The Best Bars on New Orleans’s Bourbon Street | Eater New Orleans

"Known for live traditional jazz and stiff cocktails, Maison Bourbon is not to be confused with Preservation Hall, a more serious music venue, around the corner on St. Peter. In the rear of the club is a quaint courtyard with a wrought-iron gate accessing the cozy My Bar @ 635, home to the famous purple Voodoo daiquiri and a second-floor balcony over the action." - Beth D’Addono

Such an amazing experience! If you are wanting good jazz in NOLA, come here. The service was phenomenal. So many great drink options (thank you for the surfsides!). The music was absolutely fantastic. Real jazz players playing 5-7 sets. Bring cash for the show. Definitely a must go to spot. Would come here every night

The benais were delicious. The set was wonderful and the waitress was very personable.

When we decided to have our destination wedding in New Orleans, we knew we wanted something on Bourbon to give our guests the true party experience. When we met with Jeanne and the team at Maison Bourbon (Vieux Carre Venues), we were so excited about the possibilities! The venue has a balcony facing the best and most lively intersection of Bourbon St. and is such a gorgeous space. We rented both rooms - one above Maison Bourbon which is adjoined with the one above MyBar@365. We had our wedding catered and our guests are still raving about the selection of food. We highly recommend the brisket and the oysters! There was so much comfortable seating and they allowed us bring in our own beads to toss from the balcony. There were clean restrooms, two full bars, and the ambiance was spectacular! We are so thankful to get to work with Jeanne as our coordinator - she is truly the sweetest and most patient person! We had so many questions along the way and their team never hesitated to get right back to us with details. Don't sleep on this venue! It's affordable and truly worth the experience!

🎼 A really good Jazz band was playing and we had a killer Mint Julip to end our NOLA trip🍸

Google
It's all about that jazz. Some of the best music in New Orleans. Authentic, engaging with the audience, small venue and easy going.

Google
What a NOLA vibe! Unfortunately, it's 21y or above admission only. Kids are not allowed.

Visited in early March. We were wandering down Bourbon Street heading for a different bar but came across this place. What a revelation! It appeared fairly quiet, but had a great jazz band playing, and felt really authentic. The beer was excellent and the barman kept things flowing, including the jokes. Also, had a great Sazerac. We took in the atmosphere and were entranced by the music. Would definitely recommend a visit, and would love to go back again.

Google
Atmosphere was nice , except the band took so many breaks but when they played they were very good. Food was cold and subpar ~ wasn’t that busy as we went early in the evening. Server was kind but extremely slow and we had to look for her several times

Yelp
Loved Maison Bourbon so much, the bartenders knew us by the 3rd night we went. We were looking for something more lowkey in the heart of Bourbon Street and this was the best place! The jazz bands were so lively and overpowered the loud dj's. When you are there, there is a 1 drink minimum per person (which wasn't hard for us to do!). The bartenders were great at getting the crowds their drinks and were pros!

Yelp
Such a fun jazz bar right on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. I was there for a private party on the 2nd floor, where there's another bar, two rooms and doors that lead out to the balcony. It's fun to watch people below you on the street. On the first floor they have the live entertainment and in this night they had a great band that seemed to do Hall & Oates classics and other songs that I knew and love. I wish I could have stayed longer, but I'm glad I know about now for future trips.
google avatar

Mistey W.

Yelp
A nice place to listen to live jazz on Bourbon Street. Its a bar with no frills drinks. Some tables and chairs and plenty of jazz tunes. There are no servers... you go to the bar to order your drinks.
google avatar

William Y.

Yelp
Stopped in to catch some jazz and grab a Yuengling. Cool place. Enjoyable. Fun! Rich in atmosphere and tradition. Great weather in NOLA was a bonus.
google avatar

Reid S.

Yelp
The jazz band played 5 sets through the night and were amazing. The mint juleps were the second star of the show!
google avatar

Missy R.

