough to be admitted to my room. I demanded a change of rooms as I still don't know if she had a Covid cough! And I'd say the fact that NOT EVEN ONE hospital "dignitary" even made the slightest hint of an apology for the hell they caused me to suffer, and continue to suffer every day until today's date of 10/8/22 from May 19!!! MMC should be kissing my feet as my bills totaled more than 1/2 Million dollars!!

Yelp
I spent a lot of time here before my son was born and after he was born at 28 weeks. The nurses and doctors are amazing and the NICU staff are top notch. Our main NICU nurse , Penny, was AMAZING!! She explained everything so well that doctors starting asking if I was a nurse because Penny had helped me understand all the medical jargon. The room service coffee is horrible, but the nurses always made sure to get me one of their special stash while I was staying there. The whoopie pies at the coffee cart in the lobby are addicting. If you have a difficult pregnancy, make sure you go here. They saved my son's life.

Yelp
There is absolutely no one here and I waited 3 hrs...with a herion addict tweaking next to me the whole time...I'm a college student and I got here at 11pm and it's now 2am and I'm in a room but no one has come in yet to see me

Yelp
We could not believe how dirty this hospital is. First off, everyone going from the parking garage into the hospital has to go to P8 Level, when you get off that elevator there is not even a trash receptacle before you enter the hospital. In the entry hallway, there is a hand sanitizer dispenser on the wall along with a box of tissues. But no wastebasket in which to place your used tissue, so they either end up on the floor or you can take the germy mess into the hospital with you. Inside, the trash receptacles are often overflowing. The patient rooms are too warm so they have portable fans. If you have lung surgery they might as well just shoot you dead, because the fans blowing on your face are so filthy....they have dust imbedded onto all the blades and cobwebs and dirt on the fan grill. F I L T H Y and D I S G U S T I N G and I have sent two photos to the health department. No wonder the poor patients are all coughing. And one final note....the cafeteria is an embarrassment Nothing has changed since we were there 20 years ago. No healthy entree options just burgers, pizza, hot dogs and grease. The hot dogs are tri-colored...grey, brown and greenish. The burgers are definitely not all-beef but made of gristle and fat and leather. Yes there is a salad bar but who would dare go near it? The waiting rooms for CCITU are overcrowded and disgusting. There is a dusty dirty vacuum cleaner sitting in the waiting room corner, it looks like the dust bag hasn't been emptied for years. ....apparently we visitors are supposed to vacuum the place ourselves when things get too germy and unacceptable. Mavis was an old lady visiting her husband. We all had to lift our feet every two hours whenever Mavis decided to vacuum the joint.

Yelp
I came to Maine Medical Center this past February after learning I had to have my gallbladder removed. Only being 21 years old, I had never had major surgery before or ever lived without an organ! Before my surgery I was so nervous, just waiting to be wheeled into the operating room was a nightmare. I was so scared, I had begun balling my eyes out worried how I would feel when I woke up. Everyone around me that worked at MMC though were so kind, the minute I was put on an IV my worries and cares just melted away. I laid there waiting to go into the OR and didn't feel one care or worry except waking up with no pain anymore. Once I was wheeled into the OR, all the surgeons around me began joking around saying, "Don't be scared, you don't need your gallbladder anyways!!" I didn't even count to two before I passed out a sleep and then awoke from surgery an hour later. That night I was so surprised to see I would be having chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy, bread, ginger ale (my favorite), AND PIE for dinner! I was like holy mackerel, I get pie and it was good too!! All of the nurses were so friendly and kind, they were happy to see I could get up and walk around and didn't need to stay over-night. My mom had HUGE surgery at MMC two years ago and both her and I really had a great experience being there. There's a reason why Maine Medical Center is one of the best hospitals in the country and both my mom and I know why!

Yelp
Maine's best hospital. I have had 3 visits in 5 months. While it would be awesome if our bodies were like machinery, with clear and direct repair manuals, the body is far too complex. As the team at MMC has sought to treat my illness, I have been treated with respect and kindness. Great staff. Lots of Doctors who are very intelligent, facilities upgrade with many new features. Wifi for patients. A1 nursing staff. I have spent more than 20 days in the hospital in 2010. ER admissions are the weakest area. Prepare to spend 2 hours in the lobby before being accessed and then being returned for an hour or so, Once you are seen by a doc, plan another 3-4 hours of waiting for a bed if they admit you. Of course, it all depends on how busy things are and the severity of your condition. Once you are in, your care will be solid. As long as you allow time, you'll have a good experience. If you expect all your wishes to be granted in 5 minutes, you'll hate MMC and every other Hospital.

