On the Grid : MAKEbhm

"The brainchild of local architect Bruce Lanier (who also designed the space), MAKEbhm is the hub of Magic City maker culture. A gathering place for people who believe that good design, original ideas, and collaboration are the foundation of a creative community. Be it woodworking, metalworking, printmaking or ceramics—they provide the space, tools, power, WiFi, and coffee; you provide the inspiration and perspiration. MAKEbhm also offers classes taught by local artists, artisans, and craftspeople. You can even learn the ins and outs of bike repair from local bike mechanics who volunteer at the in-house Bici Bicycle Cooperative. Also on site, a retail space that’s home to Winslet & Rhys and Big Spoon Creamery. A second makerspace—dubbed M2—is currently in the planning stages." - Lewis Communications

Fantastic classes got me hooked on doing pottery. I've been enjoying their ceramics studio membership for a year now and every visit is so fun! All of the members and staff are so nice and pleasant to chat to and are extremely helpful any time I ask questions!

Can't believe I haven't left a review for this place in the 3-4 years I've been here but here we go! This place is an artist's dream. I'm a screen printer because of this place. And because of Hannah! Hannah is the absolute best part of this place and that's saying a lot because there's so much to love about Make. It's definitely a second home to me, and I'm so lucky for that. 🩷 Thank you MakeBHM. I HAVE been here a lot.

Did the Intro to Ceramics with Marika and it was so fun! She was a great teacher and was very patient in explaining things multiple times to newbies. I think the class series is a great value for 8 hours of instruction and getting 2-3 pieces to take home at the end. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I love the multi-space concept. Not yet familiar with Winslett&Rhys, but Big Spoon Creamery, Bici Coop and Make are all welcome in this neighborhood. Not sure if there is space left for other tenants...would be cool if there was. If you enjoy wearing cool clothes while perusing rough/unique/reclaimed wood while consuming delicious ice cream while your bike is being tuned, MakeBHM is your place to make it all happen.

Yelp
Currently taking a ceramics class at makeBHM!! So very cool that Birmingham has these options for art classes! They also teach classes for metals, wood, and print work. The space is very relaxed and the studio is open for students to come in on their free time outside of class to practice more if they want which I thought was pretty cool especially if you are somebody who wants to get your money worth! Would definitely suggest taking a class first before you want to get a membership so that you know how to use all of the equipment! Of course that suggestion is for beginners. Definitely a cute idea for couples and friends to do together but is also a great opportunity to branch off and do something on your own! Check it out!