Yelp
If you come to the French Quarter looking for classic Nola jazz, this is a great place for it. There is a one drink minimum for all patrons but we'll worth it for the quality of entertainment. We've been here a few times always sitting with a smile, a tapping foot and occasional clapping. Awesome music. There is seating scattered throughout and have always been able to get a table. Even when crowded, if you wait a few songs or a set, there seems to be a rotation of people making it possible to grab a seat. It's got a classic old fashioned vibe. You can really see the age of the place and it adds to the overall experience. If you're walking by, go on in and give a listen. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This is a great Jazz club and bar. It's right on Bourbon Street and you can see in through windows along the street. The music music is great and the energy level is high. Drinks are priced as you'd expect but it is a super fun place to go and hear great music and meet new people.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Excellent music every time I go here. Drink prices are a little steep but there is only a one drink minimum and no cover.
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
This is a smaller jazz club that is right on Bourbon Street with big, wide windows. We specifically chose this place because they actually have live music and because it was not too crowded. We liked the energy level of the band and the crowd as well. It made for a very festive atmosphere. The drinks here were nice too and not too expensive.

Yelp
We came to this bar after seeing it as popular jazz bar. The music is nice but the bartender (white, bald, with glasses and a beard) was SO RUDE. He was killing the vibe in the bar acting like an absolute jackass. First of all when we got there, he was literally screaming at another client for them to show their ID and telling them to leave but actually SCREAMING and mind you this bar is small so he was literally louder than the music. Then we sat at the bar and the girl bartender told us we need to order drinks so we did order drinks. 5 mins later We walked to the other side of the bar with our drinks, and this male trouble-maker bartender came and yelled at us "NO OUTSIDE DRINK" continuously screaming!!! Then the female bartender corrected him. Then he started yelling at our other 2 friends that they needed to order drinks. First of all sir, you are killing the vibe in the bar and second of all when you say it like that no one wants to buy anything. On top of that, we of course left the bar eariy after his attitude and due to his lack of courtesy, unfortunately, we weren't able to tip the musicians I would never ever recommend this bar to anyone. Dont waste your time here. There are so many jazz bars in New Orleans with good service.

Yelp
My husband and I came to NOLA to celebrate our anniversary. We stayed on Bourbon St and struggled to find true, good, traditional jazz. We stumbled upon Maison Bourbon by complete accident and LOVED the several hours we spent there! The jazz was AMAZING and our bartender Jamez was awesome!!! (Definitely deserves a raise!) Made me the BEST mojito!! Come for the music, stay for the drinks and have an AWESOME time in Bourbon St!!!!!
google avatar

Marty P.

Yelp
Old historic jazz venue on Bourbon Street. Enjoying a nice local amber lager called "Abita" and listening to some live NOLA jazz. Come check this place out!! Live on Bourbon Street in NOLA!!

Yelp
Great live music. No cover on a Monday and a one drink minimum per person, per set. The hurricane was about $14 but came with a souvenir cup. The drink didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it and was too sweet for my liking.

Aila P.

Yelp
We had a group of 70 in NOLA last weekend for a team-bonding business trip. We are a smallER startup company and it can be hard to find things everyone will enjoy. We rented out the upstairs for a private event with dueling pianos. It was by far the highlight of the whole trip. The girls singing were wonderful, and so were the owners and our bartender. Everyone raved about the night for the rest of the trip and really enjoyed getting to put in requests and dance the night away. Would definitely recommend Maison Bourbon to anyone who asks. The balcony was also AWESOME.

Yelp
tl;dr Somehow there is a corner bar with a chill vibe and lovely live New Orleans jazz right in the blaring noise of terrible Jimmy Buffet covers or rap and the "what the hell did I just step in" of Bourbon Street. Sometimes we found ourselves listening outside from the open door corner with a drink already in our hand or we found ourselves inside sitting at one of the many tables with very attentive service. No cover but there is a one drink minimum per set, which was usually fairly a loose rule, so we had no complaints for value. Patrons tend to be tourists in their early 30s to late 50s of age. The bands would play everything from the classics to the not so common and what also seemed like original songs. One night we even listened to a trumpet player that has a voice/style reminiscent of Louis Armstrong. It's not Preservation Hall but who says it needs to be. The restrooms were "clean" for Bourbon Street standards. I mean, there was still a huge puddle around the toilet in the mens room but the restroom also had a strong smell bleach (so much so that my eyes even watered). I guess that's better than the alternative smells.

Grace G.

Yelp
Walked in Maison Bourbon for a jazz show and it was easily the highlight of my trip. The band played beautifully, classics as well as renditions of songs such as "Blue Skies" by Willie Nelson. Would recommend to anyone looking to catch a peak into New Orleans' jazz scene.

