"The French bistro inside The Hugh bed & breakfast takes full advantage of the region’s fresh seafood in classics like moules frites, swimming in a Riesling-butter sauce under a nest of fries, and bouillabaisse, anchored with local fish and scallops. If you’re tapped out on seafood, though, there are plenty of other options, including farm-raised duck a l’orange. Book a table inside the candlelit dining room to celebrate a special occasion. It’s BYOB, so don’t forget a bottle of champagne." - regan stephens, candis mclean, sydney mcelwee, tonya russell

Recent Trip to Maison Bleue at The Hugh B&B in Cape May did not disappoint! Shout out to Dorothy Birchall Shuman and her support staff for the excellent service. Russ Wheeler and the back of the house killed it! I love French cuisine and was really looking forward to this one for my Birthday 🎂. Duck appetizer was a hit. The Humboldt Fog cheese was amazing. Next moving on the the escargot 🐌 over the puff pastry. I have never had it prepared like this before and I don’t think I want it any other way now. So delicious. The baked oysters with leek fondue and caviar were probably my personal favorite. I could probably eat a dozen of them. So creamy and delicious. The steak and scallops with the Cafe de Paris sauce that was “plucked” out of France 🇫🇷 by the owners was to die for. I could put this sauce on anything. So rich. The apple birthday dessert and the Crème Brûlée were both very good but I would have to say it was the best Crème Brûlée I’ve ever had. So satisfying cracking the sugar shell on top. Once again highly recommended from the food to the service to the atmosphere. Was sat inside but they also have a nice porch with comfy chairs and couches that looks onto Washington Street and even has overhead heaters for the colder months. The inside dining was extraordinary. The French music mix along with the lighting definitely set the tone for the evening. I felt like I was in Lyon but only 15 minutes away from my doorstep. 10/10 experience, will be back!

We are staying at The Hugh Inn and decided to try Maison Bleue Bistro for dinner. It far exceeded our expectations. Every dish was excellent.

Would leave 10 stars! This was one of the best meals my husband and I have had in years! This was our first date night out together since having our baby 6 months ago, and we wanted to try something a little different. Some of the adventurous dishes on the menu caught our attention, and it was walking distance from the rental we were staying in. The ambiance is very quaint and cozy. We sat outside on the porch and there was a beautiful late summer breeze. Brought our own bottle of red. Was told they do sell bottles of local wine there, but we opted to BYOB which is a great option. Our waitress was very lovely. (I think her name was Erica?) Kind and attentive! The meal and coursing was done very nicely. We ordered a bunch to try. The standouts of the night were the foie gras with figs and hazelnuts (special) and the tartare. The foie was so rich and fatty, but the sweet sauce balanced it out. The tartare was extremely light and fresh. The escargot was good too-The garlic sauce was delicious. For the first time trying snails we were surprised- they are meaty/earthy. (I liked that they had a mushroom option on the menu for those who don’t eat meat!) For mains we had the summer truffle pasta and the filet. Dessert was the crème brûlée. Very smooth, and a clean vanilla cream flavor. (Saw the burger go by, and that looked phenomenal as well.) This was such a lovely place for a romantic date night. Next time we are in the area on vacation, we would absolutely try this again. If you are in the fence about the menu- don’t be intimidated! Everything was done to perfection!

We started with the baked oyster as appetizers. It was delicious but the cheese kinda overpowered the oysters. I then got the filet of salmon which was so perfect. The skin was crispy yet the flesh was soft and tender. What made it better was the sauce too. My husband got the fluke. The sauce was a bit sweeter than we would’ve liked but generally it was good. Then we finished off with creme brûlée and tiramisu— both were great options. Btw we went for my birthday dinner. My husband indicated so in the reservation. But there was nothing from the restaurant. We went to another fine dining restaurant for my husband’s birthday that used the same reservation system and they had a little birthday card and the server even wished him a happy birthday. Just keep that in mind if you expect that from the restaurant!

Wow!!! Just an incredible meal! The food was tasty and portions were healthy. Two thumbs up on Madison Bleue Bistro! First time here and very impressive. For starters we enjoyed fresh oyster and French Onion soup. The oysters were definitely fresh and delectable. The soup was one of the best versions I’ve ever tasted, loaded with cheese and two pieces of bread. Our mains were Filet au poivre and day scallops. The steak was cooked to perfection medium rare in cognac cream sauce. Six scallops in maque choux corn. bacon beurre blanc. Again the seafood was fresh and amazing. We also had a side of their wonderful truffle fries. Finished it off with a crème brûlée which was sweet and made me want to take another trip back to Paris. All and all a top ranked French meal and I didn’t even have to leave Jersey.

