Where to try poke, a Hawaiian fish favorite, in Las Vegas | Eater Vegas

"Since its opening in January 2016, the Lawther brothers have brought traditional Hawaiian food to Las Vegas. One of Makai’s most popular menu selections is the ahi tuna poke. Served seared or raw, this item can be ordered a la carte per pound or as a full plate option with rice and side choices such as garlic edamame or sweet corn." - Krista Diamond

Google
We ordered takeout via UberEats from this restaurant, and the experience was just okay. The food was average and didn’t leave a lasting impression. The restaurant could improve by offering more drink flavor options to the UberEats app; currently, Hawaiian Sun is the only choice, so you wind up getting whatever flavor they give you. Additionally, they frequently mess up orders. For instance, we requested extra katsu sauce for the chicken katsu plate but received none, not even on the side. We also ordered extra side dishes, but the portions were disappointing considering the $5.99 price tag, except for the kimchee slaw and macaroni salad, which were priced accordingly to their portion size. The small serving of steak for $5.99 was particularly underwhelming. And also we didn’t get our soy sauce or sriracha packets at all. Overall, my wife and I will be exploring other Hawaiian restaurants before returning here.

Google
I ordered three medium plates . I haven't ordered for sometime and the food used to be good. What I got tonight was disgusting. There was a massive amount of lard / fat in the bottom of trays. The edamame where full of fat. Simply disgusting and a waste of money.

Google
This was my first time and the last time I will go. First of all, the kaloha pig was not authentic. It taste like southern chopped pork. The katsu chicken was alright but did not taste authentic. The tuna had no taste. Nothing like in Hawaii. The service was good. Not worth the money spent, not authentic. Nothing taste like Hawaii. This will be the first and last time eating their food.

Bethany tucker

Google
Ordered take out… As you can see their “salad” is just chopped lettuce which came without dressing and the sweet corn was straight out of a can. Edamame was cold, steak and chicken both had alot of fat/grizzle. . . would not recommend or order again. Miss this place.

Google
I was looking for something different to eat for lunch. Using Google maps to find food places near me and this place caught my eye. After reading some reviews, I decided to try it out. I got two choices of meat, two sides and white rice. The chicken katsu was cold and dry. It was a little crispy but overall it’s not fresh. The shredded pork is good but also cold. The chicken wings was very dry and cold. I guess it’s your basic Hawaiian fast food restaurant. No hot dish everything was cold. Unlike L&L that still serves your hot and fresh dishes. The macaroni salad is a little salty for my taste and it has big chunks of potato in it. I don’t know why? Overall, I am not impressed after paying $23.00 for a cold meal. Staff was friendly and mask is not required.

Google
This place was a little gem that we didn't mean to go to. Wanted to hit the asian noodle place a few doors down but line was out the door. Found this place instead and enjoyed a great lunch of fresh Hawaiian bbq. Service was done right and menu was easy to figure out. The food was fresh and tasty - and there is a nice outdoor dining space to boot.

Google
What happened with the Katsu Chicken? The last couple of visits only small pieces which consist of dry dark and very little meat just crust?? We used to eat here a lot and tell everyone when they first opened on FT Apache. Too bad used to be really good but feel like I’m throwing money away now… please bring back the quality!

Google
I had a trio of chicken katsu, Kahlua pork, and spicy poke with rice and macaroni salad. This is Hawaiian BBQ is on point and I highly recommend it if you on Las Vegas's West and looking for a quick delicious bite to eat.