Yelp
We have a little one in the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital of Maine Medical, and I am so so pleased with the amazing staff! Every nurse has been kind, helpful, friendly and most importantly, supported us and our kiddo as best they could! Every single nurse we've seen deserves a medal! The doctors are great too! This kind of service is really what matters here, so four-stars all the way. That said navigating to and around the hospital should be easier. Our first visit we were totally lost and went in circles trying to find the correct elevators. Now we know where we're going and we've figured it out, but signage could be better. The cafe is eh. I've eaten at hospitals before (more than I'd like to) and this cafeteria is pretty bad. The salad bar is small and the hot meal options are pretty sad. I expect a little more from a hospital in a city with such great food. At least the prices are low for employees & families. While I won't be raving about the food or the building itself, the staff are where it counts! Thank you for all your hard work!

Yelp
Stopping by MMC was one of those spur of the moment ideas you tend to get only when in intense agony at five in the morning and there's not a lot open. We had heard about it at another hospital who said their ENT (ear nose and throat) was excellent. Luckily, we had called ahead for reservations, but since we were a little early they didn't seem too busy and it probably would have been okay to just walk in. I would have absolutely died if had not been able to get in, so I am glad we called ahead anyway. No, seriously, I would have died. I can't remember the name of the appetizer, but the nurse warned me that a lot of people felt the room spin - it was that good. It was good, yes, but not as good as advertised, though I will admit I felt pretty positive about it. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't have a second helping: it would have made the trip significantly more enjoyable, since it was the first time I didn't have any pain in about a week. The antibiotics I could take or leave. They really didn't do much for me, but the morphine was great - especially intravenously. The serving sizes could have been bigger for what we were paying, though. Frankly, even the oxycodone, though plated well in tasting-menu style polyethylene cups, wasn't really everything it was cracked up to be. Given my lack of interest in the antibiotics, we finally decided to try the surgery. I think it was a good option, though it did take a while to prepare. What made up for it was that once it did get there, I don't even remember getting through it. That entree was absolutely lights out! Be careful though, because it does have some sharp edges that can leave your throat a bit sore. You'll want to wash it down with some morphine. One odd note: I swear to God I had two tonsils when I went in. Now? No idea. I will note that one downside is the guy next to me kept asking me to get his waitress, er... nurse, all the damn time. He kept dropping his fork or something and couldn't manage to get his nurse on his own. Kind of intrusive for a guy just trying to manage mind-numbingly intense pain at two in the morning. That, and my IV drips got empty several times, which made the machine beep incessantly. If they can do it with coffee at any diner across the country, why not top me off when I am getting low and drop off some extra morphine and sugar along the way? The nursing staff was on the whole pretty awesome though. They were busy but still attentive and I may or may not have got one to cough up the wifi password while I was there. The doctor was efficient and precise, if not entirely a people-person. Hey, that's why they run the back of the house, right? I'd go back, though I am not sure I'd want to any time soon.

Yelp
I had day surgery here recently and every employee we came in contact with was professional and on top of their game. Having been the first time having a procedure at this hospital I walked away impressed and very satisfied with the entire experienced. Oh and Dr. Foust-Wright and her team ROCKS!

Yelp
This hospital is horrible. Many of the staff in NICU are incompetent and disrespectful.

Yelp
I just wonder why should we wait at the emergency room for long hours to get to the doctor?? Why there isn't more than that doctor who they usually say is the only doctor at the emergency department?? It calls emergency department !! People usually come to this department when they have really bad pain or they are in emergency situation, So patients should be under doctors hands after five minutes of their entry to the hospital.

Yelp
It's got that New England charm to it. If you want to build a bigger hospital, just keep building an add-on to what you've already got. It's a maze in there! To get from South Entrance to Dana Center is a longer walk than one might think. I can't say much for services, but the food was ok. Salad bar priced by weight. How much, I'm not sure. I just hope I bring enough cash. One time I did pay $3 for a salad. Strawberry shortcake was an interesting use of ingredients. It should've been called strawberry biscuit. The frozen strawberry toppings were placed on a buttered biscuit and topped with a dollop of whip cream. Looked tastier than it actually tasted.
