Hong Kong travel bubble: The best places to eat - SilverKris

"The chef-driven, garden-themed restaurant opened by Esther Sham offers a relaxed Asian–French approach in a sunlit Wan Chai venue filled with hand-picked vintage antiques. The inventive menu gives classic European dishes an Asian twist, with examples such as Matsuba crab meat wrapped in rice paper rolls topped with sea urchin and sautéed spanner crab linguine; diners can opt for multi-course tasting menus for a complete experience." - SilverKris

A Taste of Maison ES: Hong Kong Classics Meet French Flair I recently visited Maison ES to try their brand-new menu, launched just a week ago. This menu is all about reimagining Hong Kong classics with a French creative twist. The interior is exquisitely elegant—every detail feels refined, and the ambiance is supremely comfortable. The Bread to Begin The meal started with their home-baked scallion oil bread, served piping hot. What made it stand out were the two house-made butters: - XO Sauce & Satay Butter: Salty, savory, and beautifully complex. - Smoked Eel Butter: Luxurious and pâté-like in texture, offering a surprisingly rich and memorable taste. Starters Alaskan King Crab Steamed – Uni Cauliflower Cream & Shaoxing Chicken Oil Sauce Sweet, succulent king crab paired with umami-rich uni, velvety cauliflower cream, a drizzle of Shaoxing-infused chicken oil, and all lifted by the gentle aroma of Chinese wine. Every bite was full of flavor depth and balance. Heirloom Cherry-Tomatoes – Preserved Plum, Japanese Yam Purée, Ice Plant The heirloom tomatoes were marinated in preserved plum water, striking a perfect sweet-tart balance. The Japanese yam purée in the center was smooth and fresh, while crisp and slightly salty ice plant added the perfect finishing touch. Mains: Street Food Memories, Elevated Cuttlefish "Noodles" · Sautéed Lobster · Puffed Bean Curd · HK-Style Curry Sauce This playful dish pays homage to local “curry squid and fish balls.” Thinly sliced cuttlefish mimics rice noodles, tossed with sautéed lobster and crispy puffed tofu. The rich Hong Kong-style curry sauce was both bold and nostalgic, blending technical finesse with whimsical charm. Celeriac – Brown Butter Roasted Roulade, Quinoa, Black Truffle, Black Pepper Sauce, Onion Broth - The slow-roasted celeriac, infused with black truffle, delivered layers of earthy aroma. Paired with mushroom quinoa for texture, the real highlight was the black pepper sauce, bolstered by a house-made caramelized onion broth. It instantly evoked memories of classic Hong Kong steakhouse flavors. Sweet Finale: A New Take on Cantonese Dessert “Black & White” Sesame Salted Egg Tart with Japanese Tofu Ice Cream Think of it as a black sesame sweet soup and sweet tofu pudding. The base is a black sesame tart crust, filled with salted egg yolk and chewy glutinous rice balls, then topped with a glossy black sesame chocolate sauce. The side of Japanese tofu ice cream was incredibly smooth, pairing beautifully to round out the meal. Maison ES has truly poured creativity and detail into this new menu. Next time, I’ll definitely be trying their signature dishes—the “Tartare,” “Wagyu Wellington,” and innovative “Maggi Taro.” Maison ES Shop B, UG/F, Hang Tak Building, 1 Electric Street, Wan Chai @maison_es @cheftata @peony1006 #MaisonES #HongKongFood #WanchaiFoodprint #CantoneseFlavour #FrenchCuisine #FineDiningHK #VintageVibes #NewNostalgia #FrenchDining #HongKongTwist

Charming restaurant with a warm ambiance and an outstanding menu of strongly-flavored French staples and fusion dishes with a touch of Chinese ingredients or flavorings. The set menu is very good value.

I had the 3 course lunch set by myself. Food was average, portion sizes small, and service was appalling. For starters, I had the Soup of the Day which was lobster bisque. It tasted decent but the consistency was a bit too watery for a bisque. Could use a bit more lobster pieces too. For the mains, I had pigeon which was tender and juicy, complimented with the sauce and grains. However, the portion size was TINY! For dessert, I had the cheese platter. However, it was not professionally curated as they used random cheese you could find from the supermarket, with no variation in sharpness of the flavours. However, the service was very slow. It took 20mins for the server to take my order, even though I was dining alone. Even the bread basket took 20 more minutes. Food took ages to arrive too, as all servers were busy tending to the table next to me with who seemed like regulars, who ordered more expensive items. Servers should treat all customers equally and this blatant favouritism was quite disheartening.

The most surprising dish would be the cuttlefish noodles with shrimp paste and lobster. The texture was amazing and the flavours blend in beautifully. Highly recommend!

Beautifully decorated restaurant in a quiet corner of a busy dining district. Chose their 3-course lunch menu. Delicious food (the spring chicken is super tender) and their service is excellent. Modern French dining.

I recently went to this French fine dining restaurant with my friend. The interior decor has a very luxurious and elegant feel to it. It's actually the filming location for a popular TV drama series featuring a news anchor. Not only is the food excellent, but the service is also very attentive and thoughtful. It's definitely a great place to celebrate with a significant other or friends. I highly recommend it!