Yelp
Nice jazz bar on Bourbon street. Given that Bourbon street is not the primary hub for live jazz (go to Frenchmen Street), this casual bar has good musicians and worth checking out. The musicians are talented and play a variety of instruments. After scouring for a jazz bar on Bourbon street on our 1st night, I'm glad we stumbled upon this one! I like how there is no drink minimum or cover charge. The drinks are okay and nothing special. I preferred the Pims Cup over the Mint Julep. In addition to the music, the service stood out to me. The waitress was really nice and friendly as she proactively refilled our water multiple times. If you are looking for a more upscale jazz bar, then I recommend going to The Jazz Playhouse at Royal Sonesta a couple of blocks up on Bourbon Street. If you are looking for something more casual, Maison Boubon is spot on. Recommend checking out, good for groups!

Mikayla K.

Yelp
This is a smaller jazz club on Bourbon St and one of the only places you'll find a joint with actual live jazz music, not a DJ or band playing the greatest hits. They do have a one-drink minimum per set and the drinks can be pricy, but the band was so fun to watch and it was a wonderful laid back environment.
google avatar

Ramona G.

Yelp
Awesome jazz bar on Bourbon Street. My sister and I were bar hopping and she wanted to stop by Maison Bourbon because she had been here several years ago when she visited NOLA with her friend. My sister was annoying and wanted to stay long lol I usually like to dip in and dip out. The jazz band that was playing that night was really talented and their lead singer sounded exactly like Louis Armstrong, they were taking donations and since my sister put in money we were able to request them to sing "What A Wonderful World". It was great! They do require one drink per person per set but luckily they weren't that strict on it. The windows and doors to this place are wide open so lucky you, you'll be able to enjoy their music without even coming inside.
google avatar

Yelp
I loved this place. It is a quaint old bar on Bourbon Street where you really hear jazz the way it is supposed to be heard. I don't recall the name of the band that was playing the night we were there, but we were so impressed we bought one of their CDs. Maison Bourbon is a bar. There do have a minimum of one drink per set. Prices are in line with other music clubs in the area. I also have to say something about the service. I'm terrible with getting names, but the server who waited on us was very pleasant. She was helpful in deciding what to order and even gave us some history of the club and the band that was a playing. My usual stop in New Orleans is the Black Cat. This is now on my list, too.
google avatar

Dan P.

Yelp
The wife and spent some time wandering around the French Quarter trying to find live music. For the birthplace of jazz, we found very little jazz. Mostly we found guys doing covers of Jimmy Buffet and classic rock, which we could get anywhere. The band at Maison Bourbon was playing covers, but at least they were covering jazz music. The band members made the covers their own instead of just belting out classic rock. The members of the band were also friendly and had a drink with us at the bar. Drinks are a little pricey for New Orleans, but well within an acceptable range for us. Beers were $6-7 for domestics. We didn't try anything else. If we had more time in NOLA, I would go back here
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
This is a smaller jazz club/bar right in the middle of Bourbon Street. This place is really chill and laid back and the musicians are top flight. The mint juleps are worth a try and I really enjoyed this place.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Awesome live music experience and bar. One of the more memorable stops on our walk down Bourbon St. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
The Maison Bourbon was a blast. It was a little loud but that's just bourbon street. The drinks were made well and the band was incredible. It was a nice reprieve from the rest of bourbon street where we got a chance to sit and just enjoy some jazz.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Our group was asked to leave by one of the bartenders because he didn't believe that my friend was 30 despite having a valid ID. My friend was further told to "grow a beard." The whole interaction felt high-key discriminatory. From reading the other reviews, it looks like this bartender might be a re-occurring issue. The female bartender was pleasant though, and gave us recommendations for other jazz bars in the area.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
I must give 5 stars due to the fabulousness of the music! Wonderful jazz....first female band leader since 1992 ( if I heard correctly...hurricanes are flowing freely) Ambiance is very cozy. Windows/doors open to the street Great service, friendly and fast A true favorite!

Randy K.

Yelp
There are about five bars within two blocks that have live music on Bourbon Street. This one has a very casual atmosphere and pretty good music. However, don't look very closely in the corners or in the restroom.Rat droppings and other excrement.
google avatar

Jacquie G.

Yelp
This place is fabulous. And the music!!! The Leroy Marshall band is amazballs!!!! The can put on a show that will make you dance!
google avatar

Lorena S.

Yelp
The band here was sooo good. Loved the great interaction with the audience. Only thing I didn't like was the fact that they had so many chairs on the floor trying to fit in as many people as they could that it was hard to move around.
google avatar

Seth W.

