Stopping by MMC was one of those spur of the moment ideas you tend to get only when in intense agony at five in the morning and there's not a lot open. We had heard about it at another hospital who said their ENT (ear nose and throat) was excellent. Luckily, we had called ahead for reservations, but since we were a little early they didn't seem too busy and it probably would have been okay to just walk in. I would have absolutely died if had not been able to get in, so I am glad we called ahead anyway. No, seriously, I would have died.
I can't remember the name of the appetizer, but the nurse warned me that a lot of people felt the room spin - it was that good. It was good, yes, but not as good as advertised, though I will admit I felt pretty positive about it. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't have a second helping: it would have made the trip significantly more enjoyable, since it was the first time I didn't have any pain in about a week.
The antibiotics I could take or leave. They really didn't do much for me, but the morphine was great - especially intravenously. The serving sizes could have been bigger for what we were paying, though. Frankly, even the oxycodone, though plated well in tasting-menu style polyethylene cups, wasn't really everything it was cracked up to be.
Given my lack of interest in the antibiotics, we finally decided to try the surgery. I think it was a good option, though it did take a while to prepare. What made up for it was that once it did get there, I don't even remember getting through it. That entree was absolutely lights out! Be careful though, because it does have some sharp edges that can leave your throat a bit sore. You'll want to wash it down with some morphine. One odd note: I swear to God I had two tonsils when I went in. Now? No idea.
I will note that one downside is the guy next to me kept asking me to get his waitress, er... nurse, all the damn time. He kept dropping his fork or something and couldn't manage to get his nurse on his own. Kind of intrusive for a guy just trying to manage mind-numbingly intense pain at two in the morning. That, and my IV drips got empty several times, which made the machine beep incessantly. If they can do it with coffee at any diner across the country, why not top me off when I am getting low and drop off some extra morphine and sugar along the way?
The nursing staff was on the whole pretty awesome though. They were busy but still attentive and I may or may not have got one to cough up the wifi password while I was there. The doctor was efficient and precise, if not entirely a people-person. Hey, that's why they run the back of the house, right?
I'd go back, though I am not sure I'd want to any time soon.