The food is delicious, waiters are very nice and attentive. My friend and mine were really enjoyed. There is a nice place to celebrate any events or want to enjoy a chill night. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Maison ES is tucked away in a small street in Wan Chai. It has a really nice neighborhood restaurant feel and the interior is beautifully designed. However, I really didn't think the food matches the decor and price point. Food: 3.5 stars Ambience/service: 5 stars Value: 2.5 stars On my visit I had three courses: poke tuna appetizer, the longastine ravioli, and the chestnut dessert. 1The tuna appetizer was ok. It is a passable dish but I really didn't think it was anything special and nothing really distinguishing from eating something similar at a pole shop. 2The langoustine ravioli dish was the best of the night. The laksa broth it was served in had a nice richness and wasn't too heavy. The noodles it was served with was also nice. I'm also a sucker for a poached egg so this is a dish I would like. The portion was a bit small for a main but the flavors were good. 3The chestnut dessert I really didn't like very much. There was too much chestnut purée and the brownie bites it was served with wasn't that great. This dish could have really used some ice cream.

Yelp
What makes this place stand out is the unique restaurant ambiance and the friendly staff. I came here for dinner with my husband and his friend on a Friday evening. It was relatively packed, but not loud (reservations definitely recommended). The restaurant entrance is a little hidden, on a hill just off of Star Street close to PP3. The entire place has a girly, garden theme, with warm lighting. The seats are very comfortable with the tables not too close to each other. This is a fusion French restaurant. They have a la carte menu items and also recommended 4-dish or 6-dish sets. I wasn't particularly hungry, so I ordered an appetizer and an entree. For the appetizer I got the tuna poke, which was fresh and well marinated, served in a martini glass. The wasabi ice cream on top was unique and had a soft fluffy creamy texture. For the entree I ordered the miso cod, which was well flavored and very tender. The one waitress who served us was especially friendly, giving personal recommendations of her favorite items and consistently checking up on us to ask how the dishes tasted. We did not feel pressured to rush through our dinner and leave as soon as we finished. Would come back for afternoon tea or a a coffee date next time I need a quiet, comfortable, secret hideaway place.

Yelp
Time of visit: September 2015 After reading that Maison Es is one of the new must-try restaurants in Hong Kong, I put it at the top of my list (mainly because of the girly interior decor). Needless to say, the whole experience was very, very disappointing as you might have already read about on my Instagram. Suffice it to say, everything was overpriced and the food quality definitely did not justify the pricey menu. I ordered the following: Blueberry Pancakes with Orange & Lemon Curd Five sad-looking mini-pancakes that were too dry and floury. For $180, I'd rather go back to Tabibito and order their super-fluffy pancake with caramelized bananas. Mushroom & Eggs Crêpe Don't remember the exact name for this dish but all I can say was it was another overpriced dish. Croque Madame If you're not ready to pay $200 for a disappointing Croque Madame, don't come here. Crab Cake Soufflé Let's just say, I prefer sticking with soufflés for dessert. Valrhona Hot Chocolate They can't possibly mess up Valrhona chocolate though right? All in all, the food was overpriced, the staff didn't know what was going on and the food was mediocre (and that's a generous statement). The interior decor and the flowers by the entrance are a nice touch. Our server told us the chefs recommend that we order something sweet first before the savory. We asked him why that was the case and his response was, "I'm not too sure. It's just what the head chef said." From this conversation, here's another lesson I learned from this experience. While most restaurants treat the servers as part-time workers who only need to take down people's orders and help the customers refill their water glasses, these are the people who are customer-facing and are essentially, the face of your brand. If they don't understand the restaurant, the brand and the concept well, they won't be able to help you persuade the customers to order an extra dish or try an additional dessert after their meal. I'll admit, I was quite harsh when I said I don't think Maison Es will survive for too long if they don't make any improvements but since the F&B industry in Hong Kong is so competitive and the customers are more and more demanding as the middle-class continues to grow, F&B establishments need to continue to improve.

Yelp
I have been to Maison ES 4 times and this hidden gem on Star Street still surprised my every visit with their exceptional service and menu of carefully designed and crafted (french fusion) delicacies by their head chef. I first visited the place for a bridal party and I was very impressed with how professional and helpful their team was with the planning and execution. The staff there are all very attentive and are really good at making food recommendations catered to your appetite and mood. I have been extremely spoiled with the varieties of good food that they served me in my past visits and I am going to be back more often definitely! Try the: -Pacific Big Eye Tuna Wasabi Cocktail -USDA Prime Short Rib P.s. if you love oysters, you ought to try Maison ES's for dinner or at their lunch buffet. Really impressed with the freshness and cleanliness of the oysters that they serve.

Yelp
Must admit Maison Es is not easy to find, and since I have been to this place I have been selfishly hoping that this place wont get too much publicity, which makes me writing this review somewhat ironic (though I don't tend to attract much publicity lol), but I did feel I need to do this place justice in writing this after browsing some prior reviews. Tucked away in a quaint corner behind Star Street, this hidden gem is a perfect getaway from the huzzle and buzzle of the rest of Wanchai. I frequent this restaurant from time to time for business lunches, dinners on special occassions and I am currently mandated to organise a firm function there shortly. Maison Es serves exquisive and creative French fusion which is impressively and consistently executed to perfection. The food there is perfectly balanced, throughtful and flavourful - the Oysters are fresh (one of the best in town), Hakkaido scallop with uni and nori is dreamy, love the char and smokeness of their slow cooked octopus, short rib and duck served were moist and tender, the desserts there are devine (try them all!). You will soon find shortly after arrival that it is one of those rare restauarants that goes the extra mile to ensure customer get the most out of their experience - other than attentive and friendly staff who clearly knows their stuff, you can tell from the temperature of fresh bread served, or the crunchiness of the batter of its cauliflower tempura, that the chef is one which respects his ingredients. The place is cozy and does not feel pretentious (which is difficult given it IS French vintage), and when we had a loud bunch of friends there they had curtains drawn to ensure our privacy (as well as the enjoyment of others). All in all, a fantastic place which I will recommend anyone planning to try it out. For those who use Eatigo, do use it for bonus discount!