Outstanding contemporary French menu with a few bistro add ons like burgers, a small wine list, and just a few desserts. Eating on the porch in good weather is sublime, and the design of the entire place is beautiful. Highly recommended.

Stylish and elegant setting with indulgent dishes, top tier service at a beautiful B & B just off the Washington Street Mall. Worth every step you take to get there. Dorothy was our server and made sure everyone was content. We will dream of the French onion soup with short rib broth. We hosted a private party here and Every single person was satisfied and impressed. They also have lots of Gluten Free options!

Based on the great reviews my friend and I had read we were excited to dine at this new BYOB establishment in Cape May. We had mixed reviews of the variety of items we ordered. While the oysters were served with a delicious chive mignonette, they were room temperature. The duck confit was crispy and delicious! We really enjoyed the lemon butter sauce that the fluke special was cooked in, but unfortunately the fish was over cooked. The coq au vin was our favorite part of the meal. It was moist, cooked perfectly, and in a delightful sauce.

Yelp
Great Service, Great Food, Great Ambiance. Great. Did I mention it was Great? I'm literally adding more greats to meet the minimum character requirements.

Yelp
We ate here over the summer. Got easy reservations 2 days before. The hostess was nice and sat us at a lovely table. The decor was beautiful with art and lights. Waitress was helpful recommending dishes. The food was delicious, I had the scallops and. My husband the filet at poivre. We split oysters for our app. My only complaint was how fast they moved us through the meal, even though they were not full. We were Driving from CT and we made an early reservation so we knew we had dinner plans. We sat at 6:02, and had had apps and finished our entrees by 6:39, we could have stayed longer and had dessert, but at $187 for a 37 min experience felt like a lot. Overall good experience, just wish for it to last longer

Yelp
02/14/2024 Located in The Hugh B&B, my wife and I, my sister and brother in law all enjoyed a very nice meal... with excellent service. My wife started with the Baked South Bay Salt Oysters, which she raved about for days after. I had the beet salad. Good, but no raving happening. My wife and I both had the Bouillabaisse, which was terrific. My SIL had the Duck l'orange, while my BIL had a 'pasta of the day'. It's a little tight sitting where we were, but the service was terrific. We were a little disappointed that there was no decaf coffee to be had. Not sure if they were out, but it seemed more like decaf just wasn't on the menu. Make plans for this wonderful BYOB restaurant.

Yelp
Moody upscale dining right in downtown Cape May! This brand new spot features fancy French cuisine - something the town was lacking before! I would definitely recommend for a date night or fancy and romantic evening! We started with the steak tartare, which was heavily seasoned with herbs and Dijon, but that I enjoyed nonetheless. The wagyu cheeseburger was delicious. The coq au vin was super flavorful and gigantic! And the prime strip steak's Maitre D'Hotel butter was unforgettable. The definitely know how to do fresh RIGHT! Absolutely on the higher end price wise, and they're still working out some kinks with service, but overall I would still recommend for the only French on the beach and the romantic vibes!

Yelp
This place was amazing, to die for. This is a must eat place in cape may, just make sure you reserve in advance of going. Everything from here tasted amazing. The tuna tartare was so fresh as well at the chips that came with it. The potato leek soup was so rich and and light at the same time. I would get this again. The muscles and fries were humongous, I definitely should of gotten less appetizers. I would get this again as well, the fries were super crispy and I got it as truffled flavor which was amazing. The muscles were fresh too This is a great date night spot!

Yelp
Went with a group for a Christmas party! food & atmosphere was amazing! Our server Dottie did not skip a beat, she was so on point fur everyone's needs! Can't wait to go back

Yelp
This cute little spot is located just behind Cape May's famous Washington St. Mall, a pedestrian walking street full of fun shops, restaurants, & sweets stores. We dropped in without a reservation just as they were opening so we had the place to ourselves - the overall vibe was a tad strange being the only ones there. We dined in June '23 & believe they were still quite new and working some things out. Their team was very sweet and we enjoyed the atmosphere's potential and cute decor. FOOD Fishermen's Eggs: poached Beach Plum hen egg, tarragon cream, sautéed PEI mussels, toast - amazing! Would eat it again right now. Moules Frites: Mussels, Riesling butter sauce, grilled lemon, fines herbes, hand-cut fries - nice to get some good mussels, would have liked a touch more flavor in the broth, but the saltiness of the fries complimented them well. My husband said his steak was just ok. We both really *loved* our app though. We didn't realize it was a BYOB so didn't bring a bottle with us, but they do have some cute NA drinks or there's a liquor store near by.

Rebecca W.

