The 33 Best Rio de Janeiro Restaurants | Eater

"From the outside, this 50-year-old Flamengo institution looks like a speakeasy, but inside you’ll find some of the city’s best cuts of beef grilled over an open flame. This is the heart of churrasco culture, which for many Brazilians is restricted to prime cuts of meat and coarse salt. Nowadays, Majórica is run by the daughter of one of the original Spanish owners and a Galician-born janitor who worked his way up the ladder. Don’t miss the picanha — plump disks of sirloin cap — served fresh off the grill." - Rafael Tonon

Majorca Steakhouse in Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro, is a gem for steak lovers. The cozy and inviting ambiance makes it perfect for a special night out or a romantic dinner. The ribeye and filet mignon we tried were cooked to perfection, bursting with rich, savory flavor. The side dishes, like the garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed broccolini, were delicious and complemented the steaks perfectly. The presentation was spot-on, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs. The service was attentive and friendly, enhancing our dining experience. The extensive wine list offered the perfect pairing for our meal. Whether you're a steak enthusiast or just looking for an exceptional dining experience, Majorca Steakhouse is the place to go. Highly recommend for anyone in the area!

Tri-cut was delicious, but very fatty (only the center was edible). Sides were fresh, cream spinach was the stand out.

We were disappointed with the honesty of the staff during our visit. We were told that the only fish available was a large one, which we ended up ordering—only to later see several smaller fish fillets being served elsewhere. It felt like a tactic to upsell us. Additionally, the focus on getting tips via Pix came off as a bit pushy, giving the impression that the priority was making money rather than offering a genuine experience. That said, the food and drinks were excellent. It’s a shame that the lack of transparency overshadowed what could have been a great experience. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.

One of the best places for meat in Rio de Janeiro. Very local, great quality and menu offering. Friendly and fast service.

Fancy restaurant with their version of fancy waiters and fancy service. The food was of very high quality: the steak cooked to our liking and the salad really fresh. The price was steep, but it was a really nice alternative to a "rodizio" style restaurant. We didn't have any wine, but saw that they have a nicely sized wine cellar.

Google
Old school asado spot, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. I highly recommend checking this place out.

I'll be honest, the food was just... ok. Steak was nothing special. Spinach was good. You'll love it if you haven't travelled much. Service was lackluster. Atmosphere was good. Oh well.

Yelp
It's from another era. Old school. The waiters are seasoned and wear uniforms from years forgotten. The dishes are straightforward and unpretentious, dare I say meat and potatoes (pun intended). Visiting from Miami we felt the trip to Brazil would not be complete without a trip to a steakhouse. Some of the options we actually have back home, so we settled on this one. The steaks are of great quality, cooked perfectly to your specifications and delivered by friendly knowledgeable staff. The sausage sent out before the meal was perhaps my favorite thing, rivaled only by the fried potatoes. The fried potatoes are masterful. It's like they thinly sliced two pieces of potato, stuck them together, and then fried them. So you have two crunchy sides with an air pocket between them. Where have these been all my life??? Don't leave without ordering them. The picanha was as good as we expected. The chorizo is actually a cut of steak here, if he had known Portuguese a bit better we wouldn't have ordered it because we thought it was sausage, but here it's a cut of meat. Delicious anyway. The side of broccoli rice made us feel a bit healthier. Lol.

Yelp
This restaurant came highly recommended as one of the best "barbecue" places in Rio. It's really more of a steakhouse than a barbecue place, but I wouldn't advise coming here unless you are ready to eat a Fred Flintstone-sized cut of meat. You have the option of going to the counter and picking the cut of meat you want or ordering off the menu and letting them pick for you. I highly recommend ordering from the counter, so you can see what you're in for. I ordered the t-bone steak, and it's the biggest steak I've ever seen in my life that wasn't for two people. I don't even know how I finished a steak that massive. The only thing I'd recommend is that for anyone (like me) who doesn't like anything less than medium, to know what the Portuguese word is for "well done". Medium well got me a medium rare steak. After drinks and sides, our bill came to about R$ 135, which was like $35. Look at the picture of my t-bone (or a picture of my friend's steak which was half of a steak he split with another friend) and tell me where else you can get a brontosaurus steak like that at that price?

Yelp
Came to this place during our first night of a 15 day trip through Rio and Argentina. We were amazed at the quality of the food here and even after 15 days of hunting down steakhouses, this place still rose to the top. My boyfriend ordered the filet mignon, medium rare, while I ordered the salmon. We also got a side of greens for a change in flavor. Both dishes were spectacular, but the steak definitely stole the show. The steak was enormous, and could easily serve 2 or 3 people. Much larger than any cut in the US. But more importantly, the quality and cook temperature were perfect. The medium rare was just how we like it. As for the salmon, it was also a very generous portion and cooked very well-- nice crisp outside with great seasoning. Would highly recommend for a nice meal in Rio. Prices are not cheap, but the quality is spectacular.