Yelp
Great little bar...we ended up here after walking up and down Bourbon Street and realized that we didn't want to attend a hard rock show (volume 10000), so we entered Maison Bourbon. One drink required during each set of the band. The band was a cool jazz group playing at a volume that was perfect...could still quietly talk with other people but loud enough to drown out the crown/street noise. We easily got 2 seats at the bar, staff was very polite...cocktails were strong..no complaints!
google avatar

Jake L.

Yelp
Apparently this place is the last remaining jazz bar on Bourbon St. If so, I hope it remains for a while. I went on a Sunday night, and the jazz band was amazing, probably due to the talent of all their members (trumpeter/vocalist, saxophonist, double-bass player, pianist, and drummer). It's amazing that a place like this doesn't have a cover fee. Instead, they work on "tips" after each set, and you're supposed to order a new drink during each set to support the bar staff. As for the drinks, the cocktails are on the expensive side, which is not surprising since you're also paying for the experience. The Pimm's cup was great. The mint julep was just OK. Overall, it's a great fun experience, a true oasis of class in a sea of Bourbon debauchery.
google avatar

Melody L.

Yelp
Our favorite bar on Bourbon Street! The band was great and their inter-action with the audience was really fun! This place is the best!!!
google avatar

Lin F.

Yelp
Jazzy soulful voice crooning Frank. Clarinet reminiscent of Billy Holliday blues. Strong drink: Swamp lilly (mojito). Started here on Tuesday night Bourbon St. Crawl. Glad I did because I was coherent enough to actually appreciate the GOOD Jazz band. No cover; 1 drink per set minimum. Went back Thursday & Friday while it was still light outside. Fast Friendly service from Waitress wearing Who Dat? Saints tops. Merlot--good! Blue Moon fruited with orange slices--Good again! Can't go wrong here. Ladies room outside, I can't tell you how I appreciate the sign reminder of the STEP. I've never been to so many NOLA places where random steps appear as harbingers for a twisted ankle. Sooo, thank you Maison Bourbon for the warning!!!!
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
One of the more casual spots on Bourbon Street. It opens right onto the street, and they have actual tables and much more seating than the places around it. It's more of a sit and chill bar. Good place to rest. The crowd is slightly older than the rest of the places we checked out on Bourbon Street. The bartenders were so nice. We came in towards the end of a set and moved from a bar to a table. The 5 minutes of the live jazz we heard was pretty good. Can't really speak for the performers, but chill bar vibes.
google avatar

Jose D.

Yelp
For sure this is the best jazz club that we enjoyed during our stay in New Orleans. Traveling as two twenty-something's, some of the other jazz clubs felt stuffy and catered to an older crowd. Don't get me wrong, there was a good blend of ages here, but the atmosphere is pretty casual. Compared to Fritzel's which is nearby, the seating is better and the setup is more spacious. The sets seem to last about 45 minutes followed by a 15 minute break. The posted sign says there is a one drink minimum per set, but on the nights we went, as long as you ordered one drink, they didn't seem to pushy about ordering a second one. Bands were good both nights. When we booked our trip to New Orleans, I imagined a great number of jazz clubs like this one--turns out that Maison Bourbon is the only one that actually met my expectations.
google avatar

Yelp
Must do stop....it's what NOLA is all about!!!!! Great music and drinks, sit back and relax, enjoy..
google avatar

Dee Dee C.

Yelp
I love when you ask a bartender to give you a drink based on various qualities, and then you receive the perfect drink. I asked the bartender to give me a drink that was sweet, strong, and made without caffeine and he gave me the most delicious Malibu Rum drink. At least I think that is what he called it. I don't know for sure, but I do know that it was strong and tasted good and was only $8. He was even nice enough to upgrade me to a bigger portion after I mentioned that my friend's drink was bigger than mine. I think the in-house band played on the Thursday and Saturday night I was by. Both times the band was jamming. They played the type of jazz that I expect form New Orleans: loud, brassy, funky, and fun. This is definitely one of the few gems on Bourbon Street.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
This is the place to come if you want to hear incredible music! Amazing service, and strong drinks. I can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Elaine S.

Yelp
We visited on Sunday night when the Saints were playing the Dallas Cowboys so all eyes including the jazz musicians' were on the progress of the game on the TV! It was a great experience - we sat at the bar and were served by a very friendly bartender and drank potent Hurricanes whilst listening to some great jazz. The atmosphere was terrific.
google avatar

Daisy K.