Yelp
We loved it!! We sat outside on the porch which was gorgeous. It was fun to watch people and carriages walk by as we enjoyed local oysters, a local white wine, I got the scallops which were prepared perfectly. We shared the tiramisu and everything was spectacular.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Lovely. Beautiful ambiance, very chic. Service was delightful from our hostess, who took my wrap, to our waitress who wrapped my salmon skin to take home for our pup. We had the baked oysters, the cassoulet, and the salmon. All were delicious and we left very full. The only part that wasn't quite up to par was the crostini served with the cassoulet. It tasted like citronella- char, herbs, olive oil,it was just off. Everyone around us was as delighted as we were with their meals. We will be back. BYOB, parking readily available.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for the first time while on vacation. We were seated right next to the kitchen, so our area was pretty busy with waitstaff, but not annoyingly so. We were served warm bread and whipped butter. To start, we ordered the mussels appetizer which I thought was quite delicious. This left us with high hopes for the main courses. For dinner I ordered the scallops and my husband ordered the bouillabaisse. We also shared the mac and cheese side. The scallops in both of our meals were cooked well but neither of us were huge fans of the sauces that came with them. The star of the meal was truly the mac and cheese. We enjoyed it quite a bit and it left us feeling full. Overall, we had a pleasant evening dining there.

Yelp
Maison Blue has a lovely ambiance and excellent service. However the food doesn't make the grade. We were a part of three. I ordered escargot which is not a difficult appetizer to pull off. Over the last 40 years I've probably eaten it in a hundred restaurants. It is always good! After all, the escargot themselves aren't flavorful but they are cooked in garlic butter, and absorb that flavor. So imagine my surprise when I bit into escargot and discovered it was sitting in mound of barely cooked chopped garlic mixed with unsalted fish stock or some kind of fat, or both. Whatever it was the chef had also added sugar! The escargot was tasteless, not having been cooked in garlic butter sauce. It tasted like a combination of sharp undercooked garlic with a sweet aftertaste. Yuck. I sent it back. The waitress was gracious. Based on the taste of the dish I can only conclude that whoever cooked it had never tasted escargot in a restaurant, any restaurant. The rest of the meal was edible but not worth the hefty tab. I had fluke ($46) which was okay but not prepared well enough to justify the price. My husband rated his bouillabaisse ($46) 3.5 stars out of 5. Our other dinner companion rated her scallops ($48) the same. I can't account for the excellent reviews here. I live in the Washington, DC metro area. There are restaurants there that charge over $40 for entrees, but they justify the prices with world class food. This food just didn't measure up.

Yelp
Thank you to all of the staff, our server Anna was knowledgeable, kind, and service over all was on point. The food was delicious, the portions were not your typical French plate sizing, (thank goodness). Everyone at our table ordered 4 different starters and 4 different main courses. Every plate was empty. So good!!!! The Hugh is a pretty B&B and the restaurant atmosphere was eclectic and fun. We run a B&B in town and I will gladly tell our guests to come to Maison Bleue for an outstanding meal and experience. Thank you, Rochelle

Yelp
I got the "cape may surf and turf" and my wife got the duck. We also shared the pate and a gem salad. Everything was pretty great. We sat on the porch and the weather was perfect. There is also a parking lot that I think we were supposed to park in? They have a lot of people working here, probably too many in my opinion. 3 girls mainly hung out on the front porch and greeted and sat people every so often. Maybe I'm missing something. The filet and duck were both cooked PERFECTLY. I think the surf and turf had a curry sauce on it that was good but not great. Would have loved a demi or a cream sauce more but that's just personal opinion. My only thing with this place is after eating everywhere in cape may, yes almost everywhere, this place is a little on the expensive side. I've had similar / better meals with alcohol for less. (No alcohol this night). 1 salad. 1 app. 2 entrees. No drinks of any kind. 1 dessert. $230 after tip. 20+%

John N.

Yelp
Excellent French restaurant. No negatives. We had the escargot, strip steak and filet mignon. Cooked to perfection. Highly recommend. They know what they're doing. Sit outside on a nice evening.

Ellie A.

Yelp
Had a 6:30 reservation that was made weeks in advance. At 7pm table was still not available.... Left and went down the street to Washington Inn.

kavya r.

Yelp
Billed as Cape May's only French restaurant, my partner and I went to try it out for a celebratory dinner. They opened in April this year and are clearly working out some kinks. We ordered oysters, a soup, scallops and the surf and turf. -Raw oysters were NOT served chilled on ice - this was a little odd -They then forgot to bring out the soup -The steak was not cooked to specification - we had requested medium rare, but it was firmly in the medium territory -Scallops were gritty suggesting they weren't cleaned thoroughly but fwiw the sauce they were served in was tasty. Not the sort of experience we expected at the price point. But the beautiful Cape May sunset after made up for the sub-par experience.