Yelp
The real deal for meat lovers! We visited the great Majorica teice during our stay in Rio. That says a lot already. The picanha was delicious so was also the t-bone steak! Before we had ordered we were served a very tasty sausage and salad as a starter. How many restaurants offers that? The service was just perfect and the place had a relaxed atmosphere for being a "high class" restaurant. I'm drooling when I think of Majorica!

Yelp
Best a la carte churrascaria (Brazilian BBQ) place in Rio. The quality is great and the service is old style where they serve you directly into your plate. The BBQ is with charcoal and it has a lot of flavor.

Yelp
It's true that the portion sizes here are large, but with some strategy, you can easily walk out of here full but not uncomfortable. The four of us came ready for meat sweats after wandering around Rio all day, and decided to play it safe with ordering two types of meats and a number of sides. With an English menu available, we decided to go with the Picanha and Filet Mignon with black peppercorn sauce for the meats. For our sides, we went with french fries, farofa, and broccoli. Something to note is that the vegetables and sides are unsalted. When you eat the sids in conjunction with the meats (they use a ton of salt on the grilled meats), it's perfect. Separately? Not so good. We hadn't had farofa yet, so trying this at Majorica was fun. Farofa is a staple item that Brazilians use when eating grilled meats, and this version of farofa was mixed with egg (there's an option to mix in plantain too). All in all, everything liked the filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, but I personally found the Picanha to be the best. English is spoken, although don't plan on asking a ton of questions since their English is limited to what's on the menu. The open grill area makes for some fun photos, especially since you can see everything that's being done!

Yelp
We were 3 persons sharing a piece of meet that they recomended. It was pink and perfectly cooked. We also ordered 2 sides, mashed potatoe (more salt needed) and greek rice. It was very tasty and more than enough food for us. With water and beer, we paid about 95 real/p.

Yelp
Apparently a lot of people think this place is a rodizio, but it's not--you order off the menu, or you can actually go to a display case like at a butcher shop and you can actually choose whatever piece/cut of meat you want. Note that most of the dishes are very large, so you can probably share most of them between two people. Both, the service and the food were very good.

Yelp
I don't understand how this restaurant is rated so highly. Either these guys were having a really off night or there are a lot of fake reviews. I came here with 3 friends and this was easily the worst meal of the trip and according to my friend Adam the worst meal of his life(a little dramatic I know). But there is no way this place can be anywhere near 4.5 stars. Right when we walked in we noticed that almost every person in the restaurant was a tourist so it seems like most locales know to stay away. Service: Starting from the service, it was actually pretty good. Waiters were kind and accommodating and put up with our lack of Portuguese. Had full menus in English as well. Food: Consistently bad. Here is what we ordered: Hearts of Palm Salad - This was literally just hearts of palm from a can, put on a plate with nothing else. It tasted ok, but at least make some effort and add some other stuff to it. If I wanted canned of hearts of palm I would have just gone and bought some at Zona Sul. Prime Rib - This steak was soo bland. Not sure how that is possible as a Prime Rib is one of the fattiest and thus tastiest cuts of meat on a cow. Usually just by the amount of fat on this steak makes it taste great, but somehow they screwed this up. Almost no flavor at all. What a waste. Filet Mignon - Understandably this steak has less fat and thus less flavor than most steaks, but again this steak was exceptionally bland. I don't think I have ever asked for steak sauce in a restaurant, but I had to. And for whatever reason when they brought out our "steak sauce" it was a bottle of soy sauce. Cod - One of the most offensive things I have ever had served to me. Cod is usually a very clean smelling, flakey fish. This fish reeked, was incredibly dry and tasted extremely fishy. It tasted like it came straight out of the Lagoa....20 days ago. I can't believe they had the audacity to serve it. We each took about 1 bite and couldn't go on. We tried to send it back, but maybe due to the translation issue, lack of caring from the manager or management shamelessly trying to rip people off they refused. Maybe this was our fault for ordering cod at a steakhouse, but the waiter did say it was very, very good. Complete B.S. Sides - These were fine. Got broccoli with garlic, French fries and some sort of boiled/baked potato. Wine - We did have 2 bottles of great Argentinian wine. It's funny that the only good thing about the meal was the only thing that the restaurant didn't touch. If you are visiting Rio and are in the mood for steak, I implore you to go somewhere else.

Yelp
Best place to eat meat and barbecue in Rio! Love it! It's a very old place, and it has the vibe of tha restaurants from the mountains of the southeast of the country.