Yelp
Do not come to this location!! Go to the other locations, way more food per portion and not incompetent workers

Yelp
In the last month, I have been here four times. The reason: it is so good! It also doesn't hurt that the prices are incredibly reasonable. Their chicken Katsu is very good, yet my favorite is their chicken teriyaki. All of their main dishes are delicious, and one of my friends even tried their pokey and said it was awesome. I like the fact that you go up to the counter and you get to order a small, medium, or large bowl. The small bowl gets one main protein, a scoop of rice, which could be white or brown, and a side, which can be everything for macaroni salad to just garden salad with dressing to sweet corn, etc. The medium bowl gives you double the order of the small bowl and the large bowl gives you triple the order of the small bowl. For what you get, the prices are phenomenal. I also like that, when I ordered the medium bowl, I didn't want two scoops of rice, and they allow you to change any scoop of rice for another side, for just an extra $.30, which is very fair. The dressings for their salads are delicious, and I always order their Asian dressing to go with that. Their teriyaki sauce is so good. The service is always fast and friendly, and they are clean and run the restaurant very well. I also like the fact that they have plenty of tables with comfortable chairs, so it's easy to eat at the restaurant and find seats. It's a very friendly environment And I like the relaxed vibe. This is such an easy five stars and I highly recommend it to anyone. Just so good!

Yelp
This is a great spot for a quick and satisfying meal. My boyfriend and I came for a late lunch. We both got the teriyaki chicken and steak combo on a medium plate, and it's the perfect portion fills you up just enough with a little left to take home. The meat can be a little dry on its own, but it's still super flavorful--definitely better with a little extra teriyaki sauce. The real winner though, is the mac salad. I'm obsessed! Its so creamy and flavorful, it helps balance everything out. Honestly, I wish I got a double scoop. I also had the tossed salad with vinaigrette, and that tangy crunch with the warm rice and meat was such a good combo. Service is fast, portions are generous, and we always leave full!

Yelp
Well, before i moved from this side of town, I decided to get some takeout from this place. The kalua pork was really juicy and full of flavor, which I loved. However, I found the teriyaki chicken to be a bit dry and lacking in taste. The mochiko chicken, which were marinated wings, also fell a bit short for me. The skin needs some crispiness. In my opinion, the portions were on the smaller side. It might be okay for a quick bite, but I was left wanting more.

Yelp
Great customer service!... The employees were informative and all of the food that was on display, upon ordering looked fresh. Upon eating all of my food everything lived up to my expectations. From the Katsu to the rice as well as the macaroni salad. This is a great location with good food and friendly customer service.

Yelp
I tried this place last night after hearing it's an underrated restaurant and after eating it I couldn't agree more. We got the medium size which I'm a big guy and that was the perfect amount of food for me. The chicken katsu (not sure I spelt that right but you get it) and chicken teriyaki which were both super good but the best bite by a mile was the spicy poke. It's $2 more but worth it. The brown rice is awesome and we double downed on the mac salad. I highly recommend this place and I'll be coming back a lot. The sauces are bomb too.
google avatar

Margret C.

Yelp
We got a medium and a large for $28.15. It was delicious. We got a few pieces of katsu from the medium but split the large one last wednesday night. We saved the medium for saturday's lunch. (And it was easy to warm up too.) We got the chicken katsu, teriyaki chicken & kalua pork with double mac salad and rice, mmm. Everything was really tasty. The mac salad had a lot of flavor. The kalua pork was not as fatty as you'd think, which was surprising. The katsu was perfect. And the teri chicken was very good. The sauces were also delish. I am a big fan of buying once, but eating twice. I think this might be our hawaiian food go-to. And the big plus, is it's close to home too. Our son loves it. When given the choice he wants this type of food (we don't get it as often as we used to, with rising prices, we keep it to once a weekend, the eating out).

Laurel F.

Yelp
The food was good but not very authentic. The teriyaki chicken didn't taste like teriyaki so they should marinate it in teriyaki sauce before they cook it. The hapa rice was ok but it had a few hard grains from sitting out. The food is all precooked and being heated and it could be fresher but it was a good temp. I'll look for a better Hawaiian place. This place is a decent option and there are a lot of good choices.

Jenn G.

