Came to Mainland China Bistro after seeing their reels on Instagram. The orange beef was the dish that pulled me in.
Came in on a Friday afternoon. Its a huge place, plenty of tables, large amounts of natural sunlight, but the smell was overwhelming. Smelled like incense or something? I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it was so nauseating until finally my nose just got used to it.
It took a few minutes to get seated because there was only one person helping run the whole place it seemed.
According to my receipt his name is Jason. Everything took a little while, but I have to give him credit, he was hustling and running around.
We ordered vegetable dumplings, a pork eggroll, orange crispy beef, and general tso tofu.
The vegetable dumplings were surprising. I thought they would be bland, but they were flavorful.
The pork eggroll was pretty standard. Nice and crispy.
I asked for my orange beef extra crispy and their solution was instead to bring me sauce on the side. Which is okay, but the meal didn't look super appetizing. The sauce was incredibly orange forward. Which, obviously, it's orange beef, but it didn't taste like there was a ton of other seasonings in it. It tasted just like I squeezed an orange on it. I ended up using the sauce that came with the eggroll for the most part. Also even without the sauce, the beef wasn't incredibly crispy. I could see how tossing it and all that sauce would make it immediately soggy.
While the flavor of the general tso tofu was really good, the chunks of tofu were just too big. They need to cut them up a bit more. With all the sauce that's on them, and the portion they give you, which is really large, they probably wouldn't reheat well being at the size that they are.
With our food and two fountain drinks, the total only came to $56.71 which, for the sizes of the meal, seemed like a steal. I would probably come back again to try their Singapore noodles as a table next to us ordered it and it looked amazing. But they could definitely work on adding some more service so that one person doesn't have to run around (literally, he was running) by themselves. Also, get rid of the scent. When people walking to a restaurant they want to smell the good food that's being made, not some weird artificial incense type smell.