Yelp
We were originally recommended this bar by close friends who wanted us to see Jamil Sharif. Unfortunately, we learned he was retired and wouldn't be able to see this great man perform. However, we ended up stumbling upon the bar anyway and still had a great time. Unlike the rest of Bourbon street, it seemed to be filled with more serious music lovers who were really into the live music. The entire bar is focused on the band and it was a great vibe! I would say a bit pricier than other spots on Bourbon, but also more potent. I felt like we had a great time here and would highly recommend it!
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
Customer service is good. They allowed me to charge my dying phone. The mojito drink is nice. The strawberry daiquiri was just ok. Whatever you order, you pay immediately. It was very cold where we sat, which was against the wall near the stage. The live band was great. Talented musicians!! They stopped at 12:15 am. The women's restroom was interesting to say the least. Not your typical stalls. Swinging western-type doors.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
In here as a write. Jeff Price and the Catahoula Music Co bringing the house down. Staff super friendly. Drinks pricey but hey, no cover in a very high rent area. Seriously this places is dedicated to the preservation of jazz!
google avatar

Pavlina K.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Visited on a Monday night. Unlike other bars it wasn't crowded, drink prices reasonable, super fast service and music entertainment was just great!

Yelp
I've always been weary of Bourbon Street, but Maison Bourbon is located downnn the block, away from all the craziness... which, if you think about it, makes sense. Just like when you go to those marketplaces and the most expensive "junk" is towards the front/entrance, but then as you walk in deeper, you find the hidden gems & trinkets. That's kind of like Maison Bourbon. Although drinks are standard - he got a few Jamesons, neat, and I got a few Hendricks drinks with Sprite. The band and atmosphere is what you come to Maison Bourbon for. The bartender who took our first drink orders ended up being part of the band. We got there JUST in time before they started playing (I think like 2a on a Friday night, so technically Saturday). We were lucky to have snagged two bar stools where we stayed, drank, watched, listened, and just enjoyed ourselves. I even got asked to dance by another guest who, just like me, was itching to dance a little salsa when the band played one latin-esque tune. Friendly, clean, older crowd. No drunken 20-somethings stumbling around or throwing up, but maybe a few 40- and 50-somethings a little tipsy. ;) There was a woman with a tiara who was celebrating her 50th birthday. She was my favorite. :)

Yelp
Our favourite place on B.St by far. While most places have gone to the dark side and blast recorded blah pop music this jazz joint is still playing traditional foot stomping clap along feeling happy jazz classics with pizzazz!! We visited daily, sometimes twice daily as we were walking around the FQ and Frenchman St and they were the best we saw. We even enjoyed it more than Preservation Hall!! Drinks were not too expensive, they serve coffee, Hurricanes are strong and go down well in the heat. Waitress service with a smile. We loved the music so much we bought quite a few CDs. Make sure you tip the players well, they deserve it.
google avatar

Marcia J.

Yelp
Small and cozy atmosphere! Nice energy and quality jazz performers!!!! The atmosphere was full of energy and the band was quite entertaining !!!!
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed this place. It's a touristy spot on bourbon but it's great because they always have a jazz band. The bartenders are attentive and friendly. The drinks are a bit pricey but it's very open so it's a great place to sit, people watch, listen to music, and have a good time. Also I love how the place is decorated for Halloween! So festive and the bartenders seem into all the hoopla too.
google avatar

Lydia W.

Yelp
They have live jazz music for anyone who is interested. I enjoyed a nice bottle of IPA beer at this saloon. It was welcoming and definitely was a great time sitting and listening to live jazz. It is on bourbon street so there is always a heavy crowd. Usually this place attracts a lot of the older crowd rather than the young crowd, but if you love jazz music it is great to experience. You are free to dance and tip the band as you please. They have a menu that offers minimum good items like appetizers and other finger foods to pick at while you enjoy the music. Service is always fast and efficient the two times I went and I have no complaints about anything. They have to go cups sitting by each door in case you decide to walk and enjoy bourbon street. I highly recommend Masions if you love jazz music and want to relax a bit from the big crowd.
google avatar

Eddie L.

Yelp
This is a truly great traditional jazz venue on Bourbon Street. No cover. Reasonable priced drinks ($7 glass of wine). The night we were there, the band, the Catahoula Music company, was great. The audience was glued.