Yelp
I tried the one on Blue Diamond first time, medium bowl 2 meats 2 sides not impressed with onions in Mac salad and then they gave me a side salad NO dressing -really just lettuce, why ?teriyaki chicken needed more teriyaki sauce Not happy as I took my order to work

Yelp
This seems like a small place but food is better than I expected. I was wondering if there was something to this place but nope. Just an island inspired restaurant that serves great fresh food. I had their chicken wings and katsu with macaroni salad and kimchi slaw. Definitely one of the best island food I've had thus far since moving to Vegas. I have much more to explore but this place is a go to for me currently. The inside it very mellow and staff is great. Friend and attentive to what you need. They don't carry hot sauce so just be aware of that. Everything was great. I'm coming back for lunch today lol
google avatar

Yelp
I am not happy about how they weight the food , the employee with green hair color she scoop and pack a lot of rice but only gave me 4 slices of katsu chicken,. So disappointed of that place . Never go back again
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
Poke is very delicious! Wish the serving size was a bit more. But it's so delicious, I'll return to get it again. Kimchi slaw is good! Customer service is very good!

Yelp
While I was waiting for officemates who were picking out paint for our new office, I wandered next door to Makai. It a steamer tray spot, much like a Chinese express restaurant. I really didn't see anything I wanted to take home, except musubi. A nice young woman at the register helped me. Teriyaki or Plain musubi? I only know that teriyaki is on every musubi. She offered me a choice of sauce too. Teriyaki or Spicy Teriyaki? The musubi was good and the dipping spicy Teriyaki was good. Never dipped before, but it was cool. My office peeps like the food here. Maybe I'll try lunch here in the future.

Kayri J.

Yelp
This is the second time I had Makai's the first time it was at a different location everything was hot and good the food was excellent then I was like I'm going to try this location which was a big mistake none of the food was hot the chicken katsu was cold and looked like it was sitting out for a long period of time and the portions was small so I had to order a side of meat I don't recommend go to another location and it was also hair in the food.

Ab B.

Yelp
Losee location next to EOS. I frequent this site often. Love the Hawaiian music/ flair as I'm a transplant of Hawaii. Today was THE BEST visit. Kudis to CARTER- give him a raise/ commendation! He recalled my usual small katsu/salad/Mac plate! katsu was fresh/flavorful, portion worthwhile & moved quickly thru all with a smile & great service!! Carter- u da bomb!
google avatar

Yelp
Although I am giving Makai Island Grill only a 2, that 2 is because we thought their macaroni salad was really delicious and really the only main highlight to our meal. Staff seemed basically there for a paycheck. Nothing necessarily welcoming or helpful being offered as we placed our orders at the counter. We ordered two meals to go. My husband went with two meats and I went with poke. The foundation of the meal of rice was exceptionally overcooked and hard, like real hard...some of those rice grains could break a tooth! The poke was underwhelming. It was smooshy, a bit slimy and a touch salty...all the things you do not want poke to be. Did not taste close to being fresh. The chicken in my husbands dish was overcooked. But did I mention the macaroni salad....exceptional. very flavorful, creamy and cold. Delish! Worth stopping in to get a tub of that. Underwhelming overall and we most likely won't be back. Too much Hawaiian completion in the area that are better.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The service was great I ordered online and picked up and was treated with a kind smile. Will be definitely coming back to dine in.

Yelp
Love the Mochico chicken here and the steak. Been goin here since it opened years ago. Like the concept that it's already cooked and u just pick the proteins and side dishes. Selection is good. Poke is now disappointing. Not the same as when they just opened. Tuna stringy too. It wasnt thawed properly or something tastes funny. Hope they fix this. A lot of poke places openednear the area and you can taste the difference

Yelp
I've come here a few times because the mac salad and teriyaki steak is good. I decided to try their spam musubi today. I ordered one regular and one teriyaki. I started eating the teriyaki one on the way home and I bit into something crunchy and then realized the spam was completely burnt! The regular one ( as they called it) was just plain! No furikake seasoning, no sauce. Just plain spam and rice. I grew up in Hawaii and I know that's definitely not how a regular spam musubi is made. The service here could be a lot better. I don't think I've ever walked in and been greeted by any of the workers. I noticed today that not one employee looked up or smiled when I walked in . I think if you are serving Hawaiian food and playing Hawaiian music, there should also be that aloha spirit when a customer walks in the door.
google avatar

Philipp R.