Yelp
Our first visit after a few friends recommended this place. Gave it 5 stars. Here's why. Was able to get a weeknight reservation. It's a beautiful venue. We were able to get a table on the porch. The inside tables looked. Nice as well but weather permitting I'd eat outside. Seated within a few minutes. Service was perfect. Dorothy was a true veteran and knew how to take care of her customers. Water and fresh baked French rolls served. It's BYO so we enjoyed a nice bottle of champagne. After a few minutes we placed our order. Small but interesting menu. I had the chicken and goose liver pate which was larger than expected with 6 toasted baguettes mustard jelly and pickles. Very good could eat that every visit. My wive had the French onion soup which was filled with onions and cheese in a sweeter broth. Very tasty and just the right size. For entrees we had the Fluke in a lemon butter sauce with some tasty seasonings including saphron. My wife had the filet au pouive slightly over cooked but peppercorn rubbed and tender and tasty. Both meals were accompanied by fingerling potato's and carrots. We also ordered a tray of spiced French fries and I recommend that. Served with sauces. Very crunchy and tasty. We shared dessert of crème brule. The meals were spaced perfectly. A nicely dressed crowd ( no baseball caps ) not loud Just a nice relaxing evening with delicious food. Cost for the night with a generous tip $200. Will definitely be back. Often.

Yelp
This is such a cute place! My husband and I had date night here and the food was amazing we can't wait to go back. My husband had the Waygu burger and I had the Poisson Du Jour everything was so good and the service was amazing, Sarah Jane was our server and so knowledgeable!

Shistar S.

Yelp
I went here during restaurant week, we sat on the porch and it was a nice environment. Food was alright, I ordered the ratatouille pasta which I had high hopes for but unfortunately my dish was extremely over salted I almost couldn't eat it. My husband ordered the short rib which I will say was delicious. For dessert we shared tiramisu which was also great. The pasta is my only complaint.

Ivan F.

Yelp
I am a local I support local businesses and I came in for restaurant week. Very cute place if I could rate the place on aesthetic I would give 5 stars but sadly the food is bringing it down to three. It was solid 6.5/10 but I probably won't be making my way back. The place is new so it still got some kinks to work out. The lemonade was fire maybe they should just completely change up the menu to be only a lemonade stand.

George R.

Yelp
High end establishment with very good food and service. The mussels were spot on. The mushroom appetizer was delicious as were the baked oysters. Also there's free parking which is always a plus in Cape May!

Nadia M.

Yelp
We (party of 8) had a dinner at Maison Bleue and spent a little extra time at the table, 10 extra minutes! then the manger Dorothy was extremely rude to us and told us that we were not making our dinner on time! was arguing with us and scolding us like little girls! seriously? it is a lovely place, food is mediocre but unpleasant people. we would it come back to this place. not recommending it!

William C.

Yelp
This is the third restaurant in this location, and it's not the charm. If you're going to emulate a French bistro, cold dry oysters on a hubcap won't do. If you can't do it right, don't do it! Steak tartare, mushrooms, and vichyssoise were all good, but the entrees (duck, scallops) seemed to have gotten the same treatment as the oysters. Food was cold. Service was okay. Would not return, would not recommend.

Jane C.

Yelp
Friendly, comfortable setting. Knowledgeable service and great food. From where I see it, now the best food in Cape May

Paul C.

Yelp
First time here, surprisingly good following Black Duck a few days earlier. Best scallops I've ever had. My wife had moules frites, kids had burgers, all very good. Oysters weren't on ice and came with very few bells and whistles, but otherwise very enjoyable. Highly recommend trying.

Doreen M.

Yelp
An amazing dining experience at Maison Bleue tonight, located in a breathtakingly beautiful B&B The Hugh at 653 Washington Street, Cape May. A romantic French Bistro that that offers three intimate dining rooms, each more exquisite than the next. This was our second visit and our food was excellent... once again. On our first visit we decided to try the Prix Fixe ($49.00 5:00-5:30 not available Saturdays). My husband started with a harvest salad with frisée, apples slivers, candied nuts and bleu cheese, he loved it. I had a mushroom fricassee that was a delicious blend of wild mushrooms. We both had the half roasted free range chicken with fingerling potatoes and green beans, the chicken was moist and well seasoned. Our desserts were a Fruit Tart with custard & berries and a Black Forest torte with chocolate and cherries. Our next visit was even better than the first. I had a wild mushroom soup and my husband the same salad as his first visit. He had scallops with fingerling potatoes and green beans. I had New York Strip Steak and a side salad, the steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We repeated the same desserts as our first visit. This restaurant is a real gem, it has it all...a romantic atmosphere & delicious food & great service. It is right up there with our other favorite restaurants, The Ebbitt Room & Primal. If you are looking for a special place for a date or to celebrate, look no further!