Yelp
Food was alright. It was better the last time I visited. As someone from Hawaii, I am picky where I get my Hawaiian food. The Ahi poke tasted a little fishy, I believe it was missing more sesame oil. Felt like they were a little stingy on the meat and the chicken katsu was a little burnt. The service was below average. Though the girl that was on the cashier was great, I forgot to get her name. Will not go to this restaurant again.
google avatar

Tyler W.

Yelp
I come here once a week probably cause my family & I love this food so much & the pricing is super reasonable :) I've been here the last two weeks & Ivan both times has shown exemplary service. I am now stoked when I see him as he is a kind person & shows care towards the customers. I had Gia & Savanah here this time & well & both girls were the best girls, just super fast & kind, an overall exceptional experience.

Yelp
Lacking flavor across the board. Everything was just okay. Not the worst but certainly not the best. My first impression of a Hawaiian/ pacific grill is made through their spam musubis. Right off the bat I was disappointed. Spam on rice wrapped in seaweed. No furikake seasoning or anything - thank goodness I asked for a side I could dip it in. The teriyaki one is probably better... Let's address the poke next. I got the traditional shoyu tuna and it was still frozen. I don't think I need to say anymore about that. Before I dive into the meat the sides I chose - macaroni salad & garlic edamame. Both basic and lacking flavor. The other plate, I got the sweet corn and it tastes like something dumped out of a can. Now the main point of the dishes. Chicken katsu was good, crispy and the sauce was great. Can't really complain. The mochiko chicken was full of flavor but didn't seem fresh, it was pretty dry for dark meat. The teriyaki chicken was dry and the sauce was watered down. The kalua pig was the worst of it all. Shredded pork soaked in salt. Overall this place was extremely underwhelming. Cant say anything about the service because it's chipotle style with young guys behind the counter - they were nice at least. The price I guess I can't complain about either but I'd rather spend more money at the other places I know are top notch. This is unfortunately not a place I will recommend to anyone.

Yelp
We are at Makai on Ft Apache. Food is delish. However when we walked in all of the chairs were up on the tables. They close at 9. It's 7:00. We asked if they were closing soon and the girl was rude in her response. She said "uh no we're here, we're open". If the restaurant looks closed, asking if they're closing soon is not out of line. The cashier needs to learn some manners if she's going to be working with the public.

Carol C.

Yelp
I've been a regular customer since they opened on Tropical Parkway, but last visit gave me reason to reconsider. The 1st thing that upset me was as the fact that they gave me the incorrect meat for two of the orders. It definitely wasn't what I asked for. Didn't realize it until I was home and had a closer inspection of my meal. Secondly, the portions were terrible small , much less than normal. The third reason for not returning to this place was the fact that my email to them was completely ignored! I felt disrespected!! My concerns weren't taken seriously!! While the restaurant is clean and well maintained, I don't see many customers coming in. Maybe their experience was similar to mine!
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
I've eaten at this location twice now and I wanted to to wait on writing my review to give this place a second chance. Every time I'm in I feel like this place needs more employees. With the amount of takeout orders they're preparing there is always some sort wait even if no one is in line. I have always taken my food to go because the tables always seem a mess. The cashier never seems happy to be there, even though she knows her products she seems overwhelmed or irritated. As far as the food goes the first time I went we were waiting for more food to be cook. Same thing happened the second trip. On my second visit there was three people working and nobody on the grill. I have ordered the spicy pokey twice now and both times I have gone it has been super fishy. I do like the flavors of the food and the portion size is great. However, I think I will be trying the location on blue diamond next time to see if my experience improves. With so many new Hawaiian places popping up around town there are so many options. And even though the food is good, part of the experience is good customer service and I feel like that is lacking here.

Yelp
We saw a "buy one, get one" deal on the UberEats app for a small plate, so my little brother and I thought why not try it out! It was $7.46 for a small plate, and you could select the type of meat and side that you want. We decided on chicken katsu, brown rice, and a side salad w/ red onion vinaigrette. With delivery AND tip, the order came out to $16! We really liked the packaging, the utensils, and the way it was presented. The chicken katsu was also perfectly crispy. I thought the serving was perfect.. when we finished eating everything, we agreed that we definitely got a good deal on Uber for this one without the hassle of traveling to the restaurant... (it's 25 mins away from our house and is quite a drive) On another note, I have never been to Makai before, but am willing to go there now because of how good the chicken katsu was!! I would love to bring my brother here and try their poke next time (:

Anna P.

Yelp
Went there last week to get tuna poke , I've been going there for years , so disappointed this time, now they add chip crab stuff in to poke , this is absolutely disgusting, you pay for tuna but get half of chip crab stuff. Don't ever go there , quality dropped down , prices went up. Good luck in your fake business!!!

Yelp
Normally im ALWAYS satisfied with the service and the food being served at Makai. But today i was pretty much disappointed if i had left with my food i would've missed out on my 4 teriyaki spam musubi's (2.79 each) and my creamy house dressing for my salad. I had to walk up at least three times for three different things 1. Utensil's were not filled 2. My spam musubis 3. My dressing for my salad. I know it sounds very little for a 2/3 but it makes a big difference in taste and experience and especially if im paying for my items i would like to have them. Ill still give some stars because again i really love the food here but the service was just not there today.

Lynn E.

Yelp
They measure the order by weight. They weigh the plate with the rice. The more rice they pile on the less meat you get. Maybe that's a good thing? After all the teriyaki chicken has hidden bones and often looks like it's not done enough.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
I came here with new customers and we go to pay and they have a policy of no cash, now there is no posted sign saying this , and since when does a store policy override paying cash , I will never come back here again and my friends will not because of this incident as well, horrible customer service displayed here and care more about company policy over customer service . Terrible . I will make this known .

Yelp
Shoutout to the Makai team with excellent customer service. I came to this location on Saturday 08/24 at 7:06 pm and the team was friendly and catering to me !

Yelp
Order a to go through door dash And this is what I got. The Kalua pig was dry as well as the meat If you order from there do it in person

Yelp
All of my experiences with this place, I've been through Uber eats, and none of them have been disappointing! It's one of my favorite places to order from when I'm at work. I need something good to eat for lunch without breaking the bank. Whenever I get my food, it's always still pretty warm and always super delicious. I found out they have some of the best prices for their food, the teriyaki steak just has an amazing sauce. I don't even know how to describe it. I've never had any issues with the meat, and I always appreciate that they will give you sauces on the side. This place is honestly great when it comes to barbecue. My favorite needs to order are the chicken Katsu, teriyaki steak, and teriyaki chicken. I like to pair with sides like macaroni salad, and corn. I highly recommend trying the place, I've ordered so many times I just wanna go in there and try it firsthand. A+!!!'

Yelp
1/8/22 WOW, I mean WOW!!! I do not know why this place does not have an even higher Yelp rating. Quality/Quantity - 5 Stars, very good flavors and cooking/grilling was almost perfect. I had 1 or 2 charred pieces. I like the fact that they use a scale to weigh their servings because it adds consistency. It would be better if the scale was double sided so the customers can see the weight as well. We ordered: Large - White Rice, Teriyaki Chicken, Katsu, Kalua Pig, Sweet Corn, Salted Edamame Large - Brown Rice (50¢ up charge), Mochiko Chicken ($1.50 up charge), 2 Pulehu Steak ($3 up charge), Macaroni Salad, Garlic Edamame So basically, we tried almost everything on the menu. I do not order the Poke, as I make an AMAZING Poke at home! Atmosphere - Good, locally owned business. Hawaiian music played in the background and was not too loud. Indoor and outdoor seating Clean Bathrooms with "in use" locks Service - Really happy employees. Greet/shout from across the store as customers walk in, " Welcome to 'Makai'." Very patient with us as they instantly recognized us as first time customers. Price - $33.50 + Tip I know it states clearly on your menu the up charge for brown rice and some meats, but I do not think it hurts to remind customers prior to ordering, especially since they know we were first time customers. $18 for my plate with all the up charges is a little expensive for what we got; but it was worth it. Owner Suggestion - Congrats on all your success since 2016! Congrats to the 3 brothers owners for your 4 locations. We will be back.

Yelp
Got dinner from here tonight (first time) and it was really good. Also ready for us right as we arrived. Between us we tried teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, kalua pork, chicken katsu, garlic edamame and Mac salad. Also tried the Hawaiian poke (never had poke before). Everything was so good!!! Only issue was that the Mac salad had quite a lot of salt and never had a Mac salad with potato in it before. It was good. Just a little different than we're used to. The poke WAS AMAZING and I'll definitely be getting that again!! Prices very reasonable and massive portions. Will definitely be back.

Darcie C.

Yelp
Im in love with the food. Even though my order is basic... It makes me happy because of the flavor. The staff are super chill, But if its busy they are like order next order next keep that in mind.
google avatar

Kayla B.

Yelp
This is the best Hawaiian place! The price you pay to the amount of food you get is amazing. I love the teriyaki chicken and kalua pork is the best. I visited here with a friend and definitely plan on returning. I love how you can pick and choose your sides and they have a wide variety of options compared to other Hawaiian places in Vegas.

Jesús P.

Yelp
This place used to be top class, but not so much anymore. Just a few years ago, a large plate easily fed both my wife and me. That's not the case anymore. They don't fill the plate like they used to! They are crafty now by stuffing their poke side and mac salad with potato chunks. And if you ask for double meat as two sides, they'll short your portion. That's just bad business. Really disappointed. Do better Makai.

Catherine M.

Yelp
Food was decent! I like the option to try a little bit of everything which was nice. Proteins were solid but nothing special. Kimchi slaw was a little weird since it was next to the warm rice. Otherwise it was decent!
google avatar

Wilbert C.

Yelp
The Poke was stinky. I'll never order that again. Raw tuna should have zero odor, and this sent my nose into a tailspin. But the pork and chicken were ok.

Felicia B.

Yelp
Service was good. I liked the teriyaki chicken the most (vs. the Kalua pork and Katsu chicken).
google avatar

Teresia A.

Yelp
An excellent healthy and tasty meal for an excellent price. Every item on the menu is good and I really recommend the katsu and the poke.

Yelp
Great Hawaiian Food, Friendly staff, very welcoming and Awesome location. Strongly recommend if you are passing thru the neighborhoods of Spring valley- Summerlin.

Yelp
Ordered through Grubhub. The food was ready quickly so I KNEW it wouldn't be fresh, but it was too late to cancel. Once I received the food the top wasn't even on secure. I looked at it and threw it away after taking pictures. I ordered this for 2 of my children to share because I'm exhausted. Now not only was this a waste of money and food, but a HUGE inconvenience. So disgusting!
google avatar

Stephanie O.

Yelp
Ordered takeout medium bowl today with teriyaki chicken and steak with salad. Overall, the bowl was a great lunch. Good portion of chicken and steak, well flavored and sauce on side. I just wish the rice was less over cooked; a little mushy in texture for my taste. Will try their other items next time !
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
I don't eat meat, but their Mac salad was pretty good. Im not expecting vegetarian or vegan options it is a Hawaiian restaurant. My husband is a meat eater, and he loves their food.
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
On Instagram, I discovered their page and had to check them out! Their known as like a Hawaiian chipotle I ordered their large bowl which included two scoops of rice, 2 sides and 3 choices of meat. I ordered their chicken katsu,Mochiko chicken and kalua pig for my meats and my sides were Mac salad and tossed salad with their creamy sesame dressing. The katsu was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, kalua pig was tender and also moist and their Mochiko chicken had a nice fried crunch. The food was plentiful, tasty and cooked fresh while the service was fast and the employees are helpful. Nice experience for my first visit and would come back again!

Yelp
The food was good for a quick lunch. The macaroni salad had a good flavor but also had potatoes in it. Didn't care for that. My chicken katsu and pulehu steak was delicious. The garlic edamame was divine. I'll be back to try out other items soon.
